By Timothy P. Howsare Record Editor Gateway Christian School has been a strong performer in the past four years, making it to the semifinals last year and winning state in the three years previous to last year. “We took a pretty good beating from Logan, they had a pretty good team and it wasn’t our best game,” head coach Shaun Wigley said of last season’s finale. “We had a little bit of youth and inexperience showed up. I enjoyed the effort they

gave us last year worked hard and the team gave us good season.” Wigley said with hard work, this year’s squad can once again make it to the playoffs. “We need to get better early, game by game, and make it to the playoffs, “Wigley said. “We will realign our goals and see what we can do from there.” Justin Reynolds, who as a freshman played quarterback last year, returns to that position this season. “Physically he has matured and is more

comfortable running offense,” Wigley said. “We went five years from having juniors and seniors as quarterback. You can’t make up for that experience, but he is handling it well and looking for some growth.” Besides Justin, Wigley said other key players are senior Dominic La Volpa, who defensively will play middle lineback and tackle and offensively will play full back; senior James Longmire, who offensively will play runnning back See GATEWAY, Page 7

New Dexter coach looks to build on winning tradition By AJ Dickman Vistas Editor There’s a new sheriff in Dexter and with plenty of returning talent on both sides of the ball, the Demons look to improve on their 8-4 record from 2014 and compete for the state 3A title. “We’ve had a great twoa-days,” said new head coach Kevin Graham. “We’ve got about 48 kids out here and they have worked extremely hard, I couldn’t ask for more.” Dexter made it to the semi-finals last year, falling to district rival Eunice 44-14. District 4 will once again be tough, with Texico, Eunice and Dexter in the nmpreps.com preseason top 10 for Class 3A. Graham said he is excited to carry on the winning tradition established by the coaching staff he inherited. “The foundation of it all has been the assistant coaches that were already here,” he said. “They had things in place and we’ve just continued on and enhanced things a bit. I’ve really got the greatest coaching staff in the world.”

Along with returning coaches, the Demons bring back several key leaders from the 2014 squad, including senior quarterback/outside linebacker Dominic Lomeli and senior wide receivers/defensive backs Mario Contreras and Brandon Silvas. “I can’t say enough about (Dominic). He’s a great leader and a tremendous young man,” said Graham. “He has bought into the new system 100 percent from day one and the younger players look up to him.” Graham said his playbook will take advantage of the Demons’ talented backfield. “We will primarily line up in the I, but we’ll call it a multiple-I formation, because we can get in one back, no back, use some motion,” he said. “We like staying in the I, feeding the ball to that tailback, fullback and quarterback. That tailback is Gabino Rodriguez and he’s a dandy.” The Demons season will start off with a stiff test when Hatch Valley visits Dexter on Aug. 28. “That’s a 4A school,

they made it to the semi-finals last year and from what we hear, they have a lot of players coming back so it will be a great challenge early,” Graham said. “We can’t wait for them to get here.” When asked about the long-standing rivalry with the nearby Hagerman Bobcats, Graham said he wants his players taking the season one week at a See DEXTER, Page 7

Rockets hoping to continue dynasty By Paul lessard record corresPondent ItÕ s a bold statement to say that a team is a dynasty Ð especially at the high school level Ð but there is one defining statistic that supports that claim when it comes to Goddard football. They are the only team in the state to make it at least to the semi-final round every year for the last 10 years. Head coach Mike Whalen believes that that streak will continue with the 2015 season. Ò Last year, I had only about eight players and they all had to go both sides of the ball,Ó stated Whalen, entering his second season as the head coach. Ò They were beat to a pulp and I knew that was going to happen, but we didnÕ t have a lot of kids out.Ó That is all changing this year as the Rockets feature a good mixture of past players and some new talent. Ò This year we have more kids out Ð a little over 50 kids. We still donÕ t have what the other schools have in this area doÉ Artesia will have a hundred and something, Clovis will have a hundred and somethingÉ Carlsbad, Hobbs, all the teams we play will have over 100. We demand a lot out of those 50 kids and right now IÕ m happy

