Welcome to the Roswell Filmfest and Cosmicon Welcome to Roswell, the hub of southeastern New Mexico and the UFO Capital of the world! Boasting as the sight of Robert H. Goddard’s primary rocketry research, Roswell is continuously exploring the mysteries of the world beyond. Trever has been actively involved in photography, advertising, film and television in New Mexico for over ten years and established a film program in Roswell that serves as a training ground for future members of IATSE, a NM film union. Trever has also served as a local production coordinator for many films and television crews that have come through Roswell, utilizing the program that he created at Eastern New Mexico Uni-
versity – Roswell, and has worked in various capacities with a number of companies, such as Lion’s Gate™, Paramount, ABC Family, Discovery Channel and NBC, and produced numerous projects for various companies such as ESPN, Discovery, the State of New Mexico and the History Channel. He has also produced several independent features filmed in Southern New Mexico, such as Ilegales, Last Stop (starring Mena Suvari and Brian Austin Green) and Coyote County Loser, which won “Best Comedy” at the Telluride Film Festival, Roswell FM, and The Rambler, which was showcased at the Sundance Film Festival and recently released to theaters. The Roswell Cosmicon was designed to complement the Sci-Fi Film Festival with something for everyone in three packed days of fun, fantasy and learning. What better place for viewing Sci-Fi films than Roswell, the UFO Capital of the world! This year the Roswell Cosmicon will be held in conjunction with the UFO Festival. We hope that your stay here will be comfortable and enjoyable, and reveal to you the charm of southeastern New Mexico, specifically Roswell. Buckle your seat belt and prepared for a multiday, out of this world journey! Cheers!,

The Digital Shootout
Filmmakers compete for the awards given out at the Red Carpet Gala
By Randal Seyler Record Staff Writer
Local filmmaker Donovan Fulkerson returns to the Roswell Film Fest and Conference competition this year with his short film, “Singularita.” Fulkerson describes “Singularita” as a sci-fi mystery, filmed in a style similar to “Blade Runner.” “We are doing an homage to the greatest science fiction film of all time,” he said. The crew has completed one day of shooting for the 13 minute competition film, and have two and a half days left to shoot, but Fulkerson expects to be ready in time for the film contestʼs June 28 deadline. “Weʼre filming here in Roswell,” Fulkerson said, but he did not want to give away the exact location. “Singularita” is one of two local screenplays chosen by the competiton for production, and two other films are being produced elsewhere in the country, Fulkerson said. In 2011, Fulkerson and his wife founded Relicwood Media, a company that provides photography, design and film products, according to Fulkersonʼs website, donovanfulkerson.com. He is author of the published book, “Sinʼs Cure – No More Picking Fruit, Destroying The Root.” He also has a number of film credits, including:
“Subject 413” Short Film – actor; “The Roswell Project” – associate producer and actor; “Tailed” film series – producer, director, writer, actor. He serves on the RFC Committee and Leadership Roswell Alumni Association boards. This is Fulkersonʼs third year to participate in the Roswell festival as a contestant, he said. He was directing the last two years, so this year he is both acting and producing. “Itʼs good to be back on the acting side this year,” he said. Fulkersonʼs current project, “Singularita,” is set in the future, where a high-level tech guru who has been working on top secret material is found dead. “The story involves chasing after a prime susSee SHOOTOUT on page 10

pect to find out what happened,” Fulkerson said. Fulkerson co-wrote the screenplay from an original story by Boyd Barrett. “Boyd asked if his story was selected would I work on the production,” Fulkerson said. Last year, Fulkersonʼs film “Tailed” won five awards at the Roswell Film Festival, including best picture and audience choice last year. “SingulaRita” is being produced by Relicwood Media production company and Fulkerson is codirecting with Lynetta Zuber since Fulkerson is also acting in the film. The lead characters in the film are being played by Sara Megan Roe, Peter Powell and Fulkerson. Once the film is completed, it can also be entered in other contests, Fulkerson said. “ʻTailedʼ got selected to Taos Short Film Festival and it did really well up there,” Fulkerson said. “My hope would be to submit “SingulaRita” to festivals over the year to get attention, but I donʼt want to take away from this festival,” Fulkerson said. “Itʼs an honor to be a part of the Roswell festival.” The competition will feature the submitted films at the Red Carpet Gala on Saturday, June 28.

