“It is hard to replace that experience. A lot of those guys were three-year starters with us. How do you replace experience? It is pretty hard to do. HENDERSON ON THE EXCITEMENT LEVEL...
“I think every fall there is an excitement. We tend to graduate quite a few every year, but, really, every year is a completely different group and chemistry. It is fun to see how far along they come and how quickly they come. Of course, at this point of the season, there are a lot of question marks and that kind of makes it more exciting.”
HENDERSON ON THE BULLDOG BOWL...
“I know people don’t like my answer to this one, but I don’t ever talk about (home-field advantage). I feel like if you talk about home-field advantage, there must be a disadvantage when you are on the road. I think, with the players, it is a mindset. There are

We work real hard at looking at the positives and there are a lot of positives when we are at home. But, we try to find those positives when we are on the road as well.”
HENDERSON ON IMPROVING...
“I think one of the areas where we are pleased is our movement is getting better. You come in and you want that tempo to be fast and it is getting better. We aren’t where we want to be of course, but we have seen that get better. I felt like we made the transition from shorts to pads pretty well and that our athletes were in pretty good shape.”

FORCHTNER ON THE EXPECTATIONS...
“I guess my expectations are just to execute well. We have a pretty young group, so I just want to go in there and execute and play the best we can. Our expectations are pretty high after last year, so we’re going to do our best to live up those expectations.”
FORCHTNER ON REPLACING DAVID VEGA...
those guys is a lot harder than replacing other people. The biggest thing is getting those guys to work together as a unit. We’ve got some good sophomores, led by Ma’anaima Lang, the center. He played quite a bit last year. Those guys last year played quite a bit as freshmen too, so, as sophomores, they were a pretty cohesive unit. Now, it’s just developing that with guys who didn’t get a whole lot of playing time last year.”
“I think we’ve got three pretty good ones, but I don’t know if you replace a guy like David. You’re not FORCHTNER ON BEING THE HEAD COACH... going to get a guy exactly like that. But we can get a “I think it’s going to be good. I’m not nervous about guy with different qualities and still be effective.” it, I’m just anxious. I know we’re capable of some good things and I just want to see it. I just want to FORCHTNER ON THE OFFENSIVE LINE... see us execute and live up to what we all think we “We had three Division I linemen and replacing can be this year.”
Calling the signals... BEN PEDRO-LANGFORD
“I just want to win. Just win. The main goal for me is just to get to a bowl game.”

Let the Bob Davie era in Albuquerque begin. The former Notre Dame mentor begins his first season at the helm of the University of New Mexico football program on Sept. 1 with a home game against Southern at University Stadium. The Lobos return eight offensive starters and five defensive starters from last year’s squad that went 1-11 under embattled head coach Mike Locksley. The biggest of those returnees is senior quarterback B.R. Holbrook. The 6-foot-3, 196-pounder from Stevenson Ranch, Calif., played in 11 games in 2011, starting the final eight. He threw for 1,490 yards and four touchdowns while completing 59.7 percent of his passes. He will have plenty of weapons this year in

the modified pistol offense he’ll captain under first-year offensive coordinator Bob DeBesse. Ty Kirk and Lamaar Thomas, who combined for 532 receiving yards last season, return to anchor the receiving corps. Tight end Lucas Reed is also back. The Lobos also return junior running back Kasey Carrier, who will share the backfield with redshirt freshman Jhurrell Presley. Goddard alumnus David Anaya, a walk-on freshman, should also see time in the Lobo backfield after an outstanding prep career that saw him move to No. 2 on the state’s list of all-time leading rushers. Offensive line might well be New Mexico’s biggest strength in 2012. The Lobos return five big uglies who saw significant time in the trenches in 2011 — senior Korian Chambers, juniors Dillon

On the other side of the ball, the Lobos move to Davie’s trademark 3-4 that made Notre Dame one of the best defenses in the nation under his watch. Senior nose tackle Reggie Ellis highlights the list of returnees on the defensive side. Also back are linebackers Joseph Harris and Artesia alumnus Dallas Bollema, and secondary starters Destry Berry and Dante Caro. LOCAL FLAVOR: Five area players are on the 2012 Lobo roster — Artesia’s Dallas Bollema, Goddard’s David Anaya and David Vega, and Roswell’s Andrew Aho and George Aho.

