Lake Arthur is looking to end playoff drought By J.T. Keith Record sports editor For Lake Arthur head coach Jose Porras, seasons of 3-5 and 2-7 won’t get it. The last two seasons have all but doomed the Panthers. In 2017 they started 1-3, and in 2018, 0-3, before winning two games. The team that Lake Arthur is chasing is back-to-back state champion Animas. If Lake Arthur has any hopes of making it back to winning the championship, all hopes rest on the powerful right arm of junior quarterback Adrian Guillen. Guillen is bigger than anyone on the team and bigger than the coaching staff. He looks like a JaMarcus Russell, formerly of the

Los Angles Raiders. Depth could be an issue this season. The team only has six players out and cannot sustain any injuries. The team has playmakers aplenty in the shifty Arian Rangel and the elusive Angel Fierro. For the team to go far this season, they will have to win on the road, stay healthy and stop people. “I have told the players,” Porras said, “I’m always going to put you in position to be successful. I can’t block for you or tackle for you, but it’s my job to put you in that position. That’s all you can ask for.” Porras enters his 20th season on the sideline and faces a new challenge, trying to restore

the team to it’s winning ways after the last two seasons. Porras has stayed upbeat and still believes in his kids. He knows how important it is to the community and knows it’s just a matter for time before the kids are able to turn their fortunes around. Porras’ roots run deep in Lake Arthur, to when he was a water boy running water to his older brother, Amador, and his teammates in 1987 during Lake Arthur’s first championship. “Those kids that come out know what it takes to be a champion,” Porras said. “They know what it takes to get there, especially be a part of a storied program that Lake Arthur is. Gateway Christian will be young and tested this season By J.T. Keith Record sports editor Coming into last season, Gateway Christian coach Shaun Wigley didn’t want another 5-4-1 season. He didn’t get that. In fact, his team was a high-flying offense — they put up points like a pinball arcade game. What should have been a victory lap became Wigley’s hardest job as a coach in the championship game. Wigley had to convince his team not to take the Tatum football team lightly. Especially after his team had put it on them twice, 41-6 in the season opener, and 53-28 in a week-six game. What happened? No one saw it coming. Tatum pulled off an improbable upset and beat Gateway Christian 28-20 to win the state title. It was a lesson that was not forgotten by the boys on that team that play baseball. “We made it there,” Wigley said, “We just didn’t get it done and that’s the truth. To be honest it was the worst game we played all year. Some of that was that Tatum played really good and we didn’t. It came down to execution. We had everything going our way, excuses are like everything else, they led to the same result. We got there, the kids played hard we just didn’t win it.” Wigley has to do his best coaching job
because his team is young. The Warriors will be a lot of teams’ championship game since it has been a while since they have beaten Gateway Christian. Wigley has already turned the page and is excited about this season. What his team lacks is reps and experience. Some of his players will be playing football for the first time ever. Gateway graduated seven starters and nine players total. He will have two players back from last year’s team in running back Jacob Swann and Jeremiah Capps. Brandon Reynolds played last year and will be counted on to go both ways this season at defensive tackle and starting center. “We’re going to be young starting over,” Wigley said. “We’ll have eighth-graders, freshmen. Anytime you lose your whole team and there is a gap between, small school football, it’s a year of rebooting. Because of the lack of players and teams in eight-man football, Gateway Christian will play some teams twice. “We work hard for a reason,” Wigley said. “Life will punch you in the mouth. You get a report of cancer, or some other bad news, there are things tougher in life than football. We just try to coach them up. This year we’re working and rebuilding. A lot of these kids just
haven’t played football. These kids have played more baseball than football for years.” Wigley says he has more fun coaching athletes that don’t know a lot but want to improve. He knows his young athletes need him and his coaches like a person needs air. He feels like the difference this year will be the team will have a lot to learn in reps and experience. The Warriors will run a variety of offenses, with the spread being their favorite. Their new quarterback is sophomore Hurley Breedyk. They will show a wing look, a tight formation, and a swinging gate formation to keep teams off-balance. On defense, depending on who they’re playing, they will run a four- or five-man line. Also, they will run a 4-3-1 and a 4-2-2. Wigley mentioned Joel Perry to start at free safety. “Yes, this will kind of be a reboot,” Wigley said. “It won’t matter if we lost to a team 100 times. Teams are always wanting to beat Gateway. That’s just part of it. I take that as a compliment. We’re looking to get better week by week.” Gateway Christian will play at 7 p.m. on Friday against Tatum.

