e’re honored to have you as a guest of the greatest, oldest fair in the state, the Eastern New Mexico State Fair. We are proud to now serve all 33 counties in the great state of New Mexico. The exciting fair week begins on Monday, Sept. 30, with the largest parade in all of New Mexico. After the parade, cruise on out to the fairgrounds and fill your day with wonderful food, an outstanding carnival with gyrating rides and free entertainment, both national and local in flavor. We are excited to announce that we have a new carnival this year. Wright’s Amusement out of Colorado. Come check out some rides and some blasts from the past! We have scheduled hourly events every night at our entertainment stage and daily Junior Livestock Shows. There’s truly something for everyone — educational booths, a commercial building overflowing with wheeling and dealing busi-

nesses displaying their latest products, and an arts and crafts building filled with outstanding talent. Of course, you won’t want to miss the culmination of the youth’s yearlong hard work with the Junior Livestock Sale that begins at 9 a.m., Saturday Oct. 5th. The bestof-the-best will sell their animals to the highest bidder — it’s a rollin’, good time! A great big thank you to the city of Roswell as they provide police and firefighters to make sure you are in a completely safe environment as you enjoy your time with us. Safety is paramount to us and we suggest you follow some simple steps for everyone’s safety. First, take a picture on your cellphone of your child in case you get separated. Go over safety rules with them upon arriving at the fair. Show them safe places to go in case they get separated from you: the fair office, the police command post, the security office or one of the two locations the fire department has on grounds.

Second, place a note with your cellphone number in the pocket of their clothing, then we can make immediate contact with you. More than likely, you will never need these safety rules, but it’s better to be safe. I would like to thank the many volunteers that help put on this event, without you it would not be possible. A big shout out goes to our board members, office personnel in the main office, the Junior Livestock office ladies, and our grounds manager and his staff — great teamwork! Most of all, the ENM State Fair would like to say thank you for coming and being a part of this year’s fair. Without your support, we would not be able to continue this great tradition. Our theme this year is “Our Roots Run Deep and True!” Be sure to check out our website, enmsf.com, for further information and the schedule for the weeklong fair.

Jeffrey Charles Stroble Grand Marshal

eff was born July 31, 1972 in Roswell, NM to Charles & Annie Stroble. He has 1 brother and 1 sister. Jeff comes from a large extended family with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Jeff attended Goddard High School and graduated in 1990. Jeff was a very hard worker, always with at least one job, but usually 2-3. He joined the Roswell Fire Department in May of 2002. He enjoyed helping people, and was always there for friends, family, and even strangers. Jeff loved life, he was quite the outdoorsman, enjoying fishing, hunting, golfing, camping, swimming, traveling, drinking beer, hanging out with friends and family, going to Las Vegas every year with special friends, sitting on the deck watching the sunset and listening to music. He absolutely loved music, all genres, from Frank Sinatra to Slip Knot and everything in between. After being together for 3 years, Jeff married Reba Aldrich on August 16, 2004. Jeff has 3 children, Kyle, Tyler, and Kadence; 2 grandchildren, Jackson and Ava. Jeff loved

spending time with his kids, he always had a smile for them and smelled their head when he hugged them. He loved his nieces and nephews very much. Jeff loved to grill, he has 4 grills in front of his house. Any given Saturday or Sunday that he wasn’t working you could show up at his house for some amazing food. Jeff loved watching movies and mostly quoting the most obsolete lines from the movie to see if anyone could guess what it came from. Jeff’s favorite holidays were the Fourth of July and Christmas. He loved to spend Fourth of July with friends and family, eating and relaxing and watching fireworks. Christmas was a competition to see how many lights and decorations he could put up. Jeff was injured in a fireworks explosion on June 5, 2019 and subsequently passed away due to complications from third degree burns sustained during the explosion. He was an amazing person and will be greatly missed.