If the Aggies are going to climb out of the WAC cellar, this is the season to do it. With a host of key contributors returning from last year’s 4-9 squad, New Mexico State appears poised to be ready to contend in a realigned WAC that lost its three best programs and added a pair of FCS programs. The success of the Aggies in 2012 will hinge, in large part, on the success of quarterback Andrew Manley. The redshirt sophomore started the first three games of 2011 before suffering a seasonending injury. In those three games, Manley threw for 892 yards and six touchdowns. His main targets in 2012 will be senior Kemonte’ Bateman and sophomore Austin Franklin, who both recorded at least 26 catches, 360 yards and three touchdowns last season. Newcomers Jerrel Brown and Joseph

Matthews add depth to the receiving corps. Senior returnee Robert Clay and junior newcomer Tiger Powell highlight the Aggie backfield. Up front, the Aggies return three players who saw starting time in 2011. Bookend left tackle Davonte Wallace headlines that group, along with Andrew Kersten and Valerian Ume-Ezeoke. Redshirt freshman Andy Cunningham has worked his way into a possible starting role in the trenches. The defense will be the biggest question mark in 2012. The Aggies lost their entire starting secondary, but do return a host of defensive linemen and linebackers. Donte Savage, who was academically ineligible in 2011, is back to fill a starting sport up front, along with Walton Taumoepeau, Alexander LaVoy and Mark Brown. The