Dexter could surprise teams sleeping on them By J.T. Keith Record Sports Editor His players love playing for him — now they call him Swaggy-D, as in Arturo Duran, the ultimate player’s coach. In his first year on the sidelines as the head man, Duran took over a team that finished 2017 at 6-6 and lost in the playoffs. Now, after last year’s championship, he is sitting in rare air, since he is one of the few to have a Blue Trophy as a player and one as a coach. In his first season, Dexter never had to leave home in the playoffs. Dexter won three playoff games against Hatch Valley, 35-14, West Las Vegas, 35-7, and Robertson, 22-12. Dexter went 11-2 with a senior-laden
team. Duran believes this team has some good news coming. He believes that other teams will be sleeping on his Demons, especially early on. He feels like if his offensive line can stay healthy and control the ball, they have a chance to make a deep run into the postseason this year. Duran doesn’t know who will be under center when the team takes the field against Santa Rosa. He has to replace steady Jarren Amaro. Amaro improved on his reads and could throw the ball downfield when they needed to, to keep teams from stacking the line. The team will have to replace Sergio Ramirez, Nick Cobos, Jacob Amaya and safe-
ty valve Jordan Marquez, who was able to catch TDs near the end zone. This year, especially, the team will look to run their vaunted wishbone. Duran will sometimes make it a wing as well, when they want to run tempo. Fullback will be hard-running Tyler Brisco, and he will rotate three running backs as well: Marvin Johnson, Jr., Ricardo Contreras, and Javin Marquez. “We are going to try to control the clock,” Duran said, “and line of scrimmage and go from there. We have P.J. Austin, Fernando Acosta and Grady Harris returning on the offensive line. That will be the strength offensively. We have good athletes

Hagerman looking for playoffs again
Friday, August 23, 2019
By J.T. Keith Record Sports Ediitor
Many Hagerman football fans were questioning the hiring of Guy Rivers — it quickly went from “Guy who?” to “We got the right Guy.” Rivers could run for mayor of Hagerman and win if he leads his team to another playoff. Rivers has fans thinking back to the good old days when coach Casey Crandall led the team to the playoffs two years in a row. He also led them to a state title with a 35-6 victory over Capitan. Rivers has his team on that kind of trajectory. Hagerman won’t be sneaking up on anybody this season after going 4-6 last season. If that wasn’t enough, Hagerman has the motivation to get back to the playoffs and seek a
return game against Texico. Texico had the game in-hand last year and was up 22-0 with five minutes left. Rivers had pulled his starters so players could experience playing in a playoff game. The Texico coach, instead of running the clock out, left his starters in and threw deep to score. He managed to get the ball back with two minutes left and threw the ball deep again to run the score up, leaving a bad taste in the mouth of Rivers. Hagerman seems to have replaced starting quarterback Jakob Bejarano with his brother, sophomore Jonah Bejarano. There are differences between the two: Jonah doesn’t have the arm
strength of Jakob, but he’s more athletic and can run the ball. He has the ability to scramble and, if his receivers are covered, pull the ball down and run. Jonah is a sprinter on the track team, also. Look for Hagerman to run some multiple sets as well as some tight sets on offense. The Bobcats will run some spread and five wideouts. On offense, they will return four starters On defense they will run a base 50 look, with a man look, and at times will flash cover two. The difference is they will be moving All-State safety Jose Rodriguez, as a sophomore, back to his natural position. Last season Rivers moved him to defensive end. Rodriguez

Artesia looks to win close games and play for title By J.T. Keith Record sports editor It was not the year Artesia football is used too. The 30-time state champions lost games they are used to winning. Life was hard at quarterback as Trent Taylor played well but was injured often. What looked like a setback turned out to be one of the best things to happen to the Bulldogs. With Taylor injured early in the season, they became more dangerous when they moved 6-foot-4 receiver Clay Houghtaling to quarterback. He started six-games last season when Taylor was injured. “Clay played well for us,” Artesia head coach Rex Henderson said. “He learned a lot and you could see him gaining
confidence each week. I’m pleased with his progress this summer. He’s done a good job with leadership this season and overall accuracy.” Houghtaling’s presence at quarterback gave them a different look and teams could no longer play the pass, because he was just as apt to pull the ball down and run it if nothing was there. His feet got the Bulldogs out of a lot of trouble. He was also the one who threw the twopoint conversion to beat Roswell in Artesia in week eight, 36-35. Last season Artesia started 0-2 and it was the first time in a long time they had lost the Eddy County War to rival Carlsbad, 28-14. With the loss of 38 seniors they just
seem to reload, because they have 20 seniors this season. On offense look for them to run their spread ball-control passing game. On the offensive line they will have a senior and two juniors returning to anchor the line. At the skill positions they play a lot of players and Henderson expects to continue in the same vain, so replacing Chaney Hardt, J.T. Bustamante and A.J. Estrada will be difficult, but not as hard as breaking in new players. On the defense, look for their line to be one of their strongest positions. The weakness will be at linebacker where the starters will be all new. The secondary is perhaps

