Properly maintained headlights vastly improve driver safety
(MS) - The importance of maintaining a vehicle cannot be understated. In addition to protecting their financial investments, drivers who properly maintain their vehicles are also protecting themselves and their passengers. Many elements of vehicle maintenance become second nature to drivers once they have a few months of driving under their belts. Oil changes, routine checkups and periodic vehicle inspections can keep cars running smoothly and safely on the road. But few drivers remember to maintain their headlights, a potentially dangerous oversight that can compromise the safety of drivers and their fellow motorists.
Old or poorly maintained headlights can be hazardous for a variety of reasons. When coupled with inclement weather, outdated or dirty headlights can make it difficult for drivers to see pedestrians and other vehicles. In addition, drivers who struggle to see at night may find their visibility further compromised by older headlights that don't provide the light they need to navigate their vehicles safely once the sun has gone down.
Because headlights can have such a dramatic impact on driver safety, it's important that motorists take the following steps to maintain their headlamps. · Recognize when bulbs start to dim. As headlight bulbs age, their light output is reduced by the effects of humidity, electrical resistance,
Numerous studies have shown that roughly one-third of auto accidents occur at night, when driver visibility is most compromised. So in addition to maintaining their headlights, drivers should take the following steps to improve their visibility.
Standard headlamps with reduced light output (left) and Philips X-treme Vision bulbs with increased brightness and distance (right). filament fatigue, and general usage. The result is dim bulbs that make it difficult for motorists young and old to see when driving at twilight and at night, when a driver's visual acuity is naturally reduced by 70 percent. Drivers should pay attention to how their headlights are performing, replacing any bulbs that are no longer providing adequate light.
· Don't just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be replaced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenancesavvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs when replacing them. Industry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every two years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle's lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking with the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. The Philips Upgrade Headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor weather, dimly lit roads, aging head-
· Keep wiper blades fresh. Wiper blades should be changed every three months, as they can become brittle over time and, depending on their frequency of use, can wear out, especially on older vehicles with pitting on the windshield. When inspecting the wiper blades, remember to inspect your windshield washer as well, making sure that the washers are operating effectively and that the washer fluid basin has been refilled.

Kenneth and Shirley Foster, owners of Ken-Mar Furniture and Shirley’s Bridal, have a long history in Artesia, NM. Many don’t know that Ken pitched in pro ball for a while with Big Joe Bauman. Shirley recalls that she was the best base runner back then, chasing Ken for five years until she finally caught him! The Fosters married in 1957, and went from farming to furniture when they bought the business from Marshall Belshe (thus the name Ken-Mar) in 1975. They have left a wonderful legacy of quality and integrity in business ever since, with several employees having 22 to 34 years longevity in the business. Shirley started Shirley’s Bridal in response to a need she saw in the community in the late 70’s. Both have a beautiful legacy that includes one daughter and four granddaughters. When asked what was next for Ken-Mar, both replied without hesitation, “Don’t ask us to retire! We’re still going strong!”

A PERMANENT SOLUTION TO FOUNDATION PROBLEMS
Get Your Car Ready For Winter Roads (NAPS)—There are a few things you need to do to keep yourself and your precious cargo— kids, friends, pets—safe on snow, ice, slush, black ice and wet roads. Safety on the road is important all year-round, but winter weather calls for extra caution behind the wheel. That’s why many auto safety experts urge motorists to keep road safety at the top of their checklists this winter and switch to tires specifically designed for cold weather driving. “Every aspect of a winter tire has been engineered to provide the best performance in winter conditions and temperature fluctuations while maintaining traction on any surface,” said Mark Marrufo of Discount Tire. “Keeping your family safe in every aspect of life is your priority. It is our priority to keep you, your family and your passengers safe while on the road.” At 45 degrees, vehicles often lose their ability to brake and turn well because of the rubber compound found in all-season tires. That compound begins to gradually harden when temps dip below 45 degrees, meaning de creased road traction and less grip. What’s more, snow and ice often pile up in the tire grooves on all-season tires. Winter tires, on the other hand, are made with higher-silica compounds. This allows the tire to deliver much better traction, which reduces skidding and im proves braking. In fact, in temperatures below 45 degrees, winter tires can provide 25 to 50 percent more traction than all-season tires. Two new tires for this winter that use this technology are the Bridgestone WS80 and Michelin X-Ice Xi3. In addition, specialized tread design, which includes thousands of very SUNDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2014