with what they are doing.Ó Ò Last year was a good season,Ó continued Coach Whalen, Ò but anything less than a state championship usually doesnÕ t set well with the kids.Ó The 2014 season ended on a sour note as they fell to eventual state champ Artesia 42-41 in the semi-final round. This year looks to get the Rockets back into the state title game. Coach Whalen believes the goal of a state championship is attainable. Ò We are going to have to play hard and weÕ re going to have to play tough. WeÕ re not big and weÕ re not fast, but we do have a lot of kids that have been playing a position for one or two years now so they are pretty darn salty right now.Ó It appears that the offense Ð especially the skill positions are Ð is going to be really exciting and are ahead of themselves in terms of development. Ò WeÕ ve got four excellent running backs and weÕ ll probably start off with Luke Gutierrez and Devin Quiroz and weÕ ve got three quarterbacks. IÕ d like to see Cameron (Stevenson) start with Lukas at a running back and Devin at a running back or wing.Ó The Rockets have a plethora of linemen looking to block for those three in

the run-heavy offense that Goddard employs. The line will be led by senior Tony Salvarrey who Ò is a beastÓ according to Whalen. Ò If that kid doesnÕ t make the all-star team, (it will be a shame). Both sides of the ball, that kid will kill you.Ó Along with Salvarrey look for big years from Misael Zaragosa at left tackle, Sam Sartain at center and senior James Testorff. Ò Just all the way down the line, we have good lineman. WeÕ ve got kids in there and theyÕ re working their butts off. IÕ m happy with the offense.Ó Defensively, the Rockets look to continue with their trademark physical play. The leader will be returning linebacker Ethan Featherstone. A lot of players have game experience from the 2014 season so it looks like the Rockets will be set to compliment See GODDARD, Page 7

players have game experience from the 2014 season so it looks like the Rockets will be set to compliment Featherstone. “Along with Featherstone at mike backer, we have Javier Barraza – just a junior – and I’m really happy with his progress,” stated Whalen. At defensive end, look for Gaylan Young, returning after a year’s absence, Carter Beene, Joshua Burrell, and Joey Medrano all to vie for playing time. The Rockets look to have Quiroz play some outside linebacker as well as run the ball and will have Kobe Ramage back after starting last year. The secondary will look to Kane Daniel, Christian Fulkerson, Armando Vega, and Chris Archibeque to stop the pass-happy teams on the Rocket schedule.

The teams to beat this year appear to be Artesia and Centennial but the talent is everywhere in the 5A classification. “It looks like Los Lunas will be coming out of their district with (O’maury) Samuels leading them – he is for real. Up north, I’m looking for probably (Piedra Vista) but you can never tell what Aztec is going to have coming back. From the Albuquerqe area, I don’t know.” It appears that the teams from south will create the most problems for the Rockets. “Whoever wins our district usually wins state, but I can tell you that Centennial is for real. They’ve got numbers (and returners).” The quest for 11 straight final four appearances – and more importantly, the coveted blue trophy for a state title, begins for the Rockets on August 28th as they travel to face 6A Clovis.

and offensively starting defensive end and some quarterback; and senior Josh Capps, who will play starting guard, noseguard and defensive tackle. At 6-feet, 7-inches, senior Johnny Worrall is the Warriors’ biggest player. He’s also a starter on the basketball team and coming off a memorable winter season that was riddled with triple-doubles. “He’s a big, tall kid who has grown into body this year,” Wigley. “He’s a good leader and hard worker.” Wigley said this year’s offense will be tough, with six seniors as leadership. The challenge, he said, will be be establishing a consistent balance between running and passsing.

time. “I’ve heard it’s a great rivalry and I heard it hasn’t really gone the Demons’ way the last year or two, but that’s down the road,” he said. “All our focus is on Hatch right now and we will play our hearts out when we get to Hagerman.” Graham said he is thankful to be in Dexter and vows to give the fans what they are used to, a competitive football team that the community can be proud of. “I promise you, you will not see a harder working team anywhere you go,” he said. “These are great young men and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.” The Demons open the season at 7 p.m. Friday in Dexter against the Hatch Valley Bears.

Last season’s adversity fueling 2015 NMMI Broncos By Karen Boehler NMMI Sports Press It was a tough 2014 season for the Bronco football team, which went 3-8 overall and fell big in its last few games of the season. But that adversity, said head coach Joe Forchtner, is a plus for the 2015 season. “I think last year will change the sophomores, and have a bigger effect on their lives than probably any other year, because they saw what happens when you don’t do things right,” he said. “You don’t do things 100 percent. There’s a lack of leadership and those guys, ever since that last game ended, have just been on it. They have been dedicated to getting redemption this year. There hasn’t been a day off. I’d try to give them an exercise off and they’d yell at me. I love these

