e’re honored to have you as a guest of the greatest, oldest fair in the state, the Eastern New Mexico State Fair. We are proud to now serve all 33 counties in the great state of New Mexico. The exciting fair week begins on Monday, Oct. 1, with the largest parade in all of New Mexico. After the parade, cruise on out to the fairgrounds and fill your day with wonderful food, an outstanding carnival with gyrating rides and free entertainment, both national and local in flavor. We are excited to announce this year will be FREE PARKING!!!! We are also excited to let you all know the carnival will be up and running at noon on Monday and we will also open the Carnival on Tuesday at noon . We have scheduled hourly events every night at our entertainment stage and daily Junior Livestock Shows. There’s truly something for everyone — educational booths, a commercial building overflowing
with wheeling and dealing businesses displaying their latest products, and an arts and crafts building filled with outstanding talent. Of course, you won’t want to miss the culmination of the youth’s yearlong hard work with the Junior Livestock Sale that begins at 9 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 6. The best-of-thebest will sell their animals to the highest bidder – it’s a rollin’, good time! A great big thank you to the city of Roswell as they provide police and firefighters to make sure you are in a completely safe environment as you enjoy your time with us. Safety is paramount to us and we suggest you follow some simple steps for everyone’s safety. First, take a picture on your cellphone of your child in case you get separated. Go over safety rules with them upon arriving at the fair. Show them safe places to go in case they get separated from you: the fair office, the police command post, the security office or one of the two locations the fire department has on grounds.

Second, place a note with your cellphone number in the pocket of their clothing, then we can make immediate contact with you. More than likely, you will never need these safety rules, but it’s better to be safe. I would like to thank the many volunteers that help put on this event, without you it would not be possible. A big shout out goes to our board members, office personnel in the main office, the Junior Livestock office ladies, and our grounds manager and his staff —great teamwork! Most of all, the ENM State Fair would like to say thank you for coming and being a part of this year’s fair. Without your support, we would not be able to continue this great tradition. Our theme this year is “95 and Still Alive!” Be sure to check out our website, enmsf. com, for further information and the schedule for the weeklong fair.

HELP SUPPORT AND HONOR OUR VETERANS Most of us have not and will never serve in the Military, but that doesn’t mean you can’t help.
Tell Them Thank You and Mean It!
Your simple voice of gratitude, spoken to a Veteran, may seem to be a small thing for everything a Veteran faced and all they gave up,
some giving their life,
but is something that our American Veterans do not hear as often as they should.
You can make a difference in a Veterans life. Don’t just say you support Veterans, join with us, give and help to honor the brave men and women who have selflessly served and are currently serving our country and risking their lives to protect our freedoms.

A down-home country fair 96 years in the making
W
elcome to an event 96 years in the making! The Eastern New Mexico State Fair has a long and proud history. Although we count 96 years from the first Chaves County Cotton Carnival in 1932, the roots of the fair began many years before that with the Southeastern New Mexico and Pecos Valley Fair Association. The purpose of the fair was to exhibit agricultural and orchard products. The fair of 1893 was an opportunity for local residents to show how productive the Pecos Valley could be. Even local
farmers were surprised at the array of crops represented at the fair. The highlight of the event however was the Alfalfa Palace. This architectural phenomenon was constructed of bales of sweet-smelling alfalfa and resembled a castle complete with battlements. The Alfalfa Palace was more than an amazing structure as it also housed the local exhibits. Covered pens were adjacent to the palace and housed the livestock. It is noted that as the wind began to blow, the Palace had to be evacuated and one lady reluctant to leave was carried out by a concerned gentleman. It was later discovered that the “lady” was actually a dummy of Martha Washington from one of the displays. The gentleman in question was considered no less heroic upon this revelation. Those early days of community gathering would slowly evolve into the Eastern New Mexico State Fair that we enjoy today. The first parade to open a fair was held in 1900. This first parade created a new name for the fair. There was such a wondrous display of floral decorations that the fair became known as the “Flower Fair.” Today’s parade boasts over 100 floats and entries representing businesses, schools, teams, clubs and more. In the early fair days children from local schools were given three days off so that they and their families may enjoy the fair. Today, the opening day of the fair is known as “Fair Day” and many children and their families attend to celebrate the commencement of fair week. The tradition of gathering every year to show off crops and wares has continued since the 1890s with few exceptions. Although there was a lapse during World War I the fair continued in 1932 when the Cotton