— AFC REPORT CARDS: PREVIEWING THE 2012 SEASON — 2012 ROSWELL DAILY RECORD FOOTBALL PREVIEW
PAGE 22
AFC EAST —————————
1.) New England
Offense — Much like it has for the better part of a decade, the offense begins and ends with No. 12. If Brady stays healthy and upright he will keep the high-powered Patriot offense producing at a high level. Defense — In 2011, New England won 13 games despite a defense that ranked 31st in the NFL in total defense. They won’t be that bad again. Overall — As long as Bill Belichick and Tom Brady are in New England, the Patriots will be legitimate Super Bowl contenders. If the defensive additions can produce and make the unit into a middle-of-the-road defense, New England will once again threaten the 1972 Dolphins’ undefeated season.
——— GRADE: A+ ———
2.) Buffalo Bills
Offense — At times, Buffalo’s offense can be explosive as evidenced in its 5-2 start in which it averaged more than 30 points a game. On the other side of the coin, the Bills can have a few clunkers in a row (17.8 ppg the final nine games of the season). If Buffalo can play consistent offense for an entire season, good things will finally be on their way to Western New York. Defense — General manager Buddy Nix and coach Chan Gailey realized Buffalo wasn’t going to make any significant strides in 2012 without getting help on defense. Enter Mario Williams. Williams and Mark Anderson will
provide the Bills with a pass rush they desperately need. Overall — Buffalo’s defense will be better in 2012 and will take some pressure off of Fitzpatrick. If the Harvard product can trim down on the interceptions and become a more accurate passer, Buffalo’s playoff drought should come to an end in 2012.
——— GRADE: B ———
3.) Miami Dolphins
Offense — After two impressive preseason games, Joe Philbin tabbed first-round pick Ryan Tannehill as his starting quarterback. It was the correct short- and longterm move by the Dolphins’ new coach. Defense — Gone is defensive coordinator Mike Nolan and in his place is Kevin Koyle. Koyle has an extremely talented front seven to work with, but questions remain in the secondary. Overall — New coach Joe Philbin built his pedigree as an offensive mastermind with the Packers and, while the offense in South Beach isn’t nearly as potent as the one in Green Bay, Philbin is smart enough to tailor his scheme for the players he has. Miami should be a run-heavy team that doesn’t ask Tannehill to do too much. 8-8 seems about right for the Dolphins.
——— GRADE: C+ ———
4.) New York Jets
Offense — This could get real ugly, real fast for New York or it could turn out to be the key to another deep playoff run for Rex R yan’s troops. It’s a good thing Gang Green is returning to a run-
first offense because both incumbent quarterback Mark Sanchez and newcomer Tim Tebow have trouble hitting their targets. Defense — The strength of the Jets in the Rex Ryan era has been the defense. One of the weak points for the Jets in 2011 was their ability to get after the quarterback without blitzing. R yan feels that first-round pick Quinton Coples will help remedy the Jets’ pass-rushing woes. Overall — While the potential is there for the Jets to make a deep playof f run, there are just too many question marks. Regardless of who starts at quarterback, the pop-gun Jets’ offense scares no one.
——— GRADE: C ———
AFC NORTH —————————
1.) Baltimore
Offense — While most offenses go as their QB goes, the Ravens go as Ray Rice goes. In Baltimore’s four non-playoff losses last season, Rice averaged nine carries per game, while in the Ravens’ 12 wins, he averaged 21 carries. Baltimore is at its best when Rice is getting the ball consistently. Defense — Terrell Suggs suffered an Achilles injury in April and could miss the entire season. Suggs is the Ravens’ best pass rusher and he will be missed. In his absence, Paul Kruger and rookie Courtney Upshaw will have to collapse the pocket. Overall — Baltimore was a dropped Lee Evans pass away from the Super Bowl in 2011 and, even with the loss of Suggs, expectations are as high as ever. If the Ravens ride Rice, and Upshaw and
AUGUST 26, 2012
Kruger can produce a pass rush, the Ravens will be firmly in the title mix again in 2012.
——— GRADE: A- ———
2.) Cincinnati
Of fense — In 2011, rookies Andy Dalton (3,398 passing yards and 20 TDs) and A.J. Green (65 catches for 1,057 yards and seven TDs) played beyond their years and will only improve in 2012. To take the next step offensively, the Bengals need a WR to step up and force teams to single up Green. Defense — Dalton and Green got the headlines in 2011, but a rejuvenated defense played a major role in the Bengals’ playoff berth. Cincinnati allowed just 20.2 ppg (ninth in the NFL) and collected 45 sacks. In 2012, the defense could be even better with the addition of rookie CB Dre Kirkpatrick, and veterans Jason Allen, Terence Newman and Jamaal Anderson. Overall — The Bengals have an impressive blend of young talent and veterans and will make the playoffs for the second consecutive season in 2012.
——— GRADE: B+ ———
3.) Pittsburgh
Offense — Even more of the of fensive load will have to be shouldered by Ben Roethlisberger in 2012 because of the late-season tor n ACL suf fered by Rashard Mendenhall. Mendenhall’s return date is up in the air and that will force the Steelers to pass even more, which could spell trouble for Big Ben considering the offensive line is by far the weakest link of the team.
1113 N. MAIN ST 575-622-2465
BY LAWRENCE FOSTER RECORD ASST. SPORTS EDITOR
Defense — Pittsburgh’s vaunted defense had just 15 takeaways and 35 sacks in 2011, but still managed to allow just 14.2 ppg (first). As long as the back end of Pittsburgh’s defense stays healthy, it will remain a stout unit. Overall — Pittsburgh’s defense will have to pick up the slack for an offense that could be forced to play without Roethlisberger a few games unless the offensive line significantly steps up its game. The Steelers will fall short of the playoffs in 2012.
——— GRADE: B- ———
4.) Cleveland
Offense — The going could be rough early in 2012 as Cleveland’s young skill-position players get used to the NFL game. Rookie QB Brandon Weeden will start from the get-go, but with T rent Richardson missing a majority of training camp and the preseason, he will most likely be eased back into action. Look out for rookie WR Josh Gordon. Defense — This is one of the most underrated units in the league. Despite an offense that averaged just 13.6 ppg, the Browns’ defense didn’t let that affect their play as they allowed 19.2 ppg (fifth). Overall — Once the young offense gets acclimated to the NFL game, Cleveland should be a tough out for anyone late in the season. Next year looks promising for the Browns.

