The benefits to shopping on Black Friday
Metro Creative Services
Black Friday is a holiday season phenomenon that entices shoppers out of their homes, sometimes in the wee hours of the morning. Many stores begin their Black Friday promotions on Thanksgiving night, while others may wait until midnight to open their doors to deal-hungry holiday shoppers. Thanks to the crowds, some shoppers may be intimidated by Black Friday and opt to avoid stores entirely on the day after Thanksgiving. But there are a host of benefits to shopping on Black Friday that can compel hesitant shoppers to join the festive fray. • Deals: Black Friday is a consumer-friendly day on which savvy shoppers can find great deals on big-ticket items. Big-ticket items like electronics, including televisions, smartphones and tablets, are often heavily discounted on Black Friday. Such deals may only be for a certain period of time or until a predetermined amount of inventory has been sold, so shoppers should do their research and prioritize which items are most important to them in advance of Black Friday. While Black Friday occurs during the holiday season when many people are busy looking for gifts for

Such giveaways make great stocking stuffers, enabling Black Friday shoppers to get some shopping done without spending a dime. • Budget-friendly: Budget-conscious holiday shoppers may find that Black Friday allows them to give great gifts without compromising their personal finances. In its second

annual holiday debt survey, MagnifyMoney found that consumers who took on debt during the 2016 holiday season were poised to begin the new year with an average of $1,003 worth of new debt. Shopping on Black Friday might help many shoppers reduce the amount of debt they take on during the holiday season. Shoppers hesitant to join the Black Friday fray might want to consider the many benefits to shopping on one of the busiest shopping days of the year before making their final decision.

The term “black Friday” was originally associated with gold prices and manipulation on the part of speculators Jay Gould and James Fisk. This scandal occurred in September 1869. Commodity prices plummeted 50 percent as a result, and the term “black Friday” was coined to refer to that drop. The phrase “black Friday” also became famous for all the wrong reasons in 1966. Philadelphia police used it to refer to the Friday traffic jams and crowding in downtown stores from tourists and shoppers who flooded into the city in advance of the Army-Navy football game held the Saturday after Thanksgiving each year. Bigger crowds and rowdiness contributed to long hours and stressful shifts for local police.
Black Friday reinvented
The retail industry started using the term
“Black Friday” in the late 1980s. Spin doctors turned previously negative connotations into positive ones by associating the phrase with stores turning a profit and moving accounting ledgers from “red to black” thanks to big year-end sales. Retailers and consumers rallied around low-cost “doorbusters” and other discounted prices. Interestingly enough, according to the National Retail Federation, Black Friday really hasn’t been the most lucrative day for retailers over the years. In fact, greater profits and larger crowds are often seen on the last Saturday preceeding Christmas.
Shopping weekend evolves
While Black Friday may have been the catalyst, in recent years shoppers have made the entire weekend of Black Friday a lucrative one for retailers. Many stores now open on Thanksgiving and extend sales through the entire weekend. Small Business Saturday and Sunday promote patronizing momand-pop stores. Cyber Monday emerged when online shopping became a popular way to grab deals, and it marks the close of the opening weekend of the holiday shopping season. In 2017, Black Friday weekend attracted 174 million shoppers who spent an average of $335.47, according to the NRF.

Small Business Saturday helps local economy
By Alex Ross Roswell Daily Record
The holiday shopping season kicks off today, with waves of customers rushing into big-name retail stores, while others take to the internet to hunt for bargains. Small businesses can also stand to reap some of the benefits of the early holiday shopping onslaught, especially on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, a day known as Small Business Saturday. Small Business Saturday was started in 2010 by credit card giant American Express as a way to support small businesses and help local economies weather the Great Recession, according to the American Express website. Candace Purcella, executive director of the Roswell Chamber of Commerce, said one benefit of shopping at small and locally-owned businesses is

that money is much more likely to remain in the community, as opposed to shopping at a large retailer. “The bottom line is that dollar stays in the community,” she said. And with a strong economy, area merchants are optimistic. “Several of our businesses have said it has been a very, very good year for them,” said Molly Boyles, a business owner and president of MainStreet Roswell, an organization of local merchants that works to draw attention to Roswell’s downtown area. By patronizing smaller, locally-owned businesses people are not only investing in a product and benefiting the company, but spending also helps employees and their families — and is a way to give back to businesses that are most likely to invest in the community. “How often do you see,
say for instance Amazon sponsoring a high school child in their sports? You don’t see that very often, but you do see our local businesses, our local banks, our attorneys and our hospitals sponsoring these children in their activities and keeping that local,” Purcella said. One place where small businesses can be found in droves is downtown Roswell. The downtown area though is often overshadowed by the chain stores and mall on the north side of town, and is sometimes even ignored by Roswell residents, Boyles said. “A lot of people think downtown is just alien souvenirs and it is not,” she said. The downtown area has a wide variety of businesses that sell goods ranging from crafts and art, to antiques, valuable rocks and more. “We’ve gotten so focused