Replace your all-season tires with winter tires for driving in temperatures of 45 degrees or below. Make sure to replace all four tires to avoid an unsafe traction mismatch. 2. Don’t forget the wheels when switching to winter tires. Having a set of wheels specifically for your set of winter tires will save money in the long run. 3. Check tire pressure regularly and don’t forget the spare. Underinflated or overinflated tires may result in poor handling, uneven tread wear and poor fuel consumption. 4. Rotate your tires at least every 5,000 miles or earlier if irregular or uneven wear develops. 5. Make sure the tire shop that gets your tires ready for cold temperatures properly torques the lug nuts to the specifications for your vehicle. If you’re not sure if you need winter tires, you can get a free safety inspection at any Discount Tire location. Get Your Outdoor Power Equipment Ready For Winter (And Spring) (NAPS)—How well your outdoor power equipment works the next time you need it could depend on how you winterize and store it. Here are hints that can help: Do your winterization tasks in a safe work zone. Before you start, set up a safe work zone. Work only in a well-ventilated area that is away from heat sources, sparks or flames. Collect your outdoor power equipment that you intend to store. This might include a lawn mower, generator, string trimmer, chain saw, edger, power washer, blower, chipper, splitter or other tool that uses a small engine to do outdoor work. Read the owner ’s manual. Always consult your owner’s manual for directions on how to properly winterize and store your equipment. If you can’t find your manual, check the manufacturer’s website. Be safe. Before servicing or repairing any outdoor power equipment, disconnect the spark plug and battery cables. Wear safety glasses and gloves to protect against harmful chemicals and debris. Drain the fuel. Stored equipment should not have fuel in its tank. Many fuels today contain ethanol, which absorbs water and may phase separate, causing operating problems. If there is fuel in the tank, remove what remains. Run the engine until it stops. Store leftover fuel properly. Gasoline should be stored no more than 30 days without being treated with a fuel stabilizer. Use PAGE 8

Always keep fuel out of the reach of children and away from heat sources or flames. Check and clean your equipment. Check for loose belts or missing or damaged guards. Check and tighten all screws and nuts. Grass, leaves and dirt that have accumulated on the equipment should be removed. Lubricate, sharpen and charge as needed. Check the oil level and blade condition. Change the oil now if needed. Get your lawn mower blade sharpened so it will be ready for spring. Inspect the spark plug, replace it and add clean engine oil. Check the air filter and clean or replace as needed. If your equipment has a removable battery, take it out and store it in a warm spot. If you have a battery charger, you may want to charge the battery before storing. Take your equipment in for s e r v i c i n g i f n e e d e d . A busy lawn care season may have left FALL HOME & AUTO
your equipment worn and in need of repair. The winter season is when repair shops are the least busy, so if your equipment needs a tune-up or additional servicing, now is a good time to take it in. Find a safe storage space. Store your equipment away from pool chemicals, cleaners or fertilizers—anything that could cause corrosion from spills. Your storage area should be cool and dry, and your equipment should be out of the reach of children and pets. Properly store your supplies. Avoid spills in your storage space by storing your lawn care and outdoor supplies properly. Leftover lawn care materials should be stored in sealed containers, so pests such as rodents are not drawn to your storage space. Find your winter equipment and place it in an accessible location. Dig out the snow shovels, snowblowers or throwers, scrapers, ice melt or rock salt. If you are out of winter supplies, now can be a good time to stock up before you need them. Place your winter equipment and supplies in an accessible location. “Well-maintained equipment will last longer and save consumers money. Winterizing and storing outdoor power equipment properly over the winter means that when spring arrives, your equipment will be ready,” ex plained Kris Kiser, president and CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), an international trade association representing power equipment, small engine, and utility vehicle manufacturers and suppliers. How to prevent winter soil erosion
Acres upon acres of landscape may be under siege this winter, and not by foraging animals looking for food. Soil erosion is a significant problem when the temperatures dip, as snowstorms and wind can blow unprotected soil away. What's more, when warmer weather returns, even more soil may erode from spring melt and runoff.
Unprotected soil that is exposed to wet and windy weather can quickly deteriorate. Especially harsh winter weather can cause soil to break down, subjecting the soil to erosive forces. Soil loss is wasteful and can compromise landscapes, leaving lawns and gardens susceptible to further damage. To combat poorly performing gardens, landscapers may have to rely more heavily on chemical fertilizers and supplements, neither of which is an especially eco-friendly alternative.
Some people see gardening as a spring and summer activity. However, by making gardening a year-round effort - and choosing plants for all seasons - homeowners can protect landscapes and provide hardy habitats for wildlife.