A down-home country fair 97 years in the making

W

elcome to an event 97 years in the making! The Eastern New Mexico State Fair has a long and proud history. Although we count 97 years from the first Chaves County Cotton Carnival in 1932, the roots of the fair began many years before that with the Southeastern New Mexico and Pecos Valley Fair Association. The purpose of the fair was to exhibit agricultural and orchard products. The fair of 1893 was an opportunity for local residents to show how productive the Pecos Valley could be. Even local

farmers were surprised at the array of crops represented at the fair. The highlight of the event however was the Alfalfa Palace. This architectural phenomenon was constructed of bales of sweet-smelling alfalfa and resembled a castle complete with battlements. The Alfalfa Palace was more than an amazing structure as it also housed the local exhibits. Covered pens were adjacent to the palace and housed the livestock. It is noted that as the wind began to blow, the Palace had to be evacuated and one lady reluctant to leave was carried out by a concerned gentleman. It was later discovered that the “lady” was actually a dummy of Martha Washington from one of the displays. The gentleman in question was considered no less heroic upon this revelation. Those early days of community gathering would slowly evolve into the Eastern New Mexico State Fair that we enjoy today. The first parade to open a fair was held in 1900. This first parade created a new name for the fair. There was such a wondrous display of floral decorations that the fair became known as the “Flower Fair.” Today’s parade boasts over 100 floats and entries representing businesses, schools, teams, clubs and more. In the early fair days children from local schools were given three days off so that they and their families may enjoy the fair. Today, the opening day of the fair is known as “Fair Day” and many children and their families attend to celebrate the commencement of fair week. The tradition of gathering every year to show off crops and wares has continued since the 1890s with few exceptions. Although there was a lapse during World War I the fair continued in 1932 when the Cotton

Carnival came into being. A noted addition to the fair began this year when a Cotton King was crowned in grand style on the courthouse lawn. In 1933 a poll of fair visitors indicated that along with local residents, 25 states were represented amongst the fairgoers. Top on the entertainment roster was a community singalong in which 2,000 school children participated, the crowning of Miss Alfalfa and Miss Apple, and of course the mock battle between the New Mexico National Guard and cadets of NMMI. By 1931, the Cotton Carnival was so successful that it became known as the Eastern New Mexico State Fair and soon outgrew its facility in the National Guard Armory and surrounding tents near North Main and 11th Street. To accommodate such a grand event, the fair board purchased land southeast of the city limits. The 27th annual fair became the first fair to be held on the current fairgrounds in the year of 1949. Thus the current Eastern New Mexico State Fair was born. Over the years we have witnessed the evolution of local cowboys competing in calf-roping events to a full Professional Bullriding Tour. We have seen the Junior Livestock sale become the largest event of its kind in the state. We have had the home economic skills of farmers’ wives grace the displays and we have played host to entrepreneurs from all over the globe. From the time of the Alfalfa Palace-style fairs to the Chaves County Cotton Carnival to the current day Eastern New Mexico State Fair, one thing has remained the same: the focus of the fair is community. Whether gathering to compare crop techniques, to support the

youth of 4-H and FFA, or to delight in the sights, tastes, and experiences of the midway, there is something for everyone at the Eastern New Mexico State Fair. Come be a part of history in the making as we look forward to next year’s fair and beyond.

2019 Eastern New Mexico State Fair

• There were once two parades held during fair: the opening day parade and the “Old-Timers Parade.” • In the 1890s children under 15 were invited to enter a burro race, the winner received $10. • The Chaves County Cotton Carnival is rumored to have acquired this name because fair officials ‘wanted each word of the title to begin with the letter C! • At the time of the first “Alfalfa Fair” a business lot in town could be bought for between $100 and $500. • In 1933, 100 Mescalero Apache Native Americans lived on the fairgrounds in teepees exhibiting baskets and beadwork. • Fruit was the main crop in the Pecos Valley before cotton and alfalfa took over. In 1937 a devastating frost ended most of the commercial fruit crops. • In 1939 the fair hosted Tidwell Shows. The truck hauling the performing elephant broke down in Lubbock. “OUR ROOTS RUN DEEP AND TRUE”

HELP SUPPORT AND HONOR OUR VETERANS Most of us have not and will never serve in the Military, but that doesn’t mean you can’t help.

Tell Them Thank You and Mean It!

Your simple voice of gratitude, spoken to a Veteran, may seem to be a small thing for everything a Veteran faced and all they gave up,

some giving their life,

but is something that our American Veterans do not hear as often as they should.

You can make a difference in a Veterans life. Don’t just say you support Veterans, join with us, give and help to honor the brave men and women who have selflessly served and are currently serving our country and risking their lives to protect our freedoms.

