PARKING INFORMATION
To access our site, go west from North Main Street onto College Avenue and proceed through two stop signs. As you continue west you will discover our location. The first entrance is very busy. The second entrance on the west side provides easier access. Access is also available from 8th street near Spring River Golf Course. RESERVED PARKING — Reserved parking is available in the northwest parking lot and the three smaller south one-way parking lots and will benefit the New Mexico Youth ChalleNGe Academy. A $5 donation for single one-time parking or $10.00 donation for a weekend pass will be requested. FREE PARKING — All remaining parking will be open parking around Cielo Grande Recreation Complex at no charge. There are miles of paved parking with four entrances/locations for participant and spectator parking. Free close-to-field access lots off of College Avenue, west of the existing playing fields, will have parking all the way to 8th Street. Our easiest access free parking is off of 8th Street, just west of the existing playing
fields. And finally, our free, but extremely congested, parking is at the main reserved parking entrance on College Avenue. To avoid problems with law enforcement, do not park or drive on the walking path south of the playing fields and observe all NO PARKING signs. If someone double parks (blocks another vehicle in) or parks in a non-designated area, they will be towed at the vehicle owner’s expense ($150 minimum fee; see towing signs at all site entrances). RV parking will be located on the north side of College Avenue, off-site. RV PARKING is being provided by the Roswell Parks & Recreation department. The lot is located just North of the main park entrance off of College Blvd. Overnight RV Parking Permit is $25 per night. Please contact Parks and Recreation at (575) 624-6720. Please drive slowly and cautiously as we have many more pedestrian crossings this year.
EVACUATION PLAN AND PROCEDURE — We expect our parking lots to be full and the overflow areas to be very crowded with vehicles. The public safety team, along with the Streets department and parking staff, has placed barricades and road closed signs in strategic locations to help with traffic congestion in case of evacuation during an unforeseen event. We are asking that all motorists obey traffic signs and follow the traffic patterns as directed by staff members. Remember, your safety is our No. 1 concern. In the unlikely event of an emergency, instructions will be announced over the loudspeakers at Cielo Grande and on the eventʼs official radio station, HOT 97.1 FM.

‘Show Me the Money’ packed with national talent Friday, May 26, 2017
By Dennis Freels FlagFootballX.com The Largest 4-on-4 Charity Flag Football Tournament in the world is back in action this weekend, and the SHOW ME THE MONEY division will be showcasing some of the best 4-on-4 talent from around the USA. With some of the best to play the game in town to hang out with the aliens, this will surely be a show you don’t want to miss! The money field will be packed on Sunday so get your popcorn, hot dogs, lemonade and turkey legs ready to go because it’s time to Show Me the Money in Roswell! Here are the breakdowns for the 10 squads battling it out for the $6,000 payout...
DREAM TEAM, California — These guys are ready to go with four big tournament wins coming into Roswell. Top national level receiver Marc Couch, one of the best to ever play the position, will be the beast to beat. Speedy Tre’dale Tolver is also tough to handle at WR and veteran Texas champion Skip McCoy just adds to the momentum as the loaded Dream Team comes to Roswell with a lot of confidence. Veteran free safety Jerry Urias knows how to run the defense, and working alongside the scientist/grandfather Greg Velasco aka G-WIZ they will be solid and provide some nostalgia for longtime fans. If these guys don’t win the money, someone else played

COM, Dallas — Formerly known as Full Armor, GoTeamUniforms.com comes ready to fight the battle at any level. Veteran QB Dennis Freels loves the game of 4-on-4 and can’t wait to capitalize on the momentum of a recent Dallas tournament win. Height won’t be a problem with big man pickups Angus Quigley and Camil Hozbo. Experienced lock-down corner Rudy Vallez will be leading the defensive

