Something happened to the Lake Arthur Panthers last season that was new to them. They got off to an uncharacteristically slow 1-3 start. This put them in a hole, forcing them to go on a two-game winning streak just to make the playoffs. Lake Arthur is the smallest school in Chaves County and had high hopes entering the 2017 season after playing in the championship game. In that game, the Panthers came up short after missing several extra points in a shootout against San Jon, 47-46. During that game, eighth-grader Adrian Guillen had to come in for injured senior quarterback Brandon Dalton for
three series. The one thing that impressed coach Jose Porras was the way Guillen competed for the three series he was in the game. “We lost by one,” Porras said. “He (Guillen) had to step in as quarterback, as an eighth-grader and play the final quarter. He was nervous, but he stepped up and did a good job. I told him he had nothing to be ashamed of, he did what he had to do. I’m proud of him.” The 2018 edition of Lake Arthur will see them be small in numbers, with seven players, and young: with only one senior. The rest of the team will be comprised of three sophomores and one freshman. The Panthers will have to avoid injuries and be in top condition if they hope to get back to the playoffs.
“We have a young bunch,” Porras said, “with sophomores, freshmen, and eighth-graders. The ones that are out here are the ones that want to be out here, and that’s what keeps me going.” Coach Porras is entering his 19th season as head coach. The one thing that keeps him coming back to coach his alma mater is the excitement of the season. After the slow start, last year the challenge for him was finding a way to give the team confidence — and he did as they won two straight games make it into the playoffs before falling to Vaughn in the quarterfinals, 48-36. Lake Arthur finished the season 3-5.

Hagerman turns to Rivers to lead program By J.T. Keith Record Sports Editor
Shawn Naranjo Photo
Hagerman is finally healthy with the return of star quarterback Jakob Bejarano. Here Bejarano runs the ball against Roswell’s junior varsity last season.
Built by the COMMUNITIES we serve!
Proud to Sponsor Area Sports Teams
Hagerman has turned to a first-time, first-year head coach in Guy Rivers to try and turn their football program around. The one thing the Bobcats want and need if they are to get back to their winning ways is to have a coach stick around for more than one season. The Bobcats have not had the same coach return, or a winning record, since 2014 when Casey Crandall was the coach. The Bobcats and former coach Adrian Olivas parted ways as he went back to Artesia to be their running backs coach. Olivas lasted only one season before deciding to leave.
With the enthusiasm for football on the rise the only thing lacking is the numbers. Hagerman will be young this season and will have to play some eighth-graders. the ‘Cats will have only three seniors. Rivers is from Clovis, where he played under coach Eric Roanhaus and was an all-state defensive back. He was an assistant coach at Texico for Mike Prokop for three years and spent four years at Goddard coaching under Sam Jernigan. Hagerman will run multiple sets on offense and stay away from the spread offense, which they ran last season. Rivers is old school in that he wants his team to run the ball more
than they will pass it. The man behind center will be senior Jakob Bejarano. Bejarano suffered an injury that forced him to miss five games last season. He seems to be fully recovered and is ready to go out in style in his senior year. He has worked on his footwork and setting up throwing the ball. “I’m pretty excited about my team,” Rivers said. “They’re all hard workers. It took a while for the kids to buy into my program. These kids have had five coaches in five years. They have had so many systems on both sides of the ball in five years. The difference between me and the other coaches is I have seven championship rings, plus

Dexter has a new coach in Arturo Duran Friday, August 24, 2018
By J.T. Keith Record Sports Editor
Talk and good feelings never won anything, but if you’re the Dexter Demons with a new coach and a team with seniors, there is one word for their 3A opponents: Loaded. First-year coach Arturo Duran takes over for Kevin Graham. Duran was a popular choice to replace Graham. He is known as a players’ coach for his willingness to open up the offense and take shots down the field. Duran has a lot to work with in versatile senior quarterback Jarren Amaro. Amaro is healthy after suffering a hamstring injury last season. Look for him to disperse the ball to whoever has the hot hand. Amaro only

has to turn and hand the ball off to Nick Cobos or the long-striding Gustavo Macias. Both players are explosive and no defense can key on one player because either running back can take it the distance. Macias missed most of the season with an injury. If he is healthy, Dexter could have the best set of running backs in District 4-3A. They can also throw the ball to Sergio Ramirez and Jacob Amaya. Both receivers will have to take up the slack for the departed Matt Otero. Marquez at the tight end proved to be a valuable safety valve near the goal line last season. As loaded as the Demons are on offense, look for good teams to

