Welcome to our latest Relocation and Visitor’s Guide! Not only will you find it to be a vital resource for
learning about Roswell and southeast New Mexico, but we think you’ll see our unabashed affinity for this wonderful place we call home. This magazine is the result of a partnership between the Roswell Chamber of Commerce and the Roswell Daily Record, two of the many contributors to the vitality of our town. Flip through its pages and you’ll find information about businesses and nonprofits, industries and health facilities, schools and churches, and more community activities than you can fathom — all making this city a warm and welcoming place to live and visit. Consider this magazine an in-depth introduction and a portal into The Alien City, which is actually much more than that one famous Roswell Incident in 1947. We planned and designed this guide to give you the full breadth of our community and to invite you to be a part of it all. Whether you’re thinking of settling here or are just passing through, this guide will help you decide where to go and what to do for fun, relaxation and meaning. We think you’ll come away with a greater appreciation for Roswell’s history, culture and values, all of which make this a great place to live, work and visit. If one chooses to take the historic route, Highway 380 continues west through Lincoln, known for the adventures of Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County Wars, and toward Socorro, where it intersects with Interstate 25.
Highway 70 east takes the traveler to Clovis and Cannon Air Force Base. Highway 285 provides the most direct route to Santa Fe,
New Mexico’s capital, and to Interstate 40, which leads to the city of Albuquerque.
If you do not want to drive, there are multiple cab services and a bus system in Roswell that provide a shuttle service to the Roswell airport. Greyhound bus service provides airport shuttle service for the traveler who wants to fly out of Hobbs, El Paso, Albuquerque or Santa Fe. For those who would like to use a less traditional means of transport, one can always wait for the next UFO out of town.

Roswell History

of the United States of America was just a glimpse of hope and ideas to come. Archeologists are still trying to put the puzzle together of our area’s past, which was inhabited long before the native tribes of Apaches, Navajo and Comanche farmed and hunted the mountains and Pecos River Valley. Our harsh and unusual landscapes were formed millions of years ago, when today’s New Mexico was still part of the supercontinent Pangaea, and an ocean covered this region. Mountains that formed during that time are now eroded, but some of the features of the landscape remain. Our local archeologist clubs (hobby or professional) still find amazing treasures which include fossils, flint rock, stone age tools and shells in the neighboring mesa landscape. The first Europeans to traverse the area were part of Francisco Vasquez de Coronado’s expedition in 1540-1542. Coronado was looking for the fabled Seven Cities of Gold. While he did not find those towns, Coronado and the following missionary monks brought treasures to the area: sheep, horses, pepper trees and grape plants, which would change the Comanches’ and Apaches’ lives forever in turning the pedestrian tribes into the first mounted tribes in the plains and changed the Navajos into artists and weavers. After constructing two adobe buildings, Nebraska immigrant Van Smith named this Chaves County seat (around
1869) to honor his father, Roswell Smith. The previous name Río Hondo recognized a local creek. In 1869, a professional gambler-turned-merchant established a solitary general store on a nearby cattle trail of the cattle baron John Simpson Chisum, who was one of the first Texas ranchers to send his herds to New Mexico, planting the economic seed that grew into Roswell. Chisum obtained land along the Pecos River by right of occupancy and eventually became the owner of a large ranch in the Bosque Grande. Together with the cattlemen Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving they assembled and drove herds of cattle for sale to the Army and to provide cattle to miners in Colorado (1866/67). The first business Van Smith opened was a general store that functioned as a postal service, second a saloon/gambling facility, third a horse race track and fourth a guesthouse for the gambling crowd that came from far and wide for the horse racing. The racetrack ran from east to west, on what is today Second Street in Roswell.

