2015 Character Counts
All the middle schools and high schools in Chaves County were asked to pick two student athletes, a boy and a girl, who most represented the Six Pillars of Character Counts. Two college athletes from the New Mexico Military Institute also were selected.
Berrendo Middle School Gateway Christian School Future education plans: I would like to become a vet. I plan to attend the University of Oregon. Recommended by: Administration and coaching staff. Recommended for: Bailey’s actions at school and sporting events exemplify the spirit of the Character Counts program and the expectations of a Bulldog sports person. We are fortunate to have had her at Berrendo during these middle school years.
Baily Beene and Ethan Valenzula Bailey Beene — eighth grade Awards: Character Counts, attendance, Honor Roll School activities: Honor Society, volleyball, basketball, soccer and track Community involvement: CCD (church), assistant
Ethan Valenzula — eighth grade. Community involvement: Ethan has always been active in a variety of youth sports. Future education plans: I plan to go to high school and attend college at Oregon. Recommended by: Administration and coaching staff. Recommended for: Ethan approaches sports and academics with equal effort. The Berrendo Bulldogs are well represented by Ethan. We are proud to have and him at our school.

years and can confidently say she is the epitome of a student athlete that displays great character. She is flexible when the need arises, dependable at any given moment, dedicated and conscientious to her teams needs. She serves as an excellent role model for her peers. All Saints Catholic School Siana Garcia always exhibited character both in school, personal life, and on the sports field. She is caring, responsible and respects her coaches and teammates. She would give her best for any for event she was entered. She improved every week while never missing practice or a meet. Her teammates trusted her to set an example. Xavier Fresquez is a very unusual young man. You wouldn’t think he was a
track star by looking at him but because he was very coachable and listened he ended up setting several school records. He was very fair with his teammates. He ran a relay leg to enable his teammates to enter the relays. He excelled in shot put and discus. Responsibility was one his greatest strengths as he never missed practice or a chance to give his best. Xavier is an athlete of character.

Jesus Molina — eighth grade. Awards: Jesus received the most improved play for 8. School activities: Jesus participates in all sports at Mt. View. He plays football, basketball, track and soccer. He also serves as a very responsible teachers aide. Community involvement: Jesus is an active member of his local church participating in catechism and other church affiliated events. Future education plans: Plans to attend college, but is unsure of where and what. Recommended by: Coach Brent Clay Recommended for: Jesus has attended Mountain View for three years. In his time here, Jesus has suffered almost unbearable pain with the death of his near and dear sister. For years, his sister was in and out of hospitals, combating a very rare and aggressive form of cancer. In spite of his trials, he has always managed to be in school, participating in all activities and display all pillars of character. Even after the loss of his sister, Jesus continued and continues to this day to strive for excellence in all he does. He not only is a wonderful student athlete of character, he is also an overcomer.

She has participated in HS Cross Country, HS softball, MS volleyball, basketball and track. Community involvement: Mikenzey is an active member of her local church, enjoys assisting her younger brother has he copes with a potentially life threatening medical conditon. Future education plans: Plans to attend college, but is unsure of where and what. Recommended by: Coach Brent Clay Recommended for: Mikenzey has always been a very active student athlete, always displaying the pillars of character. She is trusting, attentive, honest, respectful, responsible and always eager to serve. She also has been very resilient in coping with her younger brother’s medical condition.

Recommended by: Coach Foust Recommended for: Maleka is a very positive and upbeat individual. She works hard to do her best in everything in which she is involved. Maleka is a great role model for her peers and represents our school very well.

