Senecas volleyball team wants to have fun, win

“You don’t win postseason games without challenges in a season. We would absolutely love to have close games.” — Zoe Meyer Calvert middle hitter

BY ZACH BAKER

Sports Editor zbaker@advertiser-tribune.com

When Calvert’s Zoe Meyer was asked about her squad being targeted by other teams this season, she gave an answer that was, frankly, a little surprising. The Senecas surprised plenty of people — at least on the outside — by winning the Division IV state volleyball championship last season. So this year, they won’t sneak up on anyone. And opponents likely would consider it a season highlight if they beat them. When asked about this, the middle hitter’s answer could be summed up in a single word: Good. “Having the potential of having someone knocking us down is exciting, because that means that someone is stepping up and is challenging us and making us better. You don’t win postseason games without challenges in a season,” she said. “We would absolutely love to have close games. It’s not a fault on our side if we go into five sets with somebody. It’s an accomplishment for us to have opportunities to get better.” It was a tone that was echoed

from a number of other returning players. They know repeating won’t be easy. But they are embracing that. “It’s going to be a challenge,” said Calvert libero AJ Hemminger, “but it’s going to be a good challenge.” As it has been for two seasons, the attitude has been set by coach Lori Rombach. The second-year mentor has been preaching confidence, not cockiness. When told about some of her players’ remarks, the coach seemed pleased. “That’s one of the tones I try to set within each practice, each lifting session, each team event

that we do,” she said, “is we’re gonna have to work twice as hard as last year to get half as much success.” That was another line the players said in practice, though it took on larger numbers. “Definitely the pressure is the biggest challenge,” setter Emma White said. “This whole time, we’ve been saying that we have to work five times as hard for half as much credit.” Anyone who saw how hard the Senecas played last season may find it hard to believe they can work much harder. But the players insist it’s possible. “I think we’re gonna stay

humble and work hard for whatever’s thrown at us,” Hemminger said. “We can handle the pressure this year.” While the word “pressure” was used a lot in the interviews, Rombach and the players all said they weren’t going to get away from enjoying the game. And while the Senecas want to repeat as state champions, Rombach said that isn’t the main objective. She said she’s told the players she wants two things from them. “We have to have fun. That is the first thing on our mind is that we have to have fun,” she said. “The second thing that’s been my focus is, trust the process and let’s enjoy the journey. Because as I said to them, if none of us get along, and I run practices that

are intense, ultra-focused, and we do go far, but we didn’t have fun, what is that for?’” And there will be changes. The Senecas lost some key players, such as Lexie White, Sophie Burtis and Shelby Hemminger, to graduation. AJ Hemminger will be taking over her sister’s libero position. “I have to say the difference from this year to last year is it’s a new team, new girls, so we have a new energy on the court, but it’s a new energy,” she said. “It’s a whole different team, a new dynamic. We have new goals. We have a new motivation for this season, and it’s going good so far, but we still have to improve.” The Senecas already have faced some adversity this season. Their starting middle hitter, Lila Gehring, tore her ACL and will miss the whole year. “That was a devastating blow to our team,” Rombach said. “But when you have a team that has depth, you look down the bench and you see who the next person up (is) to fill her position.” And the Senecas seem to have plenty of depth. And talent. And it’s not exclusive to the high school program. “Our program…it gives me goosebumps thinking about it,”

Senecas hit by graduation, but retain high expectations BY ZACH BAKER

Sports Editor zbaker@advertiser-tribune.com

At a meeting of Sandusky Bay Conference coaches and media last month, Calvert coach Steve Reser was blunt about his team, saying if someone passed the ball, caught it or ran it, they had probably graduated. It was a slight exaggeration, of course, but the Senecas were hit heavily by graduation after Reser’s first season at the helm, one in which the Senecas went 9-2 and qualified for the playoffs. In an interview a few weeks later, the coach acknowledged his squad lost some talent. But that hasn’t lowered Calvert’s hopes for the season. “We’ve got some new guys at skill, we’ve got some that are playing line too, obviously,” Reser said. “That’s a tribute to losing a bunch of great seniors who filled some spots for quite a few years. So, obviously, we’re looking to fill those spots.” But Reser is confident the Senecas will, and still be tough. “As far as expectations, we’re going to fill those spots, and expectations, no matter the last name or the number on the jersey, I think will remain the same, if they don’t increase,” he said. “That’s these young men, that’s the way they

As far as the passing game, his reads have come a long way since even June.” And Shultz is getting some help from a familiar face. “Coach Hemminger is out here coaching him,” Reser said. “Obviously, Park knows what we’re expecting to do, so he’s done a great job helping Jack.” At tailback, Aaron Rombach is expected to be the top ball-carrier, with Mitch Nielsen also in the backfield in certain sets. “We may have a couple two-back sets, but as far as true running backs go, (Rombach)’s the No. 1 guy,” Reser said. Meanwhile, Nielsen also will be used at the slot receiver. “Whenever he gets the ball, he has big-play potential,” Reser said. “He does good things with the football.” Also at the receiver spot is Nick Seifert, who has continued to impress. “Nick has done a great job, really worked hard in the weight room in the offseason, as well as Mitch, and our whole team I think worked hard in the weight room,” Reser said. “But Nick’s grown a lot since his sophomore year. Coming out as a junior, he looks taller, looks stronger, looks thicker, so we’re expecting big things out of those two.”

work. Their expectations for this team are high, the coaches are high as well. We’re pretty confident the guys are understanding what we expect out of scheme.” The Senecas lost a pair of standouts at quarterback and tailback. Signal-caller Park Hemminger is still with the program, but is now part of the staff. Austin Jones — the all-state tailback — is a few blocks over at Tiffin University. To replace Hemminger at QB, Reser has turned to junior Jack Shultz. “He’s doing a good job so far, he’s really understanding his reads,” Reser said. “The run game, he understands as far as our backflow, our action, our I please see SENECAS, 6

Calvert volleyball,” Meyer said. “I’m so excited to come back, when I’m in college and when I graduate to come back and watch my now-friends play and continue our legacy of being a great program.” But make no mistake, the team believes it can repeat. “It’s definitely going to be our goal to win another state championship,” outside hitter Ashlyn Jones said. “Back to back.” Rombach agreed. “Our goal is to do something that Calvert volleyball has never done. that is to win state back-to-back,” she said. “That is the goal. And we’re not gonna focus on that destination, but we are going to make every decision along the way to support that.” And the players will have a big role in that, and not just on the court. “There’s a lot of girls on this team that have very high volleyball IQs, that have played a lot of club games over the years, and of course they’re gonna see things that I don‘t see,” Rombach said. “Do they have input? It brings back a good core of players, and plowed through its first two league opponents. But Rombach doesnʼt want her team taking anyone — or anything — for granted. “You canʼt minimize any opponent that you go onto the court against,” she said. “There are — our league teams — always play their best games against us. As evident last year when we played New Riegel.” Calvert was beaten by the Blue Jackets in a conference match late in the season. It ended up being its last defeat.

when it’s game time, there’s not much...the coaches have the say at that point. When we‘re breaking thing down, they absolutely point things out and we discuss things.” Bottom line: It feels like another big year is in the offing. And the community seems as ready as the players. The gym was packed for Calvert’s home opener with Danbury, and Meyer said she’s noticed a buzz.

Nolan Beeker also will be in the slot, and there’s some position battles going on for the other roles. On the offensive line, Calvert will be led by Vinny Volpe and Parker Beard, who are both seniors. They will be playing the tackles, while Josh Gase will be at guard. Nolan Wuescher will play the other guard, and Mike Casale will be at center On defense, Reser said the Senecas will use a multiple front. And the defensive players will look pretty similar to the offensive players. “We have eight seniors, seven juniors, 12 sophomores and six freshmen, so a lot of the guys names are gonna be the same,” Reser said. Up front, Reser said Jake Seifert will have a big role.

“Jake’s done a good job for us, come a long way since last year, a very strong young man,” Reser said. “Understands what he’s supposed to do up front as far as reading his keys, so he’s been a force for us up there.” Volpe and Beard will play at the ends, Gase will be at tackle, while Wuescher is working at guard and tackle. Meanwhile, Casale will occupy a linebacker spot, along with Rombach and Ethan Vera. In the secondary, Nielsen will play a corner, with a position battle going on for the other spot. Shultz and and Nick Seifert are expected to play at safety, while Beeker will be at another linebacker spot. Reser said a big key to defensive success will be up front. “Right now, I think that everybody’s done a nice job learning,” Reser said. “Obviously, we have some athleticism in the defensive backfield. But so far, what we’ve

looked the strongest at, hopefully that remains true, but what we’ve looked the strongest at is just our box play, instead of a side. But up front we’ve been pretty solid in our scrimmage. The guys up front have been doing a good job of taking care of offensive linemen, and the linebackers have been flowing to the ball really well. So, we’re excited about our front. If they do their job... obviously it’s a little bit tougher in the defensive backfield with all that space to cover, but we feel that the front, whether it’s run or pass, can apply enough pressure to make the job easier in the backfield.” At special teams, Rombach is expected to punt, while Quinten Ronski returns at placekicker. Nick Seifert and Nielsen are likely to be returners. Along with the high expectations. “This season, we expect to be great, but we’ve got to take it one game at a time,” Reser said.