Fair, festivals celebrate Roswell’s ‘deep’ and ‘true’ roots By Alison Penn Roswell Daily Record

U

niting behind the theme “Our Roots Run Deep and True,” the Eastern New Mexico State Fair (ENMSF) and Piñata & Chile Cheese Festival provide an opportunity for locals to partake in the homegrown harvest of the Pecos Valley’s culture and economic history. This spring representatives from the ENMSF, Chile Cheese Festival hosted by MainStreet Roswell and Piñata Festival hosted by Roswell Hispano Chamber of Commerce shared their intentions to grow attendance at all three events by combining their efforts for the first time. In the past, these iconic fall events offered a chance to celebrate as well as learn, and happened on either the lawn of the Chaves County Courthouse or out on the fairgrounds at 2500 SE Main St. “Come for the Piñata & Chile Cheese Festival, stay for the Eastern New Mexico State Fair” is the combined events’ slogan. The Piñata & Chile Cheese Festivals is happening on Sept. 27-28 with free entry and parking, live entertainment, and the carnival will be running also. Sept. 29 is a setup day where the fairgrounds are closed to the public — and following this is Fair Day, and the fair parade will be kicking off festivities, on Sept. 30. The fair will go through Oct. 5. See the schedule for more details. Kathy Lay, executive director of MainStreet Roswell, explained the theme for the events originated from the success of annual UFO

Alison Penn Photo Charla Featherstone, Judy Hobson and Karen Henderson support the fair’s theme ‘Our Roots Run Deep — True’ with their specially made t-shirts. Hobson is the arts and crafts building superintendent and Featherstone and Henderson represent two of the 10 directors.

Festival in July being branded a “New Mexico True” event with the New Mexico Tourism Department “All three events celebrate aspects of our roots or our heritage — our cultural heritage, our agricultural heritage, our economic heritage,” Lay wrote in an email. “We all discussed what we shared in common and then developed our NM True branding statement with this in mind. This NM True branding statement fits all three events —”Our roots run deep. [TRUE].” Lay explained permission was granted to use the brand for the upcoming partnered events. The brand is shown on rack cards and a logo combining all three events designed by Juliana Halvorson, vice president of MainStreet Roswell. Joining the fair’s presence of 97 years, this year will mark the 32nd Piñata Festival, a celebration of Mexican culture, and the 28th Chile

Cheese Festival, which recognizes the local agricultural industries. The Piñata Festival took a break last year but is back on schedule. After reflecting on the theme, Marcos Nava, executive director of the Roswell Hispano Chamber of Commerce, said it is evocative of all the past and present cultures of the Pecos Valley, what unites them, what makes each one unique and how they are currently “working together.” He added that the theme has “good feeling” and the three-in-one event is an opportunity to “join us for authentic New Mexico culture.” In her eyes, Trish Lair, ENMSF manager, said the collaboration is a positive one for the city of Roswell. Lair said combining instead of staggering the three events throughout the two months will lift the burden on the city to close streets for anything other than the Fair Day Pa-

rade on Sept. 30. “With ‘Our Roots Run Deep and True,’ we’re the oldest running fair in the state,” Lair said. “We are one of the last fairs that is still privately owned. We’re not owned by city, county or state or anything. We’re nonprofit. So it just made sense to us that our roots do run deep …” Generations of volunteers are what keeps these roots grounded. Lair said grandparents and volunteers of 20 years pass on the tradition of volunteering to their own kids and grandkids participating in the fair. “We’re all family here,” Mikey McGuire, who assists Lair in the office and has been a part of ENMSF since her childhood, said. “I think our theme this year is so fitting for us because we are such a huge family. It’s like a big family tree and our roots — it’s kept us grounded and kept us all going…” McGuire continued to say the Roswell Fire Department is being grafted into the ENMSF’s family tree by honoring Jeff Stroble, a fire apparatus operator who died on July 21 after a fireworks explosion on June 5, as the fair parade’s grand marshal. At the fairgrounds, Lair added the education building, flower show and arts and crafts will have areas and displays connected to the theme. She added that parade floats aligning with the theme will be judged. “We’re excited and we hope that people come out and support it,” Lair said of the unified effort. “... We’re excited to see how it goes and we are hoping it’s a huge success.”