AFC SOUTH —————————
1.) Houston
Of fense — Even with Matt Schaub missing the final six regular season games, Houston earned its first playoff berth and collected its first playoff win. That is in large part because of the twoheaded monster of Arian Foster and Ben Tate. The two combined for nearly 2,200 rushing yards and 14 TDs in 2011. With a healthy Schaub and Andre Johnson, the Texans offense will be scary good in 2012. Defense — Even with a transition to a 3-4 defense, Houston ranked No. 2 in total defense last season thanks in large part to Wade Phillips. The emergence of Brooks Reed and J.J. Watt allowed the Texans to let former No. 1 pick Mario Williams leave via free agency. The addition of Whitney Mercilus, Alan Ball and Bradie James provides depth. Overall — Houston is poised to own the AFC South much like the Colts used to with Peyton Manning. The Texans have arguably the most well-rounded team in the league.
——— GRADE: A ———
2.) Tennessee
Offense — Coach Mike Munchak recently named Jake Locker his starting QB heading into the 2012 season and the fate of the Titans rests in his hands. With weapons like Kenny Britt (assuming he’s healthy), Kendall Wright and Nate Washington, Locker’s transition to starter should be easier. Defense — The Titans missed
out on Mario Williams, but got a good consolation prize in Kamerion Wimbley. The big question for this unit is if third-year corner Alterraun Verner can replace Cortland Finnegan. Overall — The Titans are the best of the “other three” teams of the AFC South, but won’t challenge for the playoffs in 2012. This year will be all about watching Locker grow as a signal caller.
——— GRADE: C+ ———
3.) Jacksonville
Offense — After a rookie season in which he looked completely lost and out of his league, QB Blaine Gabbert has looked like a completely different player so far in the preseason. The challenge will be to carry that momentum into the regular season, potentially without holdout Maurice JonesDrew. Rookie WR Justin Blackmon has also impressed through the first half of the preseason. Defense — The Jaguars improved from 28th in total defense in 2010 to No. 6 in 2011. With the addition of Aaron Ross (formerly of the Giants) and rookie Andre Branch, don’t expect a drop of f in defensive production in 2012. Overall — If Gabbert can continue on his improvement from the preseason and MJD’s holdout doesn’t last into the regular season, the Jaguars could be in the wild-card mix.
——— GRADE: C ———
4.) Indianapolis
Offense — It will be an up and down offensive year for the Colts as No. 1 pick Andrew Luck goes
BEST OF LUCK TO ALL OUR AREA TEAMS!
1315 N. Main St. 575-627-1100
through his growing pains in the NFL. The big thing for the Colts is to keep him healthy, which will be a chore with a weak offensive line. Defense — The Colts’ defense will also have a see-saw type 2012 with the transition to a 3-4 defense. Robert Mathis and Dwight Freeney, who have played DE their entire NFL careers, will struggle with the move to outside linebackers in the new scheme. Overall — With all of the new pieces on of fense and a new scheme on defense, 2012 could be an ugly season for Colts fans. As opposed to looking at wins, indianapolis fans should be looking for improvements on both sides of the ball from week to week.
——— GRADE: C- ———
AFC WEST
—————————
1.) Kansas City
Offense — It really can’t get worse for the Chief offense in 2012 considering that they averaged a paltry 13.2 ppg in 2011. With the return to health of Jamaal Charles and Tony Moeaki, and the additions of Peyton Hillis, Kevin Boss and Winston Justice, points will come much easier for the 2012 Chiefs. Defense — Defense will be the calling card of Kansas City in 2012. Even with the departure of corner Brandon Carr, the Chiefs will build on the late season success of 2011 when they allowed less than 17 points in five of their final six games. Overall — With the addition of Peyton Manning to the Broncos, Kansas City has understandably been flying under the radar dur-
ing the offseason. The Chiefs will ride an improved offense and a top-10 defense to its second AFC West championship in three seasons.
——— GRADE: A- ———
2.) Denver Broncos
Offense — The Broncos’ season rests in the capable, but rusty, hands of Peyton Manning. There is going to be some rust even for a player as great as Manning, but with a strong rushing attack and capable playmakers outside, he won’t have to shoulder the load. Defense — While Tebow stole headlines last season for lategame heroics, it was the defense that kept games close until Tebow magic kicked in. Elvis Dumervill and Von Miller will cause havoc on passing downs and a re-tooled defensive line will help solidify the run defense. Overall — I wouldn’t be surprised if Denver wins the division because you can never be surprised by Manning. Manning will be back to himself by the end of the season, but as he regains his form early in the season, Denver will dig itself too big of a hole to chase down Kansas City.
——— GRADE: B ———
3.) San Diego
Offense — The Chargers still have Phillip Rivers, but lost Vincent Jackson to free agency. Antonio Gates appears to be fully recovered from a toe injury that nagged him throughout 2011, but even with those weapons, the success of the offense will be determined by whether someone can step up and be a No. 1 WR. And if
AUGUST 26, 2012
BY LAWRENCE FOSTER RECORD ASST. SPORTS EDITOR
R yan Mathews can carry a full workload for 16 games. Defense — Safety Eric Weddle is arguably the best safety in the league and is the leader of the Charger defense. San Diego also fields one of the best linebacking corps in the league with standouts Takeo Spikes and Shaun Phillips being joined by first-round pick Melvin Ingram. Overall — San Diego has all the talent in the world, but that has been the case for quite some time. The problem is getting said talent to come together for a full season. Another 8-8 finish seems likely for the inconsistent Chargers.
——— GRADE: B- ———
4.) Oakland
Offense — As Darren McFadden goes, so go the Raiders. The talented back is one of the best in the league, but cannot stay healthy. A healthy McFadden makes the entire offense better and will help take the pressure off of Carson Palmer. Defense — Oakland has one of the best defensive lines in the league and the unit will have to play to its potential for the defense to be a force. The second level as a whole is an underachieving group even with stellar line play. Overall — Counting on McFadden to stay healthy is risky at best, but the Raiders appear to be all-in on that bet. When McFadden does go down, Palmer will once again become a tur nover machine.