Calvert Volleyball I from page 5

“It was a humbling experience for the girls, but it was a lesson, an opportunity for us to face some adversity,” Rombach said. “We grew from that. I will do my best to prepare our girls...each opponent that we have, that we take them very serious. Volleyballʼs a game of momentum, and focus, so any team is beatable on any given day. If you donʼt show up, you will get beat. So, my job is to prepare them to show up every game.” Calvert lost some key players — including Lexie White and Shelby Hemminger — to graduation. It also lost Gehring to a season ending injury, and she was going to be the teamʼs starting middle hitter. Still, the Senecas have depth. Freshman Hannah Miller has shined in opening matches. One thing is for sure. As great as last season was, itʼs in the past. “I really just tried to close the book of last year and just open up to something different,” Rombach said. “I mean, everything is different. Thereʼs several (of the) same players on this yearʼs team as last yearʼs team, but theyʼre different this year, because theyʼre with different athletes on the court. Iʼm trying not to allow myself to focus on last year. Itʼs becoming easier to not think about it.”

Behm lauded Laneyʼs leadership. “Itʼs nice having Chris on the team, heʼs proving himself,” he said. “He put the work in that needed to be put in, and he dragged some of his teammates with him.”

If we can do that, everything else will fall into place.” As for who will lead the group in races, Behm named Smith and Gonzalez. “If Leah can stay healthy, sheʼs definitely the No. 1; sheʼs had calf issues,” Behm said. “Erikaʼs a solid No. 2.” The coach added heʼs been impressed by McClellan and Felterʼs work ethic. “They mean business this year,” he said.

FALL SPORTS Columbian Tornadoes 2018: 8-3, 4-1 SBC Lake Head coach: Judd Lutz ..

Tornadoes ready to compete in tough SBC Lake Division BY ZACH BAKER

Sports Editor zbaker@advertiser-tribune.com

Two seasons ago, Columbian was winless. Last season, the Tornadoes were a playoff team, one of four Sandusky Bay Conference Lake teams to reach the postseason. But in his four seasons as TC coach, Judd Lutz’s message and his expectations have remained consistent. And that won’t change. “I think expectations, may externally have changed, that sort of thing, with pressures from outside sources,” Lutz said, “but we always expect to get a little better every day, find something to grind away at, get better at, hold our kids to a high standard on and off the field. That will never change. “Were we surprised last year with some results? No, I don’t think so,” he said. “We knew we would have a chance, similar to this year.” And despite the great 2018 season, Lutz knows that if anything, the pressure will be more intense this season. That’s because the league will be just as tough, if not tougher than last season. “It’s probably the best since I’ve been here,” Lutz said. “Everybody is gonna be

We knew we would have a chance, similar to this year.” — Judd Lutz, Columbian football coach better than they were last year...We know we need to trend upward, because everyone else is gonna trend upward.” One thing that should help the Tornadoes is the return of last year’s starting quarterback, Chase Frankhauser. Frankhauser missed some games last season, and was dealing with another injury in the weeks before this season. “We know we’re gonna get him back at any point,” Lutz said. “He’s anxious to play and get back, too. Real excited.” Even so, the Tornadoes have options at quarterback. Standout receiver Nick

Koerper filled in for Frankhauser last season and did well. TC also has Luc Busdeker ready as well. “We’re really lucky to bring back all three of our top quarterbacks,” Lutz said. And they’re lucky to bring Koerper back, a player who has shown the ability to do a little bit of everything. “He’s a special player offensively, defensively, special teams,” Lutz said. “He’s a kid you don’t want to wear out, but you’re going to ask a lot from. He can run all day.” He also put together a special connection with Frankhauser. “Right out of the gates, it was evident, Chase and Nick, had a big Week 1, but that was really all offseason we saw that connection,” Lutz said. “They’ve been throwing to each other, back-and-forth, for quite a while. We want to build that connection with as many positions as possible.” Koerper will certainly be a big part of that. “We’re gonna move (Koerper) around offensively, along with a number of guys,” Lutz said. “We’ve got some receivers with a really good dynamic with the ball. We just can’t limit them being out at wide receiver.”

Challenges I from page 5

“Three or four times a week people ask me how our season’s going, ask me to send them a schedule or wish me luck,” she said. “It’s humbling to know that that many people care.” It comes with winning so much, and to keep it up at last year’s figures to be a test. But the Senecas are ready. “With this group of girls, I feel like they welcome the challenge,” Rombach said. “I welcome the challenge. I know we’re only gonna get better with the challenge.” It’s something the Senecas are asking for. And embracing.

Hayley Luhring: Emrys Botton; Taylor Lawhorn. Others: BOYS — Senior Alec Sigler. Freshman Bryce Hannam. GIRLS — Juniors Kayla Risner; Lydia Zamora. Freshmen Carly Balliet; Kaylynn Maybee; Elena Zamora. Outlook: The numbers are low for cross country this season, especially on the boys side with just five runners for Mohawk. However, that doesnʼt mean talent doesnʼt exist. “I think coming into this season, we didnʼt really expect to have a boys team because I knew the numbers weʼd have, but with Bryce coming out this week (due to a football injury), it kind of boosted us a bit,” Cleveland said. “With him, we have more of a sense to run for than just ourselves now, which is nice.

The Advertiser-Tribune, Tiffin, Ohio Thursday, August 29, 2019 – 9 “I always mention to them that how well they do individually does affect us team-wise, so itʼs important to run their best every time out and learn from each race to improve. Itʼs all about improvement.” Cleveland named Horner as the leader of the team and has produced the best times thus far, but Ward is also one to watch on the course. One to watch for the girls side is Maybee, who has the best time this season as a freshman. “She missed a lot of time at the beginning of the season, but she was our fastest runner so far, so Iʼve challenged her to be that type of runner and she could really be special,” Cleveland said.

The Tornadoes dropped the first two games, but rallied to win in five. “Not only are they physically strong, theyʼre mentally strong, and they stay together as a team,” Boes said. Boes said the team will need to continue that if it wants to accomplish its goals this year. “I think itʼs that mental toughness, not taking ourselves out of the game,” she said. “Our league is tough. Outlook: Columbian brings back another strong runner in state qualifier Caden Groves, but Kihorany said the Tornadoes will have a better pack time this year. “I think a little bit more with this group

is consistency across the entire team,” he said.” We've got a good group of front runners and pack. We won't be as spread out. We have 20 guys total on the team, so that's a good number to have.” With Groves, Kihorany said he has become better and better. “He's the ultimate competitor, loves to race,” Kihorany said. “He's become more of a runner.” The Tornadoes also have Robinson and the Marquis brothers, who have Columbian boys cross country (front, left): Jacob Marquis, Patrick Marquis, Owen Thomsic, been impressive. mitment in the offseason, with a lot more players.” Ochier said itʼs likely that Coppus will be the teamʼs leading offensive player, while heʼs also expecting big things from Kylen Coopshaw and Adam Schermer. The coach said Evan Keefe and Dylan Adams will head up the teamʼs defense, while Evan Schleter or Schermer could be in goal. “The good part is the guys are willing to work hard,” Ochier said.

Coach: Melissa Hoffman. Outlook: Columbianʼs program has a new coach this season, but itʼs not someone whoʼs new to the program. Hoffman, a former player at Heidelberg, takes over after five seasons as an assistant to former coach Vince Arnold. Hoffman has numbers this season, and she said thatʼs a strength. But the numbers they

have is not experienced. “Our depth, 29 girls, we probably only have 11 who have actually played and had a knowledge for soccer,” Hoffman said. “Kind of our weakness.” A strength is at goalkeeper, where the Tornadoes return Koryn Morlock. “Sheʼs stepped up,” Hoffman said. The team also has Taylor Krzyzak. Who earned all district recognition a year ago.

Lakota has big numbers, but plenty of youth BY JOHN MONTGOMERY

Sports Writer jmontgomery@advertiser-tribune.com

KANSAS — Two things pop out when looking at Lakota’s roster. The first is overall numbers — 42 players. The second isn’t so welcome — lots of youth. “When I say youth, it’s just youth and guys who haven’t played on a Friday night,” coach Mike Lento said. “A lot of coaches in the area and the state and the nation will tell you the lights change you. You can be the best practice player in the world, and all of a sudden the (game) lights come on, you freak out a little bit, and (combating) that just comes with experience and exposure. “And it’s not just one or two, it’s 90% of the guys we put on the field are going to get their first taste of Friday nights,” he said. To prepare for that, Lento said the coaching staff spent the weeks leading up to the first game with pressure-filled, high-intensity practices.

