Jeff Lynnʼs first season at the helm should be interesting. The Coyotes have just five total starters back from a team that qualified for the playoffs with a 5-5 record. Lynn will be filling holes from the get-go, especially on the offensive side — only one lineman returns and Joseph Lovato, who is slated to play quarterback, was a wide receiver a year ago. Lynnʼs system can work at the prep level and will confuse defenses on a weekly basis. If the young players develop quickly, Roswell has a chance to extend its playoff streak to four straight seasons. The Coyotes will be at a size disadvantage in nearly every game, though, so conditioning will play a vital role in whether the Coyotes can contend near the end of the year.

“(The kids have) worked hard and they’ve done everything I’ve asked them to do. On that end of it, I couldn’t be more happy. They’ve bought in to what we’re trying to do. They’ve done a good job.”

• The first game of the season will set the tone for Roswell under first-year coach Jeff Lynn. Getting off to a quick start would instill some confidence in the Coyotes, something theyʼve been lacking in previous seasons. Plus, starting a season 1-0 is a whole lot better than starting 0-1.

Earwood is the vocal leader of Roswell in 2013. He started in 2012 and will be a starter at outside linebacker in 2013. Heʼs got good size, heʼs smart and he knows how to get to the football. Heʼs a good tackler and should rank among the team leaders in tackles this year.

JOSIAH EARWOOD

Jessup will anchor both the offensive and defensive lines for the Coyotes in 2013. Heʼs a quiet leader, but he understands how to motivate his teammates. He makes the players around him better, something that will be key to Roswellʼs success in Jeff Lynnʼs first season.

JUSTIN JESSUP

Lovato was in the mix to be the starter at QB last year, but ended up becoming the teamʼs top target in the passing game. He will likely be back under center to start the year, but could end up back at receiver before itʼs all said and done. Heʼs a good athlete with good size and speed.

“There are going to be some people who think we’ll be better than last year, and a lot of people don’t think we’re going to be as good as we were last year. This is the same song and dance that I tell you every year — this team has to find its own personality.” The Rockets finally finished off an undefeated season last year, winning the Class 4A title on a last-second Kelsey Cunningham field goal. The expectation within the Goddard camp is to repeat the feat. With leading rusher Cody French and breakout star Dean McDaniel both returning, the Rockets seem poised to make another deep playoff run. French will move to quarterback and McDaniel will fill his shoes at tailback. Cameron Neff should be in the mix to see time in the backfield at either QB or RB as well. The Rockets got bigger on the offensive line despite losing nearly every starter up front. Goddard hasnʼt lost a regular season game since losing to Clovis in Week 6 of the 2009 season, a streak of 33 straight games.

• Youʼll find out just how good the 2013 Rockets are when they host Rio Rancho at the Wool Bowl. The Rams are expected to contend for the Class 5A state title this year after locking up the No. 1 seed in the playoffs a season ago. Goddard is a perfect 5-0 all-time against Rio Rancho, but each of the past two meetings has been decided by eight points or less.

French is arguably the best football player in the county and should be the frontrunner to become the fourth Daily Record Gridiron King. He is moving back to QB this year after starting as a tailback last year. He will see time at tailback, though. Heʼs fast and explodes through holes.

CODY FRENCH

HEAD COACH

Griffin was a young buck on a senior-laden line last year, but heʼs the lead dog this year. Heʼll be tasked with mentoring the rest of a very young, but very good, offensive line. Heʼs not afraid to get loud and heʼs as intense as they come. Heʼs a leader on and off the field for the Rockets.

EATHYN GRIFFIN

McDaniel was a surprise star for Goddard a season ago and is ready to take over as the starter at tailback. He has big shoes to fill, but he has the talent and athletic ability to do it. If he gets the rep, he will be a 1,000yard rusher for Goddard. Heʼs smart and he takes care of the ball.

ON THE GOAL IN

Lara is the big boy up front. Heʼs the biggest of Artesiaʼs offensive linemen and heʼs the most experienced. With a young corps, he will be looked to as a leader. He moves well and has good feet, two things that come in handy when youʼre blocking in Artesiaʼs pass-heavy scheme.

ZACH LARA

HEAD COACH

2013 ...

“Our goal will always be a state championship and some years are more challenging than others. We feel real good about our group. We know we are young and inexperienced. If we get better every week, we can be right in the mix.”

Oliver is one of only two returning linemen with any experience, so heʼll play a key role in developing the young bucks around him. Heʼs not a big kid, but heʼs got quick hands and feet. Artesia will rely on him to open up holes and give his quarterback time to survey the field.

MARCUS OLIVER

Artesia is one of those programs that never rebuilds, it just reloads; and this is a reloading year. With a litany of key guys gone from last yearʼs squad, Artesia has a number of holes to fill. The QB situation looked settled until Trevor Eulenbach moved to Texas, paving the way for junior Ben Kelley to take over the position. The question of who will fill holes at running back and wide receiver still lingers. Deion Wesson is the only skill guy returning who saw time last season, so he will play a big role in the offense. While this year DEION WESSON might be trying, the Bulldogs will be loaded going forward with just Wesson is the lone 11 seniors on this yearʼs roster. The Bulldogs have made the NMAA skill guy with experience on Friday nights. playoffs 12 straight times, last missing in 2000 after a 5-5 season.

OUTLOOK

• The Week 2 matchup with Hobbs is important because it represents Artesiaʼs first real threat of a loss. The Bulldogs should take care of Lovington pretty handily, but Hobbs is a much-improved program with a lot of quality athletes. Artesia will still be the favorite, but the Eagles could surprise the ʻDogs if they get some breaks.

ON THE EXPECTATIONS

...

“We will see all the best right off the bat and we will find out how good we will be then. I think our expectations are higher. We have had a little bit of success and the kids like it a lot better.” Itʼs not an exaggeration to say that Dexter plays the single-most difficult schedule in all of Class 2A. With games against perennial powers Texico, Tularosa, Santa Rosa and Eunice dotting the schedule, getting to the playoffs with no injuries and a winning record is a tall task. The Demons have the talent to do it, though. The quarterback situation isnʼt settled just yet, but both Kyle Bonner and Dominic Lomeli are capable of being effective as the signal caller. A massively large offensive line will help Dexterʼs group of talented skill-position players create nightmares for opposing defenses. Donʼt be surprised if Dexter poses a serious threat to Santa Rosaʼs three-year reign atop the classification.