Carnival came into being. A noted addition to the fair began this year when a Cotton King was crowned in grand style on the courthouse lawn. In 1933 a poll of fair visitors indicated that along with local residents, 25 states were represented amongst the fairgoers. Top on the entertainment roster was a community singalong in which 2,000 school children participated, the crowning of Miss Alfalfa and Miss Apple, and of course the mock battle between the New Mexico National Guard and cadets of NMMI. By 1931, the Cotton Carnival was so successful that it became known as the Eastern New Mexico State Fair and soon outgrew its facility in the National Guard Armory and surrounding tents near North Main and 11th Street. To accommodate such a grand event, the fair board purchased land southeast of the city limits. The 27th annual fair became the first fair to be held on the current fairgrounds in the year of 1949. Thus the current Eastern New Mexico State Fair was born. Over the years we have witnessed the evolution of local cowboys competing in calf-roping events to a full Professional Bullriding Tour. We have seen the Junior Livestock sale become the largest event of its kind in the state. We have had the home economic skills of farmer’s wives grace the displays and we have played host to entrepreneurs from all over the globe. From the time of the Alfalfa Palace-style fairs to the Chaves County Cotton Carnival to the current day Eastern New Mexico State Fair, one thing has remained the same: the focus of the fair is community. Whether gathering to compare crop techniques, to support the

youth of 4-H and FFA, or to delight in the sights, tastes, and experiences of the midway, there is something for everyone at the Eastern New Mexico State Fair. Come be a part of history in the making as we look forward to next year’s fair and beyond.

• There were once two parades held during fair: the opening day parade and the “Old-Timers Parade.” • In the 1890s children under 15 were invited to enter a burro race, the winner received $10. • The Chaves County Cotton Carnival is rumored to have acquired this name because fair officials ‘wanted each word of the title to begin with the letter C! • At the time of the first “Alfalfa Fair” a business lot in town could be bought for between $100 and $500. • In 1933, 100 Mescalero Apache Native Americans lived on the fairgrounds in teepees exhibiting baskets and beadwork. • Fruit was the main crop in the Pecos Valley before cotton and alfalfa took over. In 1937 a devastating frost ended most of the commercial fruit crops. • In 1939 the fair hosted Tidwell Shows. The truck hauling the performing elephant broke down in Lubbock. “Honoring All Who Served”

2018 Eastern New Mexico State Fair Grand Marshall

n 2010, Susana Martinez was elected governor of the State of New Mexico. She became New Mexico’s first female governor and the first Hispanic female elected governor in the history of the United States. Prior to being elected governor, Martinez was a prosecutor for 25 years in Dona Ana County. As Governor, she has prioritized keeping New Mexico’s communities safe, ensuring students receive a quality education, and diversifying and improving the economy. As the daughter of a Marine Corps veteran and the step-mom of a former Navy serviceman, fighting for our veterans is more than an issue for Governor Martinez – it’s a value. Governor Martinez secured fund-
ing to establish four veterans cemeteries in Gallup, Fort Stanton, Angel Fire, and Carlsbad that are dedicated to veterans and their families who live in rural areas throughout New Mexico. These cemeteries will allow those who have served our country to be buried closer to home and the family members of our veterans to more easily travel to and from their loved one’s gravesite. Under Governor Martinez, the New Mexico Veterans Business Outreach Center has helped entrepreneurial-minded veterans start and expand small businesses. It was named #1 in the nation by the U.S. Small Business Administration and has helped create 199 veteran-owned businesses since she took office in 2011.

Parade to pay tribute to soldiers, first responders
By Lisa Dunlap Roswell Daily Record
T
he 100th anniversary of the end of the World War I has prompted Eastern New Mexico State Fair parade organizers to plan an event that will pay tribute to U.S. veterans throughout the years, as well as salute first responders. Gov. Susana Martinez is expected to be the grand marshal of the 10 a.m. Monday parade, according to Col. David West, chief of staff of the New Mexico Military Institute and a parade committee participant. The Eastern New Mexico State Fair parade holds a hallowed place in Roswell history, an annual tradition since 1900 that prompts the closing of most schools and many businesses for the day to allow the community to gather in appreciation of the agricultural industry and other aspects of the regional cultural experience. This year, about 80 to 110 floats, bands, and other entries are expected to participate, said Adriann Ragsdale, in-house counsel for Pioneer Bank and the parade superintendent. The parade runs south on North Main Street, starting at College Boulevard and ending at Summit Street. “It is really cool how the whole community comes out to support the fair, starting with the parade,” she said. “It is pretty amazing how many people can fit on Main Street.” Ragsdale said that, originally, the New Mexico Military Institute concept of honoring soldiers and first responders represented only a few entries in the parade, but the committee decided after hearing NMMI”s ideas that the Institute’s theme should be the focus of the entire parade. “They have different period of uniforms and they are going to have floats dedicated to each war,” Ragsdale said. “They are inviting any veterans from