Roswell History Chisum was a business associate of Alexander McSween, a principal figure in the Lincoln County War. Chisum played a behind-the-scenes role in the dispute between the opposing factions of cattle farmers and business owners. Lewis Wallace proclaimed an amnesty for all those involved in the feud, when he took office as governor of New Mexico Territories on October 1, 1878. Roswell History reinvent itself. Walker Air Force Base became an airplane storage facility and, thanks to an amazing gas and oil boom which continues in the 21st century, the future of Roswell looks good. Roswell is diversifying as center for the arts with an International Artist-in-Residence program, focus on tourism, a flexible university which supports the industrial interested students, health care, as well as the new multi-media and upcoming film industry which has found New Mexico and southeast New Mexico to be friendly and welcoming hosts. In 2012, Roswell made history and again became the center of science and adventure, when “Fearless Felix Baumgartner” departed from Roswell Airport in a balloon up into the stratosphere, jumping from a world record 39,045 meters (128,100 ft) and returned safely back to Earth. Baumgartner also set the record for the highest manned balloon flight and fastest speed of a free fall at 1,342 kilometer per hour (834 mph) making him the first human to break the sound barrier outside of a vehicle.
The famed record-breaking aviator Charles Lindbergh and financier Harry Guggenheim were looking to find a location for the scientist Dr. Goddard’s rocket experiments which led them to Roswell, NM. Goddard remained for 12 years working on the secret experiment and record-breaking rocket launches. Without those experiments, the United States would have later not won their race to the moon and begun the human race’s early space exploration. After Goddard’s passing in 1945, his widow started a series of gifts to the Roswell Museum and Art Center of her husband’s rocket technology, and in 1969 the Robert H. Goddard wing was dedicated. The Roswell Rotary Club (Goddard was a member) has since figured prominently in the preservation of his legacy, making Roswell the “Cradle of Space Exploration.”
In 2015, the Roswell Movie Studios opened their doors north of town with a first release and several movies in the works. In 2016, a Western town set will be built on 25 acres with views of Capitán mountain and beautiful sunsets. With Roswell’s history in the “Wild West” lore, the film studio has found an authentic home in the heart of the southwest. Movie crews and actors are going to be a common sight and attraction on the streets of Roswell and the surrounding area.
You can enjoy this exhibit year round at the Roswell Museum and Art Center. The 20th century kept Roswell on the map, first with the Air Force continuing experimental flight training — and, if you believe in it or not — the UFO crash in 1947. After the Air Force moved out in 1967, the city had to

top six industries in Roswell for employment are Thehealthcare and social assistance; retail trade; accom-
modation and food services; education services; agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting; and construction. These industries employ more than 13,000 of Roswell’s approximately 21,000-population work force. With such a broad-based, strong foundation, Roswell has been building a diverse economy with the infrastructure to support almost any industry. Agriculture has been a mainstay of Roswell’s economy since the very first settlers arrived in the late 1800s. Today agriculture accounts for over $1.5 billion of Chaves County’s GDP. From the beginning, cattle growers and wool producers have co-existed along with vast orchards and food growers, all fed by the artesian aquifer, which has maintained Roswell with more available water than any other community in the state of New Mexico. The city of Roswell has the water rights and the water to maintain a city of 300,000 people. With one of the largest dairy industries in the United States, our water supply is still plentiful and is largely due to the careful management of the Pecos Valley Conservancy District, established in the early 20th century. Many of the standards developed for water use in Roswell are now being used all across the western United States. Leprino Foods (the largest mozzarella producer in the world), El Charro Mexican Foods, Fatman’s Beef Jerky and Mountain States Pecan are all thriving and contributing to the economy of Roswell due to the well-established agricultural community. Roswell’s agriculture industry produces cotton and wool for the textile industry, feed to support the livestock, and a well-rounded supply of foods for human consumption. The dairy industry produces over 2 billion pounds of milk annually.
Business and Industry One industry that has been taking off in Roswell for a long time and still has a great deal of untapped potential is the aviation industry. The Roswell International Air Center, formerly Walker Air Force Base, maintains the main 13,000-foot runway, which was built to support the large birds in World War II. It can handle anything that flies. Companies like Aersale, a company that does everything to airplanes except manufacture them; and Dean Baldwin, a company that paints airplanes, have been instrumental in maintaining Roswell’s economy and will be around for a good long time to come as Roswell continues to grow and serve the aviation industry. American Eagle currently has flights to Dallas-Fort began in early 2016.