— NFC REPORT CARDS: PREVIEWING THE 2012 SEASON — 2012 ROSWELL DAILY RECORD FOOTBALL PREVIEW
PAGE 28
NFC EAST —————————
1.) Philadelphia
Offense — The Eagles boast one of the most explosive offenses in the league, but for it to become more consistent, Michael Vick has to do a better job of taking care of the ball. LeSean McCoy is arguably the best RB in the league and DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, Jason Avont and Brent Celek provide Vick plenty of weapons in the passing game. Defense — This should be a much-improved unit in 2012. Defensive coordinator Juan Castillo will use more man coverage, which plays to the strengths of Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique RodgersCromartie. The run defense should also improve with the addition of MLB DeMeco Ryans. Overall — The Eagles floundered last season under the pressure of being the “Dream Team.” In 2012, they will live up to that name and be a legitimate threat to win the franchise’s first Super Bowl.
——— GRADE: A ———
2.) New York
Offense — The Giants will go only as far as their QB can take them. Eli Manning will once again be blessed with numerous weapons (Victor Cruz, Hakeem Nicks and Domenik Hixon) and a running game that features Ahmad Bradshaw and first-round pick David Wilson. Defense — The Giants have the best defensive line in the NFL on paper and on the field. New York will need to continue to excel up front on defense to make up for a weak linebacking unit that added former
first-round pick Keith Rivers. Second-year CB Prince Amukamara needs to bounce back from an injury-plagued rookie campaign. Overall — The champion Giants finished 9-7 last year and, if they want to host more than one playoff game this year, they need to avoid the clunkers that forced them to take the long road to the Lombardi Trophy last year.
——— GRADE: B+ ———
3.) Dallas
Offense — The spotlight will always be on Tony Romo, but if the Cowboys are to make a serious run at their sixth title, the offensive line and running game are going to have to step up. DeMarco Murray had a breakout season in 2011, but ended the season on IR. Injuries at WR this preseason are a bit worrisome. Defense — The Cowboys spent big this offseason to improve their defense. First, Dallas spent big to sign Brandon Carr and Dan Connor, then they drafted the toprated CB in the draft, Morris Claiborne. With the defensive additions and another stellar season from DeMarcus Ware and Sean Lee, Dallas’ defense should be much improved. Overall — On talent alone, Dallas has one of the best teams in the league, but talent alone doesn’t win games. The Cowboys have been too inconsistent and will struggle with that again this year.

