Doctoral programmes are growing and diversifying in the European Higher Education Area and globally. Encompassing traditional PhDs as well as structured and professional programmes, their increase is inextricably linked with the development of the knowledge economy and a concomitant focus on creativity and innovation as societal forces with the creative industries as an essential part of post-industrial, economic and social re/generation.
