[Φλάβιος Βελισάριος] Mahon Lord [Philip Stanhope], “The Life of Belisarius”, London, John Murray, 1829. 8vo (13.5x22.5cm), pp. xx, 473, including a large folding map of the “Campaigns of Belisarius”. A first edition of Lord Mahon’s biography of Belisarius. Contemporary binding: full leather, blind-stamped decorations on boards and spine. Rubbed, spine partly detached, in very fine condition inside. Flavius Belisarius was one of the greatest generals of the Byzantine Empire. He was instrumental to Emperor Justinian I’s ambitious project of reconquering much of the old Western Roman Empire, which had been lost just under a century previously. One of the defining features of Belisarius’ career was his operating under conditions of little support from his emperor Justinian and Byzantium, and nonetheless succeeding through military genius. He is also among a select group of men considered to be the “Last of the Romans”. Lot. 3108
