JONATHAN BOLDT RDR SPORTS EDITOR
One of the toughest tasks in all of sports is attempting to change a culture of losing and that’s exactly what was put before Roswell head coach Jeff Lynn at the start of last season. Lynn replaced Robert Arreola who coached the Coyotes to a 20-33 mark over five seasons but more importantly was 0-5 in the rivalry with Goddard – a number that proved to be insurmountable in terms of job security. Lynn came to Roswell after being out of coaching for two years but he stayed close to the sport by doing color commentary for KBIM Newstalk 910 AM. Prior to his stint in broadcasting, Lynn was the head coach for New Mexico Military Institute and brought with him high hopes in changing the culture of a team badly in need of rebuilding. In an interview with the Chavez County Sports Report, KBIM sports director Tom Ruiz had high praise for Lynn. “Jeff knows his stuff. His insight as a coach really brought it home to our listeners. Just a couple of months ago he called one of the best championship games I have ever heard any color commentator call at this level,” Ruiz
said.“I often told him you’re the high school version of John Gruden. He’s a tremendous friend and I am going to miss him on Friday nights, I am happy for him.” The comparison to Gruden goes beyond the similarities in coaching and broadcasting, it speaks highly to L ynn’s dedication and work ethic as Gruden is notorious for late nights and early mornings and an unrivaled intensity when he steps between the hash-marks. After a 6-2 start to last season it looked as though Lynn had the program ahead of schedule prior to a loss against the Rockets and losing the final three games to end an otherwise promising year. This year it appears as the program has taken a step back as the Coyotes have only mustered up two wins thus far. In what must surely be a disappointing season for L ynn, he has one more shot at redemption and win in possibly the biggest game and certainly the most important one for the season. A win against arch-rival Goddard could put a positive spin on a down year and point the team in the right direction heading into next season, and not to mention add a little job security in the process.

Rockets first year head coach Mike Wahlen leads the charge from the sidelines at the Wool Bowl. PAUL LESSARD FOR THE RECORD
When long time coach Sam Jernigan resigned and moved to Texas last May, the Rocket Football faithful wondered, “now what?” Well, the faithful let out a collective sigh when his longtime assistant, Mike Whalen, was given the head coaching reigns. The committee that did the hiring has been rewarded so far with a successful Rocket campaign as the north side school has gone 7-2 with only two close losses. Whalen had been the defensive coordinator for the majority of the time under Jernigan, and that is still evident now as the Rockets have allowed an average of 11 points per game, including 3 shutouts. Coach Whalen gets the most of his players on the defensive side and stresses hitting hard and staying disciplined. Coach Whalen allows his assistants to deal with a lot of the play calling on both
sides of the ball but he is starting to get some diversity to the O side. As most fans see, the Rockets pound the ball most of the time, but has the ability to spread it out and throw as well. “We need to be able to throw so when teams put 8-9 in the box, we can take advantage,” stated Whalen said following the Piedra Vista game. Whalen has been in 15 state championship games since his coaching began at Goddard in the ‘80s. He has been part of seven state titles. Although he enjoys seeing his athletes over the years win games, he is more proud of them becoming strong leaders and productive citizens. Whalen stresses hard work to not only help with productivity on the field, but also in life later on. Everyone is held accountable on and off the field that way the Goddard Rocket goals can be attained – become men in the future (and, if things go well, win the state title).

Dominic Anaya and Anthony Perales embody coach Lynn’s vision of the future for the Coyotes

NOVEMBER 7, 2014
JONATHAN BOLDT RDR SPORTS EDITOR
It’s easy to get bogged down in stats and records when trying to piece together what has happened to a promising season gone wrong, but looking at effort and personnel can prove to be the salve to a sore season. A quarterback with gaudy numbers who lights up the scoreboard makes evaluating talent and potential easy for the coaching staff. When a team runs a run first offense, those easy evaluations go out the window. Junior quarterback Dominic Anaya and senior linebacker Anthony Perales may not have the dominant physical numbers either but the two embody the change head coach Jeff Lynn is looking to make for the Coyote football program. Anaya is 5 feet 9 inches and 150 pounds but those numbers aside, he is calm and collected under center and is 100 percent in charge of the Coyote of fense. Despite Roswell’s sub-par record, Anaya has established himself as not only the leader of the offense but as a legitimate home-run threat any time he gets into open space. As the Coyotes look to build a contending team, Anaya’s poise will be his greatest attribute followed by his wealth of experience heading into a senior season. Perales may be undersized at 5 feet 5 inches but his grit and determination have been an inspirational aspect to a defense that can be overwhelmed at times this season. While he will not be returning next season, his effort is one that will have a lasting impression on a young program that hopes to be on the rise. These players are only two of a solid core that coach Lynn is banking on to turn around a program and build a program that will return the Coyotes back to the dominant team of decades past.