on the mall and the cluster of retail stores in the north that people are not realizing how much of an opportunity they have to buy unusual and unique items downtown,” Boyles said. Though the big box stores and internet carry the trendy commonplace items, small businesses carry items that are more rare as well as rarer, more memorable items that can’t be found in chain stores. Customer service and care also tends to be better at smaller brick and mortar stores than chain stores. “If you try to go into any of the big box stores and get somebody to help you find a specific item or ask if they are able to ship something for you, you are not going to get their attention,” Boyles said. She said the key to boosting interest in small businesses is to draw people to the downtown area.
The Chamber and Main Street Roswell will work to do just that on Small Business Saturday. The Chamber in conjunction with MainStreet Roswell will host Shop Small Roswell. Purcel la said the event will take place at Resichman Park at 308 North Main St. from 8:50 to 9:20 a.m and feature a ribbon-cutting and a reading of a proclamation by Mayor Dennis Kintigh. Area businesses will also give away items to people who come by. People will be encouraged on Small Business Saturday to post a selfie of themselves when they walk into certain local businesses and post it on Facebook or Instagram. Main Street Roswell should be tagged in the photo along with the name of the store and the hash tag #ShopSmallRoswell2018. Boyles said no purchase is necessary but all self-

Cooking and glazing a moist and cured ham? It’s in the bag Christina Stock Photo
A good apple strudel should have six layers of thin and crispy phyllo dough.
Apple strudel — A twirling cake with a long history
By Christina Stock Roswell Daily Record
A special treat for the fall and holiday season originates in Austria and Germany — it’s apple strudel. Strudel means twirl and this cake — once cut in slices — shows the sweet and rich twirl of dough, raisins and apples. The legend says that the apple strudel recipe was brought to Europe when the Austrians annexed the kingdom of Hungary in the mid-1800s. The Hungarians enjoyed that recipe centuries before it became popular in Austria. Allegedly it was created during the rise of Constantinople in 330 A.D. when it became the capitol of the Holy Roman Empire under its first Christian ruler, Constantine I. A fun fact: They also invented the fork, which the Venetians brought to Italy. Ingredients: 2¼ lb apples 2 cups fresh breadcrumbs 4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted ¾ cup granulated sugar 1 tsp cinnamon
½ cup raisins 1/2 cup rum (optional) Grated rind of 1 lemon 1¼ lb package of frozen phyllo, thawed ½ cup unsalted butter, melted 1/2 cup confectioners sugar
Instructions: Only for adults: put the raisins in a container and fill with rum. Close the container and place in fridge overnight. Preheat oven to 350° F. Finely chop the apples and put into a large bowl. Add breadcrumbs, 4 tbsp melted butter, sugar, cinnamon, raisins (soaked in rum or plain), grated lemon rind and stir together. On a damp towel, lay two sheets of phyllo dough and brush with melted butter. Place another one to two sheets on top and brush with butter. Continue until you have six layers. Put the apple mixture down the center of the pastry, leaving a 1-inch border around the outside. Fold in the short sides and then roll up like a jelly roll. Put strudel on a greased baking sheet with the seam
side down. Better, if you have a non-stick baking sheet. Brush with remaining melted butter. Cut ¼ inch deep slashes diagonally across top with a very sharp knife. (To let the steam escape) Bake for 30-40 minutes or until golden brown. Keep an eye on it at the end, so it doesn’t get burned. Let cool before sprinkling with powdered sugar and serving. Makes 8-10 servings. Tips and suggestions: It is extremely work-intensive to make your own phyllo dough — it has to be thin as paper and large enough to cover a table. Very few people — outside of a bakery — make their own dough in Austria and Germany anymore. After all, the quality of the frozen product is excellent. Traditionally tart and starchy apples are used, such as the Boskoop, but you can use any apple that you would use in a pie. The strudel is served in Austria with vanilla sauce. Instead, you can serve the pastry warm with vanilla ice cream, which the Germans prefer.

This undated photo provided by America’s Test Kitchen in October 2018 shows glazed spiral-sliced ham in Brookline, Mass. This recipe appears in the cookbook “All-Time Best Holiday Entertaining.” By America’s Test Kitchen Heating and glazing a cured ham seems effortless, but many recipes yield leathery meat in an overly sweet glaze. We wanted to guarantee moist meat in a nuanced glaze. Bone-in hams, labeled “with natural juices,” have the best flavor and spiral-sliced ones make carving a cinch, but too much time in the oven can ruin even the best ham on the market, so we focused on reducing the cooking time. Soaking the ham in hot water shaved off a full hour, and using an oven bag further reduced the cooking time while also containing the ham’s
moisture. We heated a mixture of sweet and savory pantry staples for two tempting glaze options. You may bypass the 1 1/2-hour soaking time, but the ham will be less juicy and the heating time must increase to 18 to 20 minutes per pound. We prefer a tapered shank ham but a rounded sirloin ham will work here. If there is a tear or hole in the ham’s inner covering, wrap it in several layers of plastic wrap before the hot-water soak. If you do not wish to use an oven bag, place the ham cut side down in the roasting pan and cover tightly with aluminum foil, adding 3 to 4 minutes per pound to
the heating time.
Glazed spiral-sliced ham
Servings: 12-14 Start to finish: 1 hour, 45 minutes (plus 1 hour, 30 minutes for soaking) 1 (7- to 10-pound) spiral-sliced bone-in half ham 1 large plastic oven bag 1 recipe glaze (recipes follow) Leaving ham’s inner plastic or foil covering intact, place ham in large container and cover with hot water; set aside for 45 minutes. Drain and cover again with hot water; set aside for another 45 minutes.

