Did you know? Tithes have become synonymous with religious giving, but tithing was not always connected to religion.

"Tithe" comes from the Old English word "teogoa," which means "tenth." It evolved to refer to a percentage of an individual's income that is paid in dues, primarily to a church. A tithe also referred to a group of 10 households that lived close to one another and acted as sureties to the king.

Some suggest the religious tithe concept was established in ancient Hebrew and Old Testament teachings. While there may be mentions of tithing in religious documents, most scholars confirm that New

Testament scriptures are most responsible for the concept of religious tithing. The Christian Church didn't officially adopt tithing until the year 787 under Pope Adrian I. Tithing actually can be traced back even further than the beginnings of Christianity and Judaica, however. There are references to tithes as early as ancient Mesopotamian times and other eras of the Ancient Near East. A tithe may be an amount voluntarily held aside for charitable giving. It also may be a tax or levy placed on a person's income. To keep with the ancient concept of tithing, many people tithe 10 percent of their income.

Explaining the Christian Holy Season Jesus Christ's last supper with his disciples. His act of breaking bread and offering it as His "body" and sharing wine as His "blood" has become an integral part of the Christian mass. It is representative of Christ giving up His life in place of our sins.

About one-third of the planet, or roughly 2.1 billion people, are Christians. Each spring, this large subset of the population celebrates the religious miracle that is the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Lenten season is one of the holiest times of the year on the Christian calendar. This is a period of 40 days and nights that begins with Ash Wednesday at the beginning of Lent and lasts through Easter Sunday. Many Christians celebrate Easter but may not know the significance or meaning behind certain days on the Lenten calendar. Here is a primer on the Lenten season for Christians and nonChristians alike.

Ash Wednesday

In the Roman Catholic Church, Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent, the season when one prepares for the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Ash Wednesday always falls 46 days before Easter and will vary according to the calendar.

Ash Wednesday is a Holy Day of Obligation, which means parishioners are expected to attend mass to mark the beginning of the holy season. During the mass, celebrants receive ashes in the form of a cross on their foreheads. The ashes are made from burning the blessed palm fronds from last year's Palm Sunday mass.

Good Friday Nowadays, ashes allow Christians to humbly display an outward sign that they are aware of their shortcomings and are cleansing their souls in the preparation for the celebration of Christ's resurrection.

Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week and it is a day of obligation when Christians attend mass, and they receive fronds of blessed palms. Occurring a week before Easter, Palm Sunday commemorates the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. The gospels record the arrival of Jesus riding into the city on a donkey, while the crowds spread their cloaks and palm branches on the street and shouted "Hosanna to the Son of David" and "Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord" to honor him as their long-awaited Messiah and King.

Holy Thursday

In ancient times ashes were worn Holy Thursday is the Thursday as a symbol of sorrow, repentance preceding Easter Sunday. It marks and acknowledgment of sins.

Good Friday is also known as Black Friday but should not be mistaken with the post-Thanksgiving Black Friday. It is the day that Jesus had to march to his crucifixion site while carrying an extremely heavy wooden cross. Jesus was mocked, spit on, tortured, and forced to wear a crown of thorns during His jour-

ney after being arrested by Judas and then suffering at the hands of Pontius Pilate. After being nailed to the cross at His palms and ankles, Jesus suffered for six hours before He died. Jesus died on the cross for the sins of the people.

Easter Sunday

The holiest day of the season is Easter Sunday. On this day, Jesus rose from His tomb. Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and found Jesus missing. Jesus then approached her and showed how he was again alive. His disciples were shocked at the appearance of his resurrected self, furthering their faith in him as the Son of God.

How to choose a Confirmation name

For many young Catholics, the day they receive the sacrament of Confirmation is a day for which they have spent years preparing. When Catholics are confirmed, they become adults in the eyes of the church. But before candidates can receive the sacrament, they first must fulfill a number of obligations. One such obligation is choosing a Confirmation name, so young Catholics have a source of inspiration and a patron saint to protect and guide them through the rest of their lives. Choosing a Confirmation name is a task not to be taken lightly, and candidates typically must choose the name of a canonized saint for their Confirmation name. There are exceptions that allow Catholics to choose the name of someone who has not been canonized, but candidates must discuss these options with their teachers or priest. Learning about the saints is a great way to start the process. Male candidates are required to choose a male name, and females must choose a

When choosing a Confirmation name, don't choose one based on how different the name itself might sound. While this might amuse you and your friends, as you and your faith grow you might eventually regret choosing a name for such a silly reason. Though it's acceptable to choose a name that is extraordinary, just be certain you're doing it for the right reasons and not to get a rise out of your friends. Choosing a Confirmation name is an important part of preparing to receive the sacrament of Confirmation. Candidates should take the decision seriously and work hard to find a saint whose life is truly inspiring.

The meaning of Confirmation

Confirmation is one of the seven sacraments within the Catholic faith. During Confirmation, Catholics receive the Holy Spirit and become adults in the eyes of the church. Most Catholics are confirmed around the ages of 14 or 15, and the ceremony is presided over by a bishop, who possesses the fullness of the priesthood but also rules a diocese as its chief pastor. Though once routinely performed before a child reached his or her first birthday, nowadays the western Catholic church confers the sacrament when people are old enough

to understand it. After the Second Vatican Council, which occurred in the 1960s and addressed the relationship between the Catholic Church and the modern world, it became normal for Catholics to receive the sacrament of Confirmation between the sixth and tenth grades. This time span is considered to be the age of discretion, or when Catholics have a reached a point in their lives where they have been deemed to be morally responsible.

“Jesus Christ is Lord.” I did not come to this conclusion after spending countless hours at a formal altar in a church building or after staring at a stained glass mosaic depicting the history of religion. “Jesus Christ is Lord.” I did not come to this conclusion after spending countless hours in a scientific laboratory attempting by historical research, to validate the deity or holiness of Christ. I tried that and failed. What revealed to me that Jesus Christ is Lord is my faith in Him. This is not a claim that can be demonstrated in an objective or scientific manner. I am taking the risk that Jesus Christ is Lord. I am declaring today that – that risk has become a reality in my life. I used to keep Jesus at a comfortable distance. I met him close up in the street. I liked what I saw. Jesus is now the focus of my faith. A radical shift has taken place in my religious consciousness. It was not with fanfare or blaring trumpet that ushered God into my life.
