est bidder — it’s a rollin‚’ good time! A thank you to the City of Roswell as they provide police and firefighters to make sure you are in a completely safe environment as you enjoy your time with us. Safety is paramount to us and we suggest you follow some simple steps for their safety. First, take a picture on your cellphone of your child in case you get separated. This will give us a visual image as we search for your child. Second, place a note with your cellphone number in the pocket of their clothing then we can make immediate contact with you. More than likely you will never need these safety rules but it’s better to be safe. I would like to thank the many volunteers that help put on this event, without you it would not be possible. A big shout out goes to our board members, office personnel in the main office, the Junior Livestock office ladies, and our grounds manager and his staff — great teamwork! Most of all the Eastern New Mexi-
co State Fair would like to say thank you for coming and being a part of this year ’s Fair. Without your support we would not be able to continue this great tradition. Our theme this year is “92 Years of Wheels and Squeals.” Be sure to check out our web site, enmsf.com, for further information and the schedule for the week long Fair. Come join us as we cherish our history and celebrate our bright future.

92 Years: Down Home Country Fair
Welcome to an event 92 years in the making! The Eastern New Mexico State Fair has a long and proud history. Although we count 92 years from the first Chaves County Cotton Carnival in 1922, the roots of the fair began many years before that with the Southeastern New Mexico and Pecos Valley Fair Association. The purpose of the fair was to exhibit agricultural and orchard products. The fairs of 1892 and 1893 were an opportunity for local residents to show how productive the Pecos Valley could be. Even local farmers were surprised at the array of
crops represented at the fair. The highlight of the event however was the Alfalfa Palace. This architectural phenomenon was constructed of bales of sweetsmelling alfalfa and resembled a castle complete with battlements. The Alfalfa Palace was more than an amazing structure as it also housed the local exhibits. Covered pens were adjacent to the palace and housed the livestock. It is noted that as the wind began to blow, the Palace had to be evacuated and one lady reluctant to leave was carried out by a concerned gentleman. It was later discovered that the “lady” was actually a dummy of Martha Washington from one of the displays. The gentleman in question was considered no less heroic upon this revelation. Those early days of community gathering would slowly evolve into the Eastern New Mexico State Fair that we enjoy today. The first parade to open a fair was held in 1900. This first parade created a new name for the fair. There was such a wondrous display of floral decorations that the fair became known as the “Flower Fair”. Today’s parade boasts over a hundred floats and entries representing businesses, schools, teams, clubs, and more. In the early fair

days children from local schools were given three days off so that they and their families may enjoy the fair. Today, the opening day of the fair is knows as “Fair Day” and many children and their families attend to celebrate the commencement of fair week. The tradition of gathering every year to show off crops and wares has continued since the 1890’s with few exceptions. Although there was a lapse during World War I the fair continued in 1922 when the Cotton Carnival came into being. A noted addition to the fair began this year when a Cotton King was crowned in grand style on the Courthouse lawn. In 1923 a poll of fair visitors indicated that along with local residents, 25 states were represented amongst the fairgoers. Hispanic Culture Day celebrates Mexican culture with music, food
By Randal Seyler Record City Editor

EASTERN NEW MEXICO STATE FAIR
Visitors to the Eastern New Mexico State Fair will get a taste of traditional Mexican food, folk music and dancing on Saturday, Oct. 4. Hispanic Culture Day is a daylong event featuring traditional Mexican dance, mariachi music, and lots of traditional Mexican cuisine, says Gabriel Mendez, owner of Guro Graphix and graphic designer for the event. Let’s Play Entertainment and Guro Graphix are the sponsors of Hispanic Culture Day. “We will have a lot of bands playing that day, and we also will have some surprise bands,” Mendez said. “A lot of times there will be bands passing through the state, and we will get a band passing through to come pay that day.” Admission to the Hispanic Culture Day events is free, with paid admission into the fair. “Visitors don’t pay any extra to enjoy the music,” Mendez said. “The event is becoming really popular, and as it grows, we hope to have even more popular bands at our next event.” The event will begin at noon on Saturday and go until 11 p.m. The bands that are confirmed are advertised on the flier, Mendez said. “This is a big event this year for Roswell,” Mendez said. “You will get to see traditional Mexican dance and hear real mariachi, that is something you don’t get to see very often around here.” Bands confirmed for the event include El Adventureo (a musical imitator who plays in the style of Paquita, Juan Gabriel and Vicente Fernanez), Aventura Norte and Grupo Maldad, along with other, yet to be announced bands. “I personally will definitely go for mariachi, you rarely see that anywhere else outside of Mexico,” Mendez said. “The folklorico will be really cool.” Baile Folklorico Mexicano derives from Mexico’s indigenous, European and, to some extent, African heritages, according to Wikipedia. “While dance had been an important part of

the country’s pre Hispanic history, most of these dances were either eliminated by evangelization or modified with only few dance forms surviving mostly intact. Other dances performed in Mexico include those brought from Europe by the Spanish, with some of these also experiencing changes,” the website states. Folk dance, despite modernization and other social efforts, has survived and even strengthened since the colonial period, according to the website. One reason for the popularity of Baile Folklorico is Mexico’s desire for a national identity, first after the Mexican War of Independence and again after the Mexican Revolution. The surge in popularity of folk dancing served to elevate a number of dances to national and even international prominence such as the Jarabe Tapatío or Mexican Hat