Bourguet’s Tucson Turf teams here to have fun — and to win
Friday, May 26, 2017
& Sea Food The Tucson Turf 17-and-under squad poses near the lifesize SPIKE sign at last year’s Hike It and Spike It 4-on-4 Charity Flag Football Tournament after winning their division. Pictured with the team is Battle Sports Science founder Chris Circo. By J.T. Keith Record Sports Writer For some families, Memorial Day Weekend means going on vacation, hanging out with loved ones, tossing a football back and forth and a little barbecue. For Toby Bourguet, it’s about satisfying his flag-football jones at the Hike It and Spike It 4-on-4 Charity Flag Football Tournament. Bourguet’s passion for flag football dates back to his undergraduate days at Arizona State University. The people who watched him play said he needed to go to Roswell. A friend introduced him to Jason Montoya of Roswell, who volunteered to put Bourguet and his best friend, Sean Roebuck, on his team. Montoya’s team had just won a national tournament and Roebuck and Bourguet drove eight hours from Marana, Arizona to play with Da Bullies in the “Show Me the Money” bracket. They made it to the round of
eight. “That was the most fun we ever had,” Bourguet said. “The next year we brought our kids and they took second in their first year of playing here.” Bourguet is the director of operations, head coach and quarterback for Tucson Turf. He loves the Hike It and Spike It tournament so much, he has teams competing in seven divisions this year: 15-16 male, 13-14 female, 13-14 male, 11-12 male, two 10-and-under male squads and, of course, the “Show Me the Money” bracket. Six of Bourguet’s children will be in playing in the tournament: sons Trenton (17), Coben (15), Treyson (13), Kendren (8), Emeron (5) and daughter Rylen (11) have all won national titles. Last year, the Turf teams won first place in six youth divisions. Trenton will join his father on the money fields as the Turf goes for a piece of the $6,000 payout.
Bourguet said Hike It and Spike It is different from other flag football tournaments. The way his team is treated by the event staff and Roswell community makes all the difference. When the small army of players arrive at their hotel, Roadway Inn, they see their names on the billboard, welcoming them. The Turf also plays in 7-on-7 tournaments featuring five-star athletes and much more media attention and hoopla than the relaxed, family-friendly environment at Hike It and Spike It. To Bourguet’s family and rosters, Roswell feels like a home away from home. Bourguet is amazed and grateful that his HISI experience started with himself and Roebuck driving over from Marana to the present, with over 120 people making the trip. Normally, they travel on Thursday and barbecue after registration on Friday and See TURF, Page 20

the year, especially since the team is rolling into town with three big California tourney wins. “Last year was rough,” Abye said. “I was injured and we brought some new guys that hadn’t seen that level of play before.” His veteran QB still kept the team in the mix with their two loses coming by a combined total of 3 points. Big pickups out of Texas, Justin and Jackson Donkor will be huge for Stay Ready on both sides of the ball, along with big downfield receiving threat Mitch Grod. These guys can ball, so opponents better be ready to battle from the first play. -----TRUTH, Dallas — Captain and QB David Keirsey knows how to put the pieces togeth-

Other big North Texas pickups Mike Bea and Chase Richey will be a handful as well. These guys have had a chance to play together lately with a deep Dallas tournament run and every single man can play both ways. This is a well-rounded team that will be a hard out. -----VOODOO, Amarillo, Texas — JW Miller has been tearing up these money fields for a long time. He knows his offense and can put people where they need to be to make the big plays. Jason Myers is tough to beat on both sides of the ball and with brothers Cody and Thomas Springs flying all over the field — and bickering a bit — opponents
“Show Me the Money” winners, Wet ‘N’ Dirty, celebrate with money in hand after last year’s victory, but the Florida squad will not return for 2017, leaving the door open for one of the 10 talented and experienced teams to take the title. will have their hands full. Last minute pickup Terry Menefield could be the difference in the big games, teamed up with Alex Layog flying in from
San Jose, California. -----DUCKS, Amarillo, Texas - With four players from last year’s tough Slaughterhouse squad,
Braden Frye comes in to regroup with some Ducks to put together high-octane offense. Big playmaker Tae Tillman leads the defense, along with
another 4-on-4 experienced DB Chuck Lewis. Dalton Brakebill leads the receiving corps; look for him and multi-threat QB/WR Tyson Dennis to keep foes thinking. These guys play all the time and know how to score points. -----EL PASO YOUNG GUNZ, Texas — Back with almost the same team as last year, these guys are ready to battle it out. Only losing to the eventual tournament champion last year by 6 points, this squad believes they have what it takes to win. Led by veteran QB Robert Reyes, the Young Gunz will be hard to stop. Top receiver Demetrius Blakley and veteran DB Fernie Cortez will lead their respective units along with corner/ receiver Edgar Arguijo, Matthew Berroteran, Chris Spears, and crazy See MONEY, Page 28