Gateway looks to rise
8
Friday, August 24, 2018
By J.T. Keith Record Sports Editor Gateway Christian coach Shaun Wigley was in a position he was not used to during his 14th season on the sidelines, going 5-4-1. The Warriors had to win two straight games to make the playoffs, only to lose to Mountainair 70-34. Last season Gateway played a lot of young kids that haven’t played a lot of football. They lacked game experience and they missed blocks and didn’t execute. This season they look to do things a better way. This returning quarterback, Wyatt Arlet, looks to continue his improvement as the quarterback. Wigley had moved him from receiver to quarterback at the beginning of the year and it took him a while to get comfortable going through his reads and adjusting to the speed of the game. “Wyatt (Arlet) fought through last year and made great strides,” Wig-
2 0 1 8 R o s w e l l D a i l y R e c o rd P i g s k i n P r e v i e w
ley said. “I watched film of him from beginning, middle and end of the season and I was happy with what I saw.” On offense they will run a lot of different looks. Mainly they will run a spread offense with and a single wing look, a tight formation, and a swinging gate formation. Wigley believes in running a lot of different formations to keep teams off balance. On defense, depending on who Gateway is playing, they will run a fouror five-man line. Also, they will run a 4-3-1 and a 4-22. Wrigley looks for everyone to be their main competition — but singled out Mesilla Valley Christian, Dora, Tatum, and Melrose. Gateway is looking to get the magic back as The Warriors have not won the blue trophy since three-peating (2011-13), with the last win coming in 2013. “To be honest we had a lot of young kids,” Wigley said, “that hadn’t played
a lot of football. That’s the love of this school and the hard part of this school. Anybody can come here and play.” Wigley hopes his seniors on the squad will make up for some of the mental errors they experienced last year. As the season begins, Wigley believes if they fix the errors of being in the wrong spots at key points in the game, Gateway’s win total will improve. Gateway has an open competition at linebacker and a couple of other spots. Wigley has been emphasizing conditioning in preseason so that they don’t lose games because of fatigue and mental errors. With reclassification, Logan, Cloudcroft, and Carrizozo move out of their district. Gateway Christian opens the season Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. at home against Tatum.

By J.T. Keith Record Sports Editor Artesia coach Rex Henderson finally has a championship to claim of his own as a head coach. In his second season at the helm of the Artesia football machine, he claimed the school’s record 30th title by dismantling Belen 48-14 in the Bulldog Bowl. In a way, that game was a little bit of a get-back, as they lost to St. Pius X in Henderson’s first championship game, 34-24. “It’s a good thing,” Henderson said. “I’m proud of those young men that competed hard to be able to do that. It was a really good football team last year and we had a lot of really good athletes to
work with. Every year is a new year and I just enjoy the process.” Now, Henderson will try to go back-to-back with a new quarterback and tailback. Don’t worry, the Bulldogs aren’t sending out an SOS for help, they will be bringing 38 seniors to the games on Friday nights. One of the key questions for Artesia is, who will take the place of All-Everything quarterback Taylor Null. Coach Henderson will go with senior Trent Taylor. Taylor has played a lot the last two years and has the experience and leadership to run the offense. “What he brings to the table are his intelligence and his leadership,” Henderson said of Taylor. “He

understands these guys and the unique personalities in his class and he understands what we are trying to do offensively and how we want to attack defenses. He’s the guy that brings them all together.” Another big question is — who will carry the ball since they lost speedster Robert Fernandez? Henderson thinks that Jagger Donaghe will be able to replace him and provide experience in the backfield. When they throw the ball, they won’t have all-state Chaney Hardt, but they will have J.R. Bustamante and AJ Estrada, as both had 54 receptions on the season last year. The Bulldogs also get Alex Fernandez

Goddard Rockets football hard at work

Friday, August 24, 2018
By Ruben Coronado Special to the Daily Record Coming into the preseason camp, the Goddard Rockets began the 2018 football season with hard work and dedication. Friday they will face 2016 state champion St. Pius X Sartans at the Wool Bowl. Goddard likes to play a tough non-conference schedule to get ready for district play and the playoffs. “First game of the season, you never really know what to expect,” Rockets’ coach Chris White said. “So judging from what I’ve seen so far, we”ll have our hands full. I can say one thing, they have an explosive offense.” Not only will the Rockets have their hands full in the season opener, but their schedule will prove to be a test of this team’s

character from week to week. White enters his third year as coach, along with his coaching staff, and seems determined to uphold tradition and lead these student-athletes to a successful campaign this year. White has led the Rockets to the playoffs in his first two seasons as head coach. “We got the schedule put together this year,” White said, “and it’s a little different from last year. You know we’ll open with Pius, we’ll go to Carlsbad and we added Portales to the schedule this year, which I think will be a quality team for us. Alamogordo comes into the district and Lovington drops out of the district. We’ll still play Lovington, which is a much-improved team with a lot of returners on their roster.”