“We’re young, but I think we have older guys in the right positions, spread out to allow us to compete on Friday night.” — Mike Lento, Lakota football coach

His running helped the Raiders (4-6, 2-5 SBC River) finish third in the division with 2,234 yards rushing. Sophomore Josh Matz is also back at quarterback, while senior Carter Reinhart returns to head up the receivers. “We were really run-heavy last year. I don’t want to say we’re going to be more balanced. We’ve got Trevor Franks, who I think is going to be the best back in the league. We keep him healthy, we’ll be good there,” Lento said. “But we’ve got some skill guys and we’re going to spread the ball around and really give a different look. “Will our offense be a little more explosive? Yes, I think by rights, because of what we have,” he said. Reinhart was slated to play quarterback last year, but wound up at receiver while Matz took over the signal calling duties. Lento said Reinhart helped make that decision himself. Reinhart (18-352 receiving, 3 TDs) now heads up an otherwise young receiver corps while Matz has a full sea-

“It’s been good but it’s been challenging a little bit,” he said. “We’re young, but I think we have older guys in the right positions, spread out to allow us to compete on a Friday night,” Lento said. One of those older guys in the right position is Trevor Franks. The senior returns at running back after leading the Sandusky Bay Conference River Division with 1,711 rushing yards and tying for the division lead with I please see LAKOTA, 24 21 touchdowns.

This fall, they have enough for two. “I was looking at just possibly getting into double digits (with the number of runners), and then a lot of good freshmen decided to run, and a couple of older kids decided to give it a try,” Miller said. “Iʼve got four strong runners and Iʼve got a good, experienced senior in Gregory Steyer. Heʼs been to regional his freshman year, and heʼs a good

leader, him and Garrett,” he said. “Gregoryʼs been to regional in track. Heʼs got the experience and heʼs been really working with the young kids.” Along with Steyer, Miller said Havens, Anstead and Milton look to be veterans who should do well individually, with Wilson and Wasserman — a newcomer to cross country who has run at back-to-back regional track meets in the 110 hurdles — adding talent. The team to key success will be sticking together on the course, Miller said. “If we can get our front five to stay within a minute, a minute and a half of each other, weʼll be really good,” he said. “Theyʼd like to be one of the two top teams in the league and they definitely want to try to be one of the top two teams at the district meet and make it to regionals, and a couple individuals would like to take it to the next level,” Miller said.

Wasserman leads the returners after belting 185 kills last year, with McCoy adding 119. Magers, whoʼs slowly returning to the lineup due to an illness, served 40 aces and McCoy drilled another 36. Magers also led the team with 318 digs, McCoy had 219 and Harris tallied 132. Hoover said the Stockaders have the talent, they just need to

“Iʼve never had a girls team this size,” Miller said. “Iʼm glad itʼs starting to go back the other way where kids are getting interested in it,” he said. The Stockaders run the gamut when it comes to experience — from seven veterans, including a regional qualifier in Baker, to newcomers of all ages to the sport. Miller said they also have talent to be good this year and next. “Theyʼve got the potential to be in the top three of the league. Weʼd like to get

gain experience and confidence while working together. “At this point we just want to try to get better every game, get comfortable playing with the people,” she said. “We want to just gel as a team, and work on improving every day, and want to play with some confidence,” she said. “They have ability, they just arenʼt always real confident in themselves.”

them out of the district meet as a team. That would be a real big benefit because itʼs been a real long time since weʼve had a team of girls make it to the regional meet,” he said. “With them being as young as they are, next will be just that much tougher (for other teams) because weʼve got some good eighth graders that will be coming up next year,” Miller said. The challenge, however, will come from keeping the pack close together during a race. “The talentʼs there,” Miller said. “Hopefully we can have at least four within a minute and a half of each other (as a pack),” he said. “Itʼs been fun so far. I donʼt have to watch them; they run and they really try hard.”

UPPER SANDUSKY — The first season can be a test for any coach. The Rams' Russell Hall is entering his second year at the helm. In his first season, things were tough. Upper Sandusky finished 3-7, and lost its last five games in blowout fashion. Things were extra rough; the team had 26 players out with injuries by the end of the season. Hall said it was a learning experience, and he's better-prepared this season. “Instead of finding out, 'I've got to do this,' and then in the moment, do that, now I know what's coming, I can kind of plan ahead, and adjust for that,” Hall said. “That's nice. You figure out all the little surprises and hiccups along the way.” Because of one such hiccup, there's been a change in policy: Upper Sandusky now dresses freshman for games. In the sixth week of last season, with the Rams hosting Wynford, USHS suffered a series of injuries that left it without any inside linebackers. So Hall and his staff turned to freshman Aiden Gallan. The only problem was that Gallan wasn't dressed for football. He wasn't even on the sideline. He was in the stands. “We had to go get him,” Hall said. “We are

“You figure out all the little surprises and hiccups along the way.” — Russell Hall Upper Sandusky football coach dressing our freshmen this year. We don't want to risk having to get somebody out of the stands that had no idea. They're eating a hot dog and all of the sudden, they've got to get into the game.” But if all of those injuries had a positive effect, it was that so many younger players got experience at the varsity. That includes Gallan. “He has improved greatly since his freshman season,” Hall said. The defense will be using multiple looks, which has pushed several position groups, especially the linebackers, into more versatile roles. “You really do need to be multiple, because of the vast amounts of different offensive formations we'll see from the first snap we'll see on defense Week 1 to the last snap, Week 10,”

Hall said. “There's so many different fronts you'll see, and different situations in the game, call for different things. So, we're trying to be ready for that. We try to watch film in the offseason, what worked, what didn't try and fix it.” And linebackers are a big part of that. “Our linebackers have got to know both, they've got to know safety,” Hall said. “They have to.” So Upper Sandusky has a number of hybrid players on defense. On its depth chart, Garrett Thomas and Gallant are listed as starters on the inside, while Nate McMillan and Evan Barth are on the outside. Gage Frey, Braden Brown, Alec Broderdorf and Skylar Field are also expected to see time at linebacker, and also see time at safety. Then there's Diago Cazaras, who Hall said could play LB, safety or corner. On the line, the Rams graduated a number of players off last year's squad, including four starters. Sophomore Carson VanHorn is expected to occupy one end right now, with senior Jaxon Passet backing him up. At the other end, Eric Bils, who saw some time on the line last season, is back. Braxton Johnson is expected to be a reserve there. At the tackle position, freshman Collin Bils, is expected to see time, backed up by Darius Stowers, a sophomore. At the other defensive tackle position, there's Peyton Evener, backed up by Logan Risner.

son of quarterback experience to build upon. “I don’t want to say it’s a chess match, but I think that’s what we’ve done a good job with, our kids have really bought into their roles,” Lento said. Matz did struggle at times during his freshman campaign, ending with 665 yards passing and six TDs while throwing five interceptions. However, Lento said the sophomore should fare better with a season’s worth of experience to build upon, adding he plans to allow Matz more freedom on the field. “I think we underplayed how smart he is,” Lento said. “He’s gifted, he’s got talent.” Franks and Reinhart will also

lead the Raiders on the other side of the ball. Franks moves from safety to linebacker after making 71 tackles last year while Reinhart stays at linebacker, where he led the team with 88 stops and 11 sacks. Seniors Tyler Bradner and David Frye — back after suffering a shoulder injury in last year’s first game — also return to anchor both the offensive and defensive lines, along with junior Payton Ackerman and sophomore Spencer Franks. Sophomores Logan Streacker (WR, LB) and Carson Zender (WR, LB) round out the team’s nine veterans. But underclassmen make up the vast majority of the team, with 18 sophomores and 12 freshmen on the 42-player team. “We’re doing a good job as far as our younger kids coming in. We’ve got solid seniors doing a

great job being leaders for us; they lead by example, they work hard to keep kids accountable,” Lento said. “That’s where we wanted to get to (as a program), where our players started to hold each other accountable and compete with each other. I feel like we’re there in that aspect of it. “I think we have a good team. Our defense is fast. We’re going to be fun to watch. I don‘t know how many points we’re going to get. Our kids have to figure out how to win,” he said. “That’s the biggest thing when you have young guys.” And winning and beyond is what Lento wants the Raiders to experience. “Our goal here, what we say is, ‘What class is the first class to get to the playoffs?’You have to speak it into existence,” he said. “It goes back to our philosophy. Our philosophy is, ‘One play at a time. Win this play. Control this play.’”

