HEAD COACH: ROBERT ARREOLA FOURTH YEAR (8-23)

America is all about instant gratification. From fast food to streaming video, we want the good stuff and we want it now. Nowhere is the instant gratification mindset more prevalent than in the world of sports. Fans and owners/administrators expect to win every year. That type of pressure can lead to constant upheaval of a team (look at the Oakland Raiders) and, in turn, a lack of success. Because of the “now” mindset, rebuilding has become almost a poisonous word for fans. Rebuilding usually takes a few years as a coaching staff implements its system and players learn what is expected of them.

In 2008, Roswell hired Robert Arreola to coach its football team and he said that he expected to turn the Coyotes into a championship team. The process took longer than Arreola would have liked as Roswell went 3-17 in his first two seasons at the helm. During those two years, Roswell fielded a young team that took its lumps and, in 2010, the Coyotes started to see improvement on the field as they went 5-6 and made the playoffs for the first time since 2006, where they lost to St. Pius X in the first round. While there was no instant gratification early in his tenure, Arreola has built Roswell into a stable team and expectations are high heading into 2011. “The playof fs aren’t enough anymore,” he said. “Last year we hadn’t made (the playoffs) in a while and it almost seemed like we were satisfied because we were in the playoffs. Well we got a little taste of what it is like. After that St. Pius game, it put a bad taste in our mouth and we want to erase that. I know it sounds kind of crazy because we haven’t been in the playoffs much, but we aren’t going to be satisfied with just making it anymore.” In 2010, Arreola said that his team learned how to win and that now that they have experienced winning, they want more of it. “Without a doubt (I have seen a hunger after the playoff loss),” he said.

The Roswell Coyotes run onto the field before the first game of the 2010 season against Carlsbad. Roswell made the playoffs last year for the first time since 2006, so expectations are high for the 2011 version of the Coyotes.

“We have been looking forward to this season for a while. After the St. Pius game, we gave the kids a week off and then we were back to work. What winning will do for a team is amazing. “That was one of the problems; we didn’t know what winning felt like. We aren’t happy with five wins, but having those five wins gave us a taste of what winning is like and, let’s face it, when you win, it feels good and the players want to repeat that. They aren’t satisfied with winning one, two or three games. We know that there is more.

Expectations have increased not only as a coaching staff, but with the players.” If Roswell is to build on its success of 2010, they will have to replace the production and leadership of Kevin Kelly, something Arreola said will be hard. “It is hard when you lose a player like Kevin Kelly,” he said. “Not only is he a great player, but he was a great individual and a great leader. A lot of the guys we have this year have been playing and starting since they were sophoSee COYOTES, Page 5

DAVID ANAYA

“I think the first thing you do is go to his work ethic because we probably don’t have a player that outworks him. He works very hard in the weight room and he works very hard in track. He’s done everything we’ve asked him to do along those lines. He’s stepped up. He’s worked hard in the weight room when we work him there and he’s always working hard in something trying to improve himself. He’s always one of the first kids on the field and always one of the last ones off. He’s just a hard-working kid.” — Sam Jernigan

2010 RECORDS: 11-1 (2-0; FIRST) DISTRICT 4-4A

Jernigan on the team

“I think we’re on schedule now for as much as we know about (the kids) right now. I mean we haven’t played against anybody else, but I’d say we’re ahead of the last couple of years. I think the kids understand the schemes, so they can do the offense and the defense with more confidence. So we’re seeing more aggressiveness and we have more kids that we can count on who have been on the field and we can kind of measure everyone else by that. What we see right now, we think we’re probably a little bit ahead of where we normally are.”