Coyotes must replace key contributors Friday, August 24, 2018
11
By J.T. Keith Record Sports Editor
Roswell has gone from also-ran to the point of reloading every year. Sixthyear coach Jeff Lynn has the Coyote football program on a rail after going 8-4 last year. One questionable call against Belen (27-20) could have had the Coyotes playing Artesia in the championship game. Lynn has had Roswell in the semifinal game the last three years and looks to take the next step and play for the blue trophy this season. If the Coyotes are to do so, they will have to do it playing one of the toughest schedules they’ve ever faced. New Mexico Preps has all five teams in 5A

Colt football looks to improve in new classification
NMMI Sports Press The Colt football team had a couple of very tough years after the New Mexico Activities Association moved them up a classification to 4A in 2016. Facing teams including Ruidoso (2017 State Champs), Portales (2016 State Champs), Moriarty and Hope Christian — all of which made it to the state championship bracket — was not an easy task. Luckily, this year’s redistricting moved the Colts back down to 3A, which gives the Institute reason for hope. But head coach Randy Montoya said things still won’t be easy. “It’s another great district,” he said of District 4-3A. “From my understanding, Dexter has quite a few returners coming back, so they’re going to
be the front runners in the district, and Tucumcari and Tularosa, they’re certainly right behind them. The good thing about having a young team last year is we saw some good quality teams so hopefully we can learn from that. But we still have a long ways to go.” All three of this year’s district competitors made it to the 3A championship bracket last year, so the Colts will have their work cut out for them. And that tough schedule starts on opening day, when NMMI squares off against the Foxes at home. “Fort Sumner has another heck of a team coming in,” Montoya said. “They’re defending state champions and I think they’re going to make another run at it in their classification (2A), so we’ve

NMMI Sports Press The New Mexico Military Institute Broncos kick off a new campaign Friday night in Yuma against Western Arizona Junior College. The game is set to get underway at 7 p.m. Arizona time/8 p.m. New Mexico time. Bronco head coach Joe Forchtner said more than 100 student-athletes are on this year’s squad and there is some experience as 25 returners are back from last year’s team. Forchtner said. “Guys get here and you’ve got three weeks to teach them everything especially 85 new guys, who’ve never been a part of your system.” Forchtner admits the

Look for the Panthers to give some different looks on offense and show some spread. Pulling the trigger will be Guillen. Guillen is bigger than his starting linemen and plays linebacker on defense. He can throw the ball downfield 40 yards rolling out to his left. “We have Guillen under center,” Porras said, “he’s been running this system

His brother Aarmon Guillen won two championships.” Guillen will look to find his favorite target, senior Jorge Rangel. Rangel is one of the last players to win a blue trophy, as an eighth-grader, remaining on the team. Rangel hopes to finish his career holding up another trophy at the end of the season. Coach Porras has won the blue trophy five times
and finished runner-up five times. He thinks getting off to a fast start and staying healthy will be the keys to the season. He also thinks his team’s speed will make a difference in games. On offense, Lake Arthur is known for running their wing-set but will show some spread to give teams a different look. Porras is expecting good things from this team this season. Lake Arthur opens their season at 7 p.m. at home against Elida on Aug. 24.

