Graduation 2018

Roswell Daily Record

RHS gives back to veteran with honorary diploma

By Curtis Michaels Record Correspondent

L

owell Hughes received his high school diploma at Roswell High School’s graduation ceremony Saturday evening. That’s newsworthy because Hughes is 98 years old. “I finished the 10th grade,” Hughes said. “Then I enlisted in the CMTC (Citizens Military Training Camp) at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. That was in 1938. It was a 30-day program. After that, I came on out to Roswell. “I was 18 when I got to Roswell. My brother-in-law had a business rebuilding generators and starters. He put me to work at $10 a month plus room and board. I worked there until I went into the army in January of 1941.” The day that Pearl Harbor was bombed, Hughes was living in a tent at Ft. Sill, where he had been assigned once again. Camp Barkeley at Abilene, Texas, was being built to accommodate his company at the time. Hughes knows the dangers inherent to forgetting history, and he’s happy to go tell the students at Roswell High School about his

experiences in World War II and how it has affected families and our nation. School principal Ruben Bolaños was thrilled to be able to honor Hughes this year. “Mr. Hughes is a veteran who’s been attending the Roswell High School veterans assemblies for some years now,” Bolaños said. “Any time a veteran takes time to attend one of those, it’s a special treat for all of the students and the faculty. “A couple of weeks ago, he said that he chose to go and serve, and after his years in the army, he came back to see about getting back into school, but they wouldn’t let him. So he found a trade. He became a successful man. “I thought, ‘This is an opportunity, he’s 98 going on 50, he’s sharp and has a good mind. I’m sure there are veterans in a similar situation. Mr. Hughes has given a lot to the school and we’re honored to be able to thank him for his service and for bringing his stories to our students.” Hughes has always enjoyed talking with people. People of every age and of every walk of life interest him. His outlook has garnered him friends from all over the world.

“Since retirement, I travel a lot,” Hughes said. “My wife and I used to travel until she passed away in 2013. Since then I traveled around the world on a cruise in 2015, and just this year I took a cruise around the tip of Africa. You learn a lot doing that. I’ve met all kinds of people from all parts of the world. Multi-millionaires and people who could barely scrape together the money for the trip are on a cruise. I’ve made good friends from all over the world. Some of them have traveled to Roswell for my birthdays since 2015.” Hughes worked for his brotherin-law until 1962 when he started his own business. “I formed Hughes Electric Motors,” he said. “We repaired electric motors and did automotive electric repairs. I had lots of friends. Lots of ranchers and farm people traded with me. I retired in 1988. I had five employees.” This honorary diploma from Roswell High School surprised him. He had no idea it was going to happen. “I want the faculty and everyone to know I certainly appreciate it,” Hughes said. Bolaños is as grateful for Hughes as Hughes is for the award.

Roswell High honorary graduate and Bronze Star recipient Lowell Hughes, 98, receives the high school diploma he wasn’t able to receive while serving in World War II. He is shown during Saturday’s commencement with Roswell Independent School District board members and Interim Superintendent Susan Sanchez, who is holding his diploma. “I’m honored that I get to be the principal that does this,” Bolaños said. I don’t know that the school district has ever done something

like this. I’m proud that my students came up with the idea and I think it will be a very good evening.”

There’s a lot of advice for graduates Columns and editorials about graduation all sound somewhat familiar, and it’s little wonder. High school graduation is one of those almost universal experiences, something nearly everyone can relate to. Each generation, it seems, has its “Do you remember where you were ... “ moment, some shared experience those of a certain age can harken back to. Often that involves an ending of some sort, perhaps a famous person’s passing. But not always. Sometimes it revolves around a beginning, the point at which something changed for the better. Every generation knows its moment. But the experience of passing from the mostly carefree world of high school (don’t laugh, graduates — it’s true, for the most part) to the wider world of work or higher education goes beyond even those moments in terms of familiarity. It transcends generations — most Americans alive today crossed a stage at some point, were handed a diploma and kept moving forward, beginning what they expected to be a new and exciting chapter. Often, they’ve been right. In other words, graduation is a big deal — and it’s one that each of us feels qualified to comment on, no matter our age. As long as someone doesn’t start off with, “Well, back in my day... “ they’ll probably avoid sounding silly. Right?

John Dilmore Editor’s Notes Well, maybe. But it’s nearly impossible to avoid being repetitive. There’s been so much advice aimed at grads for so long that any attempt to add to that feels a little forced. What I would say to grads is, if you’re looking for onesize-fits-all advice for navigating the years ahead, it’s out there, in bulk — and a lot of it is really, really good. A few examples you’ll find, aimed specifically at graduates: • Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. — Steve Jobs • Don’t ever confuse the two, your life and your work. The second is only part of the first. — Anna Quindlen • Life is an improvisation. You have no idea what’s going to happen next and you are mostly just making things up as you go along. — Stephen Colbert • Success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm. — Winston Churchill • You get in life what you have the courage to ask for.

— Oprah Winfrey • Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds that you plant. — Robert Louis Stevenson • Love what you do. Get good at it. Competence is a rare commodity in this day and age. — Jon Stewart • Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened. — Dr. Seuss Good advice all. Beyond such words of wisdom I’d say, listen to family, listen to friends. Listen to teachers and coaches who’ve helped guide you in the right direction. And never forget to listen to yourself. One last thing I’d say to graduates is, don’t be afraid

as you move from one point in life to the next to heed a little advice from time to time. Whether it’s from a parent, a friend, a co-worker — we can all use some input along the way, sometimes when we least realize it. Few things we go through are unique to us. Somebody somewhere (perhaps sitting right next to us?) has shared the experience. So don’t be hesitant to listen, afraid to ask — or embarrassed to learn. Some lessons are always relevant, year after year, but perhaps none more than that. Roswell Daily Record editor John Dilmore can be reached at 575-622-7710, ext. 303, or editor@rdrnews. com.