“We're very fortunate to have a little bit of depth, and guys with game experience on Fridays,” Hall said. “That's just not something we had last year. A lot of these guys may not have been starters, but they got in some time.” On offense, there will be a schematic change. After a year playing in the wing-T, the Rams will use a spread formation in 2019. Hall said the spread suits the athletes he has. “I believe you should mold your offense and defense based upon your roster, and not force them to necessarily do only what you do,” Hall said. The Rams have their star tailback returning. Nate McMillan has been a starter since his freshman year, and returns after three strong seasons. “He's a hurdler and a sprinter, and once he gets in the open, I think every team kind of plans their defensive scheme around trying to stop Nate,” Hall said. “They know, to give ourselves the best chance to win, we need to stop Nate McMillan. I think that has been the plan week after week against us.” The Rams will also have a different starting quarterback. Mason Vent, who started at QB for Upper Sandusky two seasons ago, is back, and will be backed by Jordan Wright. Wright played the last part of last season. At the wide receiver positions, Brayzin McDaniel, Cazares and Cano are listed as the starting receivers, with Field, Kolby Taylor and Ashton Shepherd listed as reserves. Even though they will primarily be a spread team, Hall said the Rams will employ a tight end, with Eric Bils and Tim Vukovich being utilized. “We may not be all 11 guys crowded in the box when we're spread out, but football is football,” Hall said. “A trap is a trap, a sweep is a sweep, a hitch is a hitch and a go is a go.” And in any case, Hall said the key to the offense comes from the line. “The offensive line has to do their job, do their one-eleventh,” he said. “Block who they have to

2018: 10-1, 7-0 N10 Head coach: Eric Daniel.

Rebuild underway at Mohawk BY MATT NYE

Assistant Sports Editor mnye@advertiser-tribune.com

SYCAMORE —A lot of things are different for Mohawk football this fall. Coming off a perfect 10-0 regular season with a Northern 10 Athletic Conference title, but a disappointing early exit in the postseason, the Warriors have a new coach as Brent Konkle is now the athletic director at Wynford. A familiar name, Eric Daniel, takes over this season. Daniel, a Mohawk graduate, takes over a winning program, but the Warriors lost a lot from last season. They lost seven N10 first teamers, including Bryce Kirian, who was the defensive player of the year. Keith Jenkins will also be tough to replace at QB, as he rushed and passed for over 1,000 yards last season. He had 19 total touchdowns. Zach Hayman was the best receiver in the league as well with 818 yards and nine scores. However, the cupboard isn't all the way bare. Trey Combs got a little bit of experience at QB last season in some blowouts and Jesse Leeth was a solid second option to Kirian in the Warriors' backfield. “The senior group that left were just

“I think these guys now were itching to take over and get some say...” — Eric Daniel, Mohawk football coach an incredible group of kids. They were very coachable and very talented, but just good kids,” Daniel said. “Transitioning, I think these guys now were itching to take over and get some say, because when you have a (senior) group like that, the other guys don't get a lot of say and get the opportunity to lead. “But they've been amazing, they really have. We have two junior captains (Jesse Leeth and Landen Snyder, Bryce Sheets is a senior captain) this year, which is unusual honestly. I've actually been stunned with how practice and camp has gone because of how well these kids listen and pay attention to details.” Between Leeth and Tyler Hayman (started at cornerback), they are the only

starters back from last season, but Daniel said he feels confident in the junior and sophomore classes to get the job done. A lot of them will play vital roles this season, he said. “Trey Combs has kind of separated himself from the rest at QB over the last couple of weeks. He's more of a pocket passer and he throws a beautiful ball,” Daniel said. “He diagnosis defenses a little better even maybe more than Keith did, but he is not as much of a runner. “Keith was a hard-nosed kid that ran between the tackles and gave us key first downs and yardage. He was like a tailback at QB. Trey is more of a pocket passer and he's very smart. He's been putting the ball where it needs to be.” On the offensive line will be Sheets, Kaleb Leeth, Brody Ekleberry at left guards, Kurtus Ekleberry will be the center with Grant Theis rotating in as well and at some right tackle along with James Clouse. Blake Spitler rotates with Brody Ekleberry at right guard and Steven Routt will also play some guard. Hayman will be a receiver like his brother Zach last season, Skylar Williams and Landen Snyder will be the

They do have some experience back, including Konkle, who has played a lot of volleyball for Mohawk in her career. “We lost a lot, but we still have very well-rounded players and theyʼve played volleyball at different levels for years,” Hoover said. “Weʼve had a good competitive summer and with some new players in new positions, we have to find out where everyone fits.” Mohawk started the season taking Division II Columbian to five sets. It led two games to none. “We played with good intensity and the execution was better than at any time during the summer or scrimmages, so I think we are heading in the right direction,” Hoover said. We're just big on what the defense is giving us,” Daniel said. “I anticipate us being balanced out of the gun (heavy spread), but we also have some under-center stuff as well.” The 3-4 defense will consist of Routt at nose guard, along with Brody Ekleberry. Spitler, Kaleb Leeth, Clouse and Grant Theis and Stump will all rotate as the Warriors have some depth up front. Gottfried will be an outside backer, Kurtus Ekleberry and Mason Danner will also play outside linebacker, while Jesse Leeth and

Mohawk once again will play some old MAL rivals to begin the season with Lakota and Hopewell-Loudon at home in Weeks 1 and 2 before a trip to Gibsonburg. “Lakota is well-coached and they've bought in and every year we've watched them and they've gotten better,” Daniel said. “That (Trevor) Franks kid is shifty. FALL SPORTS Carey Blue Devils

2018: 7-4, 5-2 N10 Head coach: Jonathon Mershman.

Carey looking to build off another playoff season BY MATT NYE

Assistant Sports Editor mnye@advertiser-tribune.com

CAREY — Just like rival Mohawk, Carey has been right where it belongs: in the playoffs. This season, the third under Jonathon Mershman, the Blue Devils look to bounce back from an early exit from the postseason. The Blue Devils are coming off a 7-4 year and a playoff loss to Columbus Grove. “We lost 11 seniors and they were 11 seniors who all contributed and I think at one point we had 18 of the 22 starting spots occupied by seniors,” Mershman said. “It never ends the way you want it to unless you’re McComb with a state title, but this year, we have some pieces back and some guys with experience. “We have some youth things we have to get through, but I think we are taking steps in the right direction everyday. We are going to have to rely on the guys with that experience. They’re really going to have to step up.” Even though the Blue Devils have some players back, that doesn’t mean they will be starting this season. Mershman said his sophomore class (20 kids) has really put in a lot of work in the offseason and know how to compete in practice for spots.

“We’re getting closer to being a solid varsity team, but we have a lot of work to do.” — Jonathon Mershman, Carey football coach “I think we’ve had a few great team practices because these younger guys are pushing some of the starters,” he said. “I think in our two scrimmages, we’ve gotten better from each one, which is a good sign.” Returning QB Ethan Beringer is getting pushed by Derek Lonsway in practice, Mershman said, but having a year of varsity experience under his belt will probably be the deciding factor. Beringer filled in after a year Brayden Wentling led the Blue Devils to the second round of the playoffs. Last season, Beringer completed 50% of his passes. He threw for 1,207 yards with 15 TDs and six interceptions. “I think in camp there was a shock factor where he thought, ‘Oh, I can’t just

throw it up anymore,’” Mershman said about Beringer’s first season as QB with outstanding wide receivers Jordan Dasher and Griffin Summit. “Going into his senior year now I think he’s growing up big time right in front of our eyes as a coaching staff. Everyday, he’s getting better and better. “We’re getting closer to being a solid varsity team, but we have a lot of work to do. Beringer is showing the improvement.” Offensively, the Blue Devils return some pieces, but up front is where they were hit hard, Mershman said. Offensively, behind Beringer will be Connor Williams at fullback with Reece Billock at running back. Brady Curlis and Cade Crawford will man the receiver positions with Ian Yeater at tight end. On the line, Trennen Stoll and Trent Giesey-Phoenix are at the tackles, guards will be Grant Huston and Easton Korody and Carson Pahl will be snapping the ball. A lot of the same players will be on the defense as Yeater, Huston, GieseyPhoenix and Carson Pahl will man the defensive line. Williams, Cameron Pahl and Jacob Reinhart are the linebackers and the secondary includes Bryce Conti and Hayden Nash at the corners and Lonsway and Billock at the safety spots.

I think they've come together more this season and we will have a quicker offense than we did last season with Wagner back.” Bell said she had liked the leadership her seniors have shown so far and that the

team just needs some confidence. “Offensively, we have some talented hitters … it's just the defense is a little shaky right now,” Bell said. “We don't have any confidence in our back row defensively. We have a couple girls that can jump out of the gym offensively, so if they get a good report with Wagner setting, our offense should be solid this year.” Still with some newer players with not much experience, Bell said to be near the top of the N10 will be the goal this season.