As loaded as the Demons are on offense, look for good teams to stuff the box and force Amaro to beat them with his arm. Amaro will have to be able to throw the ball against good teams like Portales, Eunice — and even in the first game of the season against Santa Rosa — to open up the running game. He will have to cut down on his interceptions and throw the ball away if no receiver is open. Look for him to have a breakout season. If Amaro has the senior year he hopes and his other weapons are healthy, look for this to be the most explosive team in 3A. “We are young on the offensive line,” Duran said. “We have to keep working to make ourselves better. Everything starts with the offensive line, and they have done an awesome job this camp.” Last season the strength of the team was along the O- and D-lines. Look for seniors Jaime Munoz and Jordan Marquez on defense to stuff the run and force teams to throw the ball with defensive backs Ramirez and firstteam all-state Cobos back there to intercept the ball. This season one of the major changes on defense

will be the Demons switching from a 4-3 defense to a 3-4 defense. “I think the strength of our team will be our speed,” Duran said. “Our kids can run on both sides of the ball and that will help us out.” As the Demons wore shirts that said “family” for preseason workouts with 14 seniors, it is blue trophy or bust. After going 6-6 last season, they look to improve on their 1-3 record in district play. They played well enough to make it to the semifinal game only to come up short to Capitan, 57-12. For this group of talented seniors, it is now or never. The last time the Demons won the blue trophy in football it was when coach Duran was the quarterback and athletic director Dave Campbell was head coach, 20 years ago. With the reclassification, look for the demons to play more local teams like New Mexico Military Institute and to resume the Battle of the Bridges with Hagerman. “Coach Trujillo does an awesome job with Santa Rosa,” Duran said. “It ‘s just a good program and we have to prepare for them. We just have to keep getting better as a person and as a team.” The Demons travel to take on Santa Rosa at 7 p.m. on Aug. 24.

Still, Montoya had reason for optimism after a scrimmage over the weekend against last year’s 3A titlist, Eunice. “We had a pretty good scrimmage against another great team,” he said. “They showed us some weaknesses we need to work on. It’s just a process - it takes us a few weeks to figure things out, but I’m pretty pleased with where the team is at. Obviously we need a lot more improvement in all areas, so that’s what we’re working on each and every day. But I’m pleased with our progress and hopefully we keep on making strides each and every week.” Aside from the district foes, NMMI will see matches against Capitan, Texico, Hagerman, Hot Springs, Loving and Hope Chris-
2 0 1 8 R o s w e l l D a i l y R e c o rd P i g s k i n P r e v i e w tian. But by the time the Colts have wrapped up that pre-district schedule, Montoya is hoping numbers and athleticism will translate into victories and a solid preparation for district. With 54 players on the squad, including 21 returners, Montoya thinks the numbers bode well. “Definitely pleased with the numbers that we’ve got out. The kids who came back, they got a lot of experience last year and hopefully we can grow from it,” he said. He also thinks this year’s squad is more athletic. “We’re nowhere where we need to be as far as team speed. Again, these first couple of teams we’ll see they’ve got a lot of team speed and that worries me. But hopefully we’ve got some kids we can plug into the puzzle and make things work to our advantage. But I think from last year we do have some more skills.”
Montoya won’t name names, but is happy with the squad he’s been seeing in practice for the past three weeks. “I don’t want to single anybody out,” he said. “There are a lot of good kids who came back. Our offensive line, for the most part, all came back. We’ve got some defensive guys as well. I just think overall as a team it’s a good returning crew and hopefully we can lean on that experience and have a better season this year.” Last year’s quarterback, Gavin Maloney, is off to a California college to play baseball, and the only other player listed as a QB on last year’s roster is senior Kasen Chester, who’s marked as a wide receiver this year. Senior Jasper Best and sophomore Daniel Xibille are both penciled in as QBs, but until Montoya starts making decisions at game time, just who will fill that important slot is a question mark.
And as is the case with fall NMMI sports, the team is just trying to gel, learn who everyone is and get ready for Friday’s kickoff. “We just try to keep things simple,” Montoya said. “We try not to do a whole lot of fancy stuff. And again, we just try to figure out who can do the basics. Who can get in front of people and who can make tackles.” On offense, that unnamed quarterback may help the Colts got to the air a bit more than in the past. “I think our quarterback position might have a few extra weapons on the outside, so I hope we can pass a little more than we have in the past, with good protection, obviously,” the coach said. “Otherwise, it’ll be pretty much the same. We’ll try to run inside the tackles and set up with play action.” And on defense, simple is also the rule. “We’ll probably just stick with the split defense this
year,” Montoya said. “We don’t see too crazy of an offense on our schedule, so I think we can stick with a split the entire year and hopefully do the best that we can. We’ve had to change defenses in the past depending on who we see, but I think our split will be fine if we can get better each and every week.” Montoya brings back the same coaching crew from past season, which, he said, is a plus. “It’s nice having the same crew,” he said. “That way we can just pick up where we left off. Not a whole lot of teaching. Everybody’s on the same page for the most part. It’s nice to have everybody back.” Long-time Institute coach Charlie Ward serves as assistant head coach, while dealing with the secondary and receivers, kickoff team and trick plays. Mike Guerrero is the team’s defensive guru. “He
tries to get our defense in the right spot. Does our offensive line as well,” Montoya said. Steve Rogers serves as the junior varsity head coach, specializing in the backs and receivers on JV while also helping wherever he can on varsity. And Paul Burrow, is the assistant JV coach, helming the offensive and defensives lines. The coaches and players will get under the lights at home Friday at 7 p.m., and Montoya is thinking positive. “Just excited about another season,” he said. “Hopefully we can put a better product out there than last year. Nothing against last year’s team, it’s just that we went up against some really good teams and we’re going to see another crew of really good teams. But we were young last year. Hopefully we can learn from that and put out a better effort this year.”