GODDARD 54, ROSWELL 7 Quarterback David Vega and wideout Jeremy Burrola hooked up for a TD on the game’s fourth play and Goddard rolled to a lopsided win over the Coyotes. Vega completed just five passes on the night, but three of them went for scores. He finished with 125 yards passing. Roswell cut the lead to 14-7 midway through the first, but Goddard scored 40 straight after that to secure its third straight win after starting the year 3-3. In his second start, breakout star David Anaya notched his second career 100-yard rushing game with 118 yards and two TDs on eight carries. He also had a receiving TD on a hook-and-lateral play. Luis Herrera added a pair of TDs in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.

David Anaya started the scoring about five minutes in with a 3-yard run, the first of two TDs on the night for the junior. He added a 32-yard score in the third quarter and had 153 yards on 20 carries. “I have no explanation for it,” said Goddard senior Said Fuentes. “It feels good for me and my other fellow seniors. It feels good, it means a lot for us to beat them.” David Strickland’s 37-yard fumble return for a score put Goddard ahead 14-0 with 1:19 left in the first and Ryan Greene’s 1-yard TD run capped a 21point half. The Rockets added three more scores in the second half — Anaya’s 32-yard run, an 8-yard Greene run and a 9-yard Greene to Brandon Youngblood pass. Roswell finished the night with 126

French finished with 76 yards rushing and was 6 of 11 for 157 yards through the air. David Anaya capped a 4-0 car eer against the Coyotes with a 137-yard, two-TD performance. Goddar d led 6-0 after one befor e adding 15 in the second quarter and 13 in the third quarter. French’s 1-yard TD

Senior quarterback Cameron Neff unloads a pass earlier this season. PAUL LESSARD FOR THE RECORD
Cameron Neff has come a long way from his freshman year playing football for the Goddard Rockets. In his first year he suffered a broken collar bone and was a spectator for most of the games. The Rockets even lost to Roswell High 6-0 that year. Fast forward three years and we see Neff as the starting quarterback and leading the Rockets into this Friday’s game as the prohibitive favorite. Neff has all eyes on him during every play when the Rockets have the ball. Every mistake is magnified in a system that demands near perfection from its fans. Fortunately for Neff, he has the maturity and experience to deal with those distractions and lead a team that is used to success. The Rockets went all the way to the state championship game with Neff leading the way at the quarter-
back spot. Neff has used the past year to grow in all phases of the offensive game. He can block. He can run. He can pass. He has run for close to 1000 yards with numerous touchdowns on the year as well as throwing the ball to a group of receivers when it is needed. Offensively, he is the key block usually for Dean McDaniel or Lukas Gutierrez from the onset of the running game. Neff is also the starting safety and rarely gets beat deep and is possibly the hardest hitter on a team full of hard hitters. The big playmaker can stay with the opposition’s fastest wide-outs, while also being able to wrap up and take down any back that manages to get past the first line of defense. Neff has come a long ways since that dismal freshman year and looks to lead his Rocket squad to a big victory Friday and more big victories down the road.
Shawn Naranjo Photo
Ricky Roybal is off to the races against Lovington earlier this season. Roybal is among a core of players that have never lost a varsity game against Roswell. PAUL LESSARD FOR THE RECORD
Ricky Roybal has been playing sports for years – youth, middle school, and, now he is a three-sport standout at Goddard High School. Like his senior teammates, he has never lost a varsity game to cross-town Roswell High as he prepares for this Friday’s big game. Roybal is a two-way starter for the Rockets playing both wide receiver (typical in the spread formation) and tight end (atypical in the toss formation) on offense and cornerback on defense. On defense, the 6feet-3-inch 190-pound defender can literally dwarf most receivers as teams tend to
throw elsewhere looking for mismatches. If teams run in his direction, good luck trying to block him, and then expect a big hit to conclude the play. On offense, Roybal has some great hands and runs great routes. He has made some great catches downfield and can also make the quick catch-and-run type plays that Goddard uses. Against Fabens, Texas, the Wildcat defense was completely baffled as he caught a teamhigh 4 touchdowns in leading the Rockets to a big 63-13 victory. Against the Coyotes, look for No. 11 to continue to make the big plays – both on offense and defense as the Rockets look to get into the playoffs with another Rocket victory.