Kid ride-ons explode with cars, monster trucks

Silver’s picks
NEW YORK (AP) — Mercedes or Mustang? John Deere or Jeep? Electric ride-ons for kids are busting out all over this holiday season. Target will add nearly a quarter-million square feet of new space for toys across more than 500 stores. Some of that real estate will show off a broad selection of ride-ons and other large toys. The high-end FAO Schwarz, meanwhile, is reopening its flagship store in New York for the holidays. In celebration, it’s showing off a ride-on Mercedes-Benz adorned with more than 44,000 Swarovski crystals in glittery red, white and black — for a whopping $25,000. All sorts of ride-ons for kids are available, said Jim Silver, CEO and editor in chief of the review blog TTPM . Generally, they’re made for an age range of 3 to 5 and have parental control options for the highest speed settings. “It’s a growing category,” Silver told The Associated Press. “The offerings, variety and detail are far greater and better than years ago.” Some suggestions for rideables:
Two rideables pack the most wow for Silver. One is the Power Wheels Barbie Dream Camper by Fisher Price in her signature pink. Barbie herself offers voice navigation help at the push of a button. Come to a stop and open up the back for a fold-out kitchen with pretend grill and campfire.
Play food and other accessories are included. There’s room for two kids — with a total weight limit of 130 pounds — and little seats for two Barbies to ride along. “It’s the biggest ride-on we’ve ever seen for a child,” Silver said. His other favorite is the Ride-

Intel and NCSA share tips for safe online holiday shopping
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Heads up holiday shoppers! As you scour the internet for end-of-theyear deals and discounts, it’s important to protect your PC from hackers and fraudsters who are looking for an opportunity to steal your personal information. While online shopping has made our lives easier, it potentially exposes us to new vulnerabilities that can compromise our identities and personal data and provide access to our credit card and bank account information. In order to help shop online safely this season, let’s take a look at some safety tips.
Ensure your device is up to date
A recent survey from the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) indicates that more than half of respondents (51 percent) admit to delaying computer updates. When you receive an update notification from your device manufacturer or operating system vendor, make sure to verify the source and apply the update! It’s one of the easiest ways to help keep devices secure and protect data. In the same NCSA survey, only 25 percent of respondents were “completely confident” that their devices – such as their desktop
computer, laptop or notebook – are free from viruses and malware. Updating reduces risk of infection from these vulnerabilities, giving you peace of mind and enhanced computing experiences. Shop on websites you trust and check security When shopping online, be aware of fake businesses that are looking to steal your credit card information and other personal details. To play it safe, make sure you are purchasing from retailers you absolutely trust and have shopped with before. Still not sure if the website is secure? Check for a small lock icon in the corner of your URL field. This tells you whether that page you’re on has privacy protection installed. Make sure the URL starts with “https” instead of “http,” as the “s” stands for “secure.” This means all communications between your browser and the website are encrypted. If you don’t see that lock or the “s” after “http,” then the webpage isn’t secure. Shop at your own risk!
Use a secure payment method
Be cautious of sites and apps that only accept money orders, wire transfers, or checks. It’s best to shop on websites that accept secure
payment methods (credit cards and PayPal) that have well-known security labels such as DigiCert and VeriSign. With buyer protection, you won’t be held liable for fraudulent charges if there is a data breach. It’s also a good idea to always review your account transactions to look out for any suspicious purchases.
Avoid public Wi-Fi
It may be tempting to shop online at your local café while sipping on a gingerbread latte, but keep in mind, Wi-Fi networks use PUBLIC airwaves. Hackers can easily intercept what you’re looking at on the web and steal valuable information, such as your name, password and credit card information. It’s best not to shop online or log in to any website while you’re connected to public Wi-Fi. Just grab your coffee to-go and wait to shop online when you get home! Lock your device and create strong passwords In order to prevent identity theft, make sure to always lock your device and create strong passwords that can’t be easily guessed. Using a complex set of lowercase and uppercase numbers, letters, and symbols are recommended. Don’t use personal information that others can find, such as birthdates, your
address, or your favorite color. Another good tip is to have separate passwords for every account. For better protection, consider multifactor authentication, which requires more than one method of identity verification (fingerprints, facial recognition). Hardware-based multifactor authentication, which encrypts identify verification within hardware, provides even stronger protection.
Watch out for email scams
Don’t click on emails or links to “deals” that seem too good to be true! Clicking on these links could lead to phishing attacks that can infect your computer with viruses and malware. It’s better to play it safe: delete emails or messages from unknown senders and don’t open any attachments from individuals or businesses you are unfamiliar with. According to the 2017 Cyber Monday Phishing Survey, while 91 percent of consumers noted they were aware of phishing threats, two in five Americans have fallen victim to the scam. To spot a phishing attempt, double check the sender’s email address and hover over links in emails before clicking them. If the URL looks unfamiliar or suspicious, don’t click!