after the games on Saturday. On Sunday, after the tournament has concluded, they set up a bigscreen TV in the Roadway Inn courtyard and watch videos of the weekend’s games, with plenty of cheers and laughs. “Hike It and Spike It is what we do,” Bourguet said. “The whole Roswell national committee has made it so easy for us to come back. They’ve been so kind to us; we try to respect the tournament. We love Roswell. We plan for this every year. It’s how we start our summers. On the last day of school,
we pick our kids up at 12 p.m. There are 10 to 12 vehicles that will travel to Roswell.” Bourguet is encouraged by the fact Hike It and Spike It gives a Character Counts! Sportsmanship Award to go along with a national trophy. “We cherish (sportsmanship awards) as much as we cherish national championships,” Bourguet said. “If we don’t display the character we’re looking for, it doesn’t matter. We don’t talk about winning. We talk about controlling your attitude and effort. We want the kids to be good people.” The owner of Battle Sports Science, a sports apparel and protective equipment company,
was at last year’s tournament and was impressed with the Turf’s success on the field and off, and now sponsors them with high-quality mouthguards. Gamebreaker, a leader in soft shell helmets, and Adidas are also sponsors. Despite the success, and the pressure to stay successful, Bourguet has always believed it’s about having a good time and keeping things in perspective. “I want my kids to know life comes before any sport,” Bourguet said. “Sports are supposed to be enjoyable. My dad always tells the kids before they play, ‘the one who has the most fun wins.’”

Character Counts! ensures strong sportsmanship By Bethany Freudenthal and Karen Boehler Roswell Daily Record As with nearly all athletic events, the teams that participate in Hike It and Spike It come in it to win, but from the inception of the annual 4-on-4 flag football tournament, there’s been an added component to the competition: a strong focus on sportsmanship. It’s not that the teams — from the youngest youth athletes to the “Show Me the Money” participants — don’t want to win, it’s that they know there’s a bonus if they play by the mantra, “pursuing victory with honor.” In 2000, Character Counts! became a sponsor of the Memorial Day Weekend event and in 2014 they became the top sponsor for the event. Their objective, across the country at both the high school and college levels, is to try to redirect the focus in sports competition to the role that these events play in the development of the athletes. “We think the tournament provides an outstanding platform for Character Counts! and it’s an opportunity to present to the community throughout the event the example of athletes competing with intensity and fervor and at the same time respecting each other and the event,” said Judge Alvin Jones, who was the first co-chair of Chaves County Character Counts! According to Jones, Hike It and Spike It realized early on that Character Counts! could be a key component of the event. “There’s always rules,” Jones said. “But fundamentally there’s the issue of good sportsmanship.” Each year, every HISI division competes for a Character Counts! award, determined by the officials. While that puts an added bit of responsibility on the officials, Jones said they appreciate this recognition of sportsmanship and recognize the role the award plays. “The officials throughout the event keep track of the quality of the play and behavior of the contestants on each of the fields they work, and the determination is made before the end of the tournament as to who the teams will be that are recognized,” he said. Teams also come in with goals of not only winning their division, but proving they can win by playing fair. “It’s fairly common to hear people say, ‘Look, we want to try for the character award. Watch your behavior,’ and if something happens, teammates immediately intervene and settle things down and deal with the upset, whatever it is,” Jones said. Winners of the Character Counts! Sportsmanship Award will receive Hike It and Spike It commemorative trophy footballs, a coveted item for all HISI competitors.