OUTLOOK

• Dexterʼs Week 4 matchup with the Rattlers is the last in a three-week road trip, but comes smack dab in the middle of a brutally difficult non-district schedule. A win against Tucumcari could catapult the Demons high into the state rankings just a week before a showdown with 3A Portales and two weeks before a battle with three-time defending 2A champion Santa Rosa.

Amaro is the vocal and emotional leader of a huge offensive line that will play a critical role in Dexterʼs success in 2013. The three-year starter will be tasked with making all of the offensive line calls and with helping bring along the young big uglies in the trenches.

JADEN AMARO

HEAD COACH

Perhaps the best athlete on the team, Bonner is a ballhawk in the defensive secondary and provides a spark as a receiver for the Demons. He led the team in interceptions last year and has the capability of turning the tide with just one play.

KEVIN BONNER

Bonner will be the starting quarterback in Week 1, but may not stay there through the season. Heʼs athletically gifted and has the capability of playing multiple positions on the offensive side of the ball. Defensively, he is Dexterʼs best cover guy in the secondary.

“We had a chance to make the playoffs even with the horrible start that we had. Hopefully we can just continue that. ... Our expectations are still the same — go out there and compete, and win as many games as you can.”

Moore will be the starting running back for the Colts this season. He has a quiet demeanor, but heʼs a good motivator when itʼs required. He will be the star of the offense until the rest of the Coltsʼ inexperienced offensive unit catches up. Heʼs got good speed and makes good cuts.

DOMINIC MOORE

Itʼs hard to predict anything when it comes to the New Mexico Military Institute Colts. They are weeks behind other programs, but Montoya is still excited about the possibilities with this yearʼs unit. They are inexperienced, so the first few weeks will feature some growing pains. The talent is there for the Colts this year. Dominic Moore is a good running back and provides plenty of pep in Randy Montoyaʼs offensive scheme. Blade Allen moves from QB to WR this year, giving the Colts a big target on the edge. The question mark is JERAMY PALMA at QB where sophomore Jose Lira will start. If Lira develops quickly, Palma is the class the Colts could be in the playoff mix by the end of the season. A 5-5 clown and keeps the team loose, but heʼs as campaign isnʼt out of the question for the Colts.

ON THE EXPECTATIONS

Field is the vocal and emotional leader of the Colts this season. He hit the lineup last season as a linebacker and hasnʼt left the spot since. Heʼs a good tackler, he sheds blockers well and heʼs good at pursuing the ball. He pushes his teammates and helps make them better.

ERIC FIELD

HEAD COACH

• The Week 3 matchup on the campus of the Institute could be huge for NMMI. The first two weeks will likely feature losses, but Week 3 could be the week for NMMIʼs first win. The Colts went toe-to-toe with the Bears for three quarters last season, so being in the hunt for a win this year is a realistic expectation.

“(It’s) pretty much the same expectations as last year — compete hard every game, get better every game and see if that doesn’t get us into the playoffs. If we get into the playoffs, (we’ll) try to get as deep as we can.”

Ramos will captain the offense at quarterback and will provide some athleticism in the secondary. Heʼs quick and accurate, and he gets the ball to his playmakers without wasting time in the pocket. He needs to eliminate mistakes and improve on his own playmaking abilities.

ALEJANDRO RAMOS

Hagerman is down 20 kids from last seasonʼs team, but Casey Crandall still has the Bobcats believing that a state championship is within reach. They were the favorites to win the state title last season before some unforeseen circumstances derailed their momentum before the first playoff game. This group of seniors is focused on winning the programʼs ninth state title and first since 2009. The biggest concern for Hagerman is avoiding injury. With only 16 kids on the varsity roster, staying healthy through a schedule JESSIE RODRIGUEZ chocked full of 2A opponents will be critical. If the Bobcats can get Rodriguez is the linchpin for Hagerman. to district play without any major injuries, they should be well Heʼs the Bobcatsʼ No. 1 positioned to win the district title and secure an opening-round bye.

Bejarano is lanky and strong, two important traits for a wide receiver and linebacker, the positions at which heʼll start this season. Heʼs an excellent complement to playmaker Jessie Rodriguez on the offensive side and is, according to Crandall, a “really good tackler” at middle linebacker.

JOSE BEJARANO

HEAD COACH

• The final District 2-1A game of the season will likely decide the champion of the district and, quite possibly, the No. 1 seed in the Class 1A playoffs. Hagerman laid the wood to the Foxes in Fort Sumner last season, so expect the boys in black to be seeking revenge this season.

“Once it has become the expectation, you have to find ways to push buttons and motivate them. Wins don’t come from what you do, they really come from who you are and that manifests on the field.”

Meeks was a breakout star last season and has only gotten better in the offseason. Heʼs arguably the best athlete in the entire classification, something that goes a long way in 8-man football. He added weight and muscle, and the year of experience will only serve to help him.

ANDREW MEEKS

Gateway Christianʼs unblemished run to a state title last season was a surprise to many after Mason Miller graduated, but the Warriors just reloaded and turned in the programʼs first undefeated season since 2006. They have some holes to fill this year, but the components are there to make another run at a state title. With Andrew Meeks running the show, Gateway is capable of winning every game. Jacob Moody and Caleb Raney provide playmaking abilities in the passing game. The Warriors thrived on defense a year JACOB MOODY ago, holding opponents to 14 points or less seven times in 11 Moody is smart and he knows the game. He games. Surviving a stretch of five roadies in the first six games will gets people in the right be critical to Gatewayʼs success in 2013.

The old saying that itʼs not about the size of the dog in the fight perfectly suits Bruns. The diminutive but scrappy defensive end led Gateway in sacks last year and will probably do the same this year. Heʼs instinctive and smart, a dangerous combination in someone with a motor that wonʼt quit.

• Melrose was rebuilding last season, but the Buffaloes are ready to get back to their winning ways this year. This Week 6 showdown between two power programs could be a preview of the state championship and could decide the No. 1 seed in the playoffs. The two teams have combined for five straight state titles (Gateway 2011, 2012; Melrose 2008, 2009, 2010).