Ham Continued from Page C4
Adjust oven rack to lowest position and heat oven to 250 F. Unwrap ham; discard plastic disk covering bone. Place ham in oven bag. Gather top of bag tightly so bag fits snugly around ham, tie bag, and trim excess plastic. Set ham cut side down in large roasting pan and cut 4 slits in top of bag with knife. Bake ham until center registers 100 degrees, 1 to 1 1/2 hours (about 10 minutes per pound). Remove ham from oven and increase oven temperature to 350 F. Cut open oven bag and roll back sides to expose ham. Brush ham with one-third of glaze and return to oven until glaze becomes sticky, about 10 minutes (if glaze is too thick to brush, return to heat to loosen). Remove ham from oven, transfer to carving board, and brush entire ham with another third of glaze. Tent ham with aluminum foil and let rest for 15 minutes. While ham rests, add 4 to 6 tablespoons of ham juices to remaining one-third of glaze and cook over medium heat until thick but fluid sauce forms. Carve and serve ham, passing sauce separately.

Make local thrift shopping a memorable adventure
By Alison Penn Roswell Daily Record
The holidays are right around the corner and the pressure for gift shopping is rising. How can unique, sentimental gifts be chosen on a budget, while supporting the local economy of Roswell? The answer is turning to local thrift shops. Thrift shopping can be a quirky, wild journey, but there are many ways to have a successful haul. Here are some practical tips for navigating the thrift shops of Roswell. Do not trust Google for hours belonging to the local places. Usually Google is the place to turn, but the local information is not always up to date or correct. Plan to visit midweek, since most shops are closed Friday through Monday. Each store will have varied hours and policies. Think about the recipient and what they love and appreciate. Go to a store with an open mind, and decide on potential gifts based on form, function and fun. The Salvation Army has a wide array of gift boxes, nostalgia-inducing cookie tins, festive crockery and
unique glassware that can all be used as containers for homemade baked goods, fruit and candy, or even hot chocolate mixes. For the small, local shops, bring cash just in case. With the exception of Goodwill and The Salvation Army, most places are cash only and do not accept personal checks. Some places have a welcome board with flat rates listed or each item will be individually priced. Thrift shopping encourages you to be in the moment because most stores do not have layaway. Since there is a chance items are used, be prepared to clean before wrapping. Clothing can be washed gently or dry cleaned. Toys, decor and kitchenware can be scrubbed and polished. Be open to antique and consignment stores. Also, try a new-to-you store like the Roswell Resale Emporium or Galaxy Entertainment, both located at 314 N. Richardson Ave. for potential options. Though antique and consignment stores may have a reputation for being expensive, rewarding bargains can be found after a patient search. One gem downtown,

An array of gift possibilities in one of Roswell’s thrift shops. Stardust Antiques, can provide one-of-a-kind gifts for all ages. Everything from vintage clothing to collectible items and toys can be found and shared with newer generations. Newer and gently used
items are more likely to be found at consignment stores. Once Again is an idea for the ladies in your life with stocked sections of designer purses at discount prices, sparkly earrings and barely worn
shoes. Thrift shopping is useful for bargains and shopping to directly improve your city, but also can be a memorable adventure. Create a name drawing with family and friends,
gather everyone (or go in shifts) to the shop of your choice, let loose in your scavenger hunt, reminisce, and find that thoughtful, personal gift that goes beyond the thought that counts.
Shopping tips to ensure loved ones’ gifts arrive on time
Metro Creative Services
Thanks to families being more spread out than ever before, today’s holiday shoppers must figure out ways to get holiday gifts to their destination on time. The holiday season tends to be the busiest time of year for many delivery services. The following tips should help shoppers ensure their loved ones’ gifts arrive on time. • Ship directly. Adobe
Analytics reported that online shopping hit a record high of $108.2 billion in the 2017 holiday shopping season, and all indicators suggest online shopping will only increase in the years to come. Holiday shoppers who want to ensure their loved ones will receive their gifts on time can rely on online shopping. When checking out, have gifts shipped directly to loved ones’ homes. Many online retailers will even wrap gifts for a nom-

inal fee. • Research shipping options. In 2018, Christmas falls on a Tuesday. Shoppers who plan to rely on two-day or overnight shipping should keep that in mind. Some delivery services may be open throughout the weekend before Christmas, while others may only be open on Saturday. Last-minute shoppers, whether they’re shopping online or in-person, should confirm their shipping options well in
advance of Christmas. Because Christmas is on a Tuesday this year, getting gifts to their destination on time may require shoppers to purchase and ship them earlier than they otherwise might. • Purchase package insurance. Consumer Reports notes that UPS and FedEx shipments automatically come with declared-value coverage of up to $100. (Note: Declared value is the carrier’s maximum liabili-
ty.) Purchasing additional insurance can ease shoppers’ concerns about lost or stolen packages. Just be sure to keep all invoices and receipts in case claims must be filed. Shoppers also should ask for tracking numbers on all packages so they can confirm when packages are delivered. • Properly secure the package. Many delivery services now have off-site drop-off boxes that can make it easy to send gifts.
This is a convenient service, but shoppers who use them won’t be able to have a company employee provide in-person confirmation that their packages are secured to company standards. Poorly packaged items may never be shipped. Visit the shipping company’s website for packaging guidelines, and include a business card and duplicate label inside the package just in case it is damaged after being dropped off.