guys. I think they’re hard nosed. I think they’re tough and I think they’re definitely committed to the program, to each other, to doing whatever it takes.” Last season saw four freshmen quarterbacks spend time on the field for NMMI, but none of them are back this year. Asked who the Broncos would miss most, Forchtner named three defensemen: defensive tackles Waylon Roberson and Julien Laurent at D-tackle, and corner Sir Vegias Steele. “Those were key losses, but I think we’ve got good guys to replace them,” he said. Replacing last year’s QBs, the coach said, are four newcomers, including Connor Cramer, a sophomore from Grand Bay, Ala.; Greg Taylor, a sophomore from, Riverdale, Ga.; and Jor-

dan Perifanos-Ta’amu, a freshman from Pearl City, Hawaii. “I don’t know who our starter is going to be yet, but I feel comfortable with any one of those guys,” he said. As far as the remainder of the squad, Forchtner isn’t ready to name any names. “I don’t know who the

stars are going to be yet,” he said. “To be honest with you, I’d be perfectly fine if this was a starless team that won a lot of games, too. I think we’ve just got a good group; a really, really solid group, and I think we’ve got quality depth, which is hard to come by at the junior college level a lot of times. Running backs,

I think we’ve got three or four good ones who could all start. That’s the same at a lot of different positions, too.” So, coach, does that mean you’re solid throughout? “We’re a little deeper at some spots than others, but I feel really good about, one, our sophomores,” he said. “I think

this is a really good class of sophomores and I feel really good about our incoming freshmen. The freshmen are battling the sophomores for spots, and vice versa, and kind of what it’s brought out is a lot of competition, and with the competition comes more quality, See BRONCOS, Page 10

NMMI Colts expecting to remain tough, competitive By Karen Boehler NMMI Sports Press The Colt football team stampeded to a 6-0 start last season after moving up two classifications, from 2A to 4A. Although they were undefeated in pre-district play, they went 1-3 in District 4-4A, against much bigger schools, includng state champ Ruidoso. But head coach Randy Montoya doesn’t think the district record tells the whole story. “4A is definitely a tougher classification, but considering that being our first year, I thought that we held our own,” he said. “We didn’t let anybody just push us around. We were competitive in every game, and a couple of those games could easily have gone our way. But again, that’s just the way it goes. It will be just as competitive this year.” And with only a few key players graduating, he thinks last year’s experi-

ence of playing against the big boys will help. “Our returners know exactly what type of competition is expected at the 4A level,” he said. “And you know, these kids coming in, they don’t know any better. They don’t know how it was back in the old classification.” While NMMI had 13 seniors on last year’s roster, only a few — including quarterback Dennis Todd, running back Dominic Moore and linebacker/ offensive lineman Hayden Maloney come instantly to mind. Those three will be missed, but Montoya thinks he’s got people to step right in. He’s still hasn’t decided on a quarterback — Thursday’s scrimmage helped focus the decision, but Montoya said he won’t decide until Monday or Tuesday — but other positions are much more settled. Running back Carlos

Xibille will be back, hopefully picking right up where he left off. “There towards the end, he really figured things out and was really a key part of our backfield,” the coach said. Another returner who “did a great job” is Penghui Dong, and those two will get help from returners Fausto Baranzini, Jack Tingwall and Luke Johnson

as well as newcomer Julian Recio from Odessa, Texas. And with that crew, NMMI will continue to be a running team. “We’re going to be running, still. We still have those key pieces and again a couple of good pieces attached to them, so we’ll be run first with play action and passing; so our same philosophy.” The receiver core features

6’3 returning senior Francisco Galvez, along with newcomers Christian Padilla and Zachary Goldstein. Montoya is especially excited about Padilla. “He’s been a great asset to us as a new cadet coming in,” the coach said. The offensive line will be led by senior returners Eli Aguilar, Ian Curnutt, and Satchell Pitmann. “They’ve been in the pro-

gram a long time, so they’re my senior look down the line,” Montoya said. New face Hugo Barela is only a sophomore, “But he’s come in and he’s going to be able to step in real well,” the coach said, along with junior Christian Taylor and senior Mateo Fierro. “We’ve got quite a few upper classmen who have See COLTS, Page 10

because those guys get more out of each other, more out of themselves when they’re competing for a spot.” And competing is what they’ll have to do, at least if the Western States Football League coaches are right. The WSFL preseason poll puts NMMI near the bottom of the pack, but that’s just fine with Forchtner. “I love it,” he said. “I think it’s great that the coaches in the conference picked us at the bottom. They want to count us out, that’s fine. I wouldn’t have it any other way. So I feel really good about our team. Our team is driven. We’re angry. And I love it. I wouldn’t have it any other way than to be picked down at the bottom by the coaches in our