“One of the philosophies we are preaching this year is (that) you have to have the end in sight. Especially this team here, it is senior-laden. ... I am really looking forward to their leadership. We will only go as far as they take us.” Anytime you can trot out one of the most prolific rushers in state history, youʼve got a chance to win. Thatʼs exactly what Lake Arthur does every week with Miguel Rubio. If Rubio stays healthy, the Panthers are the overwhelming favorites to win their third straight state championship. Cody Dalton staying healthy will also play a key role in the teamʼs success. Without Dalton, Lake Arthurʼs offense is very one-dimensional. The Panthers will lean on their five returning seniors as team leaders. The only three-peat winner of Class 6-Man is Mountainair, which won the crown in 1989, ʻ90 and ʻ91. The Panthers join Gateway Christian and Santa Rosa as the only teams in the state which can win at least a third straight title in 2013.

KEY LOSSES

ON WINNING IT ALL AGAIN

• In a rematch of last yearʼs state championship game, the Panthers travel to archrival Hondo Valley. Lake Arthur dominated the Eagles in the regular season, but Hondo made things interesting in the title game. With Clovis Christian out of the classification, itʼs a strong possibility that this game will be a preview of the 2013 title tilt.

Dalton has been on the field for Lake Arthur since his eighth-grade year, so heʼs about as experienced as you can be. Heʼs productive as the teamʼs QB, but his strong suit is on the defensive side. He loves contact and heʼs a ferocious hitter. Heʼs not afraid to lay the wood to an opposing player.

CODY DALTON

HEAD COACH

The center position is often overlooked, but it plays a huge role in the 6-man game. De La Cruz is consistent and trustworthy, which is why his coach leans on him to be a leader up front. Heʼs big and strong, two traits he uses well when opening holes for Lake Arthurʼs vaunted rushing attack.

FELIPE DE LA CRUZ

Rubio is the engine that makes Lake Arthur go. Heʼs quick, strong and he takes care of the football. He has great field vision and a unique ability to get into the open field. The Panthers will go as far as Rubio takes them and heʼs said multiple times that he wants to win three straight titles.

“(The kids) are looking forward to it, they are smiles and grins and are ready to get going. ... They have talked about it all summer and are ready to get back into it.” Hondo Valley shocked the state by upsetting No. 1 seed Dora in the state semifinals last season and is poised to make a run at the state title in 2013. The Eagles return their top two playmakers in Billy Candelaria and Roberto Nores. Nores is the biggest threat, though. He ran for nearly 1,100 yards last season and threw for almost 800 more. He will touch the ball on nearly every play and the offense will revolve around his ability to make plays. Candelaria combined for nearly 800 passing and rushing yards last season. Most of the players got a taste of championship glory when the Eagles won the Class B state hoops title in March, something coach Brandon Devine said is fueling the fire for his team this year.

KEY LOSSES

ON GETTING STARTED

• Itʼs a rematch of the 2012 title game, which Lake Arthur won 65-46. Itʼs the key game for Hondo Valley because Lake Arthur is the best of the best in the classification. Whoever wins the Week 4 showdown should be positioned to be the No. 1 seed and the championship favorite.

Candelaria is lanky, quick and smart. He gives coach Brandon Devine an extra coach on the field because he understands the game so well. Heʼs a playmaker with the ball and he knows how to get into the right positions without the ball. He will play a key role in Hondo Valleyʼs offense in 2013.

BILLY CANDELARIA

HEAD COACH

Lerma is a team leader and one of only two seniors on the squad. He makes the players around him better and he loves contact, something that has endeared him to his coach. He opens the holes for the Eaglesʼ playmakers.

LALO LERMA

Nores is Hondoʼs top option on the offensive side of the ball. He led the team in every major offensive category last season, a feat he will likely duplicate this season. Heʼs still a work-in-progress according to his coach, which should scare other teams considering his numbers last season.

2012 NMAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES Class 5A Las Cruces 35, Sandia 28 • At Albuquerque, Jonathan Joy had two rushing TDs and two passing TDs, and Las Cruces beat Sandia for its first state title since 2008. The Bulldawgs ran off the gameʼs first 21 points and led 2112 at halftime. To start the second half, Joy hit Sam Denmark for a 52-yard aerial strike, making it 2812. Cruces running back J.J. Granados then pounded his way into the end zone for his 34th TD of the year to make it 35-12. Sandia scored twice to get within 35-28 and had the ball inside the Bulldawg 20 before Denmark picked off a pass in the end zone to seal the win. It was Las Crucesʼ seventh state football title and the fifth under coach Jim Miller. Class 4A Goddard 17, Los Lunas 14 • At Los Lunas, Kelsey Cunningham kicked a 21-yard field goal as time expired to cap an undefeated season for Goddard, its first unblemished year in program history. Los Lunas led 14-7 in the final quarter before Goddard mounted a game-tying drive that was capped by a Cody French TD run. After Frenchʼs game-tying TD, Goddard took over with 4:36 left and pushed the ball to the Tiger 4 with a 14-play drive. Los Lunas coach Jeremy Newton tried to ice Cunningham with back-to-back

timeouts, but the junior kicker calmly split the uprights out of the hold of Mitch Weathers. It was Goddardʼs first title since 2009 and the sixth under longtime coach Sam Jernigan.

Class 3A St. Michael’s 10, Silver 7 • At Santa Fe, St. Michaelʼs rebounded from its 2011 titlegame loss to claim the 2012 crown with a win over Silver. The Horsemen scored the only points of the first half with a 49-yard field goal in the halfʼs final minute. Both of the gameʼs TDs came in the third quarter. Silver scored first on a Nevada Bencomo 26-yard run to go up 7-3, but the Horsemen answered quickly. Cory Serna hit Daniel Ortega for a 10-yard TD with 1:31 left to give the Horsemen the lead for good. Ortega picked off a Silver pass on the gameʼs penultimate play to seal the win for St. Michaelʼs. It was fourth title for St. Michaelʼs and the third for coach Joey Fernandez. Class 2A Santa Rosa 28, Tularosa 0 • At Santa Rosa, Santa Rosa won its third straight state championship by blanking Tularosa. Timm Valverde started the game with a 46-yard run and Marcus Lopez (161 yards) capped the opening drive with a TD, his first of three on the day, that gave Santa Rosa the