4.) Washington
Offense — Washington is all-in with Robert Griffin III. The Redskins gave up everything but the kitchen sink to draft the Heisman-

winning QB and the pressure is on the Baylor product. Washington did spend money in free agency to provide RG3 with weapons, but expect growing pains for the multi-dimensional signal caller. Defense — The Redskins’ strength is in its front seven. The ageless London Fletcher continues to produce on the field and be the leader of the team off it. Washington would like Brian Orakpo to become more consistent in his third season. Overall — The Redskin offense will have its peaks and valleys as RG3 learns on the fly. Unlike the Colts, however, Washington can lean on a solid defense and flirt with .500.

—————————
1.) Green Bay
Offense — It will be hard for Green Bay to match its 2011 output in which it averaged 35 points a game, but, with the addition of RB Cedric Benson to pair with James Starks, the Packers should be a more balanced team. Aaron Rodgers will once again flirt with Tom Brady’s single-season TD mark. Defense — The Packers have to improve a defense that allowed a league-worst 411 yards a game in 2011. General Manager Ted Thompson obviously believed defensive improvement was a priority this offseason as evidenced by the addition of free agents Anthony Hargrove and Phillip Merling and the draft selections of Nick Perry, Jerel Worthy and Casey Hayward. Overall — With a more bal-
anced offense and a defense that has nowhere to go but up, Green Bay is a legitimate threat to capture its second Super Bowl title in three years.
——— GRADE: A ———
2.) Chicago
Offense — Jay Cutler will have a new, but familiar toy to play with in 2011 — Brandon Marshall. With a happy (read as paid) Matt Forte and a backup QB in place that can win games (Jason Campbell), Chicago’s offense is built to win now. Defense — The Bears hope that first-round pick Shea McClellin will step up and take advantage of the one-on-one opportunities provided to the end who plays opposite of Julius Peppers. The health of Brian Urlacher, who had microscopic knee surgery earlier in August, will be worth keeping track of. The Bears’ defense is a different beast without its leader. Overall — The addition of the troubled Marshall proved that Chicago is in a win-now-and-at-anycost mindset. Even if a shaky offensive line gets Cutler injured, the Bears are prepared this time around with Campbell. All of the pieces are in place for Chicago to make another run at the Super Bowl.
——— GRADE: B+ ———
3.) Detroit
Of fense — This is one of the most unbalanced teams in the league. When it comes to passing, it doesn’t get much better than watching Mathew Stafford hook up with Calvin Johnson. But with the continued concussion issues with Jahvid Best, Mikel Leshoure has to keep his head on straight to provide an impact. If Detroit wants to