Business and Industry The clear skies and over 300 average days of sunshine are among the appealing characteristics that draw the aviation industry to Roswell. This is also why Felix Baumgartner chose Roswell to break the world record for a free-fall jump in October 2012. There were more than 53,000 aircraft operations from the Roswell International Air Center in 2013. Another strong industry in Roswell is healthcare. Roswell has two acute-care hospitals that maintain the latest healthcare technologies available; a full-care rehabilitation hospital that offers physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and addiction treatment; a wide variety of clinics and one of the finest nursing education programs in the state of New Mexico. The healthcare industry employs well over 3,000 people locally. For those who wish to advance their careers, Roswell offers a variety of educational opportunities. Alongside the
aforementioned nursing program, there are certification programs in child development, criminal justice, human services, aviation maintenance, air traffic control, HVAC and a host of other career enhancing opportunities.

With over 1,700 people working in education, between the public school system, the New Mexico Military Institute and Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell, an educator has many opportunities to build a career here, as does an education administrator. Roswell’s top 10 employers, by number of employees, are: Roswell Independent School District, Leprino Foods, Eastern New Mexico Medical Center, the City of Roswell, Sam’s Club/Walmart, Krumland Auto Group, New Mexico Military Institute, Community Homecare and Chaves County.

Coming up right alongside the fossil fuel industry, is the renewable energy industry. Nextra Energy Resources is building a $290 million solar array in Roswell that will be able to power 40,000 homes once complete.
Tourism also accounts for a significant part of Roswell’s economy. Lodgers tax receipts were over $1 million in 2014. Arts and Entertainment
Roswell Symphony Orchestra is viewed as one Theof the best in the state. Now in its 55th season, the
Roswell Symphony Orchestra’s musicians come from Roswell and all major cities within a 200-mile radius of Roswell: Lubbock, Amarillo, Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Las Cruces, El Paso, Portales and Alamogordo. Maestro John Farrer became the director of the RSO for the 1972 season. Under his leadership, the orchestra has earned a reputation for musical excellence by sharing with the underserved target audience of southeast New Mexico the talents of professional musicians, many of whom have performed renowned symphonies across the United States, as well as in Canada and Europe. Each year, the orchestra plays five classical concerts, a three-concert Chamber Music Series at the Roswell Museum and Arts Center, five children’s educational concerts for nearly 3,000 elementary school students in Roswell and Artesia and a free Labor Day Concert at Spring River Park and Zoo. The “Send a Senior” program, in which merchants sponsor season tickets, and the RSO Board of Directors match donation, are given away to seniors on a first-come, firstserve basis. If the senior citizen is immobile, transportation is provided from the J.O.Y. Center. These seniors might not otherwise be able to attend the concert. Within these concerts for the season, the Roswell Symphony Orchestra will continue to emphasize educational service to the community, which it has successfully provided and expanded in recent years. The RSO strives to provide the students of southeast New Mexico with an op-

Arts and Entertainment portunity to hear and enjoy the orchestra and some of the great classical works by composers throughout the world. The fourth grade “Young Person’s Concert” is, for many, the beginning of a lifelong love of music, instruments and the arts. The “Shadow Experience” program allows the best musicians from high schools around the area to perform with a professional orchestra and be mentored by some of New Mexico and Texas’ finest musicians. The educational materials library, open to all area teachers, provides ongoing support to the educational community. An effort to make symphonic music available at a reduced price to each and every interested student is at the heart of the “Student Rush” program, implemented for the first time in the 2004-2005 concert year. Through the program, any student may purchase a ticket to attend bethe symphony concerts for just $5, up to 15 minutes be fore the concert begins. upRegardless of culture, heritage, economic situation or up bringing, one thing is certain in this part of New Mexico: Music plays an integral role in society. Roswell is also home to a variety of fantastic entertainers and a community band. Every October, the city hosts a Jazz Festival that is one of the highlights of the music scene. This event lasts several days and is held at numerous venues in the city, including the Roswell Museum and Art Center. Some events are free, including the kickoff concert on the Chaves County Courthouse steps.