lead for good. Valverde, who had 193 yards rushing, finished off the second drive with a 1-yard run that made it 14-0. Tularosa managed just four first downs and was in the negative in total yards until their final drive. It was the eighth title for Santa Rosa and the third under coach Mario Trujillo. Class 1A Escalante 48, Capitan 30 • At Capitan, Escalante won its first title in its first championship game appearance with a comefrom-behind win over Capitan. The Lobos trailed 22-14 late in the first half when C.J. Deyapp blocked a Tiger punt deep in Tiger territory. Two plays later, Reynaldo Atencio scored on a 2-yard run to tie the game at 22 going to halftime. It was all Escalante after that. The Lobos scored on every possession in the second half, with Atencio scoring thrice on short runs. Cody Casados scored the Lobosʼ other second-half TD. It was the first title in program history and the first for coach Dusty Giles. Class 8-Man Gateway Christian 32, Tatum 26 • At Roswell, Gateway Christian stuffed Tatum on two plays inside the 10 and captured their second consecutive state championship. Tatum had control of the game in the early going, but two critical turnovers helped Gateway take

the lead just before halftime. The Warriors had the lead out to 14 before Tatum scored in the fourth to close within six. After a defensive stop on Gatewayʼs next possession, Tatum drove deep into Gateway territory. On first down from the Warrior 6, Gatewayʼs Andrew Meeks made a diving pass breakup. Gatewayʼs Scott Christianson and Kane Daniel sacked Seth Slover on the next play to set off the Warrior celebration. The title was the fifth for Gateway and the fourth under coach Shaun Wigley. Class 6-Man Lake Arthur 65, Hondo Valley 46 • At Hondo, Lake Arthur scored three times within the first three minutes of the game and never looked back in winning its second straight state championship, the first repeat since Royʼs double up in 1997-98. Miguel Rubio scored the first two of those three TDs en route to a 383-yard, eight-TD performance. The Panthers had the lead out to 41-12 before Hondo made it a game. The Eagles, who upset No. 1 seed Dora in the semifinals, outscored the Panthers 28-6 during a stretch that lasted into the fourth. Lake Arthur scored on backto-back possessions after the run, though, putting the game out of reach. The win gave Lake Arthur its seventh state title and the fourth under coach Jose Cruz Porras.

ON THE FOCUS IN

2013 ...

“If we focus on our effort and execution every week, ball disruption on defense and efficiency on the offensive side of the ball, the end result will take care of itself.” The Broncos lost a lot of playmakers off of last yearʼs squad, but this yearʼs recruiting class was loaded with playmakers who can fill those holes. There will be struggles early as the new guys make the transition to college ball, but the pieces are in place to make a run at another bowl game. Quinn Billerman wasnʼt the full-time starter last season, but he saw plenty of time under center. Heʼs a smart player and he will provide a calming influence in the huddle. Devon Paye was slated to be the starter at RB before sustaining a knee injury. Leslie Young saw time last year and figures to be Payeʼs replacement. The defensive line has five regulars back from last season, including Terry Ayeni, Carl Samoa and Taylor Timmons.

• The showdown with the Gila Monsters is crucial for NMMI because it is the first in a stretch of games against four of the leagueʼs perennial powers. Getting off to a good start in that stretch could position NMMI to make a run at one of the top four seeds in the WSFL playoffs, which would make them eligible to win the league title.

Billerman was the leading vote-getter for the captaincy this year, so heʼll be expected to be the team leader. He knows the offense well and he knows how to get the ball into the hands of his weapons. Heʼs got a good arm, he sees the field well and he puts the ball in good positions.

Professional Repair!

Jackson is the leader of NMMIʼs defense. Heʼs a smart player and knows how to get to the ball. Heʼs good at reading the quarterback and he rarely gets caught out of position. Heʼs responsible for the calls in the defensive secondary, but he knows the defense well enough to assist anywhere.

ROBERT JACKSON

Timmons is a legitimate Division I recruit who is explosive and has a quick first step. Heʼs a good tackler and he has the size to disrupt plays in the middle. Heʼs as strong as any player on the team and uses that strength well. He will be among the team leaders in tackles for loss this year.

The second year of the Bob Davie era is filled with just about as many question marks as his first. The Lobos lost 14 starters off last yearʼs team and have 80 players in their first or second years with the program. The offensive line is packed with returnees, something that bodes well for a program that finished fifth in the country in rushing yards per game last season. Sophomore quarterback Cole Gautsche, who started four games and played in 11 last year, is back as well. New Mexicoʼs pistol offense is prolific on the ground, but questions about whether the Lobos can throw it still linger. A lack of depth led directly to UNMʼs six-game losing streak to end 2012, DALLAS BOLLEMA ARTESIA and it will likely be an issue in 2013 as well.

OUTLOOK

• The Lobosʼ Week 3 road trip to Pittsburgh should tell us exactly where the Lobos are in their current rebuilding process. A win, or even a competitive loss, against the Panthers would make a statement in Davieʼs second season in the Duke City.

Look up the phrase “meat grinder” and youʼll find an image of New Mexico Stateʼs 2013 schedule. With the WAC disbanding, the Aggies are facing a difficult schedule that features six teams that qualified for bowl games in 2012. The Aggies do have a huge crop of returning players, but lost their starting quarterback (transfer) and their No. 1 wideout (academically ineligible). The defense should be the strong point, with nearly the entire linebacking corps and secondary returning in 2013. Doug Martin will bring a new philosophy to the table on both sides of the ball, something Aggie fans should welcome after DeWayne Walkerʼs four years produced just 10 victories. ADAM SHAPIRO RIO RANCHO The Aggies enter the year riding an 11-game losing streak.

OUTLOOK

• The Rio Grande Rivalry may be the Aggiesʼ first legitimate chance to win. The Aggies won three in a row in the series before last seasonʼs loss to the Lobos. With no conference affiliation, New Mexico State is facing a brutal schedule that could feature 12 losses if they arenʼt able to knock off its archrival in Albuquerque.