new kids have gone through a crash course in learning the Bronco way since they arrived in Roswell earlier this month. “Time is short and every practice is super important,” he said. “For us it’s trying to keep it simple enough. We don’t have everything that we would normally have in.” Forchtner added that the coaching staff didn’t want to overload the team during the early stages of practice. “You practice them for
2 0 1 8 R o s w e l l D a i l y R e c o rd P i g s k i n P r e v i e w three weeks and still make mistakes,” he said. “But, you could put something in by game six, and they’ll pick it up in two days. We put in an adjustment in midweek last year and they picked it up like that and never made a mistake on it and this year we’ve been running that since day five and we still make mistakes at it.” Forchtner likes the Broncos starting defensive line, which will have some experience heading into Friday’s opener. In addition to the D-line, the Broncos’ linebackers also boast some experience too as four sophomores are vying for the inside line-
backer spot. On the offensive side, Forchtner said that sophomore Cody Frampton is in a battle with freshman Gavin Hardison from Hobbs for the quarterback spot. No matter who the starting signal caller will be, the offensive line has plenty of experience as well. That familiarity could help the Broncos during the season opener in Yuma. Forchtner said AWC is expected to be a major power in junior college football this season. “I think they’re going to have a lot of Division One transfers,” he said. “They’re going to be big
and they’re going to be athletically talented and that’s what I know.” Forchtner said the Broncos know what AWC did last year. The Matadors were 9-1 and are coached by Tom Minnick, he leads the school in all-time wins. Forchtner admits that the Broncos have plenty of footage to study from last year and he feels the opening game is always nerve wracking. “We’re going to make the road trip and get after it,” Forchtner said. During his tenure with the Broncos, Forchtner has emphasized “effort” to his charges and that word applies to this year’s team
as well. “We’re not going to have 40 transfers; we’re not even going to have 10,” he said. “But, we’re gonna play harder than everybody else. I told them from day one, ‘if you don’t play hard, you’re not going to play.’ We’ve really got to have a blue collar mindset. We’re going to try and drag everybody in deep water and see how they are in the fourth(quarter).” Forchtner describes the Broncos’ style as “grindhouse football.” “Just play fundamental, disciplined, nasty high effort football,” he said. “Are we going to get that right away? I don’t know,

but I know the guys who don’t provide aren’t going to be on the field.” The Bronco coaching staff asks for three things from their players. “Be tough. We ask them to handle their business and work their tails off,” Forchtner said. During preseason drills, Forchtner and his staff would arrive early in the morning and wouldn’t leave until late at night. With the season opener Friday night, he’s hoping those long hours will translate into a win in the Arizona desert.