Future education plans: I would like to attend college at Eastern New Mexico University. I plan to major in Animal and Dairy Science, so that I can become a veterinarian. Recommended by: Coach Monica Morales. Recommended for: Rheawna is an excellent student and does her best at everything in which she participates. She is a great role model for her peers. Rheawna is a leader in our school and works to always do her best.
Martin Flores Ñ eighth grade. Awards: A-Honor Roll, A-B Honor Roll, Character Counts Student of the Month School activities: football, basketball, track, cross country, and FFA. Future education plans: I plan to graduate from high school and attend college at UCLA and become an engineer. I would like to play basketball in college someday as well. Paige Estrada Paige Estrada — grade 8th, Mesa Middle School Awards: A/B Honor roll, Award of Excellence in Reading and Math on
NMSBA School activities: volleyball, basketball, cheerleading, RHS JV softball, advanced band and percussion ensemble Community involvement: Drumming for Hope Future education plans: Paige plans on attending Baylor University, where she will get her Bachelor degree in Biology. She then plans continuing her education to become a Physical Therapist. Recommended by: Michelle Tivis and Laura Rivera Recommended for: Paige represents what a student athlete should be. She works hard in every sport or activity that she is involved in, while maintaining her responsibilities in the classroom. On or off the court Paige exhibits excellent sportsmanship and character. She helps her teammates when they need it and realizes that a team is only as strong as the weakest player. Paige always has a positive attitude and encourages her teammates to perform at their highest potential. She has always represented Mesa Middle School in a positive light and has set the bar high the student athletes who will follow. Edward Lerma — eighth grade. Awards: Approvement Award for NMSBA testing. School activities: football, basketball, school student ambassador. Future education plans: He plans on going to Goddard High School and than attend college and become a Anesthesiologist. Recommended by: Danny Kasuboski. Recommended for: Edward was one of the hardest working and dedicated football players I have worked with. He was always on time and ready to play. Edward would also step up and ask to go in and play positions that he has never played or practiced for.