2013 ROSWELL DAILY RECORD FOOTBALL PREVIEW

2013 NFL PREVIEW AFC EAST New England

Offense — Tom Brady is still the leader of the offense, but it will be the running game that carries the Patriots in 2013. Gone are Wes Welker, Brandon Lloyd and Aaron Hernandez and a young, unproven receiving corps will force the hoodie to lean heavily on Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen. Defense — In terms of total defense, the Patriots ranked 25th (373 yards per game). The number that matters, however, is points allowed and the Pats were tied for ninth in that category. With a drop in points scored probable for the offense, the defense will have to remain in the top 10 in ppg to make a playoff run. Overall — The Patriots wonʼt be nearly as good as last year, but in a weak AFC East, they are still the cream of the crop. Donʼt be surprised to see them win nine or 10 games, but still take the division crown.

1

Offense — At press time, the Bills hadnʼt settled on a starting quarterback yet, but regardless who is under center, the offense will only be as productive as C.J. Spiller. As long as Spiller stays healthy and E.J. Manuel or Kevin Kolb donʼt hand the ball to opposing defenses, the offense will be explosive. Defense — Buffaloʼs defense was

2

Buffalo

simply atrocious in 2012. The talent level didnʼt match the production on the field and Buffaloʼs brass determined that a change in philosophy was needed. Enter Mike Pettine. Pettine will bring an attacking defense to Buffalo, which will allow for the Billsʼ talent to play to its strengths. Overall — The Bills defense will be better (it really has nowhere to go but up) and an offense that features Spiller, Stevie Johnson, Marquise Goodwin, T.J. Graham and Robert Woods will put points on the board.

Offense — Miamiʼs offensive additions will bust in 2013. Dustin Keller is already out for the season after suffering a horrific knee injury. Brandon Gibson caught 51 passes last year and Mike Wallace will constantly be double teamed because there is not another threat on offense. Defense — By far, the strength of the Dolphins. Cameron Wake is a one-man wrecking crew and, with the additions of Phillip Wheeler and Dannell Ellerbe, Miamiʼs defense could be even better in 2013. Overall — Miami made the most noise in the offseason, but as any NFL fan knows, that doesnʼt always translate to wins on the field. It wonʼt for Miami.

3

4

Miami

Offense — If comedy is your thing, make sure to watch the anemic Jets

New York

LAWRENCE FOSTER Record Asst. Sports Editor

offense in 2013. Mark Sanchez provided the most chuckles in 2012 with his infamous butt-fumble and things will only get worse for him or Geno Smith in 2013. Defense — The Jets unloaded an unhappy Darrelle Revis, but replaced him with first-round pick Dee Milliner. Milliner, Antonio Cromartie and the rest of the secondary are the strength of New Yorkʼs defense. They will have to be to make up for a lackluster front seven. Overall — Barring a miraculous improvement of Sanchez, this will most likely be Rex Ryanʼs final year in the Big Apple. After coming in with a bang, Ryan will go out with a dud.

AFC NORTH Cincinnati

Offense — Andy Dalton has been a solid starter for Cincinnati for two years, but, if the Bengals want to move beyond the wild-card round, they need more out of the third-year signal caller. Add Giovani Bernard and Tyler Eifert with BenJarvus Green-Ellis, A.J. Green and Jermaine Gresham, and Dalton has no excuse not to take that next step. Defense — The Bengalsʼ defense was in the top 10 in total defense, points allowed and sacks in 2012. Expect more of the same and a bit more nastiness with the additon of James Harrison. Overall — Cincinnatiʼs defense will be at the top of its game, so for the Bengals to take the next step, Dalton

1

needs to raise his game.

Offense — The success of this team rests solely on the shoulders of Brandon Weeden. He has the weapons — Trent Richardson, Greg Little and Josh Gordon — and an underrated offensive line to prove he was worth a first-round pick in 2012. I believe he will prove it wasnʼt a wasted pick. Defense — The Browns switch from a 4-3 to a 3-4 under new DC Ray Horton, and new additions Paul Kruger and Desmond Bryant will help make the transition relatively seamless. Overall — As the roommate of a Browns fan, I have had to watch Cleveland the past few years and they are not as bad as their record would indicate. Their young players have shown flashes of greatness mixed with dashes of learning experiences and this is the year it all comes together for the men in orange.

2

Cleveland

Offense — Yes, Joe Flacco got his money, but at what cost? The Ravens were forced to send Anquan Boldin to San Francisco and anyone who watched a Baltimore playoff game knows how big of a loss that will be for the new $100M man. Add in the season-ending injury to Dennis Pitta and Flacco and the Baltimore offense will be faced with some tough sledding in

3

Baltimore

2013 ROSWELL DAILY RECORD FOOTBALL PREVIEW

2013. Defense — Early in the offseason, it looked as if Baltimoreʼs defense would be filled with no-names following the departures of Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, Dannell Ellerbe, Paul Kruger and Bernard Pollard. The Ravens were able to retool, though, through free agency (Chris Canty, Elvis Dumervil, Michael Huff and Marcus Spears) and the draft (Matt Elam and Arthur Brown). Overall — Defensively, the Ravens will be fine and arguably improved with the influx of talent. The other side of the ball will be a concern all season, however, as teams load up to stop Ray Rice and dare Flacco to beat them with Torrey Smith and Jacoby Jones.

Offense — Pittsburgh can downplay it all it wants, but Ben Roethlisberger and Todd Haley are not on the same page and, until they jell, the Steelersʼ offense will be average at best. Big Ben needs to take better care of the ball and Haley needs to allow Roethlisberger to freelance a bit more. Defense — Dick LeBeauʼs group was the No. 1 defense in terms of yards and sixth in points allowed in 2012, but expect a bit of a drop in 2013. The front seven has too many questions and not enough answers for Pittsburgh to duplicate last yearʼs success. Overall — With Big Ben, Pittsburgh will never be an easy out, but the loss of Mike Wallace will hurt an already middle-of-the-pack offense. If the

4

Pittsburgh

Steelers want to make it back to the playoffs, they will need their defense to play like it did in 2012 and for Big Ben to be Superman.

AFC SOUTH Houston

Offense — Overall, Matt Schaubʼs numbers showed that he had his best season in 2012. As is the case quite often, numbers can be deceptive. After starting 11-1, Houston stumbled down the stretch, going 1-3. During that stretch, Schaub threw for just one TD. With a loaded offense, Schaub must play better late in the season and in the playoffs if the Texans want to advance beyond the divisional round. Defense — The scary thing for the NFL is that the Texans finished in the top 10 in total defense and points allowed with an injured J.J. Watt and just five games from Brian Cushing. With both back at full strength in 2012 and the addition of ballhawk Ed Reed, Houstonʼs defense will be even better in 2013. Overall — Houston has as much talent as any team in the league, so just making the playoffs isnʼt enough anymore. If Schaub can elevate his game in December and January, the Texans have as good a chance as anyone to be playing in February.