2 0 1 5 R o s w e l l D a i l y R e c o rd F o o t b a l l P r e v i e w league. So we’ll see how it plays out and we’re just ready.” The teams at the top of the preseason poll are no surprise: Arizona Western and Snow are ranked No. 1 and 2, and Forchtner said that sounds about right. “Everything I heard about them,” he said. “We talked about before, being a junior college and having to replace a lot of guys. A lot of the guys they have I haven’t seen yet, because they’ve transferred in from Division I schools or what. I t h i n k A r i z o n a W e s tern had 35 DI transfers, something like that. On paper, they look like they’re going to be pretty good, but you never know.” And that’s what the coach and the rest of his staff, including newcomers John Roy, offensive line coach; Brian Vaughn,

NMMI Broncos

secondary coach; Erik White, wide receivers coach; and Kevin Reeves, assistant secondary coach, are all thinking: that it’s what happens on the field that counts. So when the season starts Friday in Colorado Springs, everyone is going to be ready to take it one game at a time. “These guys have been counting the days,” Forchtner said. “I’ve been impressed with the consistency of effort and focus throughout camp. It’s not like most young groups. This group has really been on track and really focused. I think they just want payback. They want payback from last year. They want redemption from last year. The coaches want redemption from last year. So it’s just been a really focused effort and we’re ready for Week 1.”

done a great job. And again, we’ve got a couple of new kids, (senior) Andres Vallejos and (junior) Christian Samuel, who can fill in as well.” On the defensive side of the ball, where it’s been said that championships are won, Montoya has a host of veteran players. “Defense is our key,” he said. “We probably have the majority of our defense returning from last year.” Johnson, Galvez and Curnutt will anchor the defensive line. A great linebacker crew is coming back: Aguilar, Xibille, Tingwall, and last season’s top tackler, Dong, whom Montoya says is a “big key.” In the secondary, Padilla and Goldstein will handle the outside thirds at cornerback, with Baranzini over the top at free safety. Last year’s kicker, Trent

Foster, graduated from both the football and soccer teams, and Montoya is going back to the soccer squad again. This year, he’s looking at Hans Von Bertrab Madero as his kicker. “He looks promising, but again, you just never know until you get in a game situation,” the coach said. “But he looked very promising in what we practiced.” With so many returners, Montoya is pleased with the team leadership, “The leadership is there. We learned a lot after our scrimmage last week against Clovis, how well the pieces fit together. That’s part of the evaluation process. We’ll continue to learn as we go,” he said. The coach knows that the tough District 4-4A schedule won’t get any easier. While Ruidoso may have graduated a large group of seniors, Portales is bringing quite a few back, as is St. Michael’s. “So our district, for sure,

will be some great competition,” Montoya said. The Colts will have five games to prep for district, starting with Fort Sumner on the road. Other pre-district opponents include Capitan, Mesilla Valley Christian, Hot Springs and the 5A Roswell High junior varsity squad. They’ll also have a home game against Albuquerque Academy, tucked in in the middle of district, on Oct. 23. While the future on the field can’t be divined, the gridiron goals for the Colts are simple. “Just to be competitive,” Montoya said. “Help our kids. Put them in a situation where they can be successful. Of course, obviously, our ultimate goal is to compete for that blue trophy, but just helping our kids week to week become better players; better teammates; better individuals. Just help them grow into what we feel like they need to be.”

Coyotes on the prowl for 5A playoffs By Jeff Jackson Record Staff Writer It’s playoffs or bust this season for the Roswell Coyotes. Led by senior quarterback Dominic Anaya, senior middle linebacker Isaiah DeLaRosa and a host of other returners, the Coyotes expect themselves to challenge for the district championship, coach Jeff Lynn said. The quest begins Aug. 28 at Ruidoso. “We’re in Year 3 here, and I think the buy-in and the level of commitment and the work ethic, just kind of the culture, that’s finely got to a point where it needs to be. So I’m excited about this year,” Lynn said. The Coyotes won eight of 21 games in Lynn’s first two seasons, but this year he is expecting a higher level of success based on nucleus of returners at key spots and a winning attitude fostered on the freshmen and junior varsity squads. “My first year here we made the playoffs and lost