Goddard High School Marcus Trujillo — 12th grade. Awards: Scholastic letterman (GPA 3.5 or higher), Character Counts (wrestling), five year varsity letterman (wrestling and track), all district (cross country, wrestling, track, football), State Championship (wrestling and football). School activities: Honor Society, cross country, wrestling, track, football (freshman and sophomore). Community involvement: Alter server at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, volunteer at Senior Olympic and Roswell Runners Club. Future education plans: Attend Arizona State University, major in Applied Biological Sciences to become a Physicians Assistant. Recommended by: Dennis Montanez. Recommended for: Marcus is a true reflection and example of what every parent wants their son to become. He is a young man of honor and respect. Marcus is a leader at Goddard and his peers can trust his decisions without any reservations. His ability to gain the trust of all stake holders at Goddard High make him the perfect candidate for Character Counts awarded. It is with extreme honor that Marcus be awarded the Character Counts recipient for Goddard High School.
Mande Lee Hudson — 12th grade. Awards: Student of the Month-Roswell Sertoma, top 10 of Southeast Region— officials, top MESA student Southeast Region, 3.5 GPA or higher, all state volleyball. School activities: MESA- President, Honor Society- Secretary, varsity volleyball, varsity track. Community involvement: Service learning through volleyball and MESA, Honor Society, back pack group, can food drive, egg hunts, angel tree, Buddy Walk, science night (Del Norte), Senior Olympics Future education plans: Go to Texas Tech and pursue a major in Mechanical Engineering, also major in Biology. Recommended by: Dennis Montanez Recommended for: Mande epitomizes what every student athlete should strive to become. She is the type of person that puts others needs and interests in front of her own. Mande is respected by her peers, teachers, and administrators at Goddard High. She represents and lives her life in a manner that reflects all the pillars of the Character Counts program. Chris Foster — college sophomore. Awards: WJCAC Player of the Week, named to Superintendent’s list (semester GPA 3.5 or above with an ‘A’ grade in deportment) twice, name to Dean’s List (semester GPA 3.25 or above with an ‘A’ grade in deportment) once. School activities: second year as a starter on the NMMI Bronco baseball team, member of the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society. Community involvement: As a high-ranking member of the NMMI Corps of Cadets (Sergeant Major in charge of NMMI’s Alpha, Bravo, Charlie and HQ troops), Mr. Foster helps organize and facilitate just about every community service event attended by the NMMI Corps of Cadets, such as the Walk for Cancer, the Bataan Death March Memorial, Keep Roswell Beautiful Clean-up Days, etc. He also uses his off time in the summers providing one-on-one baseball coaching and mentorship to Little-League-aged players. Future education plans: Mr. Foster hasn’t decided on a four—year school as of yet (still waiting on possible scholarship offers for baseball), but he has decided to make the profession of Nursing his college major. He hopes to join the United States Navy upon graduation and serve as an emergency nurse. Recommended by: NMMI Sports Information Director Geoff Gunn and Head Bronco Baseball Coach Chris Cook. Recommended for: Cadet Foster attained his high rank in the command chain of the NMMI Corps of Cadets because of his excellent ‘can-do’ attitude, and his ability to lead and teach others. The school’s motto is “Duty, Honor, and Achievement” and Mr. Foster exemplifies this as a cadet, as a student, and as an athlete.
Sheanna Torio — college sophomore Awards: 2014 WJCAC all-conference team selection, named to Superintendent’s List (semester GPA 3.5 or above with an ‘A’ grade in deportment) twice, name to Commandant’s List (semester GPA 3.25 or above with a ‘B’ grade in deportment) once. School activities: second year as a member of the Bronco volleyball team. Ms. Torio didn’t get a lot of playing time as a freshman, but shone as a sophomore, starting in the libero position and finishing the season No. 1 in the conference in digs with 473. Member of the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society. Community involvement: Volunteer at the North Texas Food Bank in her hometown of Dallas during the summers. Organizer and participant for the past two NMMI Cadet Cancer Walks. Future education plans: Ms. Torio is undecided as of yet on a four-year college, but she hopes to continue to play volleyball at the next level. She plans on studying psychology as preparation for a career in counseling. Recommended by: NMMI Sports Information Director Geoff Gunn and Bronco Volleyball Head coach Shelby Forchtner Recommended for: In just two years at NMMI, cadet Torio has been promoted up through the ranks to Second Lieutenant, making her one of the top 30 ranking cadets on campus. She has attained that rank and position by being responsible and proving that she can teach as well as lead. She’s currently the leader of Echo Troop’s high school platoon, where her assignment is to instruct, guide and correct the 20 cadets under her command.
Amira Hindi — grade 12th, NMMI Awards: Has gone to state competition over the past 4 year and has done very well, 2nd in National Championship in the Pentathlon (youth B 2013), 3rd in National Championship in the Pentathlon (youth A 2014), team MVP for the past 2 years in track, team MVP for the past 3 years in Cross Country, team most inspirational player in swimming School activities: Member of Pentathlon Club at NMMI Community involvement: She stays very active in her local church and stays busy with Pentathlon club. Future education plans: Denver College in Colorado Springs next year. Has been awarded a number of different scholarships based off her grades and performance both inside the classroom and outside. Has a Cumulative 3.78 which is very impressive. Recommended by: Randy Montoya Recommended for: Ms. Hindi has spent her entire high school career here at NMMI. As mentioned above, she currently has a 3.78 cumulative GPA and for any school, that’s a good high school career, but even more so here at NMMI. Amira is very involved in the CORP of NMMI and is a 1 Sergeant. She has been a dream for any coach to coach and works very hard in everything that she does. She is a great leader, role model, and her team mates look up to her. Its an honor to nominate Ms. Amira Hindi.

He is a multi-sport athlete and with all the sports he has played he still maintains a 3.66 Cumulative GPA. He does very well in our CORP of cadets with a rank of Sergeant Major. He not only leads by example he leads vocally. Brandon is usually the first one on the field and one of the last ones off the field. Brandon is a very coachable player and understands that it takes hard work to be successful. Brandon exhibits all six pillars of character. He is a mentor to the younger players and helps others on the ball field. Brandon is a very good student in class and has never been a problem for any of his teachers. Lake Arthur School Alejandro Rubio — sixth grade. Awards: Jump Rope for Heart. School activities: Basketball and track, varsity football manager since 5th grade. Community involvement: Church, community clean up for six years. Future education plans: Game Designer in Las Cruces. Recommended by: Jose Cruz Porras Recommended for: Outgoing individual, goes out of his way to include others and make them feel welcome. He’s a very bright student and holds himself to very high standards.
