Theatre Becoming a Pillar of the Arts at Heidelberg

In the past three years, the Heidelberg University Theatre program has more than quadrupled in size and implemented a growing subscriber program. Shows routinely sell out, and the quality of the productions has increased simultaneously. So what’s the secret? Theatre Director Stephen Svoboda sheds light on the re-emergence of the program that has become a treasure in the local arts community. Q: What changes or new ideas have you implemented since your arrival at Heidelberg? A: I was really excited when I was offered this job three years ago because there was an inherent challenge, which was to reinvent a theatre program for the 21st century. I am a builder. I love to think creatively, so I came into this with the approach that I would emphasize what works and de-emphasize what doesn’t work. In addition to giving our students opportunities to learn all the professional skills they’ll need, we have combined that with a unique hybrid that has brought exciting performances to the Gundlach Theatre stage performances that entertain, provoke thought and challenge our actors and audiences on many levels. I believe we’ve brought the production level up to that of a professional performance. And we’ve worked very hard to collaborate across campus to serve other programs like the Lichtman-Behm Genocide Lecture Series and the Education Summit. It’s our job to make theatre accessible to everyone

and to use our creativity to help other areas. Q: To what do you attribute the theatre’s tremendous growth and success? A: We started with eight majors three years ago and we have more than quadrupled that number. The excitement of our productions and the support from the School of Music & Theatre has been really exciting. The philosophy of the theatre staff, which also includes David Cotter and Karina Brown, is very much one of mentorship. We make personal relationships with our students and provide them a place here on campus. I think we’ve created a cultural identity where people want to be here and be a part of it. In general we’ve made the coursework rigorous but rewarding, so the students see growth. Our faculty members and the people who come to the shows see this transformation, so there’s this evidence of learning that is so strong and very compelling to students. It’s very much a personal, 1-1 approach with students, who know that I will be invested in them from the moment they walk on campus to the moment they leave, and then after that. So our students really feel welcomed into a family, and that’s very important to me. We really, truly do get the opportunity to know our students beyond an academic setting, and become mentors and family members to them. That’s the key to our success. Q: What are some of the benefits a theatre program of this caliber brings to

Heidelberg and the community? A: There’s a perception that there are two ways to bring together disenfranchised students or populations: sports and the arts. We fully embrace the sports component here on campus but we’re just starting to break the surface of the arts component. To me, in the course of one year, 4,000 people will come to see our shows and have a community experience, whether it’s a comedy and they’re all laughing together or it’s Diary of Anne Frank and they’re all crying together. I try to pick shows that matter, that I think will resonate for both our students, our faculty and staff and the community. I want us to have conversations about things that we need to talk about. So I think the arts provides a place for discourse, a place for community bonding, a place for emotional release and catharsis, a place that is very, very important to our times right now. Q: How does being involved with theatre positively impact students? A: The self-assuredness that develops in our theatre majors, the ability to communicate about any topic they’re all on an arc to adulthood. And what I enjoy most about being their professor is pushing them along that path to figuring out who they are, what they believe in and as artists, finding out what they want to say to the world. We also learn to think creatively and collaboratively, to synthesize ideas, to look at ideas from different points of view and bring them together. I think

theatre provides the sense that you can do anything, that you can reinvent anything and you can work collaboratively as a team to solve a problem. Those are important skills for getting into the workforce. That’s really what my mission is for every student I meet, and I hope we demonstrate those qualities in our performances. Q: What can we expect going forward? A: My goal, my dream for the future is that we have 100 theatre majors, that we have a partnership with a summer stock theatre we are sending our students to every summer, that we could create a summer stock for Tiffin that would be amazing to drive tourism to our community. I hope that through the Theatre Department and the music program that the arts become as strong a pillar on our campus as sports, that we bring in a whole new set of students to our campus, and hopefully, that the Theatre Department can provide some sustainability for the university as a whole, which has been my mission since I got here. I would like to see us start to do some more social activism through theatre. I’m very interested in doing a show with the adults with disabilities from the School of Opportunity and our students. I’d love to see how theatre can connect out and play a vital role in the whole Tiffin community in terms of economic development and social and cultural awareness. I’m ready to go.

