Roswell vs. Goddard, enough said
Red
By J.T. Keith Roswell Daily Record
In some parts around the world, it’s called the Hatfields vs. the McCoys. But here in Roswell, New Mexico, they call it the Roswell vs. Goddard football game. The annual hate-fight has been going on for 58 years. This is a rivalry where it’s been told that Roswell players would

sneak onto Goddard’s practice field and paint their goal post red. Or a dead Coyote would show up on Roswell’s school step. Each team would put its initials in the middle of the other team’s practice field. “I remember when my good friend, Andre Cheatem, and I went to the same middle school together,” DonTrell Moore said. “We started out at Roswell
together, and he left to go to Goddard. I was thinking how could he do that? I was extremely upset by that. We have remained good friends over the years, but I was bothered by that. “My senior year (2000), we beat Goddard 51-6 en route to our state championship. We still talk about letting them (Goddard) score six points on us. That’s how much we hated them. Our

mentality was let’s beat the crap out of them.” Through the years, Goddard has prepared for the Roswell game like any other game in the season. Former Goddard player, Danny Boswell, thinks back to his senior year in 1967, and feels good about tying Roswell 20-20, yet they won the state his senior year under coach Scott Hennington.

Former Goddard player and coach Joe Harton last played in 1982. Harton remembers scoring the winning touchdown as a running back in the victory. Harton coached under Sam Jernigan. One of Harton’s vivid memories was in ‘93, when both teams were really good. Roswell had to beat Goddard by nine

points to make the playoffs. The Coyotes won the game by five points, but failed to qualify for the playoffs. Goddard went on to win the state championship over Clovis, 3-0, on a field goal. “For that game, they had to bring in bleachers,” Harton said. “Those were the most fans I have ever seen in the Wool Bowl. I remember that fans were sitting in the isle because both teams were so good. Back then, they only took two teams.” Expect the unexpected in tonight’s game, in which records and standings mean nothing. What is on the line tonight? Not much for Roswell. If Roswell wins and Belen wins on Saturday against Los Lunas, Roswell head coach Jeff Lynn thinks his team will end up with a No. 3 seed. If Los Lunas wins, then Roswell could be bumped to the No. 4 or 5 seed. Belen is unbeaten on the season at 9-0. Even if Goddard were to lose this game, they can still make the playoffs, because they have beaten two district champions this season. In week seven, they defeated Deming, 24-14. They beat Capital, 19-6, in the first week of the season. Outside of rivalry week, Goddard has more to gain by winning than Roswell. “We have a chance at the playoffs,” said

Goddard coach Chris White. “I’m not saying it’s a good chance, and I’m not saying if you win four games that you should be in the playoffs. We didn’t set our goals to say ‘Hey, we should be 5-5.’ It is what it is. I can’t unring a bell. We just have to go do what we can do on Friday night.” No matter what team you root for, expect players to come out of this game spent, having given everything they have for their schools. For the seniors on both sides, it will be their last chance to wear their school colors, and the memories of this game will last a lifetime. “We treat it as another game,” White said. “We try not to over-hype any certain game. When you start trying to get up for one certain game, that’s when you get caught unprepared. I try to tell the boys this, ‘to never get too high and never get too low, just try and keep an even keel.’ Yes, we want to play every game with emotions, but you take them as they come. Yes, it’s a rivalry game.” White has both played and coached in this game. He has been a part of when Goddard beat Roswell 14 years in a row, ending in 2014. White feels just having a chance to get in the playoffs should be enough for his team to be ready. White has seen Roswell enough to know that the Coyotes want to run, with a lot of motions and run misdirection plays at his