“We Have Your Back,” will include police, firefighters, emergency medical responders and personnel of the New Mexico Army National Guard. Some members of the Patriot Guard Riders, who attend the funerals of veterans and first responders, are also expected. For enthusiasts of military memorabilia and current armament, the parade will include some treats. These include a 1916 Harley-Davidson motorcycle with a machine gun and a sidecar. Now owned by NMMI’s McBride Museum and restored by a company in El Paso, Texas, the motorcycle was used by Gen. John Pershing’s command, which was known to use the vehicles in pursuit of Pancho Villa. Another historic piece will be a 1905 Howitzer used by the A Battery that has been on display at the Pancho Villa Museum in Columbus, New Mexico. The Walker Aviation Museum of Roswell is also expected to bring some historic uniforms or items from the WWII era, and the National Guard is planning to show some current vehicles or armaments. West said that Chaves County has many distinguished combat veterans, including NMMI faculty and staff but also many who are business people and community leaders. “Ironically they are pretty humble,” he said, adding that he considers the most significant those men and women who gave all, dying in combat. “Behind them are the ones who served in harm’s way, the combat veterans, and we have a number of them in Roswell,” he said. “From a first responder standpoint, fortunate that we have them, but unfortunate that they have to be in situations to protect our lives and their lives as well.”

Youth volunteerism helps build fair

ach year the county fair gets big help from the youngest part of the community. Before, during and after the fair, youth from Roswell and other communities in the county will provide hundreds of volunteer hours to make sure the fairground’s biggest annual event goes smoothly for participants and visitors alike, said Larry Hobson, president of the board for the Eastern New Mexico State Fair. “When we talk about youth, those are the leaders, the foundation of our future,” he said. “We talk about our fair family, footprints on the sand on the fairgrounds, of all the numerous young people who have been here, whether exhibitors or just enjoying the fair and the carnival. Hopefully we make some sort of lasting impression on one of these young people that we do make a difference in their life.” He estimated that more than 70 youth volunteer prior to the fair to clean up buildings or grounds, hoe weeds, repair or paint structures or do whatever else they feel is needed. This year, for example, members of the Roswell High School Future Farmers of America club installed new chain-link fences between the rows of sheep pens. “It might seem like a small thing to some, but it is an important thing to me,” Hobson said. Skyler Pierce, FFA faculty adviser at Roswell High School, said that five club members worked alongside members of the Chaves County 4H Club to remove the

old fencing and install new fenc- ent counties to participate,” Hobson ing. The project also was helped said. “Why would a young person by Thunderbird Fence Supply and who lives in Raton, New Mexico, Butch Hefner, a sheep superinten- or Farmington, New Mexico, want dent for the 2018 Chaves County 4H and FFA Fair. In prior years, Hobson said, youth volunteers rebuilt the stands in the sales ring area. Besides 4H and FFA clubs in the area, other groups giving their time include the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. During the fair, many youth and teens will volunteer by taking exhibit entries, judging exhibits or assisting with the livestock shows. Of course, hundreds of youth also participate as exhibitors or contestants. They can take part in the junior livestock show or enter their projects, animals, produce or flowers for a judging and a chance of prizes. Of course, they also can be in the Oct. 1 parade or compete in the State Fair Queen competition. “They come to us from all differ2018 Eastern New Mexico State Fair “Honoring All Who Served”
to come all the way to the Eastern New Mexico State Fair. They’ve already had their county fair and the state fair. But they are going to drive all that distance to come to the Eastern New Mexico State Fair, and there has to be a reason. I’d like to think that it is the service we provide. For their part, it is the love of the game of presenting their animals. That is their passion and their belief. And we just want to be here to give them the opportunity to present them.” Hobson also said he has seen many youth who work with the fair grow into community leaders and that the fair organization is proud to have a part in that.