Goddard returns to dominance
By J.T. Keith Record Sports Editor Goddard bounced back in a big way in 2018. The boys in blue were ranked the No. 1 team in the state and went undefeated until the last game of the regular season. Goddard established both lines of scrimmage, offensively and defensively. On offense, they will have to find a replacement for graduated senior Dalton Bowles. Bowles had a dream season last year as he ran for 425 yards against Artesia. He led Goddard downfield and placed them in field goal range as Jacob Wieser kicked the ball through the
uprights with 2 seconds left to beat Artesia, 31-28, for the second time in three years. “We are looking forward to another big year in 2019,” Goddard coach Chris White said. “This year’s team will feature a group of talented and experienced players. Seniors like Robert Aragon, Hunter Beene, Timmy Burrell, Ryan Lee, Gabriel Beltran, Connor Villalpando have been starters since they were sophomores. We also have a strong group of juniors with several returning starters from their class as well.” Goddard won a playoff game when they demolished Deming and were one game away

from the championship game against Roswell, but were defeated by Los Lunas in the semifinals. “We have several players getting looks to play at the next level,” White said. “Hunter Beene who plays tight end and defensive end already has a couple of offers. Larry Luna, a 6’5 280pound junior will return at offensive tackle/defensive line and is getting attention from Division 1 schools. Look for Nate Stone, a 6’2 junior, to be a deep threat catching the ball. Nate is a junior who returns from last year’s team.” This is White’s fourth season as the head coach at Goddard and

Lynn and Coyotes claim first title By J.T. Keith Record Sports editor Ain’t no party like a Coyote party in the Wool Bowl for the Blue Trophy. Many were expecting a thriller and a nail-biter. It went something like: punt return score, interception, score, interception return for a score, and soon Los Lunas was saying, “Who let the Coyotes out?” The game was easier to play in than it was to get there. After getting spanked by Hobbs last season at home, 42-20, Roswell turned around the following week, went on the road and beat the No. 1 team with the allstate quarterback, upending Los Lunas, 42-20. Roswell was on a roll until they lost 36-35 on a
fake extra point to Artesia, in Artesia. The game came down to the last possession. Roswell would steamroll Alamogordo to set up a season-ending winner-take-all with the No. 1 team in the state, Goddard. Roswell needed to win the game by three points and they did, 24-21, to give coach Jeff Lynn his first district title. In a season where Roswell lost two of their starting offensive linemen, Lynn rolled out the nextman-up mentality and they held the fort until they could come back. Lynn, in his seventh season, has the program where they are starting to just reload — they have depth behind the starters and if for some reason a player is injured
CHEVROLET BUICK CADILLAC
or something unforeseen happens, they might not be able to get their spot back, that’s just how deep Roswell is at all of their positions. “I just told our team,” Lynn said. “If you don’t practice you don’t play, because there is a guy right behind you that will take your place.” The main question would be who would be under center, and that will be Dominic Nava. Nava has an explosiveness that wasn’t there from quarterback Ethan Valenzuela — one of the question marks will be, will Nave be able to lead the team in the calm, poised manner that Valenzuela did.

and spread the ball around. Taking the snaps will be Guillen, who has improved his distance on throwing the ball downfield and improved his accuracy. To give the team a different look, Lake Arthur will run their wing-set to catch teams off guard. “We have Guillen under center,” Porras said. “He ‘s gotten bigger and he is a load to bring down. He’s been in our system since eighth grade.” Coach Porras has been to the championship game 10 times, winning five times with the last title coming in 2012. He’s expecting good things out of the team this season and he certainly expects to win more than two and three games this season. “Football means a lot to this community,” Porras said. “The past two years have been kind of down, but it goes with it. You have the alumni, and true fans to come out and support these kids — it means a lot to them and me.” Lake Arthur opens on the road at 7 p.m. on Friday against Elida.

