Abstract

It’s about the “Bilahi Aku Malagaton” (Ubiandialect “I love Lagaton”) a narrative about what we loved most-its charming people, their history, islanders’ survival strategies and their bright future inside TunMustapha Marine Park. Currently they are income poor but their life in a near future will be better because these people are very resourceful and efficient.

Name of the island and its topography

The island name Lagatonwere derived from Ubiandialect “ lahat pelekatan” meaning a village separated from the main land. Over time, the word evolved and shorten into Lagaton. It’s located on the other tip of Borneo Island, at the top end (North West) of Pitas-Bengkoka Peninsula. In front of the long sandy beach lies a fishing village consisted of ten houses built on stilt above the water (during high tide). This fishing village are shielded from strong wind and pounding waves during monsoon months by a thick vegetation and pristine mangrove forest from west, south and to its south east. Southern coast are jagged rocky areas hence not habitable. Topographically, it is a low laying island with some limestone rocks formation reaching 30 meters in height.