Greener ways to shop during Black Friday Metro Creative Services Thousands of shoppers eagerly await the arrival of Black Friday to grab big-ticket items and holiday season must-haves at bargain-basement prices. Shoppers who are braving the chilly temperatures of the early morning hours may have sales on their minds, but they can ensure Black Friday shopping suits their environmental ideals as well.
Team up
Come Black Friday, shoppers can travel to stores together to reduce the amount of vehicles on the road. Carpooling or ridesharing to stores can prevent excessive vehicle emissions. Carpooling also has the added benefit of allowing drivers to utilize carpool lanes on major highways. This keeps cars moving at steady speeds, improving fuel efficiency and reducing the likelihood that fuel will be wasted while sitting in stopand-go traffic.
Bring reusable tote bags
Black Friday shoppers shouldn’t forget to pack tote bags among their shopping supplies. Reusable bags help cut down on the waste produced from plastic or paper shopping bags. Tote bags tend to be durable as well, which may make it easier for shoppers to carry around all of the items they purchase on Black Friday.
When making purchases, choose items that feature the least amount of packaging. Items with minimal packaging will result in a lot less waste making its way into landfills.
Bring along a coffee thermos
Waking up early in the morning can leave even the most seasoned early-risers feeling a bit bleary-eyed. Many such shoppers rely on a jolt of fresh-brewed caffeine to get moving. Shoppers can skip disposable coffee cups that fill up landfills and bring along their own reusable insulated mugs or thermoses. Some coffee vendors may even provide refills at discounted costs.
By LEANNE ITALIE Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Big problem or a fraction of the world’s plastic consumption? You decide, but know that single-use plastic straws are a recent target of environmental activists. As restaurants debate whether to voluntarily dole them out and lawmakers feverishly write b an s a gain st th em to protect the ocean and sea life and to reduce stress on landfills, alternatives to plastic straws are plentiful. Some are downright gifty. If you want to feel better about yourself and your holiday gift choices, and to urge someone on your list to give up plastic because they seem not ready for the #NoStrawChallenge, look for these options:
Yes, Tiffany & Co.
Many retailers now give shoppers the option to have their receipts emailed to them. At checkout, consumers can click the button for an e-receipt, saving ink and paper. This option also may make it easier to organize and catalog receipts at home for budgeting or facilitating returns after Christmas has passed. Black Friday is a day to score great deals, and shoppers do not need to compromise their eco-friendly values in their pursuit of the perfect presents.

Let your loved one sip in style with a selec tion of reusable, luxury straws from Tiffany, because who doesn’t love to see a blue box with their name on it come gift time? One, in sterling silver cov-
ered i n rose gold vermeil, comes as a crazy straw with a twist at the bend at the top. The straw comes with a tiny
band of the Tiffany blue in enamel, just to make sure people know its origins. $375. Another lets the sterling silver shine with a little monkey crawling up a vine. $425.
Paper can be cool
The disposable paper varieties of straws are enjoying a rebirth. Some are more festive than others. Amazon has an ample assortment in party-worthy metallics, colorful dots and chevrons, and special-occasion themes like blackand-white patterns or baby blue dots. Lots of brick-and-mortar stores are into paper straws, too. Prices vary.
Bamboo & glass
In addition to metals, from Tiffany level to more affordable in stainless steel, some materials not routinely associated with straws have become more widespread amid the plastic-straw debate. Bamboo is having a moment all over the place, in utensils, plates — even toothbrushes. If you think bamboo straws
with Bamboo, sells a cute bundle of 12 tied with string, for $20. They are grown organically and artisan-made in northeast India, where bamboo straws are traditionally used to drink beer. As for glass, well, some companies insist their offerings are shatter free. A box of four , with a little cleaning brush, goes for $7.99 on Amazon. Two are bent. Ecostraw.com sells a nice variety for all types of drinks.
Pasta & wheat
They may not be the longest lasting but many are no-GMO, fully biodegradable and come in wide sizes worthy of bubble tea. One version is called Hay! Straws and comes tall at 7.75 inches, in a cute box of 100, for $8. Shorter ones are also available. They’re made from wheat stems and are sold with a warning to sip through them, not ingest them. Well, Pasta Straws says on its website that paper straws biodegrade in 30 to 60 days. Pasta Straws do it overnight and are edible, the company said. A sample pack wrapped in paper with a company sticker includes 24 and goes for $7.99. The problem: Generally, pasta straws don’t last as long as, say, glass or metal. Use the slow lane when choosing holiday gifts this year

