Last-Minute Gift Guide
Roswell Daily Record
Give experiences or memberships for unique gifts
By Lisa Dunlap Roswell Daily Record
T
hat last-minute gift doesn’t need to be a hastily purchased candy box or a new necktie, as much as those might be appreciated. Gift buyers also can think about the many local experiences, activities or memberships they could give their loved ones or friends that could add zest or richness to people’s lives throughout the year. From spa treatments to symphony tickets to scuba-diving lessons, many local options exist for a gift that will be remembered and last beyond the holiday season. Consumer behavior and marketing expert Joseph Goodman of Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri has found research indicating that experience gifts create more happiness for recipients. A 2015 paper he co-authored with Sarah Lim reviewed studies that showed that gift recipients were more likely to remember being pleased by gifts of lessons, trips or other experiences as compared to material gifts. Yet purchasers often turn to objects anyway. For one reason, gift buyers reported more satisfaction for themselves by giving material items, and, for another reason, gift givers said they felt a need to have a close relationship with the recipient. To give a welcomed gift of an experience, you might need to know whether someone would want to get a babysitter for a day, for example, or whether they would feel comfortable with a massage. For those reasons, experience giving is still considered fairly atypical, Goodman and Lim wrote. While gifts of material objects might be easier to buy for some on your list,

Here are some ideas for local experiences for people on your list. For the people who enjoy the arts and culture, consider giving tickets to the last two concerts of the season for the Roswell Symphony Orchestra. While the orchestra offices and online orders close for the holidays from Dec. 14 through Jan. 2, you can arrange for the tickets after the start of the year. Another possibility is memberships to the Roswell Museum and Art Center or the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Arts. The Roswell Museum membership includes discounts on classes and workshops and planetarium admissions, while the Anderson Museum membership would include hand-made invitations to

while several local gyms and fitness centers, gymnastic clubs and dance studios have offerings throughout the year. For some outdoor adventurers, there’s scuba div-
ing. The Scuba Shop on Sycamore Avenue offers either emailed or physical gift certificates, said owner Tabitha Denny. Recipients will receive in-water scuba training, including during a weekend trip to Texas, and online courses so that they can receive their Professional Association of Diving Instructor (PADI) open-water certification. A gift of luxury might include arranging for a day at a local spa or a salon or even a “staycation” at a local bed and breakfast, such as the Clary Sage Bed and Breakfast on North Lea Ave or, for people who would enjoy time on a working ranch, the Burnt Well Guest Ranch southwest of Roswell. Other ideas include gift certificates to one of the two movie theaters in the city or tickets to an upcoming live theater show, archery or shooting lessons, or a paint party at Main Street Arts. The ideas are as plentiful as the interests of your friends and family. Senior Writer Lisa Dunlap can be reached at 575-6227710, ext. 310, or at reporter02@rdrnews.com.

Take a short drive to find that last-minute gift By Mike Smith Roswell Daily Record

RTESIA — “You never know what you’re going to find in this store.” That’s how owner Gayla Ivy describes B&B Newstand and More located in downtown Artesia. From darts to kites, her store located at 309 W. Main St. could be a haven for those looking for last-minute Christmas gifts. “People in Roswell, Artesia and Carlsbad play darts,” she said of her dartboard and supplies. Along with those items, people can also find Zippo lighters and Candleberry candles. “I do sell a lot of candles,” she said. Ivy added that B&B also has plenty of Artesia High School Bulldog flags in honor of the 30th state football title won earlier this month. For the comic book fans, Ivy said there is no need to leave the area, as B&B’s racks are filled with comics. “Nobody has comic books anymore,” she said. “Comic books are half price.” Ivy added that B&B has, “Harry Potter and John Wayne playing cards.”

In business since 1962, Martha’s Fabric Shop in downtown Artesia offers plenty of last-minute gifts. B&B is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A short walk from B&B is Gracie’s, which is located at 313 W. Main St. Whitney Baize has some last-minute gifts as well. “T-shirts are really popu-
lar,” she said. The shirts range from Christmas to “different sayings,” Baize said. Other last-minute gifts at Gracie’s, according to Baize, are cologne, perfume, hats, beanies, nail polish kits and key chains.
Gracie’s is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Baize said the store is closed on Sunday and Monday. She said Gracie’s “will not be open Christmas Eve
since it’s on Sunday.” Martha’s Fabric Shop at 316 W. Main St. also has last-minute gifts, according to Clarissa Derrick and Cassandra Witherspoon. The store, which has been in business in Artesia since 1962, carries fashMike Smith Photo

Groupon tackles last-minute shopping for the forgetful The Associated Press

ou know that moment when you remember who you forgot to get a present for on your shopping list? Groupon — the only holiday shopping destination that offers instant, last-minute gifting options for everyone on your list ranging from paint classes to sushi nights to no-chip manicures to family activities — does. (Graphic: Business Wire) The ads, created with O’Keefe Reinhard & Paul, appeal to forgetful shoppers and remind them that Groupon has experiences for everyone on their list. And with instant gifting, they can finish up their shopping and go back to a restful night’s sleep. According to the National Retail Federation, only one in 10 Americans complete their holiday shopping by mid December with indecisiveness over what to buy ranking as the number one cause. “This campaign celebrates what sets us apart from all other holi-
day shopping destinations — the ability to instantly gift amazing local experiences from small businesses in your community,” said Jon Wild, vice president of North America marketing, Groupon. “We have the distinctive ability to be the idea last-minute gifting source for shoppers with our wide variety of activities, restaurants, beauty services and more. Plus, we provide a seamless savings experience for the gift-giver.” The last-minute gifting campaign continues Groupon’s use of celebratory musical storytelling with lyrics set to up-tempo polka tunes. The ads, running on television, online video and radio through Christmas, are an extension of Groupon’s broader holiday campaign that launched in early November. “We have built a unique voice for the Groupon brand that is instantly recognizable with its use of orchestral music and operatic rhyme,” explained Matt Reinhard, Chief Creative Officer at OKRP. “This year we saw an
