Monumental mosaic map of Cyprus & Crete, from a German edition of Ortelius eatrum Orbis Terrarum, the rst modern atlas of the World. Ortelius was based on the best available maps of the two islands prior 1570, the maps produced by Camocio’s (1566) & Pagano (1538). Map dim. 43.8 x 39cm, on a sheet with full margins and hand-colouring. Light marginal soiling, overall in Very Fine condition. Zacharakis 2486, Stylianou & Stylianou 65.

Lot. 8464 Starting Price: 2000 € CORONELLI Vincenzo Maria, “Acamantis Insula, hoggidi Cipro, posseduta della republica Veneta sin all Anno 1571”, c.1690. Very Rare and the only large format map of Cyprus, prepared by the great Venetian cartographer V. M. Coronelli. Coronelli impressively presents the island of Cyprus, highlighting island’s historical past, although the Venetians have lost the island by the Ottomans more than 100 years before the edition of the map, in 1571. Imposing composition made up of the coat of arms of the Lusignan dynasty and of the Cornaro family of Venice. e map is dedicated to the famous Venetian nobleman Giovanni Battista Cornaro Piscopia, Procurator of the Basilica of St. Mark. Uncoloured as issued. Worm-holes along middle-fold professionally repaired leaving very light signs on both map sides. Zacharakis 1149, Zacharakis “One Hundred Maps...” 081.