able to remove it on their own. Buying the right weight is key otherwise. It comes in four weights, from 10 pounds to 25 pounds. Search around because many other weighted blankets are available. This one, intended for use year-round by one person at a time, costs $169.99 for the 10-, 15- and 20-pound versions, and $199.99 for the 25-pound blanket.
NEW YORK (AP) — The world is fast and furious. Why not slow it down for the holidays? Ways to achieve that lofty goal are plentiful. Some ideas on how to give the gift of slow living:
The slow home podcast
The podcast is hosted by the Australian Brook McAlary, a mother of two. She’s a 30-something writer from the Blue Mountains near Sydney who suffered severe postnatal depression in 2011. That’s when she decided to embrace minimalism and simplicity in her life. In addition to the podcast, she has written two books: “SLOW: Simple Living for a Frantic World” and “Destination Simple: Everyday Rituals for a Slower Life.”
Buddha boards & sand gardens
The art of slow growing
For loved ones with a green thumb, and those who aspire, set them up with seeds and everything else they need to get their hands in soil and plant. The shop SmartSeedsEmporium on Etsy offers a way to grow a living sculpture, the Queen Victoria agave plant. With a spiral of deep green leaves, it grows slowly and can reach a foot tall and wide. Mature plants, considered hardy and drought tolerant, can cost up to $1,000. For $4.99, gift 20 seeds. Queen Victorias can live for several decades and spike reddish-purple blooms. This Etsy seller offers a variety of rare, exotic seeds from the around the world as well, but the queen seeds hail

Walking sticks
For people who aspire to walk more, appreciate the woods, get out to the local park trails or get just an hour outside to get the blood flowing, do it in style with a walking stick or cane. In addition to specialty makers and hiking stores, bigger chains are in on the idea. Bed, Bath & Beyond
carries a 48-inch twisted oak walking stick in red for $55.99. It has others along the same lines in different wood and color schemes. A site called Fashionablecanes.com is full of options, including a hazel walking stick handcrafted in Ireland. $53.99. Antique canes and sticks are all over eBay if your gift recipient likes retro.
Wrap up my calm blanket
Do you know somebody who feels they’re failing at sleep? The folks at MyCalmBlanket have borrowed a tool used to soothe anxiety and other sleep disrupters — a weighted blanket. The cotton inner blanket uses glass beads to provide mild pressure based on body weight. The blanket, which mea-
sures 48 inches by 72 inches, should weigh 7 to 12 percent of the sleeper. For a person who weighs 80 to 100 pounds, for example, a 10-pound blanket would do. An outer duvet, in a gray square quilted design, is made of minky, a soft polyester velour. The creators caution that the blanket should not be used by anyone who likely would not be
A token gift or actually pretty Zen? Your gift recipient may get a tickle out of one of these either way. Buddha Boards come in a range of styles and sizes now. They provide a surface for creating fleeting designs with water, a bamboo brush, a bowl and a stand to catch drips included. Mini Zen sand gardens are a world onto themselves, with little tools, bridges, rocks, trees and Buddha statues available. One company, Zen Life, offers a set of eight sand stamps in floral, spiral and polygon shapes. $17.95 on Amazon.
Defy the instant pot
The multi-use pressure cooker has been all the rage. Slow it on down with a simple, single-function slow cooker. Consider a stoneware insert, make sure the lid is tight fitting and look for easy, intuitive controls. Also, it would be nice if the handles stayed cool. The idea is to make it easy but more importantly slow, providing the best aromatherapy of all: Eight hours of pot roast wafting through the house.

Give the gift of a narwhal: the unicorns of the sea
By Leanne Italie Associated Press

Gund is in on the narwhal craze with a plump plush stuffed animal that measures 13 inches. $25. A company called Douglas does a rainbow narwhal with a silver tusk in different sizes. The medium sells for $17.95.
NEW YORK (AP) — Technically speaking, narwhals are Monodon monoceros, or medium-size whales with long spiral tusks protruding from their heads. To fans, the crazy looking arctic creatures are more like unicorns of the sea. Narwhals may be wacky, but they’re nipping at the heels of llamas and other “it” animals just in time for the holidays. There’s an abundance of gifty narwhal items floating about, from apparel and plush toys to jewelry and home goods. There’s even narwhal wrapping paper, some with green wreaths dangling from the horn. Somebody’s interest ed, including conservationists looking to protect the endangered narwhal. According to Etsy, searches for “narwhals” have increased 16 percent so far this year over the same period last year. That’s more than 133,000 searches. Not life-changing, for sure, but fun enough. Some narwhal gift ideas:
Home goods
Wall art, decorative pillows, duvet covers: There’s a narwhal out there to please everybody. Head to Wayfair.com for a nice selection. A truly beachy statement in a welcoming graphic art print comes on wood with two narwhals crossing horns and this message: “Not unlike the majestic narwhal, together we are just the right amount of wonderful & weird.” $80. Mugs, mugs and more mugs: Uncommongoods. com has one in blue ceramic and his name is Ned . $42. Over at Etsy, MoonlightMakers says it all with a blue narwhal playing the banjo on a mug that reads: “Stay Weird.” $15.
To wear
An Etsy seller with a shop called Fresh Dressed Tees offers a grumpy narwhal holding a sign that chides: “Not a Unicorn.” $20. On Amazon, a company called Foot Traffic touts seafoam green narwhal socks with a wavy splash of blue at the ankle. $9. Sky Tee Designs on Etsy offers a black hoodie that reads: “Always be yourself except if you can be a narwhal then always be a narwhal.” $35.66. Search for narwhal hats in a range of styles. There’s a website, narwhalclothingcompany.com , with a limited selection