coming out — we’ll be all right.” Defensively they return five starters with Austin, Johnson and Acosta on the defensive line. The team will run a 34 as a base defense. At linebackers, Brisco and Johnson started. On the corner is Juan Fuentes, who played as a freshman last season and Martin Meraz will start on the other side. “Our goal is to keep everyone healthy,” Duran said. “You don’t have to go undefeated to win state. Hope Christian was undefeated and was upset by Robertson in the playoffs, and we beat Robertson in the state championship game. Show up for every game, because you don’t know
what will happen.” With his returning players having experienced a championship, he feels like they know the hard work and dedication it takes to win. Duran hopes that fact won’t be lost on the players returning. For Dexter, it all begins in the trenches and whoever is taking the snaps under center. That’s how their season will go. Last year at this time all anyone was talking about was the new coach. This year people are talking about how young the Demons are. Duran is OK with that as his team gets ready to play District 4-3A football. Dexter hosts Santa Rosa at 7 p.m. Friday.

is a headhunter with a knack for separating the ball from the ball carrier. On defense, they will return nine starters. “At this level,” Rivers said, “teams feel like they can just man up on you and go. He knows how to come up and get the ball.” A big key for Rivers is he picked up an offensive line coach, Hector Arvelo. Arvelo is the son-in-law of Rivers and played offensive line at Central Florida. He played with Blake Bortles. One of Rivers’ weak spots was the offensive line, he never played
2 0 1 9 R o s w e l l D a i l y R e c o rd P i g s k i n P r e v i e w it and had a hard time coaching it. Rivers has junior varsity coach Robert Bundy returning for a second year, which should help with continuity. Bundy will have two years in the systems and knows what coach Rivers is looking for. “Having Arvelo coach the line helps,” Rivers said. “The line already looks better. I didn’t play line, I wasn’t a lineman. I was a 6-foot, 180-pound defensive back.” For Hagerman, it helps that they have more players come out for football. Last year at this time of the season, they couldn’t hit for fear of injury. Eunice is still going to be the team to beat in the district, with Jal and Loving being right there as well. “I believe we are in the toughest district in the state,” Rivers said. “We had four teams make the
playoffs and I expect four teams to make it this year. These kids know we love them and they understand we are here for them.” Rivers played at Clovis for Eric Raonhaus, where he was an all-state defensive back. He feels like the team could be better than last year’s team and not have a better record because of the competition. “I believe we can make the playoffs,” Rivers said. “I truly believe that we can win a game in the playoffs. I think the difference is that when kids know you care about them they will give you everything they have. Whether we win or lose I love my kids.” Rivers has coined the phrase, “The power of the past to force the future.” Hagerman travels to Capitan for a 7 p.m., game on

their strongest unit on defense, they will start two seniors with younger players filling in. Special teams will have new players for the first time in two years. Artesia plays a tough non-conference schedule, which Henderson believes helps them when it comes to district time. He hopes to reverse the trend of losing close games. Last season they lost two games as the clock ran out. Artesia lost to Goddard, 31-28, when they kicked a field goal with two seconds left to win, and Roswell’s Dylan Tucker caught a touchdown with no time left on the clock to knock them out of the playoffs, 48-42. “We’re a play away,” Henderson said. “Roswell goes and makes a play, we’re going toe-toe with Roswell and we did it twice. We beat
2 0 1 9 R o s w e l l D a i l y R e c o rd P i g s k i n P r e v i e w them on the last play at our place and they beat us on the last play at their place. The level that Roswell is at right now, their close to the biggest school in our class. They just have more athletes to pick from right now. They got good speed, good size and they’re running a good system. Goddard has a philosophy of taking three classes and taking a handful of athletes and making them tough. How do you prepare to see those types of people, we have to go up in class and play a tough schedule to get us ready? I feel like speed separates the top teams in our class.” Henderson knows that the season will come down to what they do in district, those final three games of the season. Artesia opens on the road with the Eddy County War game against Carlsbad at 7 p.m. Friday.