Dance. Hispanic Culture Day has been part of the Eastern New Mexico State Fair for about 4 years, but in the past two years the event has really taken off, Mendez said. “At first, it was a mix of cultures, featuring both Hispanic and country music, but for the past two years, it has been strictly a Hispanic cultural event.” The Roswell event is gaining a statewide reputation for quality. “We’ve gotten a good response lately,” Mendez said. “I went to Clovis and Portales recently and people there were asking when the Roswell fair was starting because they knew Hispanic music was going to be playing in the fair. People are beginning to recognize Roswell as the one fair in the state

that has a traditional Hispanic music event, and that is a big deal.” Mendez said typically baile folklorico isn’t seen outside of Mexico. “You won’t see this type of dancing in Roswell unless you are on Youtube,” he said. “These bands very popular, and we are hoping this year more people will recognize what we trying to do with mariachi folklorcio — which is raise awareness of Hispanic culture.” The Hispanic Culture Day is a recognition of a people’s roots, Mendez said, and this year’s event will celebrate Mexican history and culture. “This is a day to make you feel like you are in Mexico again,” he said. “This is going to be a Mexican heritage day, 100 percent.” First time visitors to Hispanic Culture Day should definitely check out the food, Mendez said.
“First-timers need to try the food,” Mendez recommends. “If you haven’t tried traditional Mexican food, definitely try that.” There are a number of restaurants that will be on hand. “And definitely, everyone should also enjoy the music.” City Editor Randal Seyler may be contacted at 622-7710, ext. 311, or reporter02@rdrnews.com.

ENM State Fair safety tips from RPD
By Bill Moffitt Record Correspondent
With the Eastern New Mexico State Fair now upon us, the Roswell Police Department has some tips for parents to help make their visit to the fair a safe one for their chil-
dren. One easy tip is to take a picture of your child, with your smart phone or digital camera, showing the clothing that they are wearing to the event. This serves as a memory jogger for the parents and it can be shown to police officers if needed.
EASTERN NEW MEXICO STATE FAIR
RPD Commander Thomas R. Moody said that officers will be patrolling the fairgrounds and are always ready to help in finding lost children. “Officers of the Roswell Police Department and New Mexico State Police will be present at the Eastern New Mexico State Fair to help ensure that everyone has a safe, enjoyable experience,” Moody said. “All officers will be enforcing any violation of the law, but are also there to help in case children are separated from their parents or guardians.” “We suggest that parents and children stay in close contact with each other,” Moody added. “If a child does become separated from their parent or guardian, the child should go to the Roswell Police Department’s Command Post or the Roswell Fire Department’s Command Post, which are both
located near the Commercial Building. They can also go to the Roswell Fire Department’s booth inside the Commercial Building. Parents can also report their child as missing at any of these locations.” Police officers will be spread throughout the fairgrounds and can also be contacted by lost children or their parents. “Children should be reminded that, although there are many interesting people at the fair, they should never go anywhere with a stranger,” Moody said. Sometimes children take off on their own with an older sibling or friend in charge. Setting a return time and a meeting place can also help in such cases. Also, “parents should try to make sure that they know where their children are going and who they are going with,” Moody added.

Chisum Challenge showcases ranch life
By Jeff Tucker Record Staff Writer
The real-life wild cow milking, trailer loading, stray gathering and bronc riding skills of ranchers from several states will be on full display Oct. 3 and 4 during the fifth annual Chisum Challenge at the Eastern New Mexico