Terra State Offers Tuition-Free Program for 2020-2021

FREMONT — The Workforce Demand Scholarship is back to give high school graduates a tuition-free option to attend Terra State Community College classes as long as they are pursuing a career in a high-demand job field. “The Workforce Demand Scholarship is a gap scholarship,” says Kristen Lindsay, Terra State’s Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Services. “It brings the cost of college down to a more affordable level for students. For example, at Terra State, the current cost of tuition and general fees for the fall and spring semesters is $4,944. If a student receives a Pell grant in the amount of $2,000, along with other scholarships totaling $1,000, your scholarship is the difference in the amount and would be $1,944. Books and other fees are not covered by the scholarship.”

This year, the Workforce Demand Scholarship is available to students pursuing the following degrees: • Accounting • Agribusiness Management • Business Management • Computer Information Systems • Health Information Technology • Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) • Hospitality Management • Interactive Media • Manufacturing Technology • Music Technology and Recording Arts • Power and Controls (Electricity) • Power Technologies (includes Automotive) • Robotics - Integrated Manufacturing Technology • Systems and Network Support

• Welding Technology To qualify, a student must be enrolled full time (twelve or more credit hours) for the fall and spring semesters and part-time (six or more credit hours) for the summer semester. Students who are awarded the Workforce Demand Scholarship will be provided the opportunity to participate in a work-based experience with an employer in Terra State’s service district. The scholarship pays for a maximum of five semesters and a target of 12 - 15 students per program are eligible to receive the scholarship. Students who graduate high school in 2020 will get priority preference with remaining spots filled by other qualifying students. To apply for the scholarship, applicants must: • Be a high school graduate and new

to Terra State. This includes CCP students. • Not have a college degree. • Complete a free application for admission to Terra State, the Terra State scholarship application and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) all before April 15, 2020. • Develop an academic and career plan, sign a participation contract, and register for classes before April 15, 2020. • Submit a non-refundable $50 deposit by April 15, 2020 to reserve your spot (deposit will be applied to cost of general fees once enrolled). • Complete on-campus service hours weekly during each semester of enrollment. An on-campus service hour commitment will be matched as best as possible to help build skills for future employment in the student’s occupation of choice. “Recipients of the Workforce Demand Scholarship need to enroll full time at Terra State and they must attend consecutive fall and spring terms with summer enrollment remaining an option,” Lindsay points out. “Students are also required to maintain a 2.0 cumulative grade point average and achieve a course completion rate of 68%.” Recip-

ients forfeit all benefits if they stop taking classes or drop below full-time status. Beyond the financial assistance, recipients of the scholarship receive other benefits. “These students receive special invites to career-focused events on campus like job fairs and professional development opportunities,” says Lindsay. One event last year was a networking

and professionalism workshop presented by Callista Gould, author of The Exceptional Professional: What You Need To Know To Grow Your Career. Recipients even received a free copy of her book. Tiffin University and Mercy College of Ohio Announce Joint Nursing Program

The United States is projected to experience a shortage of Registered Nurses as Baby Boomers age and the need for health care grows. Compounding the problem, according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, nursing schools across the country are struggling to meet the rising demand given the national move toward healthcare reform. To address the nursing shortage, Tiffin University and Mercy College of Ohio have collaborated to create an innovative dual degree bachelor’s program to begin in the 2020-2021 academic year. In the new joint program, students earn two degrees—a Bachelor of Science in Applied Health Science from Tiffin University and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Mercy College. “According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, registered nurses are projected to generate approximately 711,900 new jobs, the largest number of new jobs for any occupation,” said TU President Lillian Schumacher. “Students entering Tiffin University and completing this dual degree program will help fill the nursing needs in the State of Ohio. Dual credentials will allow students to demonstrate to future employers that they have the critical broader knowledge of allied health sciences to support their practice as a nurse.” Dr. Susan Wajert, President of Mercy College of Ohio states “This is an innovative way for two colleges to partner to meet the healthcare needs of the communities we serve. Students who participate in the dual degree will have a broader educational perspective as they prepare for the nursing profession.” “For years, prospective students of Tiffin University have consistently identified nursing as their professional choice,” Schumacher continued, “and keeping in line with Tiffin University’s academic career focus to support students who wish to work in professional positions, this the initiative will provide