Jernigan on the offensive line

“That’s one of our biggest concerns and it’s one of the places we’re most pleased with. We lose some pretty good guys up there and Kullen Wooten is about the only returner. Juan Lecher has been in the program, so he understands schemes and he’s a pretty good player. He could have gotten on the field a lot last year. Ian Pollock is the same way. Both those kids are pretty proven quantities to us. Chris Chavez is doing a great job. We really thought at the end of the season last year that he really started stepping up and coming on. Juan Vidales is doing a pretty good job at guard, along with Ernesto Rangel. Those kids are giving us some depth and giving us a range of different ways we can go. The tight ends with David Sweet and Nick Aston, they’re doing really good in there. Then David Strickland and Jake Delamater give us a lot of depth at that tight end spot for a change. Josh Quiroz and Tony Ramirez at the 2 and 4 positions, whether or not they’re offensive lineman, they have to block just like offensive linemen. And Ryan Greene makes a pretty good guard; the quarterback does a lot of blocking for us in our schemes. Those guys are all doing a pretty good job for us and blocking is the most important thing we do.”

Jernigan on District 4-4A

“It’s a tough district. When you have all three teams in the playoffs, I think that’s really speaking a lot for all three teams. I think the rest of the teams (in the state) are always trying to look to this district to see what they have to 2010 Schedule & Results do to be competitive. I think that’s where it is again this year, I really do. Aug. 27 Rio Rancho W 34-3 You’re going to have to pay attention Sept. 3 Alamogordo W 27-7 to the southeastern part of the state. Sept. 11 Canyon (Texas) W 40-14 Coach Arreola is doing a great job (at Sept. 24 Portales W 42-0 Roswell) with those kids and, each Oct. 1 Clovis W 21-0 year, they are progressing and getting Oct. 8 Carlsbad W 27-7 better. And I don’t have to say anyOct. 15 Hobbs W 42-0 thing about Artesia. Artesia is Artesia. Oct. 22 Artesia W 39-20 We’re going to do our best to have Oct. 29 Roswell W 42-0 some say in it, one way or another. Nov. 5 Lovington W 53-52 The race is just starting, but the race Nov. 20 Valencia* W 48-14 in November and December is when it Nov. 27 Artesia* L 38-29 really matters. mores. You always look for those guys to step up and a lot of them have. I couldn’t give you just one player (who will step in for Kelly). “We are going to do a lot of what we have been doing, but with different individuals. We have a few running backs we can do a few things with and we also have a bit of speed on the outside as well. We will continue to run the ball and, if somebody is giving us the pass, then we will pass it. I think we will be balanced with the things we do offensively.” To be balanced, Roswell will lean on senior signal caller James Singleton, and Arreola said it is important to

have him under center. “It is always important to have that seasoned quarterback under center,” he said. “He has made our team better because he has taken on the leadership role this year.” Singleton’s job will be made easier with the return of senior wideouts James Singleton and Andrew Collier. Defensively, Roswell plans on using its speed to its advantage. “The defense has been working very hard on tackling and swarming to the ball,” Arreola said. “We don’t want one guy or two guys to tackle the ball carrier. We want all 11 guys going to the ball, so the coaches have stressed getting to the ball. “They have also been working on a lot of pack-

ages and blitzes. We have a lot of speed in our defense. We aren’t the biggest team in the world, but we will get after you.” Getting after teams is just what New Mexico expects out of the Coyotes in 2011, as evidenced by its No. 9 ranking in the NMHSCA preseason poll. With such a high ranking, Roswell won’t be able to sneak up on anybody and with a Top 10 ranking comes the added weight of outside expectations. “A state championship is our ultimate goal,” he said. “When I came to this program that was the goal. I am the type of individual that when I set my mind on something, I am going to work toward it until hell freezes over. l.foster@roswell-record.com

“When I first got here, I thought that we were on the outside looking in on Artesia and Goddard. I thought that we wanted to get in the same neighborhood. We are getting closer. They are two very powerful and tradition-rich programs and their coaches do a great job. I am not saying that they are getting any worse, because they just keep getting better. At the same time, we have to speed it up so we can catch up with them. It’s not that they are getting worse, I think we are just improving a lot more than anything.”