that Roswell will face this season on the road ranked ahead of them. Roswell has lost some key pieces in all-state lineman Victor Bolanos, and Eddie Macias on the line, as well as all-state running back Gabe Najar on the offensive side of the ball. On the defensive side of the ball, they must replace all-stater Christian Sanchez and Brandon Perez. Lynn is counting on Julian Vigil to fill in for Sanchez. Competing for playing time on the defensive side of the ball are Julio Garcia and Zack Buckmister. The Coyotes must replace Najar’s 1,200 yards on the ground and 14 TDs. Expect them to
“We really have to replace our linemen, on both sides of the ball. We are going to miss Najar. He was a leader and he got everybody going, but I think we have kids at the skill positions that it is their time to step up. We’ve got guys that can run the ball but replacing those linemen, it’s going to be tough. That concerns me, “ — Roswell coach Jeff Lynn
do that by committee with junior Jasia Reese who had 400 yards on the ground and four TDs. Also look for Justin Carrasco to get his share of touches. Roderick Sedillo and Angel Caballero will carry the ball as well. “We really have to replace our linemen,” Lynn said, “on both sides of the ball. We are going to miss Najar. He was a leader and he got everybody going, but I think we have kids at the skill positions that it is their time to step up. We’ve got guys that can run the
ball but replacing those linemen, it’s going to be tough. That concerns me.” Before they Coyotes can run the ball they must replace the all-state Bolanos on the line — and two of the leading candidates are juniors Xavier Lomeli and Joshua Castillo, who are being counted on by Lynn to open holes. Look for Roswell to diversify their offensive attack and throw the ball more than they have in the past. If quarterback Ethan Valenzuela gets hurt, look for Lynn
to turn to Dominic Nava to take the snaps. The leader of the team is Valenzuela. Valenzuela adds an air of confidence and the ability to throw the ball. His injury against Hobbs last season made the team one-dimensional — teams could load the box and try to stuff the run. This year expect a new look for the Coyotes as they try to become a more up-tempo team and look to throw quick outs and crossing routes to set up their run game. If teams start to play the under-
neath pass, look for Valenzuela to go deep to his favorite target, senior Dylan Tucker. On the defensive side of the ball, Lynn feels like the back seven (linebackers and defensive backs) are as good as they’ve ever been. Lynn feels like the defense needs to get good play from the D-line. “We feel like we’re really solid,” Lynn said. “Our ends are coming along. We lost both ends and tackles so we’ll be playing with new kids up front. I think we will be good up front, they just need some experience and coaching.” The Coyotes will run a 4-3 defense and move around to give different looks to teams. On special teams, Joel Sanchez has won the kicking job and Lynn expects to try more field

goals this season. Look for Roswell to try to kick field goals from 30 yards in. “He’s probably the best kicker since I’ve been there,” Lynn said. “He’s accurate, we will kick field goals this year. He’s good.” The punter spot is an open race between Brandon Martinez and Dylan Tucker. The punt returners will be Reese and Carrasco. This year the Coyotes’ schedule will not allow for them to have a bye, as they will have it the first week of the season. They will play four home games this year. “I like playing a tough schedule,” Lynn said. “We have probably the toughest schedule in the state. With this schedule, it will get us prepared for districts and playoffs.”

will add headaches for opposing defenses. Coach Henderson mentioned Jacob Orona as someone to keep an eye on as well this season. On special teams they will go with AJ Estrada as the punter, and Favian Carrasco will handle the kicking duties. Artesia will handle the return game by committee. On defense look for them to run multiple looks. He returns five starters and some of them will be in new positions. He n d erso n th in k s th e

strength of the defense will be the defensive backs, with the linebackers solid. Henderson points out that Colin Flood is the Mike Linebacker for two years. Henderson is not concerned about winning and losing, but if they are getting better each week. He noted that there have been some years where they have gone into the playoffs with a record that was not so good but they were playing their best football when the playoffs came around. possible, so it would pay dividends on the field in the areas of strength and agility, which should help them during the season. The Rockets have one of the most demanding schedules they’ve had in years — they also play Deming again this year. Deming was district champ last season. “Deming has a lot of returners,” White said, “they could be a dark horse team this year. Of course with our district, there’s Artesia and Roswell. I think you’re talking about one of the most balanced districts in the state. So, you know we’re definitely not going to have any off-weeks or anybody on the schedule where you just look ahead and say you know we can rest here. You know we will have to prepare hard and every week bring our A game.” As camp came to a close, Goddard scrimmaged Hobbs where they

had an opportunity to showcase their hard work from the off-season. One of the more notable things to take from the scrimmage was the way the defense had shown up, swarming to the ball, tackling and causing five turnovers against Hobbs’ offense. “I was really pleased with the kids’ effort in the scrimmage,” White said. “We have seniors that have quite a bit of game experience. Some of them have started for two or three years for us — guys such as Valentino Rubio, Dalton Bowles, Seth Diaz and Angel Luna. These kids have a lot of Friday night reps under their belts.” Coach White mentioned players that played a lot last season in Hunter Beene, Timmy Burrell and Robert Aragon. “We got some good ones coming back,” White said. “Cael Alderete, another kid that comes to mind — he’s a senior and a second-year starter. So, we got plenty of experience on the field.’’ The Goddard Rockets open their season at 7 p.m. at the Wool Bowl when they host St Pius X.