More physical Chieftains head to SBC River Division BY ZACH BAKER

Sports Editor zbaker@advertiser-tribune.com

BASCOM — Brian Colatruglio admitted there were times last season when he knew his team was in trouble. The Chieftains won four games last season, but went 3-5 in their final season in the Blanchard Valley Conference. And going against powerhouses like McComb and Leipsic proved a monumental task. Especially up front. “There were three or four games last year where we just didn’t have a chance,” Colatruglio said. “We were just physically outmatched, and I don’t see that happening (this year).” Last year was rough for H-L offensive and defensive lines, mainly due to inexperience. But as frustrating as it was at the time, it gave some players a chance to see varsity time. And that will be a benefit this season. “The offseason, the transformation of our young lineman in this fall, winter and spring and summer has been amazing,” Colatruglio said. “We are going to be young up front, and a little bit inexperienced, but we have some big bodies,

back in Sam Stickley. But without a strong line, deception was a major part of things. “I think we’re gonna be a little more physical up front than we were last year,” Colatrugio said. “To be honest, last year, we had to smoke-and-mirror people. Sam was fast, so we could use that to try and get him out. But there comes a point, once you kind of trick them and fool them, that you have to line up and try to block people, and we couldn’t do that last year. “I think the biggest difference this year is, I think when we need to just line up and get tough yards and be able to block and get first downs, I think we’re gonna be able to do it this year,” Colatruglio said. That confidence extends to the line on the other side of the ball. That group will be led at the end spots, by Boes and Ethan Watkins. “We have two defensive ends I think will be really, really good,” Colatruglio said. Daniel Lommerse also will be part of the mix at the ends, while Bryson Fuller, Vitt and Ryan Cook will see time in the middle.

and some guys we definitely think can do it.” It starts with Ryan Cook and Ethan Watkins, who are expected to fill a couple spots on the offensive side, and Brandon Boes and Brodie Vitt also are expected to start. Senior Adam Daniel — who is the only player on the roster to have been part of the program for four years, will get the nod at center. Colatruglio said Matthew Rybka will be a fill in and swingman. The coach is more confident that the strength of the o-line will allow the offense to do more. A year ago, H-L had a star running I please see CHIEFTAINS, 43

Juniors Bryce Arbogast; Caden Crawford; Trey Masterson. Sophomores Isreal Risner; Kaeden Siebenaller. Others: Senior Collin Reinhart. Sophomore Layne Butturff. Freshman Cody Foos; Mason Rathburn; Garrett Reinhart; Beau Schmitz. Outlook: Considering HopewellLoudon didnʼt lose anyone off of a trip to state last season, the Chieftains have high expectations this year. The Chieftains won the BVC for the final time and made it to state, where Foster was 16th. He won the BVC title.

“Foster has definitely improved from last year,” Coleman said. “Heʼs going to have a great senior season because he has put in the hard work and heʼs really ahead of where he was at this time a year ago.” The Chieftains also return Durbin, Meade and Arbogast (All-BVC honorable mentions), Ritchey, who was runner-up to Foster in the BVC meet and Rumschlag and Crawford (both two-time All-BVC selections). “Hopes are high for us this year. The goal is to definitely make it back down to state this year, but we just need to stay grounded,” Coleman said. “We will not take anything for granted and we need to keep putting the work in week by week. “We also need to stay healthy, which is key throughout a season.”

Wyman; Alivia Roerdink; Izzy Frankart; Kari Flechtner; Hazel Stone; Abby Oswalt; Emily Foster. Outlook: With 22 girls on the roster, Hopewell-Loudon has a lot of competition on the squad. Coming off its last BVC title, the Chieftains enter the SBC River with a lot of confidence and experience. “We only had 12 last year on the roster and we almost doubled that,” Jones said. “We only lost Renae Kapelka off of last yearʼs team, so we are excited to get things going this season.” Hoover, Brickner, Joseph, Shellhammer, Suter and Leiter all return from the championship team. Leiter was a first-team All-BVC selection, while Hoover and Brickner were second team and Joseph was honorable mention. “We have a nice pack this season between runners 3-7 I think,” Jones said. “We have a couple that stand out in the front, but with a lot of new kids, we arenʼt really sure what to expect at this point. “Iʼve been really impressed with this team in the offseason. I donʼt think weʼve ever had this high of attendance in the summer and we have some really good leadership on this team.” The keys for the Chieftains, like most other teams in cross country, is health. They have a big team, but 11 of them havenʼt ran a 5K before, so there is some inexperience there, so injuries could be key. “Iʼm not really sure what to expect league-wise, but I know Gibsonburg has some nice runners back and will be pretty solid and we know Calvert, Lakota and the others always have strong programs to contend with.”

Outlook: Weaver is a little disappointed in the slow start this season, but she knows her squad has a lot of veterans and experience back, so they will get going eventually this season. “Weʼre off to a slow start, definitely,” she said. “I think itʼs just finding our groove at this point and trying to replace our one senior last season — Chelsey Depinet.” The Chieftains do have quite a bit back, but early in the season, they all have to find their roles and how they work within the game plan.

“We look like offensive and defensive linemen on a high school football team,” he said. “I think that’s gonna really pay dividends for us.” H-L had an all-state caliber back the last few seasons in Stickley, but he graduated last spring. To replace him, Colatruglio will be looking to some players with talent, if not experience. “We don’t have anybody who’s carried the ball at a varsity game during meaningful time,” Colatruglio said. “That’a a big mystery for us. We’ve got a couple guys — we’re probably not gonna have one, but a couple — that are gonna fit that bill.” CJ Smith and Welly are

“We have a good core back, which is always helpful down the road, but the start of the season is always rough,” Weaver said. “I think that experience will be a strength. We had some injuries last season, so even some of the younger girls got some time last season, which I hope benefits us this season. “I hope we can finish in the Top 3 (in the SBC River) this season. Thatʼs our goal when we sit down and talk about goals. We are switching to a league where we normally saw three of the teams regularly, so we know what we are walking in to, but there is still a little unknown. I just want them to have fun this season and be competitive, thatʼs all you can ask from them.”

the favorites for playing time. Welly is just a freshman. “He’a a 200-pound kid, and he doesn’t look like or play like a freshman,” Colatruglio said. “He’s very talented and is gonna be a very good football player, so we think we have two guys who can really handle that spot.” H-L also has two options at quarterback. One is Luke Jameson, who at an imposing 6-6, 210 pounds, is more of a pocket passer. He also has experience, starting games in each of the last two years. But 5-9 Ashton Bour also is a candidate to be the starting signal caller. “He’s more of a dual threat athlete back there,” Colatruglio said of the sophomore. “He can make the throws, but he’s also

pretty good in the run game, a pretty tough runner, and pretty elusive, so we’ve got some options there. They are two very different kids, and they’re still kind of battling it out, and we’ll see what happens before Week 1.” If there’s one spot on offense where the Chieftains bring back a number of experienced players, it’s at wide receiver. Travis Milligan, Cook and Jordyn Jury all are back. Jury’s brother Ried will be at the fourth receiver spot, while Lommerse and Bryce Avalon will see time at tight end or fullback, depending on the personnel group H-L is using. “We’ll use a lot of personnel groups,” Colatruglio said. “We use a tight end. If we think we can block people, we’ll get into some two-back stuff,

but we’re still gonna spread people out, and do what we’ve always done. So, we’ll be as diverse as our personnel will allow us, and if we have tight ends and fullbacks, we’ll use them.”

On the defensive side, the Chieftains will be dealing with some new varsity players at the linebacker spots. But CJ Smith returns after a solid 2018 at the Mike position. “We don’t have a ton of

experience anywhere,” Colatruglio said. “Obviously, we’re looking for (Smith) to be a big part of our defense.” Milligan and Adam Sendelbach are set to play

Seneca East Tigers

After incredible run, Tigers ready to do it again BY ZACH BAKER

Sports Editor zbaker@advertiser-tribune.com

ATTICA — Seneca East keeps losing talented players to graduation. Coach Ed Phillips said there are five from the program who now are playing college ball. The team’s last two top tailbacks — Brock Martin and Blaine Swartzmiller — are each at the next level, with Ohio Northern and Ohio Dominican, respectively. But the Tigers are still one of the favorites to win the Northern 10 Athletic Conference. Last year was perhaps the best in program history; in 2018, Seneca East reached the Division VI state semifinals. Phillips said the continued success may be of the players being cognizant of more than the present. “We talk about legacy here all the time,” Phillips said. “I think that’s something you have to believe in, something you have to work for. Our kids do that.” And for the players that remain, it’s about building on what Seneca East did a year ago. “Anytime you get to some point on the mountain, I think one thing that you realize is that you can get there,” Phillips said. “And to climb that mountain again, you expect to get back there, and you want to get back there. That certainly is the goal, and that’s the great thing about legacies: You pass it on to somebody else,

“We talk about legacy here all the time. I think that’s something you have to believe in, something you have to work for. Our kids do that.” — Ed Phillips, Seneca East football coach so hopefully they can improve on it.” Someone who likely will play a big role in that is quarterback Chase Foos, the senior starter. Foos threw 18 touchdowns last year, and is primed for another big season. But his continued development off the field is what has pleased Phillips. “He’s playing very well, and the great thing about his summer and his camp is that we knew he could throw the ball, but he has become such a leader, and a teacher,” Phillips said. “Any given day, something’s gonna be not the way he wants to see it, and he’s gonna go up and talk to one of his teammates like he’s a coach, and explain to them what they need to do. And sometimes, when the team needs a little pick-me-up, he’ll chew on teammates, and try to get them to raise

their level, too.” But that doesn’t mean the quarterback is an ogre. “He knows how to have a lot of fun,” Phillips said. “And I think, our senior class, they’ve been here for the bulk of the playoff runs, and man, do they like football, and they like each other, and they like having fun. They’re just doing a super job of all those things, and that’s what makes programs special.” Another thing that can make a program special is a star tailback. The Tigers had that a year ago in Swartzmiller, who ran for 2,442 yards. Phillips said it won’t be a one-man show. Elijah Riggs and Kane Lynch will be in the backfield, while Alec Gomez opened eyes in the offseason and in a recent scrimmage. And Phillips praised the work of Skyler Walker. “I think we can play a lot of people there, and they have a lot of different traits that present challenges for a defense,” Phillips said, “and that’s exciting, because one thing I’ve always liked is, Blaine was a horse for us last year, but I like getting a lot of people involved, and I think that’s something that could really happen this year.” In the decade since Phillips became coach here, he has always run an offense where backs and receivers are almost interchangeable. He said it’s much the same this season.