team. On defense, White expects Roswell to run a 4-3 and 53 defense and fly around to the football. “We are still playing with the mindset that we are going to play another game after this,” White said. “We know there’s no guarantees, but we are not approaching it like it’s the last game we are ever going to play. It’s a must
win, and that’s how we are going to approach it. We’ve been in that position for several weeks.” Lynn is going for three victories in a row over Goddard. “They have a good tailback in Diego Miranda,” Lynn said. “Their quarterback is a good little operator. When I turn on the film, I see the same-old Goddard to me. Goddard has a philosophy, and they do what they do and stick to it.”
Friday, November 3, 2017 5 Lynn reflected to three years ago when his team wasn’t very good, and Goddard was going to be a No. 2 seed, and it ended up being a 21-10 game. In Lynn’s opinion, there has not been a bad Roswell-Goddard football game. “We don’t treat this like it’s another game,” Lynn said, “it’s a big game. There is a lot riding on this game from a playoff stand-

November 7, 2014 – In the closest game of the series in over a decade, Goddard again found a way to get a win, it’s 14th straight against its rival, the Coyotes. Roswell actually led at the half and even played the entire game without a turnover, but ultimately just couldn’t find a way to move the ball in the second half against the Rockets. Meanwhile, in this year’s matchup Goddard was offensively led by quarterback Cameron Neff, who accounted for over 300 yards of total offense, including 27 carries for 171 yards. Current Roswell quarterback Dominic Anaya, now a senior, made several big plays on offense for the Coyotes on the night, including scoring the lone touchdown and setting up the only other score, a field goal, with a 25-yard run up the middle.

November 6, 2015 – The Coyotes ended a 14-year skid against their cross-town rival, scoring 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to beat the Rockets for the first time since 2001. The teams traded touchdowns through the first 16 minutes of the game, stalemated at 14-all, until the Goddard defense stepped up, causing fumbles on consecutive Roswell offensive plays. The Rockets took advantage of the Coyote miscues, scoring twice to take a 28-14 lead into halftime. In the second half, each team scored putting the Goddard lead at 35-21 with 10 minutes left in the contest. But the Coyotes kept fighting, as quarterback Dominic Anaya connected with Jacob Miley for a 27-yard touchdown on fourth-and-12 to get within a touchdown of the Rockets. The Coyote defense forced a punt, marched down the field for the tying score, then forced another punt before Anaya led his team into the Goddard red zone once again to set up Isaiah De La Rosa’s game-winning touchdown.

point. If we win, we are a top four seed. They (Goddard) need to win to secure a playoff spot. There’s no bones about this is, we feel like this is a big game. It may be just another game to them, but we certainly don’t treat it that way. Every game from here on out could be our last game.”
A lot of the players on the field tonight were teammates in middle school, and have played together at Berrendo, Sierra, Mesa and Mountain View middle schools. “The main thing I will tell my kids is to relax, not to do anything stupid or let your emotions get the best of you,” Lynn said. “Let’s go out there and play the way we are capable of playing.” This is a game where long after the players have

November 4, 2016 — The Roswell Coyotes scored a go-ahead touchdown with 3:39 left in the fourth quarter and held off a charging Goddard offense to defeat the Rockets 22-14 at the Wool Bowl, defeating Goddard for the second year in a row after a 14-year string of Goddard wins in the cross-town rivalry. Knotted at 14-all early in the fourth quarter, the Rockets marched into Coyote territory, but a string of false start penalties had Goddard taking one step forward and two steps back. On fourth-and-long at the Roswell 37-yard line, the Coyotes stopped Goddard senior running back Devon Quiroz to take over on downs. The Coyotes used a steady dose of rushes from junior fullback Gabe Najar and sweep plays to junior running back Michael Ponce to move the ball into Goddard territory. Facing a fourth-and-short at the Goddard 35-yard line, senior quarterback Bear Kyser tossed to Najar for a big first down and then some. On third-and-goal at the 3-yard line, junior slotback Daniel Sosa took the handoff on the sweep and willed his way into the end zone. Najar bulled his way in for the 2-point conversion to give the Coyotes a 22-14 lead and eventual win. The Coyotes had 274 yards on the ground, including 127 yards on 25 carries from Najar, who scored one of the three Roswell touchdowns on the night.