BY LAWRENCE FOSTER RECORD ASST. SPORTS EDITOR
improve on its playoff berth, it needs to find a better offensive balance. Defense — Ndamukong Suh didn’t come close to having the impact he did as a rookie and is one on-field blowup away from a lengthy suspension. The defensive line as a whole is the strength of the defense, but has to do a better job against the run. The secondary will continue to be a problem area for the Lions in 2012. Overall — The Lions broke through last season with a 10-6 record and playoff berth, but are still the third-best team in the division thanks to questions at running back and a porous secondary.
——— GRADE: B ———
4.) Minnesota
Offense — The big question for the Vikings is whether Adrian Peterson will be the back he was before his knee injury in 2011. Even if he takes time to regain his form, Minnesota has Toby Gerhart, who proved he can carry the load if Peterson is forced to miss time. Christian Ponder needs to take a step forward entering his second season. Defense — Outside of Jared Allen and rookie safety Harrison Smith, the Vikings defense is mediocre at best. Considering the three other offenses in the division, the Vikings’ defense will be in for a long season in 2012. Overall — Minnesota will be in the running for the No. 1 pick in the 2013 draft even if Peterson retur ns to for m and Ponder improves. The defense is that bad.

— NFC REPORT CARDS: PREVIEWING THE 2012 SEASON —
AUGUST 26, 2012
NFC SOUTH —————————
1.) New Orleans
Of fense — For almost any other team, losing offensive guru Sean Payton for an entire season would be disastrous. Luckily for the Saints, they have a happy and paid Drew Brees. As long as Brees is taking snaps, the Saints’ high-powered offense won’t miss a beat. Defense — While all of the attention was focused on the punishment handed down after Bountygate, New Orleans made two of the best and underrated moves of the offseason. The Saints hired defensive whiz Steve Spagnuolo and signed free agent linebacker Curtis Lofton, which will help solidify a leaky defense. Overall — When Bill Belichick and the Patriots were punished for Spygate, the Patriots took out their anger on the rest of the league. Expect the same from the Saints. Drew Brees and the other leaders of New Orleans will turn the Bountygate negative into another run at the Lombardi Trophy.
——— GRADE: A ———
2.) Atlanta
Offense — Matt R yan has no excuses this year. With weapons like Roddy White, Julio Jones and Tony Gonzalez to go along with a running game led by Michael Turner, Ryan has to take the step from good to great in 2012. Defense — If Atlanta is going to improve on this side of the ball, it will have to do so with largely the same cast as last year. The Falcons traded for Asante Samuel,
2012 ROSWELL DAILY RECORD FOOTBALL PREVIEW
which gives them the best set of corners in football. With the freeagent loss of Curtis Lofton and the season-ending injury to Lofa Tatupu, there is a gaping hole at linebacker. Overall — A playoff berth no longer is enough for the Falcons or their fans. Matt Ryan and coach Mike Smith are winless in the playoffs and, if a playoff win or two doesn’t come in 2012, it may be time for a change at the top for Atlanta.
——— GRADE: B+ ———
3.) Carolina
Offense — Cam Newton defied all expectations in 2011, throwing for more than 4,000 yards, while rushing for 706 yards and 14 TDs. Don’t expect a letup this season. After a full offseason and a year of experience, Newton will be even more dangerous with his arm, which will open up even bigger holes for him to run through. Defense — For Carolina to reach the playoffs, the Panthers’ defensive line and secondary will have to improve. Rookie linebacker Luke Kuechly has impressed thus far in the preseason and, if Thomas Davis and Jon Beason can stay healthy, Carolina will have the best linebacking unit east of San Francisco. Overall — Newton’s improvement in the passing game and a potent running game featuring Jonathan Stewart, DeAngelo Williams and Mike Tolbert will keep the Panther offense humming. If the defense improves, Carolina will be in the wild-card race until the last week.