Jensen trying to bring competitiveness, wins back to BC BY MATT NYE

Assistant Sports Editor mnye@advertiser-tribune.com

NEW WASHINGTON — Buckeye Central has a new coach this season, but Chad Jensen is hardly new to the Bucks. The longtime baseball coach and assistant coach of the football team decided to take the reigns this season as his kids are moving closer to high school. “I started here in 2004 under Mike Tracy for four years and then Jason Ratliff for five and then Jeff Niedermier for three and I stepped down after Jeff’s final year in ‘15,” Jensen said, “which was Grant Loy’s senior year. “I’ve coached fifth and sixth grade, my son’s team. But before that I was an assistant at Crestline, so I’ve been an assistant for more than 20 years really.” Jensen said he got the itch to coach again after coaching youth levels the last few years. “I’ve been on an 0-10 staff and I’ve been on a state final staff, so I’ve seen it all,”Jensen said. “I thought I could help our kids. Thought I could get a good staff together and I was able to.” It won’t be easy for Jensen as the Bucks haven’t won a game since 2016 when the team was 2-8. The Bucks do have 25 players on the roster this year,

“It’s all about accountability.” — Chad Jensen, Buckeye Central football coach

of his passes with five TDs and seven picks. “I expect improvement from him every day and we’ve seen that already. He’s embraced it. He’s been extremely coachable,” Jensen said. “He wants to be the best quarterback he can be. I’m actually his QB coach and I’m on him every day, and he knows that. I’ve seen improvement, but he just needs to be more consistent with his fundamentals and he knows that.” The Bucks also bring back running back Jacob Maxhimer and tight end Jake Heefner. Along with some experience on the line. Nate Thompson, Garrett Harrison, Wyatt Martin, Tommy Phillips, Danny Utz and Nick Ramey all return on the line. “We want to run the football. We want to keep the other team’s offense off the field. That’s been our goal from Day 1,” Jensen said. “I think our strength is our offensive and defensive lines. We want to run the football and be physical. We want to have ball control with our prostyle offense.” The Bucks have a familiar schedule that they’ve played the past few years, which might have an opportunity for some wins. They open with Crestline, at

which is an improvement. They also have some experience back at some key positions, but it all starts with the philosophy Jensen wants to instill within the program after a few rough seasons. “It’s all about accountability,” Jensen said. “We had a great summer. The kids showed up and we had a 100 percent attendance. We talk talk about doing things the right way. We want to be fundamentally sound. We just hang our hat one being accountable and putting the work in. Our kids have been great and they’ve done everything we’ve wanted them to do. They are tired of losing and they are going to do everything they can to not let that happen again” One of the biggest returnees for the Bucks is 6-foot-4 quarterback Brady Kerschner. Clyde Fliers

2018: 7-4, 4-1 SBC Lake Head coach: Ryan Carter.

Another year, but same goals for Fliers BY MATT NYE

Assistant Sports Editor mnye@advertiser-tribune.com

CLYDE — In this region of Ohio, football experts and fans alike know what to expect from Clyde every season. Coach Ryan Carter is consistent with his answers in interviews and his team is consistently winning on Friday nights. Every year the Fliers lose players to graduation, but in the end, it doesn’t matter. They are a perennial playoff team and last year they won a tough SBC Lake Division. The injuries caught up to the Fliers late in the season, resulting in a firstround loss in the Division III playoffs to Rocky River on their home field. “We felt very happy with winning our league last year. We just ran into the injury bug at the end of the year and with the playoff game, we ran into a team that was hot and at full strength and we just didn’t have enough firepower and didn’t play very well that night as well. “Last year we gave everything we had every game and gave ourselves a chance to win the league, which we did and we wanted to host a playoff game, which we also achieved. “Those are our goals each year and

“Those are our goals each year and they don’t change this year, either.” — Ryan Carter. Clyde football coach, on competing for a league title and hosting a playoff game they don’t change this year either.” Carter said he likes what he has coming back at the skill positions, including senior quarterback Ryan Lozier, but up front on both sides of the ball will be the deciding factor as to what type of season the Fliers have. “We have to find some up front people. I have Trent Cook and Frank Fultz both at guards and started,” Carter said. “We have those two kids back with experience, but that’s basically it. We are looking for guys to step up there. “But having Ryan back at QB and Gunner (Golden) back at running back with Adam Koviak also back at wide re-

ceiver, we are liking our chances. Also, with Carson (Rieman) back from injury he adds a lot of talent on the outside.” Carter said Lozier has taken ownership of the team this season and his maturity and leadership skills have really blossomed in his senior season so far. “He’s a leader by example,” Carter said. “He’s not afraid to jump on that teammate even if that teammate is also a senior and one of his friends and he led by example in the offseason as far as getting guys in for morning workouts and getting extra throws in after practice. He has shown us and his teammates the right way to do things.” Other than Lozier on the offense, Koviak and Rieman will be on the outside at wide receivers, while slot receivers will be Kaiden Olson, Griffin Noftz, Brady Wilson and Will Lozier all will see time there, according to Carter. Up front, Jack Morrison will play tight end, Hank Webb will be the center, Cook and Fultz are the guards and the tackle spots will be a mix of Jace Pennycuff, Ben Seavers, Walker Britt, Trent Mominee. Wingbacks will be Caden Berger, Chase Berger and Golden and Nick Webb.

Coach: Ethan Reinhart, second season. 2018: Seventh in Sandusky Bay Conference River Division. Key returners: Senior Brooklyn Williams. Junior Grace Clouse. Sophomores Jessica Nye, Gabrielle Nye. Others: Juniors Genna Elchert, Jenna Gabel, Kayleigh Lininger. Freshman Isabelle Wood. Outlook: Four veterans return for New Riegel, looking to better the teamʼs conference finish from last year. “What weʼre working for is continuing to build off last year. We had nice time drops across the board all season long and we have a lot of enthusiasm coming into this year. Just trying to be more

competitive overall and work our way up as a team (in meets),” Reinhart said. He acknowledged that many of his runners are relatively new to cross country and use it as conditioning for other sports. However, he said their competitive nature should shine through once the season gets going. “Theyʼre highly competitive young ladies so I donʼt discount anyoneʼs ability to come out and get real motivated and just unleash something,” Reinhart said.

Coach: Jon Price, second season. 2019: 19-5, 11-3 Sandusky Bay Conference River Division. Key returners: Seniors Marianna Tiell (S/DS), Braelyn Moes (DS), Kaitlyn Kirian (MH), Julia Reinhart (OH), Brooklyn Gillig (L). Junior Jordan Hohman (MH). Sophomore Aubrey Bouillon (S/OH). Others: Senior Lily Snyder (DS). Junior Bria Dailey (OH). Sophomores Maya Bodart (RS/S), Makenzie Kemenah (RS), Sydney Hohman (RS), Olivia Shaferly (OH). Outlook: New Riegel brings back the veterans. Now they need to work on working together. “I think the biggest strength is just experience. We return quite a few girls — actually the main core of the team — so our hitting is probably our strong point, and our aggressive serving,” Price said. “At times we struggle with our passing and communication,” he said. “Those are probably our biggest things we need to improve on to in-

crease our win total from last year.” The talent is there, led by Jordan Hohman (182 kills, 21 aces) and Kirian (286 kills, 32 aces). Price said their play this year will be key to the teamʼs success. “Theyʼre returning at the middle hitter position and theyʼve improved their blocking a lot from last year, and I think thatʼs going to help us out a bunch,” he said. “Theyʼre two of our more go-to hitters.” Tiell (180 assists) is another player Price said heʼll lean upon. “The one person thatʼs really stepped up for so far this year is Marianna Tiell. She was a setter last year, but only for a couple rotations, and sheʼs stepped up her leadership,” he said. “I canʼt take her off the floor now, I have her playing all the way around.” Bouillon (142 kills, 32 aces, 196 digs, 520 assists), Reinhart (110 kills) and Gillig (36 aces, 162 digs) will also be counted upon in the teamʼs quest to do better in the postseason.

FALL SPORTS Fostoria Redmen

2018: 4-6, 3-4 Northern Buckeye Conference. Head coach: Derek Kidwell, sixth season (105-89). Assistant coaches: J.R. Haupert, Kevin Keckler, Jeremy Robbins, Tony Stahl, Roy Findlay, John Groth, Greg Fleming.