It donates 5 percent of its profits to Save the Whales.
Paper goods
There exists a 16-month “Narwhal Nation” calendar that ends in December 2019. Each month offers inspiring words from the social media darling, such as “Find yourself and be
that” and “I’m not weird. I’m limited edition.” On Amazon, from Rock Point. $10.39. Got a coloring person? Bazaar Encounters sells a coloring book with more than 30 narwhals. Worthy of kids and adults. It includes four pages of fun facts about narwhals. On Amazon for $7.99. Tons of other narwhal coloring books are there as well, along with actual books
for reading about them. You were thinking about a journal anyway as a go-to stocking stuffer? Make it a narwhal cover. It’s a wide-ruled composition notebook adorned with frolicking narwhals and cute little rainbows. Comes with 55 sheets of paper. $4.99 on Amazon. Look around because there are others if this one doesn’t suit you.
Go plush
So much cuteness. Claire’s, Walmart, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Neiman Marcus: You don’t need to break a sweat to find a narwhal in fun colors and styles. Among handcrafted items, an Etsy seller called SweetPeaStitches84 will customize and monogram one of the creatures with a little gold horn, starting at
Narwhal bonus round
For true believers, narwhals are living large in pendants, earrings and pins. Just search around. Etsy seller LichenAndLychee does a handmade necklace in recycled sterling silver of just the tusk, done in carved domesticated water buffalo bone. $95. Another seller there, DawningCollective, does a narwhal necklace in bronze that comes with a little tassel and a 30-inch chain. $55. Target even has on offer a narwhal Christmas tree ornament.
As design element, coffee table books are great gifts By Leanne Italie Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) — Whether as a design element or an ode to a passion or hobby, coffee table books have it covered, especially as holiday gifts. Splashy, special interest books are in abundance this time of year and may seem extravagant when self-purchased. That’s exactly why wrapping them up and handing them over to a loved one can strike just the right tone. Some suggestions:
Music
“Women Who Rock: Bessie to Beyonce. Girl Groups to Riot Grrrl.” Edited by Evelyn McDonnell. Black Dog & Leventhal. Yes, the dust jacket is bright pink, for better or worse, but the essays are all-encompassing, as the title suggests. Includes a range of writers, though accompanying portraiture may not be to taste. Each profile is written by a woman, with more than 100 in all. The subjects were chosen, as McDonnell says, both painstakingly and arbitrarily as she went about honoring “rock” as a verb, not a noun. $35. “Contact High: A Visual History of Hip-Hop,” by Vikki Tobak. Clarkson Potter. Hip-hop photographers share their contact sheets, paired with interviews and essays. Spans nearly 40 years. Also plen-

ty of performance and audience imagery. There’s Fab 5 Freddy at a White Castle in the Bronx, 1982. Jump to 1993 for a never-before-seen photo of Tupac and Nas at a Club Amazon party in Manhattan. Time trip again to 2012 Atlanta and Gucci Mane on the set of the “Shooters” video. $40. “Hindsight & All the Things I Can’t See in Front of Me,” by Justin Timberlake. Harper Design. It’s his first book, in which he writes: “You have to dare to suck.” As a 2-year-old in Memphis, family lore goes, he harmonized nicely with Don Henley on the car radio. He revels in his years on “Saturday Night Live,” and his bromance with Jimmy Fallon. Of early ‘N Sync: “We had a lot of fun, and we really cared about what we were doing. We wanted to be good at it.” $40.
Home
“City of Angels: House and Gardens of Los Angeles,” by Jennifer Ash Rudick and Firooz Zahedi. The Vendom Press. Drool worthy, eclectic, renowned. These are interiors and outdoor spaces of film producers, directors, artists, photographers and musicians. Over 25 houses, bungalows, studios and compounds. The spaces include homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and Rudolph Schindler, from Malibu and the Santa Monica Mountains to a Pacific Pal-
isades villa decorated by Oliver Furth. $75. “From the Earth: World’s Great, Rare and Almost Forgotten Vegetables,” by Peter Gilmore. Hardie Grant Books. With hundreds of varieties to choose from, Australian chef Gilmore has selected 50 heirloom vegetables and plants. In the process, he delves into the history of both common varieties and rare or nearly extinct ones. Interviews with farmers. Recipes on how to cook up his discoveries. $60. “Tony Duquette’s Dawndridge,” by Hutton Wilkinson. Abrams. Wilkinson bought designer Duquette’s Beverly Hills home after Duquette’s death in 1999, chronicling its expansion from a tiny box house into an expansive estate still filled with items picked by and created by Duquette and his wife, Elizabeth. It’s quirky and chic and comfy all at the same time. Have a look at the Monkey Room, a glassed-in porch overlooking the garden. Duquette used it as storage and Wilkinson brought it to life. There’s the signature Duquette leopard-print carpet on the staircase leading down to the summer and guest bedrooms. $75.