Arts & Entertainment For live theater, look no further than the Roswell Community Little Theatre, which has been putting on shows since 1939. RCLT offers a great mix of productions each season. The directors are also actors and everybody works together with the local young and old talent to put together a diverse mix of productions each season — mysteries, musicals, dramas, comedies and dinner theater. RCLT also conducts youth workshops. There are five regular-season productions, as well as involvement with the annual International Film Festival, UFO Festival and Cosmicon, summer youth plays and the Library Halloween Extravaganza. RCLT welcomes volunteers with open arms – behind and on the stage. The ENMU-R Performing Arts Department is working together with the Roswell Film Studio, established in 2015. Students experience hands-on technology that makes a modern movie. The town’s newest theater company is Way Way Off-Broadway, which was founded in 2014. WWOB’s mission and purpose is to entertain, educate, and enrich the community by providing professional-level theatrical experiences for performers and audiences alike. With performances such as “Les Miserables” and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” the theater company entertained the audience with professional high-standard Broadway productions. In 2016 “Seussical the Musical,” Disney’s “Mary Poppins” and Mel Brook’s “Young Frankenstein” will be part of its repertoire. WWOB performs at the ENMU-R Performing Arts Center. The Roswell Film Studio was launched in 2015 with the release of the first movie, “Rodeo and Juliet,” which had its premiere at the Galaxy 8 movie theater in Roswell. The owner, Thadd Turner, announced the groundbreaking for a Western town movie set in April 2016, followed by an Afghan village. Producers worldwide have visited for location check and first productions have begun. Seeing artists and film directors on the streets of Roswell is going to entertain locals and visitors alike. UFO Story
July 1947, something happened northwest of I nRoswell during a severe thunderstorm. Was it a flying saucer? Was it a weather balloon? What happened?
The answer is, nothing for many years, until leading UFO researcher Stanton Friedman came across the story in the early 1980s and began the search for information and witnesses. That research brought him to Roswell looking for the public information officer who had been at Roswell Army Air Field in 1947.

Once it became public, the event known as The Roswell Incident — the crash of an alleged flying saucer, the recovery of debris and bodies and the ensuing cover up by the military — was of such magnitude and so shrouded in mystery that, 69 years later, there are still more questions than answers. Books have been written and TV documentaries have been filmed. Witnesses have come forward. Skeptics have issued rebuttals to the Inci Incident, and the debate continues.
The International UFO Museum & Research Cen Center, located at 114 N. Main Street in Roswell, is a nonprofit corporation founded in the fall of 1991 by Walter Haut, Glenn Dennis, and Max Littell. The museum opened to visitors in the fall of 1992. The UFO museum was organized to inform the public about what has come to be known as “The Roswell Incident” as well as all other aspects of the UFO phenomena. The corporation’s mission statement includes the goal to educate, not convince, the gen general public about the Roswell Incident and all as aspects of the UFO phenomena. Once visitors began making their way to Roswell seeking more information on the 1947 Incident and other UFO phenomena, a number of local residents, in conjunction with the UFO Museum and the Roswell Chamber of Commerce, came up with the idea of celebrating the anniversary of the 1947 Roswell Incident every year during the first week of July. Since 1996, the Roswell UFO Festival has drawn thousands of visitors to the UFO Museum and to Roswell. The three- or four-day event is a fun-filled, entertaining and educational weekend for all who attend. The UFO Museum hosts lectures from leading UFO researchers, including Stanton Friedman, Don Schmitt, Tom Carey, Kathleen Marden, Peter Robbins, Derrel Sims, Yvonne Smith, and Travis Walton. MainStreet Roswell brings together numerous vendors along Main Street with food, memorabilia, music and live entertainment. Other activities include alien costume contests for humans and pets, an evening light parade, carnival rides and Fourth of July fireworks. tesia housed the famous German Rommel African Corps, who were sent as prisoners of war directly to southeast New Mexico from Africa. According to their guards, the POWs loved it here after almost starving to death in the desert of Africa. They worked the land, helped with construction and had more freedom than other POWs. You can still see reminders of their presence. In Artesia, the POWs crafted the windows in the Presbyterian Church. Dexter is home to the Dexter Fish Hatchery and Technology Center, which is dedicated to advancing fish culture techniques for imperiled fishes of the American Southwest. Lake Van, just east of Dexter, and the site for the Milkman Triathlon, has a nice camping site, RV area, a restaurant and a swimming pool.
- Artesia The small town of Artesia, previously known as Stegman, was born in the 1880s with the expansion of the railroad. Among its more wellknown residents is Postmaster Sally Chisum Stegman, the niece of cattle baron John Chisum. Legend has it that Billy the Kid loved Stegman dearly and would often visit her. Eventually, the town’s name was changed to Artesia because of the vast artesian wells that run just below the surface. The discovery of oil and gas changed the sleepy little settlement into a vibrant community. The Navajo Refinery, located on the east side of Main Street, is listed among one of the largest refineries in the United States. Since its initiation in 1939, the refinery has brought wealth and economic growth to southeast New Mexico. During football season, the entire town turns orange — the color of its high school team, the Artesia Bulldogs. The most charming aspect in the town is the intact Main Street community, with wonderfully unique boutiques and shops. Besides oil and small businesses, the town is home to the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC); the guarded compound is a city in itself.