Fostoria primed for turnaround season BY JOHN MONTGOMERY

Sports Writer jmontgomery@advertiser-tribune.com

FOSTORIA — Winning season. Conference title. Playoffs. It’s been a while since Fostoria has experienced any of them — 2008, in fact, when the Redmen shared the Northern Ohio League crown and finished 10-2 with a postseason appearance. The best they’ve managed since then is a pair of 5-5 marks (2011, 2017). Coach Derek Kidwell said turning that around has been spotlighted by a senior group led by Devin Mauricio, Roger Hall and Keshawn CarterStokes. “There’s been a conversation amongst the locker room,” Kidwell said. “Focused group that’s had goals in their mind for a while,” he said. “Now that it’s their senior year, they’ve got some things they want to accomplish.”

“Now that it’s their senior year, they’ve got some things they want to accomplish.” — Derek Kidwell, Fostoria football coach, on his senior class They won’t come easily. Six of Fostoria’s foes posted winning marks last year, including three playoff teams. While Kidwell expects fierce competition throughout the Northern Buckeye Conference, he said the conference race should prove intriguing. He said Eastwood might be the earlier favorite since Otsego and reigning champ Genoa both graduated key players, while Rossford, Elmwood

and Woodmore all look to be improved. “I think it will be interesting,” he said. “I think it will be a wide open year in the league.” One thing not wide open for the Redmen is the roster. Although 13 of their 15 seniors played significant time last year, the Redmen (4-6, 3-4 Northern Buckeye Conference) are a bit light on numbers again this season with a roster of 35. Six juniors, five sophomores and nine freshmen round out a team on which few of this year’s non-seniors have experience. “Senior-heavy. Struggling to get young kids to commit and stay out. I would like a few more,” Kidwell said. Then there are the holes to fill. Graduation claimed tailback Maalik Tucker, who ran for 1,232 yards and 12 scores. Jayden Miller (582 yards rushing, 8 TDs) and Alex Sierra (9 receptions, 92 yards) also graduated.

Coach: Krissy Lotycz, fifth year. 2019: 19-4, 13-1 Northern Buckeye Conference, outright NBC title. Returning letterwinners: Juniors Zoe Rice (OH), Dashani Taylor (MH). Sophomore Jasmine Groves (S). Others: Juniors Momo Jones (OH), Kamari Godfrey (DS), Jolie Counts (DS, S), Ali Sierra (RS). Outlook: The faces may be new, but the goal remains the same. “Despite the graduation loss, the girls are all excited to continue the tradition of where we left off last year and what we started back in 2015,” Lotycz said. “They have an opportunity now to shine on the floor at the varsity level. Thereʼs definitely going to be some growing pains, just experiencing that leadership loss that we lost with the five seniors, but theyʼre excited about this season.” But they have big roster spots to fill, and none bigger than the one formerly held by Tyriana Settles (642 kills, 58 aces, 32 solo blocks, 56 total blocks, 266 digs).

Last yearʼs All-Ohio firstteam, district player of the year and NBC player of the year graduated after setting a program record with 2,073 career kills and helping the Redmen claim last yearʼs NBC title — their first conference crown since the 1970s. Fostoria also tied a program record with its fourthconsecutive winning season, going 64-30 over that stretch. The previous four-straight winning seasons came during 2001-04 when the Redmen went 63-29. The Redmen also graduated Mary Harris (460 assists, 109 kills, 233 digs), Dakota Thomas (346 assists), Baleigh Robinson (65 kills, 45 aces, 195 digs) and Meredith Grine (48 kills, 27 aces, 193 digs), leaving voids throughout the lineup with just three returning veterans on a team with no seniors. Lotycz said the approach wonʼt change, though she admitted it may take time to get rolling again. “Weʼre not going to coach them anything less (than before), weʼre still going to coach them as if we were a 19-3 team,” she said.

Fostoria Cross Country

Fostoria cross country (front, left): Tyler Cobb, Trevor Nowicki, Justin Jordan, Dominic Jackson, Quincy McDonald, Jacob Seagro (back) Kim Fant-Cousin, Wyatt Russell, Dezerea Miranda, Macey Sheets, Haili O'Neal, Wyatt Cobb, Samuel Smith.

Coach: Kim Cousin 2019: BOYS — sixth in Northern Buckeye Conference. GIRLS — seventh in NBC. Returning letterwinners: BOYS — Seniors Tyler Cobb, Justin Jordan. Juniors Dominic Jackson, Wyatt Russell. Sophomores Wyatt Cobb, Trevor Nowicki. GIRLS — Senior Macey Sheets. Juniors Dezerea Miranda, Hailie OʼNeal. Others: BOYS — Sophomores Quincey McDonald, Sam Smith. Freshman Jacob Seagro. GIRLS — Junior Janay Williams. Outlook: Both groups have veterans, but only the boys have enough to fill out a full team this year. “Obviously, thatʼs my strength. The weakness is not enough girls to run as a team,” Cousin said. Cousin said the boys will definitely build off their experience while looking to lower their times. “Theyʼre all familiar with the courses, they know each others abilities, they know what it takes to be in the top numbers,” she said. “Keeping them all together, keeping them all in close proximity to each other with their running is going to be key to where we end up as far as the season progresses.” A hurdle, though, could come from trying to replace a runner due to some sort of absence, Cousin added. “I really donʼt have those strong (non-veteran) runners with a lot of experience that can

take their spot,” she said. “The big thing is to be able to keep the top six healthy and (to keep them) pushing each other all the time.” Cousin said she expects the same from the girls as they teach Williams, a sprinter from the track team, how to run distance. Sheets and OʼNeal are former all-NBC cross country runners, although Sheets was hampered by a mid-season injury last year. Since the girls wonʼt field a full team, Cousin said they will often be forced to run in the open races at meets. While those races are for junior varsity teams, Cousin said they also include varsity runners who, like the Redmen, donʼt have enough participants to field a full team. She said sheʼs already told her runners to embrace those scenarios. “Thereʼs going to be opportunities where youʼll be able to be put into an open race and it wonʼt be a varsity race, but at the same time, youʼve got to remember some of those kids that come out of the open races are varsity runners — theyʼre in the same situation as you are. Itʼs not because theyʼre a JV team, itʼs because they donʼt have enough girls to run that particular race (as a team),” Cousin said. “So I said youʼve got to look at it like that, I donʼt want you looking at it as being an open race thatʼs a JV race because itʼs not,” she said. “Thatʼs the thing that they have to do, just keep that mental focus.”

Mauricio will also return, but not at quarterback. At least not right away. He’s nursing a broken thumb and is wearing a cast, so Kidwell said the senior will split time at tailback and receiver. Mauricio, who moved from receiver to QB last year, threw for 771 yards and five touchdowns in 2018 and ran for another 165 yards and four scores. Junior Dominique Settles, who Kidwell said brings athleticism and intelligence to the field, will start the year calling plays. Seniors Xavier Diaz (5-130 receiving) and Bryan Stenson (19-197 rushing, 10-208 receiving, 3 TDs) will also find time at running back. The receiving corps will be headed up by senior Avondre Reed (8-212 receiving, 3 TDs). “Offensive line-wise, that’s where we’re the thinnest. We have four seniors and one junior. We have no depth after that. Skill-wise, we’re OK. We’re OK at running back also,

more dot the roster. “We had hopes that weʼd see everyone coming back and we were able to retain (a lot) and pick up some incoming freshmen,” coach Reinhart said. “Pretty exciting. It makes for some good practices, having this much depth. Itʼs nice.” Seven veterans return to anchor the 22-runner roster, but coach Reinhart said the youngsters have already made their presence known. “A lot of enthusiasm with the younger group, a lot of team energy — wanting to see success as a group in a sport thatʼs pretty widely known for being an individual sport,” he said. “Weʼve just been able to get a lot of good work done as a unit.”

we’ve got some options,” Kidwell said. “We’ll try to be balanced; may throw the football a little bit more,” he said. “We’ll definitely throw the ball more than we did last year. It fits our personnel and our strengths, but we’re not going to ignore the run game.” The Redmen will stick with their 3-5-3 defense, anchored around the play of seniors Zach Chavana, Jacob Franklin and Carter-Stokes at inside linebacker and Mauricio and Stenson at outside linebacker. “Those five have played well together and have a lot of experience,” Kidwell said. “We’re going to be aggressive, bring a lot of pressure with our linebackers,” he said. As with any season, Kidwell said a major part of finding success will come from avoiding injuries and overcoming a lack of depth. “I really like our starting 11 (on both sides of the ball). We’ve got 16, 17 kids that we’re rotating,” he said. “Special teams can be an issue also; you’re trying to use some reserve players to give some kids breaks.”