UFOs invade Roswell
With the help of an augmented reality app, the Roswell Filmfest and Cosmicon bring UFOs to Roswell
P
eople in Roswell have begun to participate in an augmented reality where they can interact with UFOs in the sky as well as phantom robot creatures that inhabit a few public places around town. Downloading an app for any iOS or android device has given people the ability to take selfies in front of many Roswell buildings that have hidden UFOs. James Airhart explains, "Roswell has such great stories about the UFO. People visiting Roswell want to share in that story, so we are giving them the opportunity to get on their Facebook or twitter and take a selfie. They can get excited and say, 'Hey, look! We are in Roswell!' while there is a UFO hovering above them in the background. "I want to give people that come to Roswell more than what Roswell has to offer. They come here thinking, 'Maybe I'll see a UFO.' However, with this, they can have fun with it. It is fun and interactive. "You download the app, you subscribe to the channel, and you scan the map. Then the map shows where they can go and see the UFOs. We want everyone to find these UFOs and share on facebook. It gives people the opportunity to see a real UFO. It looks like a real UFO, hovering over these buildings. It is a fun and interactive experience." This is not the first time Airhart has put together an interactive experience like this. Two years ago, he was involved in the Roswell Experience. In some ways, this may turn out to be act two for that project, which had people finding crop circles and going on adventures through Roswell in the quest to find aliens. Airhart said that this takes much of what he learned from creating the Roswell Experience. He explained, "The Roswell Experience involved places, crop circles, radio, print media and interactive texting. It was very complicated. This is refined, anyone that has an iPhone or android device can use it and make it work. "Initially, this was going to involve the same story from the Roswell Experience. And it might still, if we get people to start playing around with the locations and fol-
low the hashtags that we set up. We can start adding in elements of the story, but it requires participation. "This one is more organized. It is all about entertainment, UFOs and family fun. You have to go to all the locations to take pictures of all the UFOs, but it is no longer a game experience like the Roswell Experience was. The reason we decided to remove the game experience is because this is really new technology. We didn't want people to be trying to win a game based on unproven technology. After we see how it works this year, we may be able to go bigger and better next year." "The map is one way that people can get involved. It will have instruction. We will also have stickers at different locations around town that tells you how to see that particular interactive element or augmented reality at that location. Also, if people are on instagram or twitter, they can follow the hashtag cosmicon2014. "Once people start using it more, it will make more sense. It is kind of like an evolution of the QR Code. "Augmented reality is using your cellphone, smartphone, computers and technology to create a hybrid way of interacting with the world. "It is traditional media, print, and it is online. The idea was some fun interactive way of getting people involved. Sharing online with social media, social networks, facebook, twitter or instagram. "What I try to do is innovate. It is an innovative approach to advertising the Cosmicon and the Filmfest. It is creating some fun and excitement. "I feel like our target market is the younger generation because they are the ones that are savy with this type of technology. "It is kind of a big experiment to see what is going to happen. We will see what kind of buzz will be created. "The best way that this works is when people share it, and other people then do it, and you get this wave of interaction." If you are interested in finding UFOs, pull the map out of this guide and explore Roswell!

Garrett Wang Cosmicon Special Guest
Born in Riverside, California to Chinese immigrant parents, Garrett Wang (pronounced Wong) spent his formative years on the move, living in Indiana, Bermuda and Tennessee. He moved to Los Angeles to attend UCLA where he majored in East Asian Studies and minored in theater. He was especially proud of his portrayal of Michio Tanaka in Wakako YamauchiĘźs play "12-1-A," which commemorated the 50th anniversary of the wrongful internment of Japanese American civilians during World War II. In his first stage performance outside of UCLA, Garrett garnered critical acclaim as the lead in Chay Yew's controversial play, "Porcelain." For five years, Garrett focused on theater and attempted to convince his Asian parents and relatives that acting was a viable profession as opposed to becoming a Doctor as he had originally planned since eighth grade. With his parents fi-
nally on his side, he signed with his first talent agent in 1993. Within a year he landed his first speaking role, guest starring on the first episode of the ABC sitcom "All American Girl" starring comedienne Margaret Cho. Three months later, Wang was cast in the role of Harry Kim on "Star Trek Voyager." In addition to being a series regular on Voyager, Garrett was named as one of People Magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People as well as one of E! Channel's "20 Coolest Bachelors." Since 2005, Garrett has taken an extended break from Hollywood. With the exception of the occasional cameo appearance in random indie projects such as the comedy “Unbelievable, Garrett has been focused on traveling the world, working behind the scenes at Dragon*Con, designing scifi/fantasy inspired tee-shirts and relishing the role of an avid NFL Football fan.