Another solution is to use leaves and other compost matter to cover naked soil until planting resumes. The compost will be heavy enough to stay in place and will add healthy soil nutrients, including potassium, phosphorous and nitrogen, as it decomposes. Place a breathable soil fabric on the compost to help slow decomposition. Soil fabric also can be used elsewhere to protect soil and plants where thick layers of compost may not be practical.
Speak with a landscaping professional about which plants are hardy enough to survive through the fall and winter seasons. Certain ornamental bushes and shrubs can thrive in colder temperatures. Root vegetables, such as carrots and potatoes, are viable in the winter months. Many people plant flower bulbs in early winter to protect the soil and to enjoy vibrant color upon the arrival of spring. Some home landscapers and gardeners may overlook the importance of preIf your goal is to plant a placeholder for spring crops or plants, cover plants, such venting soil erosion during the winter. as rye, are an ideal winter protection But preventing such erosion can protect crop. How to treat driveway stains
A driveway is one of the first things guests see when visiting a home. Taking up a good portion of the front acreage of the home, a driveway can add visual appeal to the property. But when driveways are stained, cracked or pitted, they become eyesores that can rob a home of its curb appeal. Concrete driveways are notorious for absorbing stains. Anything from automotive fluids to fallen leaves can affect the appearance of a concrete driveway. And while cleaning the driveway can take a little effort, the end result is well worth the effort.
Asphalt driveways may not show stains as visibly as concrete driveways, but that does not mean they cannot benefit from some TLC. The following cleaning methods can give a tired or dirty driveway a good-as-new look. Pressure washing
Pressure washing machines can be used to remove ground-in stains from driveways. The power of the streaming water and a combination of mild cleanser may be able to remove a number of stains, including those from leaves, mold, spills, dirt, fungus, and bird droppings.
Proceed with caution when using pressure washers, as they can be powerful tools. If the nozzle is set incorrectly, it is quite easy to pit out portions of the driveway or create a streaky look. Widen the spray and pass over each area several times to remove ground-in stains. Pressure washers may come equipped with various attachments to make the process easier and eliminate stripping. Beginners may want to consider an attachment to make the job less arduous. A rotary turbo nozzle will focus the water in a fine stream but constantly rotate that stream to cover a wider area. A water broom will

Laundry detergent and dish soap also can break through some greasy stains. Try making a solution of water and the detergent of choice. Use a stiff-bristle broom to work the cleanser into the stained driveway, then rinse away the suds with a hose. Repeat until the stains have lifted. Commercial products
Auto supply and paint stores typically sell driveway cleaners. Always read the manufacturers' instructions and guidelines prior to purchase to determine if the product will work to remove your driveway stains. Some products may be too harsh to use on asphalt, which is more malleable and porous than concrete and paver driveways.
