Profile Andrea Quartara enrolled in the graduate program in Architecture in Genoa, in 2007. During undergraduate studies, he developed some project with particular attention to building materials, building tecnologies and urban planning. In the last few years, he took an interest in the changes in architectural design processes caused by the introduction of computers. He self-expanded knowledge about digital architecture, mainly focusing on computer-based form generation, simulation and optimization. The core of his MArch thesis [in]forming form. Generation and mutations of an urban algorithm, developed with Giulio Dini, is the implementation of an algorithmic structure. The thesis produced a masterplan and an architectural scenario for the Erzelli Hill, in Genoa. It planned a multi-objective optimization, which merged three different fitness in a unique digital design workflow. In July 2013 he discussed the thesis. Thereafter, in January 2014 he became a Licensed Architect (section A). In 2013, he become a member of EmergentaGE, a research group of young architects. The group conceived a series of events in collaboration with digital and generative design experts, on some of the most interesting software and topics related to digital design, graphic and 3D printing. In the same year, he became an intern at colouree, a spin-off powered by GOA group architects. Nowadays, he is a PhD student at Department of Science for Architecture, Genoa. His research topic is the digital materialization of virtually improved architectures. PhD thread illustrates a renewed interest in the matter: it restores the tenet that architecture is a practice fundamentally based on material. In September 2015 he joined the Open Thesis Fabrication program at Institute of advanced architecture of Catalonia (IaaC). The expectation of the research is integrating performative design procedures with the digital making of the bespoke.