1

Offense — Andrew Luck was better than advertised as a rookie in 2012. He showed poise beyond his years in directing seven game-winning drives in the fourth quarter and overtime.

2

Indianapolis

AUGUST 29, 2013

The issue Colts fans need to worry about is his health, because the Stanford product canʼt take as many hits as he did his rookie season. As long as Luck stays healthy, the Coltsʼ offense will be fine. Defense — After allowing 137.5 yards rushing per game in 2012, the Colts added Ricky Jean-Francois and Aubrayo Franklin via free agency and drafted Bjoern Werner in hopes of improving that number. That number should improve regardless as teams will attack a weak secondary. Overall — Not to be punny, but Indianapolis wonʼt be as lucky in 2013 as it was in 2012. Of the Coltsʼ 11 wins last year, eight were by a touchdown or less. The law of averages says the Colts will be due to drop a few of those close games, which will mean no playoffs for Indy this year. Offense — If Jake Locker can stay healthy, the Titan offense has the potential to be explosive in 2013. A healthy Kenny Britt will greatly improve a receiving corps that features holdovers Kendall Wright and Nate Washington, and 2013 secondround pick Justin Hunter. Newcomers Andy Levitre and Chance Warmack solidify the interior of the offensive line and should make the going easier for Chris Johnson. Defense — This unit will benefit from a more aggressive style in 2013. That change in philosophy will especially help DEs Derrick Morgan and Kamerion Wimbley, who didnʼt live up to his $35M deal last year. Overall — With a healthy Locker,

3

Tennessee

23

2013 NFL PREVIEW

the Titans will improve by two wins and, if they can steal a win or two, could contend for a wild-card spot.

Offense — The Jags will compete with the Jets for the title of worst offense in football. Blaine Gabbert has shown no signs of being worthy of being drafted in the first round and Chad Henne ... is Chad Henne. Even a healthy season from Maurice Jones-Drew wonʼt be enough to elevate Jacksonvilleʼs popgun offense. Defense — At least Jacksonville will be awful on this side of the ball as well. The Jags were at or near the bottom in every major defensive category and with little to no influx of talent, it actually could get worse before it gets better. Overall — Jacksonville will be terrible in 2013. Gabbert will once again flounder and, with the top pick in the 2014 draft, Jacksonville will once again attempt to get a QB of the future.

4

Jacksonville

AFC WEST Kansas City

Offense — Kansas City has a ton of talent on offense and, thanks to the addition of Alex Smith and new head coach Andy Reid (who will never look right in red), the Chiefs will be greatly improved on this side of the ball in 2013. Jamaal Charles will become even more dangerous as Reid uses him more in the passing game. Defense — The Chiefsʼ biggest weakness on defense in 2012 was the play of its secondary. That wonʼt be

the case this year, however, after Kansas City signed free agents Dunta Robinson and Sean Smith. If Dontari Poe can improve in his second year and Mike DeVito continues to play strong against the run, Kansas Cityʼs defense can be a top-10 unit. Overall — If Alex Smith can take care of the ball and once again complete roughly 70 percent of his passes, the Chiefs will shock many pundits and win the division.

Offense — After proving he was the Manning of old, Peyton will be even better in 2013. Wes Welker is a big improvement over Brandon Stokley. The big question is who will replace Willis McGahee in the backfield? As long as they can pass block, it really wonʼt matter. Defense — Denver will be hard pressed to match last yearʼs output on defense. Not only did the Broncos lose Elvis Dumervil thanks to a fax snafu, but with Von Miller being suspended for the first six games of the year, Denver will struggle to put pressure on opposing QBs. That will mean a much-maligned secondary will get torched, often. Overall — Peyton and the offense will have to win 41-38 games early in the season until Miller can come back and get into game shape. Luckily for the Broncos, the Denver offense is more than capable.

2

3

Denver

Offense — Not to sound like a broken record, but the Chargersʼ success will largely

San Diego

come down to Phillip Rivers and his ability to limit mistakes. Rivers has thrown 35 picks the past two seasons and he needs to be smarter with his decisions if San Diego wants to battle for a wild-card spot. Donʼt expect Ryan Mathews to shed the injury bug in his fourth year. Defense — The front seven of the Chargers had better play well in 2013 because the secondary will be breaking in at least three new starters. In a division that features Peyton Manning and Andy Reidʼs pass-happy offensive philosophy, that will spell trouble for San Diego. Overall — I still donʼt understand how San Diego let Vincent Jackson leave two years ago and Rivers will continue to struggle without the big wideout.

Offense — When Terrelle Pryor is a legitmate option to start under center, you are in for a long season. Pryor has played better than Matt Flynn in the preseason and, at press time, seems to be on track to get the start in Week 1. If there were ever a year where the Raiders needed Darren McFadden to stay healthy, it would be this year. Donʼt count on it. Defense — There was much turnover on this side of the ball in the offseason. Eight of last seasonʼs 11 starters on defense are gone, but it may actually be a good thing after those starters helped allow nearly 28 points a game in 2012. Overall — Oakland will be right there with Jacksonville battling for the No. 1 draft pick.

NFC EAST Dallas

Offense — Romo gets too much of the blame for Dallasʼ shortcomings the past few years. Yes, he threw 19 picks in 2012, but he was also sacked 36 times and, if not for his mobility, that number would have been upwards of 50. A running game would also help keep Romo upright. If the Cowboys are to improve on their 31st-ranked rushing attack, DeMarco Murray has to stay healthy for 16 games. Defense — Dallasʼ defense will be better simply because DeMarcus Ware can focus on collapsing the pocket as a defensive end in Monte Kiffinʼs new 4-3 scheme. Any down where Ware isnʼt pinning his ears back is a wasted down. Not much was added to help Dallasʼ defense, so the scheme change and a full season from Sean Lee will have to be enough. Overall — This is the year where it all comes together for Dallas. Murray will stay healthy for the entire season and that will help Romo find his bevy of targets. Dallasʼ defense will also make strides under Monte Kiffin. Dallas will end its three-year playoff drought with a division title.