students the opportunity to enter a nursing program.” “Mercy Health believes in helping to foster the next generation of healthcare providers and we are pleased to have Mercy College as part of our Health System. This agreement with Tiffin University is an example of an exciting opportunity to partner with other institutions for the good of our community and with the goal of increasing the number of medical professionals in our community” stated Bob Baxter, President, Mercy Health - Toledo. The new degree requires a 129 credit hour program with 64 credits earned in core and applied health science courses at Tiffin University and 65 credit hours in BSN coursework from Mercy College. “This new major is a substantial advantage for our students,” said Dr. Peter Holbrook, Tiffin University’s Provost

and Chief Academic Officer. “By partnering with Mercy College, our students will have access to top clinical sites as well as practicing medical professionals. “This will also lead to better job placement as they will most likely be able to obtain positions within the Mercy Health Care System. It aligns perfectly with TU’s mission—to educate students by linking knowledge to professional practice.” President Schumacher concludes, “Tiffin University’s new major has the potential to transform our campus as we move to offer degrees in allied health disciplines. Mercy College is the ideal affiliate in this strategic alliance focused on student success. We are ecstatic about this partnership.” For admission information email Sarah Johnson, Director of Undergraduate Admissions, JohnsonSaT@tiffin.edu

Please note that receiving eStatements and having at least one direct deposit are conditions of having this account. Qualification Information: Account transactions and activities may take one or more days to post and settle to the account and all must do so during the Monthly Qualification Cycle in order to qualify for the account’s rewards. The following activities do not count toward earning account rewards: ATM-processed transactions, transfers between accounts, debit card purchases processed by merchants and received by our bank as ATM transactions, non-retail payment transactions and purchases made with debit cards not issued by our bank. Transactions bundled together by merchants and received by our institution as a single transaction count as a single transaction for the purpose of earning account rewards. “Monthly Qualification Cycle” means a period beginning one (1) banking day prior to the first banking day of the current statement cycle through one (1) banking day prior to the last banking day of the current statement cycle. When your Kasasa Cash account qualifications are met during a Monthly Qualification Cycle, daily balances up to and including $15,000 in your Kasasa Cash account earn an interest rate of 2.72% resulting in an APY of 2.75%; and daily balances over $15,000 earn an interest rate of .05% on the portion of the daily balance over $15,000, resulting in a range from 2.75% to 1.35% APY depending on the account’s daily balance. You will receive reimbursements up to $20 maximum refund ($5 per single transaction) for nationwide ATM fees incurred during the Monthly Qualification Cycle in which you met your Kasasa Cash qualifications. When your Kasasa Cash qualifications are not met, the interest rate earned on the account’s entire daily balance will be .05% resulting in a non-compounding annual percentage yield of .05%. Interest will be credited to your Kasasa Cash account on the last day of the current statement cycle. APY = Annual Percentage Yield. APYs accurate as of 10/04/2018. APY calculations are based on an assumed balance of $15,000 + $85,000 in your Kasasa Cash account and an assumed statement cycle of thirty-one (31) days. Rates, rewards, and bonuses, if any, are variable and may change after account is opened without notice to you. No minimum balance is required to earn or receive the account’s rewards. Rewards less than a penny cannot be distributed. Fees may reduce earnings. Account approval, conditions, qualifications, limits, timeframes, enrollments, and other requirements apply. $100 minimum deposit is required to open the account. Limit of one Kasasa account(s) per primary SSN. There are no recurring monthly maintenance charges or fees to open or close this account.