MASH unit primed for a fun, safe tournament

By Jeff Tucker Roswell Daily Record While they’re not the whacky meatball surgeons seen on TV, the MASH unit at this year’s “Hike It & Spike It” tournament probably has more experience taping ankles. For the 22nd straight year since the inception of the annual 4-on-4 charity flag football tournament, the Eastern New Mexico Medical Center MASH medical unit will be on hand at Cielo Grande Recreation Area throughout this weekend’s tournament providing firstaid care. “It’s lots of fun,” said Brooke Linthicum, marketing director for ENMMC, one of the tournament’s annual sponsors. “We really enjoy it. It’s a great way for us to be out there interacting with the community and providing a great service. It’s much-needed. cal unit coordinator for the MASH unit, estimates he’s personally taped more than 300 people’s ankles over the years at the Memorial Day Weekend tournaments. Injuries requiring surgery have occurred in the past. “It’s crazy how many injuries there are out there, unfortunately,” Linthicum said. “You see some crazy stuff out there. I’ve seen some very obviously broken ankles, legs, arms. We’ll send over at least a dozen or so to the hospital if they need additional evaluation by a physician and the lab kind of stuff.” Preventative care is also available at the MASH units. “That’s part of the wrapping that we do,” Linthicum said. “We wrap ankles, knees. We’ll have sunscreen. We’ll have water, ice. A lot of time the guys will come over and get the Bengay stuff put on some of their muscles just to warm them up a little bit so that they don’t hurt themselves as bad. Anything that we can do to help kind of prevent anything.” Between all the preventative and post-injury care, Linthicum said there’s nothing quite like watching the biggest 4-on-4 flag football tournament in the world that includes nearly 600 teams. “I go out there for the entertainment,” she said.
City has Cielo Grande flag football fields ready for action
By J.T Keith Record Sports Writer Hike It and Spike It is Roswell’s showcase every Memorial Day Weekend, with more than 500 teams from all over the nation coming to Cielo Grande Recreation Area to play 4-on-4 charity flag football for prizes and money. After years of wear and tear, the competi-
tion fields had fallen into bad shape. The fields had mustard weed growing on them, a mixture of Bermuda grass and perennial ryegrass from being overseeded, as well as awful clumps and bare areas. Roswell Parks & Recreation Department parks and grounds manager Jim Burress turned to David Blewett, golf superintendent at the
Nancy Lopez Golf Course at Spring River, for help in creating an attractive look and state-of-the-art playing fields for teams. “The biggest problem with the fields that I saw, was poor care and lack of knowledge,” Blewett said. “We used the knowledge we learned on the golf course to make the fields better. We treated it like a golf course fairway and cleaned it up.”
Blewett’s proposal to the Parks Department was to spray those areas with Roundup and kill all the weeds, followed by reseeding the grass with modern Bermuda grass. After the 2015 Hike It and Spike It, the Parks Department sprayed the fields, prepped and seeded, then top-dusted the fields with sand to keep the seeds wet, Blewett said. After that, they
continued to fertilize the grass and fill it in. The competition fields were in good shape for last year’s tourney. To keep the grass looking the way it does now, the grass is mowed with a fairway mower that is used on the municipal golf course. The grass is controlled by pre-emergent herbicides. The grass now is a model standard, Blewett
said. There may be an occasional weed, but normally, it’s 99.9 percent Bermuda grass. He said the Hike It and Spike It fields look more like a golf course fairway now. “Hike and Spike It is a source of pride for me,” Blewitt said. “It’s really nice to help out the whole city. My crew has been very supportive, and the park workers have been helpful. It’s a team effort.”

man Tiger flying all over the field. -----TUCSON TURF, Arizona — The infamous Toby Bourguet brings the famous Tucson Turf brand back to the money divisions. This guy’s played more flag football than all of us put together and his youth teams travel across the United States
regularly, leaving a trail of tears everywhere they go. The old men — Bourguet, Sean Roebuck, Sundric Steptoe and Mike Honea — have joined forces with the new generation — Trenton Bourguet, BJ McDaniel, Mario Padilla and Bryan Noriega — for a mix of experience and youth that will be a lot of fun to watch. They don’t get to play together much, so it’s hard to guess how they will perform, but if Toby can get his guys in sync and pick up where he left off, they may be able to
put the kids on the podium. -----EL PASO COBRAS, Texas — These guys won Hike It & Spike It five times in a row back in the day. QB Ernest Raya and the Cobras won the big Las Cruces tournament a few years ago and have been playing a lot of 8-man over the past year to stay in flag football shape in hopes of coming back to win the money division this year. Big playmaker Justin Vasquez is always a threat on offense, and Cory Gentry will look to
lead the defensive side of the ball. These guys have played together for so long that it shouldn’t be much of a problem converting back to 4-on-4 after the break. -----TEAR ‘EM UP TIGERS, Oklahoma — This close-knit group of high school friends left for college to play football and now they are back and looking for the next level. Going straight to the top is never easy, but these guys have the athleticism to match up with

anyone. All-State point guard and college baseball and football player Travis Galbreath is the heart of the team and if he is on, they are going to be making some noise. Tyler Dixon holds one of the top spots at WR and three-time national track champion Jywayne Allen will be locking down opponents on defense. It will be tough to make it to the final without more experience, but if anyone sleeps on their pure football skills, they may regret it.