He just wants to help the team and that is his attitude.” — Robert Arreola

HEAD COACH: SHAUN WIGLEY SEVENTH YEAR (53-15)

When public schools field young football teams one year, they don’t get younger the next year. With private schools, however, it is not uncommon for a green team to become more so the following cam-

paign. For the Gateway Christian Warriors football team, a young team in 2010 has gotten younger in 2011, thanks to the departures of a few seniors (Luke Grant and Austin Wulf) as well as a few underclassmen (David Nunez, David Chavers and Taylor Wigley).

2010 RECORDS: 8-4 (2-1; T-FIRST) DISTRICT 3-8M

Luckily, Warrior coach Shaun Wigley, entering his seventh season with Gateway, has experience with losing players. “We were young last year and those key guys that left were going to be juniors,” he said. “That is just the nature of private schools. Some years you can be young and then be young again the next year. This is just one of those years. We have about 20 kids, so it is great, but six of those kids have never played football. “When you are playing 8-man football and you lose eight or nine kids, it is big. I am looking forward to it and I am loving the guys that are here. These kids have a great attitude and they are learning pretty fast.”

The Warriors aren’t just a team of greenhorns, however. Mason Miller, who is entering his third season as the starting signal caller for Gateway, and Chris Taylor will be key to the improvement of their young teammates. “We are going to lean on Mason quite a bit this year,” Wigley said. “Chris Taylor is our center and having those two veterans is big. We are going to lean on those players a lot because of their experience, knowledge and passion to play. Both of those guys are very competitive and they come to practice every day ready to work. They will be relied on heavily to get the job done.” In addition to doing their own jobs, Wigley is going to count on Miller, Taylor and other returning players to be coaches on the field. “(Coaches) can’t be on the field coaching, so those guys have to be able to tell people on the field what to do,” he said. “You have to have those veteran guys that can pass the information along and put people in the right places. We have about four of those guys on the field right now and, in 8-man football, that isn’t too bad.” Fans who enjoy watching offensive line play will see a different style of blocking from Gateway. Wigley on the team

“This year is going to be a learning year, but I am used to that. What we start out as this year will probably be a lot less than what we can finish as. Depending on our learning curve, we can get a lot better, quickly. I think the attitudes are right and so far the work ethic is there. If we can get it done on the field, I think we are heading in the right direction. I am excited about the young kids we have and we have a lot of speed.”

“Melrose is the three-time state champs so you have to put them at No. 1. Tatum has a lot of kids coming back so they are going to be deep and last year they were young, so I am looking for Tatum to be tough. You never know where Floyd is going to be. They were up at the top as much as two years ago and, last year, they were down a little bit. It is hard to say until the season moves on. I would say all the teams in our district will be pretty tough.”

size. This year, however, they are smaller and quicker, which will require Wigley to do different things to create space for his skill-position players. “Offensively, we are going to have some of the same stuff,” he said. “We are going to have to play a little bit different than we did last year because last year we were beefier. This year we are smaller, but a lot faster. That changes up some things that we can do with the line. “I am excited about the young kids we have and we have a lot of

speed. We just have to be aggressive and use good technique when you aren’t as big. That is where we will have a learning curve.” On defense, Wigley said his defense will have to swar m to the ball. “Defensively we are going to have to get to the ball,” he said. “We have got to gang tackle. We are just going to have to have three or four guys on the tackle every time. The key in 8man is when you get in the open field, you have to make those open field tackles.” Despite the youth on his team, Wigley said that expectations on the

Page 7

field are the same as always, but that as a Christian school, they also have other ways to measure success. “To me, success would be these kids coming together as a team,” he said. “We are a Christian school so we have a different standard than some places. My first expectation of success will be what they do in the locker room and how they gel together. If we accomplish that and have a good attitude, that would be great. “Obviously on the field, our goal is to make the playoffs, just like every other year. We are going to have to work hard to get it done.” l.foster@roswell-record.com