1

Offense — Eli Manning had what most would call a “blah” season. After a hot start, he tailed off for a rather uninspiring season. That is the problem with the Giants. They have the potential to be the best team in the league (just look at the two Lombardi trophies), but some games it seems

2

New York

like they donʼt care. Manningʼs job will be easier if Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks are healthy. If either miss significant time, New York will be in serious trouble. Defense — It all starts upfront for the G-Men. If Justin Tuck, Jason Pierre-Paul and company are on, opposing quarterbacks will be down. New York will need them to be on quite often to help mask a suspect secondary. Overall — The Giants are one of the most difficult teams to predict in the league. They have all the talent to play in another Super Bowl, but the issue has always been consistency. Even in the two years where they won the Super Bowl, their combined regular season record was 19-13.

Offense — The big question here is will Robert Griffin III be ready for the season opener against the Eagles? As of press time, there was no concrete answer, but the smart money is on the second-year quarterback lining up under center Week 1. While the Redskins ease RG3 back into the offense, expect Alfred Morris to be featured heavily. Defense — Washington will benefit from the return of Brian Orakpo, which will help the entire defense. Without Orakpo, Washington suffered, collecting just 32 sacks. His rushes off the edge mean that the ʼSkins wonʼt have to blitz as much, and will help a secondary that surrendered 282 yards a game through the air in 2012. Overall — If RG3 can pull off an Adrian Peterson-like comeback,

3

Washington

Washington will once again challenge for the division title. That isnʼt likely, however, and Washington will struggle the first month of the season as a result. By the end of the year, however, the Redskins will mark themselves as a legitimate Super Bowl team entering 2014.

Offense — Michael Vick was named the starter for Chip Kellyʼs uptempo offense. He will need to be on top of his game after the rash of injuries that happened to the WR unit during the preseason. After a down season, LeSean McCoy will reclaim his spot as one of the leagueʼs best backs. It will also help that Kellyʼs offense will run the ball more than Andy Reidʼs did. Defense — The defense will be the reason that Chip Kellyʼs first season will result in double-digit defeats. The Eagles allowed nearly 28 points a game in 2012 and Philadelphia just swapped pieces (Asomugha for Cary Williams; Cullen Jenkins for Isaac Sopoaga) instead of improving the defense. Overall — It will be interesting to see how Kellyʼs system works in the NFL. At the very least, it will be entertaining to watch and challenging for production trucks to keep up with. The defense will be the undoing for the Eagles, however.

4

Philadelphia

NFC NORTH Green Bay

1

Offense — Green Bay will be potent so long as they have Aaron Rodgers under

center. Protecting Rodgers, already an issue heading into 2013, became more difficult when Bryan Bulaga was lost for the season. Rodgers is intelligent enough to make up for that loss, however. The loss of Greg Jennings, a big blow for pretty much any other team in the league, will barely register for the Packers. Jordy Nelson, Jermichael Finley, Randall Cobb and James Jones are as potent a foursome as there is in the league. Defense — The Packers will miss Charles Woodsonʼs leadership, but it was the right time to let the veteran leave. Aside from first-round pick Datone Jones, Green Bay didnʼt add much to its defense, but when the unit tallied 47 sacks and allowed just 21 ppg, why should it have tinkered? Overall — Green Bay has one of the most talented rosters in the league and it will show once again in 2013. Green Bay will cruise to a division title, and a Super Bowl run is very possible for Title Town.

Offense — Jay Cutler is easily one of the most infuriating players in the league. He can look brilliant for an entire drive and then throw into triple coverage in the end zone. Iʼm not even a Bears fan, but when I watch him, I want to rip my hair out. When Cutler isnʼt brain farting, he is picking himself off the ground. That isnʼt all on the Chicago offensive line — Cutler has a tendency to hold onto the ball too long — but a large part of the blame falls on the big uglies up front. Defense — Brian Urlacher will be missed, for sure, but more as a leader

2

Chicago

and locker room guy than on the field. Chicagoʼs defense will continue to stifle opponents and create turnovers in bunches. Overall — The Bears defense will be fine sans Urlacher. The season hinges on Chicagoʼs ability to keep Cutler upright and the signal callerʼs ability to avoid costly gaffes.

Offense — In 2012, it was the Calvin Johnson show in Detroit. As great as Johnson is, he needs some help and should get some with healthy seasons from Nate Burleson and Ryan Broyles. The addition of Reggie Bush will also help take some pressure off Megatron. The Lions have all the pieces in place to be the top offense in 2013. Defense — Detroit has the best pair of defensive tackles in the league in Nick Fairley and Ndamukong Suh, but not much else after that. Rookie Ziggy Ansah will show flashes, but 2013 will be a learning experience for the green defensive end. Detroitʼs secondary has been so bad in the preseason that it brought in Rashean Mathis. Didnʼt realize Mathis was still in the league? You werenʼt the only one. Overall — The Lions should be entertaining to watch every week because their offense will put up a ton of points. It will have to because opposing offenses will feast on a porous Lion defense.

3

4

Detroit

Offense — Adrian Peterson had arguably the best season ever by a run-

Minnesota

ning back in 2012. He defied all expectations last year after tearing his ACL and PCL at the end of the 2011 season, falling 8 yards shy of Eric Dickersonʼs single-season record. He will have to be just as good, if not better, in 2013 if the Vikings want to avoid the NFC North basement. Minnesota added Greg Jennings and Cordarrelle Patterson, so Christian Ponder has no excuse in his third year. It is do-or-die time for the former Florida State Seminole. Defense — The Vikings spent two first round-picks on defensive players — Sharrif Floyd and Xavier Rhodes — and if both can have an impact in their rookie years, the Vikings should become a top-10 defense. Overall — After shocking many and making the playoffs in 2012, Minnesota will fall back to Earth with a thud — sorry Randy.