The Cosmicon
By Shannon Seyler Special to the Record
For the finest in intergalactic entertainment, look no further than the Roswell Cosmicon. Whether you're into sci-fi, fantasy, animation, comics, collectibles, gaming, manga, cosplay or steampunk, you'll find it all at the Cosmicon. This year's convention is being held at the Roswell Mall on the weekend of July 4-5. The Cosmicon runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days, and will coincide with the Roswell UFO Festival. Admission is free, so gather up your family and friends and blast off to the Cosmicon for an otherworldly good time. The Cosmicon will be offering plenty of opportunities for cosplay. Cosplay, a blend of the words "costume" and "play," has skyrocketed in popularity. At the Cosmicon, visitors will have a chance to create and publicly model their own costumes, engage in a bit of roleplaying, or watch as cosplayers assume the identities of characters from popular media. Cosplayers often emulate characters from comics, films,
video games, manga, anime and other pop culture media, in addition to creating original characters. The Cosmicon will have a cosplay contest, parade and awards, in addition to cosplay workshops. The parade and awards ceremony will be held on Friday at 3 p.m. Another highlight of the convention will be vendors offering sci-fi and fantasy related art, collectibles, comics and other sought-after memorabilia. But as Roswell Filmfest and Cosmicon coordinator Elaine Mayfield explains, "This is different from a generalized vendor show. There's a strong emphasis upon science fiction and fantasy here, especially with the Cosmicon occurring in conjunction with the Roswell UFO Festival." Every convention has its featured guests, and Cosmicon is proud to welcome celebrity guest Garrett Wang, the actor who portrayed Ensign Harry Kim in "Star Trek: Voyager." He has also appeared in "Star Trek: Of Gods and Men", "Stargate SG-1," "The Auteur Theory," "Into the West" and other programs and productions.

He'll be offering autograph signings and photo opportunities. "Another star of this year's convention won't be a person," Mayfield jokes, "but the air conditioning system." At a past convention, the air conditioning failed. Summer in Roswell isn't the most welcome time for A/C failures, especially when trying to comfortably accommodate a crowd, but this year, attendees can chill out in air-conditioned splendor. This convention will offer quality entertainment for young and old alike. Children will be treated to photo opportunities with popular costumed characters. Speaking of photo ops, "Doctor Who" fans can pose with a replica of the TARDIS, the Doctor's legendary time machine. There will be three workshops available for attendees. One workshop, hosted by Third Triumvirate Studios — an independent film startup from Albuquerque — will focus on X-Men, the hugely popular Marvel Comics franchise. There are also two cosplay workshops scheduled, including a cosplay design workshop with Jerrod Olive, and a steampunk cosplay seminar with Tony Gage and Peter Powell.
Gaming fans will be pleased to find tabletop, computer and card gaming opportunities at Cosmicon, including Yu-Gi-Oh! gaming — another franchise that has shifted in X-Men fash-

ion, moving from manga to anime to a popular collectible card game format. The Cosmicon gaming schedule features free play from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, and tournament gaming from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. For even further entertainment, the Roswell Filmfest and Cosmicon will be sponsoring a showing of the film "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" on July 3 at 9 p.m. on the lawn of the Roswell Convention and Civic Center as part of Main Street Roswell's Summer Family Movies series. Whether you're planning to show up in costume, expand your comic collection, stop by for a photo op, attend a workshop, get your game on, or just stroll through as a casual observer, come check out the Cosmicon for two days of unparalleled entertainment.