——— GRADE: B ———
4.) Tampa Bay
Offense — Which Josh Freeman will Tampa Bay get? The 2010 version that led the Buccaneers to a surprising 10-6 season, or the 2011 one that tanked and finished with just four wins? With the additions of Vincent Jackson and Carl Nicks, Tampa Bay clearly believes he is the former. Defense — For a unit that boasts talented players like Aqib Talib, Ronde Barber, Gerald McCoy and Mason Foster, Tampa Bay’s defense underachieved in 2011. Rookies Mark Barron and Lavonte David and free-agent signee Eric Wright should help improve a mediocre unit. Overall — Tampa Bay will be a better team in 2011, but, in the best division in football, that may not reflect in its record.
——— GRADE: C+ ———
NFC WEST
—————————
1.) San Francisco
Offense — For San Francisco to take the next step to the Super Bowl, Alex Smith will have to become a more dangerous passer. The 49ers made sure he will have the weapons to do just that after adding Randy Moss, Mario Manningham and r ookie A.J. Jenkins. Defense — Hands down the best overall defense in the league. The 49ers have a stout defensive line led by Justin Smith and Isaac Sopoaga, the best linebackers in the league (Patrick Willis, NaVorro Bowman, Aldon Smith and Ahmad Brooks) and a secondary that features Carlos Rogers. Overall — From top to bottom,
the 49ers have the best team in the league and are the favorites to win the Super Bowl. With the added weapons on offense, San Francisco will be more potent. Couple a dangerous offense with the best defense in the league and San Francisco will be sitting p r et t y co me t h e b e g in ni n g of February.
——— GRADE: A+ ———
2.) Seattle
Offense — As of press time, Pete Carroll had not decided on a starting quarterback, but the favorite appears to be free-agent pickup Matt Flynn. Regardless of who starts under center, the Seahawks will need to lean heavily on Marshawn Lynch to have a chance at a wild-card spot. Defense — Seattle’s defense has the potential to be a top-10 unit and the strength of the unit is at safety. Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor provide the Seahawks with arguably the best safety tandem in the league. Overall — Seattle will challenge for a wild card so long as Marshawn Lynch stays healthy and a weak offensive line keeps Flynn or Russell Wilson upright. A strong defense will keep Seattle in a lot of games.
——— GRADE: B ———
3.) St. Louis
Offense — St. Louis’ offense was pathetic in 2011, but early signs are that the Rams will be more respectable in 2012. Sam Bradfor d is healthy after an injury-plagued 2011 and, with the return of Danny Amendola and the additions of Steve Smith and Brian Quick, Bradfor d
PAGE 29
BY LAWRENCE FOSTER RECORD ASST. SPORTS EDITOR
shouldn’t have to deal with the dropsies that plagued the team in 2011. Defense — Although the stats from last season don’t show it, St. Louis has the makings of a topflight defense. Mainstays James Laurinaitis and Chris Long will benefit from the additions of rookies Michael Brockers, Janoris Jenkins and veteran CB Cortland Finnegan. Overall — A significant improvement is in store for the Rams in 2012. While that won’t translate into a winning season, six or seven wins is a step in the right direction for a team that won just two games in 2011.
——— GRADE: B ———
4.) Arizona
Offense — Poor Larry Fitzgerald. Regardless of who wins the QB battle between Kevin Kolb and John Skelton, the Cardinals will have one of the worst offenses in the league. Factor in the seasonending injury to Levi Brown and futility will be the description of the 2012 Arizona offense. Defense — This unit is the biggest reason Arizona finished the 2011 season on a 7-2 tear. Patrick Peterson made his mark as a return man last season, but will need to improve as a corner. Safety Adrian Wilson is the best kept secret in the NFL. Overall — The Cardinals won’t be able to overcome their offensive deficiencies and will suffer through a three- or four-win season.