NFC SOUTH Atlanta

Offense — Matt Ryan and the Falcons finally broke through in 2012, winning Atlantaʼs first playoff berth in the Ryan-Mike Smith era. An offense that already featured Julio Jones, Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez added former Ram Steven Jackson in the offseason. Jackson, one of the most underrated players in the league, will be rejuvenated playing for a Super Bowl contender. Defense — The Falcons didnʼt make many changes on the defensive side of the ball heading into 2013. They picked up Osi Umenyiora to replace John Abraham and drafted a corner with each of their first two

2013 NFL PREVIEW

picks. That should mean another stellar season for a unit that allowed less than 19 points a game last year. Overall — Atlanta took a big step last year, winning a playoff game, and this year anything less than an appearance in the Super Bowl will be a disappointment.

Offense — Statistically, Cam Newton has had a great first two years in the NFL. But QBs arenʼt judged on statistics, they are judged on wins and losses and, in that regard, Newton and the Panthers have disappointed. A hot start by Newton and the rest of the offense will be key for the Panthersʼ playoff hopes. Defense — Carolina was 10th in total defense in 2012 and much of the Panthersʼ efforts in the offseason were used to solidify the unit. The Panthers spent their first two picks on defensive tackles, a smart move that is much appreciated by middle linebacker Luke Kuechly. Kuechly excelled after his move to middle linebacker last year and, if this preseason is any indication, he is even better entering Year 2. Overall — The Panthers have the talent to challenge for the division, but it comes down to the beginning of the year. In 2011, they started 2-8 before finishing 6-10 and, last year, they started 2-8 again, before winning five of their final six games. Even a mediocre start would mean a playoff spot for Carolina.

2

Carolina

Offense — Doug Martin had an outstanding rookie season in 2012. The running back rushed for 1,454 yards and added another 472 yards receiving, proving he is already among the elite backs in the NFL. The Muscle Hamster will do his part, but the success of the Tampa Bay offense will come down to the maturation of Josh Freeman. If Freeman struggles, donʼt be surprised if Greg Schiano turns to rookie Mike Glennon. Defense — Talk about feast or

3

Page 26

Tampa Bay

famine. Tampa Bay was the topranked team against the run in 2012, but was dead last in pass defense. Enter Revis Island. The Bucs traded for the disgruntled Jets CB and assuming he is healthy coming off a torn ACL, Revis will shut down one side of the field. Free agent acquisition Dashon Goldson will also make a big impact in the back end. Overall — After starting 6-4 in 2012, the Bucs dropped five of their final six games and finished 7-9. Tampa Bay will be more consistent in 2013, but it wonʼt be enough to secure a wild-card spot. Offense — The reunion tour starts in Atlanta on opening day. What reunion? That of Sean Payton and Drew Brees. The duo will be out with a vengeance in 2013 after Payton was suspended for the entire 2012 season for his role in Bountygate. Another top-five finish in offense is likely for the Saints. Defense — And this is where the reunion tour gets ruined. The Saintsʼ defense allowed a league-record (thatʼs not a good thing here) 7,042 yards in 2012 and just lost Will Smith for the season with a torn ACL. Couple that with a new defensive coordinator and system, and things may actually get worse before they get better. Overall — The Saintsʼ offense will be one of the best in the league, while the defense will be among the worst. That doesnʼt equate to a playoff spot in 2013.

4

New Orleans

NFC WEST (AKA the best division in football)

Offense — The 49ers got a steal when they traded for Anquan Boldin. The move will help offset the loss of Michael Crabtree, who tore his Achilles during the offseason. Entering his first full season as the starter, Colin Kaepernick has the potential to be the best QB in the league. He has a rocket for an arm and if he can become a

1

San Francisco

more accurate passer, he will be unstoppable. Defense — San Francisco has the best set of LBs in the league and the best defense outside of Seattle. Aldon Smith, Patrick Willis, NaVorro Bowman and Ahmad Brooks are unstoppable and, with the return of a healthy Justin Smith, they may be even better in 2013. The only issue for the 49ers is how rookie Eric Reid will replace the departed Dashon Goldson. Overall — The most competitive division in the league will be won by the most complete team in the NFC West. The final step for this team is to hoist the Lombardi Trophy.

other pass a year ago, Bradford had his best year as a pro and the addition of rookie Tavon Austin gives the fourth-year signal caller a true gamebreaker. Defense — This is one of the most underrated units in the league. St. Louis was tied for the league lead with 52 sacks a year ago and tied for 11th with 17 picks. As long as the injury bug doesnʼt bite, the Rams defense should be even better in Year 2 of the Jeff Fisher era. Overall — The Rams went 4-1-1 against the NFC West last year. If they can somehow figure out the rest of the league, the Rams will compete for a wild card.

2

4

Offense — Russell Wilson was a revelation in 2012 and the sky is the limit for him and the Seahawk offense. While Wilson understandably grabbed most of the headlines last year, the engine that really makes the Seattle offense purr is Marshawn Lynch. Beast Mode rushed for nearly 1,600 yards and he makes sure teams have to stay honest. Percy Harvinʼs injury is what will keep this offense from becoming an elite unit. Defense — Along with the 49ers, Seattle has the best defense in the league. No matter if you are a running team or a team that likes to air it out, Seattle will shut you down and with the additions of Cliff Avril and Antoine Winfield, the going will be even tougher for opposing offenses. Overall — The Seahawks will be right there with San Francisco all year, but ultimately the injury to Harvin, who Seattle was really counting on to provide a home run threat on offense, will be the difference.

Seattle

Offense — The Rams offense was 25th in the league in scoring in 2012 and, unless a running back steps up — which hasnʼt happened in the preseason — points will once again be hard to come by. Despite his receivers seemingly dropping every

3

St. Louis

Offense — After years of torture (read: watching the likes of John Skelton and Derek Anderson play QB), the Cardinals went out and got Carson Palmer. While no world-beater, Palmer is a significant upgrade. The problem will be keeping the immobile Palmer healthy behind a horrible offensive line. Despite QB play that more closely resembled Brucie from “The Longest Yard,” Larry Fitzgerald was able to remain one of the five best WRs in the league. Defense — This just in: There is another team in the NFC West with a good defense. Despite an offense that ranked dead last in yards and second to last in points scored, Arizonaʼs defense was able to hold opponents to 22 ppg. By simply having an average offense, the Cardinalsʼ defense will improve because it wonʼt have to feel like it has to hold teams scoreless to win. Overall — In another division, the Cardinals wouldnʼt be in the basement. But in the buzzsaw that is the NFC West, the Cards will finish in last.
