Where And When To Meet Courses start at 1800 on Sunday evening and finish at approximately 1600 on Friday. Please meet at Alcaidesa Marina Lounge Bar at 1800 hours on Sunday. You will meet your Instructor who will take you to your yacht and give you and the rest of your crew a safety briefing. Please note that we do not provide an evening meal on these nights but there are restaurants nearby. The boat is berthed on pontoon 10 but please do not go on the yacht before meeting your Instructor, this is for your own safety.
What To Expect From A Practical Course In and around Gibraltar is the perfect area to learn to sail with its strong tidal flow, commercial traffic and TSS’s (Traffic Separation Scheme) to contend with. At the same time it can be tranquil sailing with transcontinental passages to Africa. Often there are dolphins in the bay and sometimes even whales can be seen. Most days we have good winds and the sun is shining. Our instructors are highly qualified, experienced and able to offer a range of instruction for the complete novice through to RYA Yachtmaster level. The first evening of a sailing course will normally be spent stowing personal kit followed by a chat about the format of the course, likely ports of call and answering any general questions. Depending on your course, we aim to spend as many nights in different marinas as possible and in most cases there will be the opportunity to go ashore for a meal. Life at sea relies upon everyone working as a team and an efficient yacht means everyone has to be involved with the domestic chores, cooking, cleaning, etc. These duties may be 27 shared on a rota basis.
What You Need To Bring Casual clothes for warm and cool weather, including a warm fleece. Long sleeved top for sun protection whilst sailing. Deck shoes or trainers with good grip and non marking soles (you may want to consider sailing boots for wet weather). Sunglasses and hat. Swimwear. Wash kit and towel. Sunscreen. Sea sickness tablets and any other personal medication you feel you may require. Mosquito repellent and bite cream. Remember to bring your log book with you if you have one already. You may find it useful if you have your own torch. Safety equipment and wet weather gear will be provided during your course but you may bring your own. We also supply bedding, in the form of duvet, sheets and pillows.
Food And Drink Fees include all food and drinks onboard except the evening of joining. If you have any specific dietary requirements, please let us know on the booking form.
Safety You will receive a full safety briefing before sailing. We all need to look after ourselves and each other. All required safety equipment is onboard each yacht however please feel free to bring your own equipment such as lifejackets should you 28 have them.
Cancellation & Travel Insurance As per the Terms and Conditions we are unable to refund or change dates of a course once within 28 days of the start date unless we can sell the space. Whilst the school carries full public liability insurance for its activities you should satisfy yourself that you are covered for personal injury and cancellation. It is strongly recommended that holiday insurance is taken out covering the activity of sailing.
Yachtmaster Exam Candidates The preparation course will ensure you are aware of the scenarios the examiner will present you with and try and prepare you fully for the exam. Emphasis will be on working on your weaker areas during the week. Normally the examiner will join the boat on the last day of your course depending on the number of candidates. Please remember to bring your log book, passport photo, First Aid certificate and radio licence. We all wish you a fantastic time whilst at the school.