Travel Tips in the Area Artesia is also very proud of its art community. From theater to live music, the community hosts a variety of artistic and cultural events. The museum and arts center boasts regional photographs, Native American artifacts and a farm and ranch display. The library in Artesia is home to one of Peter Hurd’s murals, which is called, “The future belongs to those who prepare for it.”
- Carlsbad Carlsbad offers many fun activities. First and foremost is the beautiful Carlsbad Caverns National Park. The caverns might not be the largest in the United States, but they are known to be the most beautiful. If you are good on foot, we highly recommend walking down the steep 1¼mile (2 km) descent, equivalent to about 79 stories from the cave entrance to the Big Room. You can walk alone with an audio guide, which you can rent at the entrance, or request a ranger-guided tour.
In Lincoln County, every season has its own beauty. From peaceful winter snow, to the renewal of spring, warm summers and crisp colorful falls, Lincoln is a place to explore the beauty of southeast New Mexico.
- Ruidoso The beautiful town of Ruidoso lies high above Roswell on the gorgeous southern end of the Rockies. In every season, it is a great place to visit. In the heat of summer, its cool weather offers a break from the heat of Roswell, and in winter, Ruidoso is home to a variety of skiing adventures. Enjoy a cup of hot cocoa at Ski Apache from Thanksgiving to Easter after coming in from a day of shredding powder on the slopes. When you’re not skiing, try your luck in a hand of poker at one of the town’s two casinos, Inn of the Mountain Gods and Billy the Kid Casino.
Brantley Lake State Park is located between Artesia and Carlsbad. This southern desert park is a refreshing place to boat, fish, picnic and camp. For more information go to emnrd.state.nm.us/spd/brantleylakestatepark.html. Lake Carlsbad’s Beach Park is great for water sports and other events. For more information, visit cityofcarlsbadnm.com
West of Roswell: - Lincoln A short roadtrip to one of New Mexico’s most gorgeous historical treasures takes you to Lincoln. Driving through the valley, which is very astutely called “Bonito Valley,” with the little Bonito Creek running along your drive, takes you back in time. Lincoln features a fabulous museum located in the former Lincoln County Courthouse and jail. These buildings are where Billy the Kid made his famous escape.
Racing in the Ruidoso Downs has had a long tradition. It is the only horse track in the United States and Europe that has a separate quarterhorse straightaway and oval thoroughbred tracks, giving spectators a unique venue. Nestled in the cool pines of Lincoln County, the track offers world-class racing in a down-home environment. Today, nobody can tell a war took place in Lincoln Coun- During the live racing season, spectators are treated to 9 ty.