“Just like every year, I have high expectations for these kids. I think we have an established program and the kids we have are the ones that have established it. I think with a little bit of direction and a little bit of motivation, what we have here has developed over time. I think this young bunch coming up is going to continue what we have here. As opposed to years past, which has been more run-based, we will open up the offense. I believe our seniors have a big task on their shoulders. We are going to go as far as their 2010 Schedule & Results leadership takes us.” Aug. 27 Vaughn W 56-7 Sept. 3 Clovis Chr. L 65-20 Sept. 10 Immanuel Chr. Last year, they had a Oct. 15 House W 56-6 good group of seniors and, this year, I Oct. 22 Hondo Valley W 71-24 am not sure what they have. Hondo Oct. 29 Elida* W 62-22 has a lot of returning starters and I Nov. 6 Roy* W 67-66 look for great things from them. “We have had a lot of turnover, but the expectations are still high. We have a lot of juniors and they didn’t get a lot of playing time last year, but they did play and they were at practice every day. The only difference will be it is now their time to make the plays. They can come to practice and do a great job, but when you get to the game, it is a different story. There was somebody there in a game to help cover you in case you didn’t do your job. Now they are the guys that need to cover people and they need to make a play. That will be the biggest turnaround we want to see them do. Our expectations are high and reachable. It’s not like we are going to be blind. We know that we are young and inexperienced, but we will keep the expectations really high.”

“New Mexico Military Institute is always the unknown because you don’t know who will be coming back. (NMMI coach Randy) Montoya is an excellent coach and he is replacing an excellent coach. The one thing we know for sure is that Eunice has a real good quarterback (Tyler Almager) coming back and maybe one of the best athletes in 2A coming back (Junior Caraza). Caraza was a high-point man in track and he does it all. They have the proven athletes. I think Loving is going to be improved as well. Loving has a new coach (Robert Hernandez), but he was a coach in the system so I don’t think there will be that many adjustments. I just think that they have a bunch of kids returning and they had a really good track team, so they have some speed there. Honestly, I think we can be very competitive in our district.”

SHANE WALLACE “He’s done very well. We switch him around because he’s just that kind of an athlete. He’s done anything and everything we’ve asked him to do.” — Randy Montoya

2010 RECORDS: 4-6 (2-1; SECOND) DISTRICT 4-2A

Montoya on the team

“We’re behind the eight-ball just because of the unique situation here, so we’re behind, obviously. But that’s no surprise, I knew that coming in. We’re still not where we need to be, but we’re a lot further where we could be, so I’m pretty pleased with that. We’re further than I thought we would be just because of the fact that these kids are high-level thinkers to be able to get into this fine institution. They’re able to pick up things a lot quicker than I anticipated. In that aspect, them learning and knowing what they’re supposed to be doing, I’m really pleased with where we are at when it comes to that.”

Montoya on his expectations

“Starting any position, you want your expectations to start out high. You want these kids to do well and get better, just like anything else. You want try to help the kids become successful. That’s our ultimate goal as a coach is to just help develop a kid fully. Having these kids here and having this different environment, it’s a change everybody and a change for me especially. My expectations are still high and I still want these kids to do well. I still want to play in late November and I still want to be there at the end. Expectations haven’t changed at all. A blue trophy would be a perfect season for us. That’s what we’re shooting for, nothing less. We’re here to develop these kids to the best of their abilities and just helping them become better athletes overall. Any coach, you want to be there at the end, so that’s what we’re shooting for.”

Montoya on making it normal

“What I try to do is really just make it a normal situation. Like make it a true two-a-day situation. We practice in the morning and we practice in the afternoon. Regardless of who is here and who’s not, I just leave it up to them and say, ‘How good do you want this season? Do you want this to just be an OK season or do you want it to be a great season?’ All these guys who have been playing together, we just make it as normal as possible; get up, pull ties, have practice, then rest, and get up and do it again. The kids either buy into it or they don’t, and obviously that’s what makes your team. They know I’m for real and that this is what we need to do, and for the most part, they’ve done well. I’m pretty pleased.”