in the first round and then last year we kind of took a step back,” Lynn said. “I don’t that we took a step back as far as a program is concerned because our JV was good and our freshmen team won the Border Conference. So at the lower levels I think we’ve been building. “As far as this year’s concerned, we’ve got nine seniors and then we’ve got a big group of juniors, about 25 juniors. I’ll be real disappointed if we’re sitting here at the end of November and we’re not in the playoffs. I think we need to be a playoff team and we need to take the next step and win a couple of games in the playoffs. My expectation is to make the playoffs and make some noise. We have a district and obviously we want to win the district but every game’s important because what it boils down to is seeding and who did you beat versus other people that they beat. We’re going to go into every game that we’re going to shoot all the bul-

lets and then throw the gun at ‘em. We’re going to try to win every ball game. It’s important that we play well all year.” That could happen if Anaya connects often enough with 6-foot-3-inch Jacob Miley, the Coyotes’ top wide receiver, and running backs Jared Perez and Jared Morales run the ball effectively. “The enthusiasm is good,” Lynn said. “What I see a big change in is I think we’re a better team. I think the guys on this

Mayes Lumber

team genuinely like each other. I think they’re a tight-knit group. Just as far as being together, being a group that’s the one thing that might be a little different than in years past. Dominic’s done a good job. He’s our leader on offense. He’s got a year of experience underneath his belt. I think that bodes well, and the quarterback position will be solid. “I think it starts with the run for us, but Jacob Miley is one of our better players so I think it would behoove

us to throw the ball a little bit more than we have in the past. If you’re looking for a percentage, I’d say 65 percent run, 35 percent pass is probably where we need to be,” Lynn said. Lynn also believes the Coyotes won’t be pushovers on defense as that side of the ball is seasoned as well. “Here at Roswell High we’ve always had pretty good skill kids but we’re going to be big up front. From an offensive line standpoint, we’re going to

be about 250, 260, 270 across the board at every position. And defensively, we have that same type size. And we’ve got some good linebackers and some good secondary people behind them. So I think defensively we’re going to play with good effort and we’re going to swarm the ball and work to be physical. That group is led by Isaiah DeLaRosa (senior, middle linebacker) who led our team in tackles last year.”

Bobcats goal for 2015 is simple; take it all back By AJ Dickman Vistas Editor

The Hagerman Bobcats have won their district the past three years, including an undefeated run to the state title in 2013 and a close loss to Escalante in last year’s title game. Expectations are high for the Class 2A District 2 champs and new head coach Andrew Rodriguez wouldn’t have it any other way. “Our goal this year is simple; take it back,” said Rodriguez. “We want to get the blue trophy again. That’s what we are striving for and now it’s time to make it a reality.” Rodriguez has been an assistant coach at Hagerman for 7 years and said he is excited to take over a team that lost several key players from last year’s squad. “(Alejandro) Ramos, (Mario) Arebelos and (Alex) Veloz were a huge part of our success the past couple years, and it’s going to take more than three guys to replace them,” he said. “We have young guys ready to step up to the challenge. They are hungry to get their piece of it.” Rodriguez said sophomore Osbaldo Najera will take the reins at quarterback. “He was a starter last

year, but he’s new to the position,” he said. “I have confidence in him and so do his teammates.” Rodriguez will also look to upperclassmen leadership to keep everyone on track. “Gavin Quiroz has been suiting up with us since he was an 8th grader,” he said. “He’s a senior now and is our starting center and defensive tackle.” Rodriguez will also expect plenty of stops from middle linebacker Logan Franklin. “He led our class in tackles last year and was top 5 in the state,” he said. In the backfield, Rodriguez is counting on Issac Morales and Andres Arebelos. In a state classification with only seven teams, the Bobcats are used to stepping up to play teams from larger schools early in the season. “Our first three are tough,” said Rodriguez. “Capitan is a class above us and has a lot of good players coming back,” he said. “Loving will be improved from last year and of course the third week of the season will always be tough.” Hagerman has defeated arch-rival Dexter in close games the past two seasons. Rodriguez said this is the best the rivalry has

been in a while. “It’s one of the funnest weeks to prepare for and then Friday night is great,” he said. “The stadium is full and it’s a great environment for these kids.” Rodriguez said he is confident that his players best effort will be enough to extend the Bobcats district championship streak and get back to the promised land. “The message I give these guys is to give me their best, no matter what,” he said. “They are so talented and work so hard anyway, if they can set their mind to give their best in every drill, every weight room session, every snap, then I know we can take it back.” The Bobcats open the season at 7 p.m. Friday in Capitan against the Tigers.