18th year coaching football at GHS. White’s record is 19-13-1 overall as head coach. Goddard has been in the playoffs all three years of Coach White’s tenure. Goddard is looking to continue with their streak of reaching the playoffs, which now stands at 17 consecutive years and dates back to the last three head coaches. Last season was a great year for Goddard football, with the boys in blue going 9-2-1 and reaching the semifinals. “This is an outstanding group of young men,” White said, “who have worked extremely hard to represent Roswell.” Goddard opens on the road against St. Pius X at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

There will come a game this season when Nava will have to win a game with his decision making and throwing the ball. Things that no one can answer until he is faced with the situations. There is no doubt that the difference at quarterback this year is that Nava can turn the corner and take it to the house instead of getting 15 yards. Another serious query is, who do they have as a backup if Nava gets injured? An injury could derail their championship aspirations. There will be three running backs competing to take the place of Justin Carrasco. Then there is Player of the Year candidate Jasia Reese. He will not play both ways this
2 0 1 9 R o s w e l l D a i l y R e c o rd P i g s k i n P r e v i e w season as Lynn wants to go to a one-way system to give his players a chance to get rest and be more explosive on both sides of the ball. “We’re still working on a running back,” Lynn said. “We have three, but we have to figure out who he is and get more constant at that position.” Lynn mentioned that his team is good at the wide receiver spot and the offensive line as well. Last season an unknown for Roswell was the offensive line, they had to replace every starter. This year that position is a strength. On defense, Lynn mentioned Armando Silva to take the place of New Mexico Preps Player of the Year Cade Manzanares. Last year Silva was on the defensive line and his agility has made him into a linebacker.
On the defensive line, Lynn feels like Elijah Morales has a chance to be All-State. Look for Zach Buckmister and Gabriel Garcia to play a lot. In the defensive backfield look for Joel Sanchez to be there making big plays as he did last year. Special teams will be good — Lynn is looking at a former soccer player to kick extra points and field goals. Reese will be returning punts. “This is Dominic Nava’s, Jasia Reese’s and Joel Sanchez’s senior year as well,” Lynn said. “We got to do our very best for those kids because they have one year left, and that’s this year.” Roswell will open the season on the road at Ruidoso at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Colts, Montoya look to change culture with season By J.T. Keith Record Sports editor It’s tough playing a 4A schedule at New Mexico Military Institute when head coach Randy Montoya doesn’t know what players will show up for camp. In 2017, the team went through growing pains with a bunch of sophomores, as the went 1-9. The silver lining was the team stuck together and after reclassification, moved to 3A. Montoya in 2018 used what he had, and that was a new offense. He went with the inverted bone and used his huge offensive line to slow the game and take time off the clock. Using a punishing running game, the Colts started off 5-1 last year
and made the playoffs, losing to Hatch Valley. NMMI went 6-4 for the season. One of the things Montoya does is tinker, and this season he has gone from the inverted bone to more of an I formation, where they will still use their big line, but they will want to be more multidimensional. “The biggest thing is my kids were sophomores,” Montoya said. “They took their lumps and stuck together and they kept trying. Last year they proved they could play after taking their lumps ...” The team has some backs and receivers with some quicks and shakes that can take it to the house once the ball is in their hands, and of course they have their groundand-pound when they

need to close teams out in the last four minutes of a game. One of the luxuries Montoya has this season is experience, the team
has 20 returners back. The strong aspect of the offense will be their offensive line — all of their starters return. Six offensive starters return. At
quarterback will be Carlos Xibille, he was the backup last year and second-best running back in terms of rushing yards gained. On defense, they will

run their 4-4 split and with all-state linebacker Arturo Cuen back, the defense returns nine starters. The defensive line will be the anchor of the team on that side of the ball. On defense, they will run a 4-4 split. Last season, they lost to eventual 3A champions Dexter in a game that was closer than the score indicated. Montoya leads his team back to the playoffs and suffered the early-round loss to Hatch Valley, but Montoya will take that season as opposed to 2017. “I expect the district to be tough,” Montoya said. “I expect Dexter, the defending state champion, to be the favorite and Tularosa to be tough. They were young last year, but they will be there.”

NMMI looking to make a move up
By J.T. Keith Roswell Daily Record
After shocking the junior college football nation in the opening week of the season with a 32-30 upset over the No. 3 team in the nation, Arizona Western College, the NMMI Broncos won three games last season and are looking to build upon those results. Coach Joe Forchtner’s main concern is finding a capable defense this season. The team will move back to the confines of their home stadium, the Wool Bowl. The Broncos have not played at the Wool Bowl since their last game in 1980 when they played against Navarro College and won 14-12. When
they open their season they will step onto a field with new turf. On offense, the team must replace Gavin Hardison, who started for part of the season last year. He played well enough for the University of Texas El Paso to offer him a scholarship. Hardison was one of 22 players that transferred to go play at four-year schools. Former Goddard product Chase Kyser will take over as offensive coordinator for the Broncos. As head coach at NMMI, Forchtner’s record is 32-30. He has been head coach from 2014 to present, He is currently in his sixth season. The team returns 13 lettermen with former Goddard football player Diego Miranda
