Roswell vs. Goddard in Wool Bowl - throw away the key
By J.T. Keith Roswell Daily Record
For the 59th time, these two storied schools go at it. Goddard comes in as the No. 1 team in the state and Roswell is the No. 2 in the state. Never in the history of this game have the two teams been in the same district and ranked one and two. A lot is riding on the outcome of this game. If nothing else, bragging rights for another year. This is the game that 20 years from now, players will talk about at reunions. Reputations and legacies are made in fourth quarters like the one that will be played Friday night. Goddard comes into the game undefeated with an 8-0-1
record, after surviving close calls against Los Lunas and Artesia. The tie was to Carlsbad and lightning played into the outcome of the game. Roswell is 7-2 and has faced a tough non-conference schedule. Their two defeats were to Hobbs in the second week of the season and Artesia on a controversial two-point conversion. Roswell has lost key contributors before the season began and has had to adopt a next-man-up mentality. No matter the outcome of this game, look for the Rockets and Coyotes to earn a first-round bye when the playoffs begin next week. In fact, look for both teams to contin-

ue to stay ranked one and two in the seedings. Neither team should have to leave the Wool Bowl during their playoff run. The teams are more alike than they are different. Goddard wants to run power football right at their opponents. They will use a heavy formation and run their quarterback Dalton Bowles, along with Connor Downs, Sammy Zaragoza and Robert Aragon. Goddard wants to get their opponents’ defensive linebackers and defensive backs cheating toward the line of scrimmage and then when the box is stacked with six to seven defenders, they will look for their open receivers in Nate Stone, and big tight-end Hunter Beene who seems to be able to get open in the middle of the field behind defenders. There could be others to catch the ball depending on who is in the game. This has been a special year for Goddard. The Rockets have had the resolve to run the ball no matter what the situation. Whether they have been up or down by 14 points as they were against Los Lunas, they have continued to run. Goddard has gone for it on fourth down in their own side of the field and run the ball. “I just don’t care,” Goddard coach Chris White said. “If we can’t get a yard, we might as well pack it in.” Goddard has used this approach of physical football no matter who they have played this season. They have controlled the clock and held the ball marching 85-yards against Artesia to their one-yard line. Dalton carried the ball against Artesia 45 times for 415 yards. Goddard has played a lot of people so
that they stay fresh at the end of games as well as develop depth. Their O and D lines have been one of their strengths this season. Roswell wants to be physical as well, but in a different way. They want to run jet sweeps and get teams moving laterally and try to get on the edge. They will also come back up the middle with Justin Carrasco, who ran hard against Artesia 41 times for 273 yards. On defense, the Coyotes have been able to hold their own against other teams bigger than them. Their quickness on the lines has allowed their all-state linebacker Cade Manzanares to roam sideline to sideline and make tackles. Their defensive backs have been a work in progress and have gotten better as the season has gone along. If both teams play up to their physical capabilities, look for the deciding factor to be Special Teams, in which Roswell has the edge. In every game but one this season, Roswell has returned a punt or kickoff to the house. Look for the game to come down to the head coaches, Goddard’s third-year coach Chris White has pushed all the right buttons in a season most coaches only dream about. With one game left, he has a chance to get a win over his rival for the first time in three attempts. Roswell’s sixth-year coach Jeff Lynn has turned the program around, but it wasn’t until his third year that he was able to get a win over Goddard, 42-35 in 2015. Look for an exciting game, as the last game of the season will feel like a playoff game. Goddard and Roswell will play tonight at 7 p.m. at the Wool Bowl.

November 6, 2015 – The Coyotes ended a 14-year skid against their cross-town rival, scoring 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to beat the Rockets for the first time since 2001. The teams traded touchdowns through the first 16 minutes of the game, stalemated at 14-all, until the Goddard defense stepped up, causing fumbles on consecutive Roswell offensive plays. The Rockets took advantage of the Coyote miscues, scoring twice to take a 28-14 lead into halftime. In the second half, each team scored putting the Goddard lead at 35-21 with 10 minutes left in the contest. But the Coyotes kept fighting, as quarterback Dominic Anaya connected with Jacob Miley for a 27-yard touchdown on fourth-and-12 to get within a touchdown of the Rockets. The Coyote defense forced a punt, marched down the field for the tying score, then forced another punt before Anaya led his team into the Goddard red zone once again to set up Isaiah De La Rosa’s game-winning touchdown.

November 4, 2016 — The Roswell Coyotes scored a go-ahead touchdown with 3:39 left in the fourth quarter and held off a charging Goddard offense to defeat the Rockets 22-14 at the Wool Bowl, defeating Goddard for the second year in a row after a 14-year string of Goddard wins in the cross-town rivalry. Knotted at 14-all early in the fourth quarter, the Rockets marched into Coyote territory, but a string of false start penalties had Goddard taking one step forward and two steps back. On fourth-and-long at the Roswell 37-yard line, the Coyotes stopped Goddard senior running back Devon Quiroz to take over on downs. The Coyotes used a steady dose of rushes from junior fullback Gabe Najar and sweep plays to junior running back Michael Ponce to move the ball into Goddard territory. Facing a fourth-and-short at the Goddard 35-yard line, senior quarterback Bear Kyser tossed to Najar for a big first down and then some. On third-and-goal at the 3-yard line, junior slotback Daniel Sosa took the handoff on the sweep and willed his way into the end zone. Najar bulled his way in for the 2-point conversion to give the Coyotes a 22-14 lead and eventual win. The Coyotes had 274 yards on the ground, including 127 yards on 25 carries from Najar, who scored one of the three Roswell touchdowns on the night.

November 3, 2017 — For Roswell, on this night it was the Gabe Najar show. Najar took an 8-yard handoff and scored as he cut back to his left and scored untouched. It was his third TD of the night to go along with 95-yards with 3:46 left in the game. Najar’s score was enough to give the Coyotes a 33-21 victory. Goddard managed to tie the score at 7-7 when Tyler Hoover scored on a 52-yard screen pass after a Roswell tackler missed him at the line of scrimmage with 6:19 left in the second quarter. Roswell’s Daniel Sosa capped an 11-play scoring drive when he ran the ball in from the right side and Joel Sanchez added the PAT to give the Coyotes a 14-7 lead with 2:12 to play in the second quarter. On Goddard’s next possession senior standout Diego Miranda took to the ball on the left side and made

Goddard was not to be denied as quarterback Robert Aragon ran a quarterback sneak from the nine-yard line to score and Wieser made the PAT to tie the score at 21-21 with 5:25