Coach: Yvette Anez, fifth season. 2018: 7-10. Key returners: Seniors Mya Weimerskirch, Imani Velazquez, Abriana Swartz. Sophomore Raelyn Hoffman. Others: Seniors Maddie Cook, Jenny Chasco. Junior Jocelyn Bisson. Sophomore Shay Olin. Freshmen Jenna Johnson, Garyana Overton, Lexi Coleman, Alyssa Durst, Anna Branch. Outlook: Fostoria turned in one of its better seasons last year, with a handful of its 10 losses coming in close contests. But the Redmen also graduated four players from that team, including a district-qualifying doubles squad, leaving them with challenges. “We don't have a lot of experience. I've got seven first-year players, with five of them being

freshmen. They're all just learning the game, picked up a racket the first day of practice,” Anez said. “It's a learning experience for all of them.” Anez said the veteran seniors look to have the inside track on the first through third singles spots, with the other seniors and Hoffman filling in at singles and on doubles teams. The goal, she said, is for the players to enjoy learning the game while improving. “We've always said we want to come out and have a little bit of fun. Most of my kids, it's an introduction to tennis and it's a secondary sport for most of them; just something to do in the fall,” she said. “But numbers are growing, which is a positive thing. “We're a pretty balanced team,” she said. “Everybody's competing for a spot.”

Browns not clowns, maybe title contenders

CLEVELAND (AP) — Those rabid, barking Browns fans have suffered in sadness longer than any group in the NFL, bar none. They’ve never watched their team play in the Super Bowl, haven’t experienced the playoffs since 2002 or bundled up and attended a postseason home game in 25 winters. There’s a faction of the orange-and-brown backers who remain bitter about late owner Art Modell moving the franchise to Baltimore. The expansion era has been beyond torturous: two decades of disgrace, despair and dysfunction. Like this proud city, which has taken its share of lumps over the years, Cleveland’s beloved team has been a national punchline. Well, the joke might be on someone else this time. An array of potent offensive weapons surrounding fiery second-year quarterback Baker Mayfield is joined by an imposing defensive front four led by super freak end Myles Garrett. The Browns, who went 0-16 just two years ago and have symbolized professional incompetence — 29 starting QBs, 11 coaches in 20 years — are expected by many not only to contend this season but perhaps compete for their first league title in 55

years. It’s about time. “I’m excited for the direction we’re moving in,” said star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., whose arrival in March via a stunning trade with New York Giants has lifted the collective psyche of this football-frenzied region. “I can see it. I can feel it from the fans. I can feel it from this team.” Once ignored, the Browns have become the league’s trendiest team, this season’s favorite flavor. And it all starts with Mayfield, the 2018 No. 1 overall pick who began last season as Tyrod Taylor’s backup and finished it breaking Peyton Manning’s league rookie record for touchdown passes. Equal parts brash and boyish, Mayfield officially took over in Week 4 and went 6-7 as a starter while completing 64 percent of his passes, exuding the swagger that has driven him since his youth. The 24-year-old has restored hope into the most cynical of Browns fans, who waited patiently for the team to find its long-term answer at the game’s most critical position. “I think that I was born to play here,” he said.

2018: 4-6, 2-3 SBC Lake Head coach: Ed Nasonti.

Bellevue trying to rebound after rare below-.500 season BY MATT NYE

Assistant Sports Editor mnye@advertiser-tribune.com

BELLEVUE — It’s not too often a Bellevue season ends in the regular season under coach Ed Nasonti. The Redmen are a perennial playoff team, but last season was a rebuilding year with a lot of new faces. Fortunately for the Redmen, basically everyone is back after a 4-6 campaign which ended with big wins over Sandusky (playoff team) and rival Clyde (playoff team). “When you look at last year, combined with a tough schedule, we had six sophomores that started,” Nasonti said. “There were some growing pains throughout the season and at times we thought we were struggling, but we lost four games by a total of 14 points, so

and 10. Hopefully we can hit the ground running this year and that experience we got last year can serve us well.“ Being at 4-6 last season, the Redmen still just missed the playoffs in Division IV, which is a testament to the type of schedule they usually play. This season, Bellevue has 19 returning letterwinners. One of them being junior quarterback Keegan Ray. He was thrown into the starting role a season ago after Treston Francis led the Redmen deep in the playoffs as a Wildcat-type of QB in ’17. Ray has the ability to throw and run and with a full year of experience under his belt, Nasonti is looking for big things out of No. 12. “We feel like at this point, we are ahead of where we were last year in all facets of our game,” Nasonti said.

those four games could of went either way. “Through it all, I was proud of our players and our coaches because we hung in there and kept swinging and we were able to get two nice wins Week 9 I please see BELLEVUE, 67

“We’re still focusing on having solid practices, focusing on the details that will help us be a good football team. We talk to the kids all the time about it about giving great effort and be physical. Hopefully all the pieces of the puzzle get put together and hopefully some good things will happen for us.” On good thing potentially for the Redmen already this season was senior Caleb Marshall joining the team. The 6-foot-6 athletic wide receiver was a beast in

Bellevue Volleyball basketball last winter and Nasonti said the athleticism and potential is there, he just needs some more work on the details. “Caleb’s done a good job this summer and had a great camp for us,” he said. “He’s been positive and him being a playmaker I hope he can be a difference maker. We are trying to force feed him a little bit as he hasn’t played since he was in the eighth grade. He’s got some learning to do and obviously the skill level is there.” As far as the offense this season, behind Ray will be Jack Howey at fullback and Mason Miller at tailback. Receivers will be Jack Fitzgeraldm Derek Raif-

snider, Hunter Martin, Evan King and Seth Gerhardstein at tight end. On a talented and experienced line, Hunter Nottke is the center, while the guards are Joe Commarato and Curtis Royster. The tackles will be Tristen DeWitt and Case Zilch. On the other side of the ball, corners will be Miller and Raifsnider while Fitzgerald will man the safety spot. Linebackers include Max Ray, Howey, Justin Mayes and Dalton Weller. The defensive line consists of Brock Nunez, Damion Hay, Logan Ray and Collin Corapi. The defense will try to slow down some explosive talent in the SBC Lake this season, espe-

cially Terion Stewart from Sandusky. But before the Redmen will get their chance at the league, another tough nonleague campaign awaits. “We give Port Clinton credit because they want to give us a crossover game … it’s sad to say you only have one crossover game out of the five and then you have to travel to Madison, travel to Clear Fork, you have Toledo Start and University School, which is in Cleveland,” Nasonti said. “There’s no use in worrying about the schedule because our biggest opponent is ourselves. As a coaching staff, we are going to focus on our own team and let the chips fall

where they may. “The SBC is definitely going to be a gauntlet because of all the talented teams and the experienced coaches in this league.” In the end, Nasonti hasn’t focused a whole lot on last season and how things went, he always is looking at the now and where his team can be by the end of the season. “We always tell our kids to be where our feet are, which means to live in the moment where you stand right now, “ he said. “I think if we would have hammered on the kids when we were 2-6 entering the last two games, I’m not sure we would have won those last two games.”

And tailbacks won’t just be tailbacks. Lutz said that the running back group will include Nick Jackson, Brody Conley. Koerper, Jaxon Harris and Kesean Jackson. Hunter Richarson and Kasean Hatlay will also be there. Lutz said the pair were more “fullback-type” runners. It is expected to be running back by committee, and it will be the same for the receivers.

On the flipside, Koviak and Rieman will play the corners, while Andrew Bauer will rotate in at cornerback. Webb will be the safety. Derick Coleman returns at linebacker, while Dillon Overmyer is also back and Mason Dick, Golden and Jeremiah Halbeisen will all be in the mix for a linebacker spot. Blue Norman will be a defensive tackle, Morrison will be at end, Fultz will also play defensive end and Robbie Greenslade will see some time there as well. Victor Guzman-Moreno will do the kicking this year. He is also on the soccer team. Jaden Cook will be the punter and Chase Berger will do a lot of the kickoff stuff. Just like many of the Lake Division teams, the Fliers play a tough non-league schedule, which this year includes Belmont and Thurgood Marshall, who are both Dayton schools.

“To be honest, no one wants to travel to Dayton to play a football game,” Carter said. “It’s tough sometimes to find teams for games in the local areas and guys that will play you, so it makes creating a schedule kind of tough. “We have St. Francis De Sales right away and we always have a tough game with Ashland and Toledo Start is Division I. Being in a 3-4 allows you to play with more linebackers, two safeties, and move around.” Lutz said the Tornadoes will probably use five players at the linebacker spots. Hunter Richardson, Conley, Hatlay, Harris and Burden are expected to see the bulk of time there. In the secondary, Frankhauser, Koerper, Kissell and Mason Scott are expected to be featured at safety, while Alex Smith, Reaves, Daniel and Jackson will be at corner. “Coming out of camp, those guys have all shown the ability

to get it done against other varsity kids,” Lutz said. The key for the defense, Lutz said, will be continuing something the Tornadoes were good at last season: limiting big plays. “You want to hang your hat on being explosive on offense, and not giving up explosive plays on defense and also creating turnovers,” he said. On special teams, Xavier Coppus is expected to be the placekicker, with Scott possibly having a role in kicking and punting. Koerper also could punt, while Conley, McDole and Boes could see time at longsnapper.