Montoya on what he’ll run

“It will be the same thing I run traditionally; the double-wing set. We’ll run some toss, run some option, run some power, and try some play-action. We’ll try to spread you out if I have the athletes that I’d like to have, which it looks like I might have. Defensively, it will be pretty much the same too. This coaching staff, they have some good ideas, so I’ve let them run with things the kids already knew.”

NMMI B RONCOS

HEAD COACH: JOSH LYNN FIRST YEAR (0-0)

KEVIN J. KELLER RECORD SPORTS EDITOR

Coaching changes often mean learning an entirely new system with new terminology, new formations and new plays. However, when the change involves an assistant coach taking over for the departing coach, the transition is much smoother for everyone involved. And when that assistant coach is the brother of the departing coach, it should make the change even easier. At least that’s exactly what new NMMI Bronco football coach Josh Lynn is hoping will happen in 2011. L ynn took over the reigns of the Bronco program in December from his brother, Jeff, who departed for another position.

“It’s really exciting,” L ynn said in December about taking the job. “It’s kind of humbling and exciting, in the same breath. NMMI is a good place to be and I was really excited to be able to get the job and kind of head forward.” The Broncos have headed forward with Lynn in charge and, in less than a week, they will take the field for the first time under “Red,” as he’s known around the grounds of the Institute. “Our expectations should be, I think, to have a winning record and push to try to get a bowl game,” Lynn said about the upcoming season. “I’ve been here for seven years now, so our expectations should continue to be the top in our conference, if not win the conference and just kind of keep going with the program we’ve established here.” Lynn’s ability to meet those expectations should be helped by the return of four big-time playmakers — David Vega, Xan Mangum, E.J. Perkins-Loving, who L ynn said “got stronger and maintained speed,” and Sonny Duran. Vega broke nearly every passing record at NMMI last fall and his favorite target was Mangum, who led the country in receiving yards and was second in catches. “It’s vital. It’s a huge part,” L ynn said about how important it was having Vega back for another season.

New Mexico Military Institute’s Xan Mangum, left, throws a block for teammate Sonny Duran, center, during the Broncos’ 2010 opener. Mangum and Duran both return to lead the 2011 version of the Broncos under first-year head coach Josh Lynn.

“One thing with David is that we were able to work with him all summer, so he’s just gotten better and better. “The leadership and competitiveness that David has put forth last year and continuing into this year, there’s not a better situation for New Mexico Military Institute than David Vega.”

Mangum sustained a knee injury during the spring and will miss the start of the season, but L ynn still thinks the South Carolina-product will be just as good this year as last year, if not better. See BRONCOS, Page 15

“Xan will be as good, or better, depending on how fast we can get Xan back,” he said. “He’s worked hard. He ran routes today and looked pretty good, so it’s all depending on how Xan’s recovery comes along. “It will sure be nice when we’re able to get him out there.” With the retur n of those two, the return of Perkins-Loving and Duran and the return of three starting offensive

linemen — Winston Hunt, Kenny Eagle and Daniel Glauser — Lynn thinks the offense could be pretty good this year. “If we can fill those holes (in the offensive line), we can be just as explosive, or more explosive, than we were last year.” Another thing that will aid L ynn in his transition into the headcoaching role is the return of assistant head coach and defensive coordinator Joe Fortchner, who himself was a candidate for the head-

coaching position. “Joe was with us last year, so we’re going to run basically the same defense, but he’s tweaked it a little bit,” Lynn said about Fortchner. “One thing about Joe is that the kids love coach Fortchner and they will run through a wall for coach Fortchner.” With most coaches, it’s all about getting better every day — and Lynn is no exception to that mantra. “Let me just first say that we are nowhere