Lake Arthur Panthers looking to set records in upcoming season By Paul Lessard Record Correspondent Thank goodness for 6-man football! If not for the shortened version, the Lake Arthur Panthers would not be able to attempt to set one of the more difficult records this year. The team – all 8 of them – will attempt to tie the NMAA state record for most consecutive years of being in the state championship game this 2015 season. The Panthers, coached by Jose Porras, has been to the state title game for the last six years in a row – winning four and coming up short twice. The Panthers lost to power-house Hondo last year to finish as runner-ups. The Panthers hope to return to the state title game and tie Animas – who reached the title game seven straight years in the late 80’s. “Last year, was a successful year,” stated Porras, the school’s principal as well as head coach. “We had a goal to return

back to the state championship and defend the crown and did just that. Did it end the way we wanted it to? No. I give credit to the young bunch that we had. We strived to achieve our goal and we reached it.” Returning to the title game – and tying the record – is still an attainable goal this year despite the numbers. The Panthers have only 8 players with no seniors and will have to replace their captain from last year, Cody Dalton. “At the beginning of the year, we set our goals, and we set them high,” said Porras. “Sometimes it’s just a dream for some teams to make it to the state championship, but in New Mexico 6-man football it’s always been a small group (vying for the title) so we think we always have that chance and it’s a goal our students always set. Reaching that goal is definitely a reachable goal for this See LAKE ART, Page 19

Artesia Bulldogs march on after yet another title By Jeff Jackson record sTaff wriTer Artesia won the 5A state championship last year Ñ everyone knows it and all 10 teams on the BulldogsÕ 2015 schedule know it Ñ but coach Cooper Henderson has a different idea. When the Bulldogs open this season Aug. 28 at Belen, the team they humbled 49-21 for their 28th state title, Henderson would prefer his players forget that accomplishment. Ò We really put last year behind,Ó said Henderson, entering his 20th year as Artesia head coach. Ò Different people do it different ways. Our philosophy is each year is a different group, different chemistry. Whenever you think

young bunch that we have this year.Ó Leading the Panthers will be junior Brandon Dalton, CodyÕ s brother, who will take over the

about what you did last year it just gets you in trouble.Ó The 12-1 Bulldogs had to overcome a determined Goddard team to reach the state final. Playing at home, Artesia was standing last in a hard-fought 42-41 victory over the Rockets in the semifinals, and Henderson expects the same tense battle this year when the teams met Oct. 30 at the Bulldog Bowl. Ò When you go up against Goddard it doesnÕ t matter what you did the year before you better be ready to play. I know they will be,Ó Henderson said. Henderson must replace stan d ou t tail back Travis Wilkinson, who led Artesia by averaging 112 yards a game. Ready to take the ball is

senior Jesse Gallegos, who backed up Wilkinson last year and gained 382 yards himself on just 51 carries. Ò HeÕ s a smaller back than Travis, not in the

same mold,Ó Henderson said. Ò I wonÕ t compare them, but heÕ s a hard worker.Ó Another leader for this yearÕ s Bulldogs will be senior Justin Houghtal-

ing, who returns for a second season as the starting quarterback. Last season he started all 13 games and completed 229 of 384 passes for 3,436 yards and 38 touchdowns.

Houghtaling, 6-5 and 175 pounds, was intercepted only eight times. Ò I look for him to be one of those seasoned leaders who can handle a lot of things,Ó Henderson said.

quarterback duties. Ò Little brother is taking over for big brother,Ó explained Porras. Ò He is stepping up and taking on, not only the quarterback position but the leadership role within the team.Ó Two other players that look to make an impact

are fellow juniors Saul De La Cruz at running back and Jordan Lilly up front, both returning starters from last year. Ò We have a pretty solid base with these two returners.Ó The others consist of Luis Tarango, who started on defense and was

the teamÕ s kicker, Carlos Montoya, Abi Lopez, Kyle Palmer, and Jorge Rangel. Ò WeÕ re low numbers this year, so everyone is going to have to know and understand all of the positions because everyone is going to have to play all of the positions.Ó

Coach Porras believes that Floyd will probably give the Panthers the most trouble in the district. The Broncos nipped the Panthers last year for the title, but graduated six seniors including Wyatt Chandler. AndÉ .it appears that Hondo still

has plenty left in the tank to make it out of the other district and give the Panthers fits. The season Ð and the aforementioned state record Ð begins in earnest with a Sep 4th home game with Reserve.