State Fair. Forty bronc riders will be vying for a $12,500 pot during the Chisum Challenge Open Ranch Bronc Riding on Oct. 4. The fair begins Monday, Sept. 29, at the Eastern New Mexico State Fairgrounds in Roswell. Bronc riders from New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Oklahoma and Texas are expected to compete in the annual bronc riding event at the fairgrounds. Participants are real-life cowboys, not rodeo professionals. “These are everyday guys that come off these ranches,” said Chisum Challenge organizer Kyle “Smiley” Wooton. “They ride these broncs in their everyday working ranch saddles.” Wooton said the broncs from Arizona are professional rodeo bucking horses sure to give their amateur riders a challenge. Michael Brockett of Arizona won first place at the 2013 Chisum Challenge Open Ranch Bronc Riding

competition. Logan Westcott took second place, Devon Sisneros won third and Kyle Goss took fourth. The Chisum Challenge Ranch Rodeo will be held Oct. 3, showcasing the real-life, everyday ranch skills of cowboys and cowgirls. Fifteen, four-man teams will compete Oct. 3 in the ranch chores of wild cow milking, trailer loading and stray gathering. The top five ranch rodeo teams from Oct. 3 will come back Oct. 4 and compete for money and prizes. The ranch rodeo stock is provided by Speedy Hutchinson of Corona. 4K Livestock of Roswell was the winner in wild cow milking, trailer loading and stray gathering at Friday night’s competition during the 2013 Chisum Challenge Open Ranch Rodeo. Angell Ranch of Lovington won the Ultimate Chisum Challenge on Friday night at last year’s fair. On Saturday Night at the 2013 Chisum Challenge, 4K Livestock won
the trailer loading and stray gathering events, while Blackwater Ranch of Portales won the wild cow milking. Higg Ranch of Texas won the Ultimate Chisum Challenge on Saturday night at last year’s competition. The Chisum Challenge is sponsored by the Chaves County Rodeo Association, in partnership with the Eastern New Mexico State Fair. “We’ve done this with them for several years, 12 years probably,” Wooton said. All proceeds from the Chisum Challenge go to the Chaves County Rodeo Association program, whose motto is Promoting the Western Way of Life. The rodeo association’s scholarship program donates money to students across New Mexico, most of them local. “In 2014, we gave $19,000 in scholarships,” Wooton said. “We’ve been doing that since 2006. Since 2006, we’ve donated over $120,000 to rural and ranch-raised youth.”

a granddad hat and, of course, the biggest of all - supporter hat. That hat worn by Johnny Ogden, in the opinion of many, can never be replaced. Along with the Dairy industry, and school activities, the ENMSF has lost a dear friend.
Johnny hat: Husband to the love of his life and father to three daughters, was the first and final hat Johnny wore. Johnny fondly referred to his wife Janice as his bride, Johnny and Janice shared 48 years of marriage and raised three daughters, Debbie Allen, Sherrye Lovelace, and Tammy Fraze. Johnny and Janice have 12 grandkids and 2 greatgrandkids; to those twelve, and most of Eastern New Mexico, he is Granddad Johnny. Johnny filled his spare time with supporting his grandchildren at ropings, sporting events, band practices and anything else that was important to his grandkids. He loved his family and was so proud of their lives together. Johnny left a legacy of love for his girls. Each one of them shares one of the hats that Johnny wore; Debbie with her Husband Curtis, is a strong volunteer and supporter of the ENMSF and the 4-H and FFA programs. Sherrye is a certified teacher and has a passion for young people’s education. Tammy shares the career hat with Johnny as she is employed in the dairy industry in Portales. Of all of the amazing hats that Johnny wore, this hat, by far, was my favorite because he was Daddy, and he wore that hat the best.

Children’s Day and Special Needs Day build memories
The fair can be fun for families or work for those running it, but regardless of whether it's a job to time to play, the fair offers the opportunity to educate children. Nearly 1200 school-aged children will arrive at the fair grounds and go on tours to see exhibits and the animals, and learn how FFA and 4H kids raise those animals, said tour coordinator Cheryl Butterfield. "I wanted kids to have more of an educational experience," she said, explaining the reason she helped organize the concept. On Tuesday, the day will be specifically for special needs students. These children will have the chance to visit the fair in a way that allows them to really see everything instead of being stuck behind a mass of adults when an
event happens. Last year there were roughly 850 people on Special Needs Day, including parents, teacher and students, Butterfield said. She said the best part for the students is the aspect of a smaller crowd since the tour takes place during the school day. Following Special Needs Day will be Children's Day on Friday. Having more than 1,000 people on Children's Day last year, Butterfield expects another large crowd. The age of the students will depend on specifics of the schools, but most of the students are second through fourthgraders. They will, however, also often times have kindergartners, sixth-graders and even ninth-graders. For the last ten years Butterfield has

They are and will continue at the fair. helpful and easy to coordinate with, whereas with the State Fair she did everything on her own. Her favorite part however, besides having good teamwork within the schools, is seeing high school students educate the younger children. "It's fun to show the education part itself, but seeing kids lead these large groups of people (is inspiring,)" Butterfield said. She trained the FFA and 4H teenagers, but they lead the groups on their own as they try to share information on the animals. Butterfield liked the education element so much she actually recently became a