Her name was Vivian Maier and this book brings her meandering to life in color. One self-portrait says it all with a sliver of her face reflected in a hand mirror that rests on a bunch of yellow flowers on street brick, from 1975. $80. “Literary Chickens,” by Beth Moon. Abbeville Press. You heard that right. The New York photographer Moon has paired 52 gorgeous blackand-white portraits of heritage-breed chickens with literary excerpts. The beady-eyed gazes of every last one of the birds are fixed on Moon’s lens. Consider the Silver Phoenix female paired with this from Virginia Woolf’s “Night and Day”: “I’ve done my best to see you as you are, without any of this damned romantic nonsense.” $35. “Trees: Between Earth and Heaven,” photographs by Art Wolfe, text by Gregory McNamee. Earth Aware Editions. Wolfe is a landscape photographer who has worked on every continent. Here, he puts us up close with a leopard lounging in a thorn tree in Botswana. He shares the colorful giant sequoias of California. Light dances through his images, as does the icy Moreno Glacier that serves as backdrop to the tops of South-

Fashion
“Roland Mouret: Provoke - Attract - Seduce,” by Roland Mouret and Alexander Fury. Rizzoli. The French designer in conversation with fashion writer and historian Fury. This ode to Mouret and his company is more valuable for its Q-and-A text than the photos of various models and collections. It’s all very French: “You know, I’ve learnt everything about fashion in bed,” Mouret says. “Every body I’ve touched has taught me something about dressing it.” “Rolex: The Impossible Collection,” by Fabienne Reybaud. Assouline. If you can afford a Rolex, you can afford to gift this stunning, limited-edition oversize book about the brand, its history and its celebrity following. By big, we mean 14-by-17 inches, in a handcrafted clamshell case with color plates hand-tipped on art quality paper. The luxury time pieces are shown off on the wrists of everybody from Picasso to Pope John Paul II. $845.
Culture

Food
“Food & Drink Infographics: A Visual Guide to Culinary Pleasures,” by Simone Klabin, edited by Julius Wiedermann. Taschen. Butchery in France, the principles of molecular gastronomy, the health benefits of sweet cherries and everything you need to know about chewing gum, all represented in fun visuals that often double as art in and of themselves. Some are historical, others comical. Many may also be useful in the kitchen or at the bar. $70. “Pantone Foodmood,” edited by Guido Tommasi. Guido Tommasi Publishing/ACC Distribution. Drawing inspiration from the color experts at Pantone, these dishes urge home cooks to create with their eyes. Recipes are organized by color and each color is characterized by mood. ‘Worst toys’ for holidays, according to safety group By Philip Marcelo Associated Press

Above, a battery-lighted unicorn plush toy of the Nickelodeon character Nella that is part of a product line called “Pillow Pets Sleeptime Lite,” which is on the World Against Toys Causing Harm, or W.A.T.C.H., list of worst toys for the holiday season, rests on a table before a news conference, Nov. 13 at a hospital, in Boston. The Massachusetts-based consumer safety group says the toy has small felt-like accessories attached to it that if removed pose potential ingestion hazards. Left, a “cutting fruit” toy set, which is also on the W.A.T.C.H. list of worst toys for the holiday season. BOSTON (AP) — A Black Panther “slash claw” and a plastic Power Rangers sword are among the items topping a consumer safety group’s annual list of worst toys for the holiday season. Massachusetts-based World Against Toys Causing Harm, or W.A.T.C.H., unveiled its 46th annual list of the 10 “worst toys” Tuesday at Franciscan Children’s Hospital in Boston. Joan Siff, the nonprofit organization’s president, said many of the toys on the list represent choking, eye and other safety hazards that surface year after year, despite the group’s efforts. Siff advised parents to shop “defensively” and not be lulled into a false sense of security because a toy is made by a familiar brand or sold at an established retailer. One child is treated in a U.S. emergency room every three minutes for a toy-related injury, according to the Center for Injury and Research at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. A Cabbage Patch Kids ballerina doll that made this year’s list, for example, is marketed to children ages two and above, but includes a removable tutu and headband that can be choking hazards, said James Swartz, a trial lawyer who serves as W.A.T.C.H.’s director. A slender mallet that comes with VTech’s caterpillar-shaped electronic xylophone — a toy made for children as young as 18
months old — is another similar choking threat, he said. Other toys on the list included a Nerf gun that fires soft discs, a “stomp rocket” that launches foamtipped projectiles up to 200 feet in the air and a plastic “cutting fruit” set. The cutting set, which includes a toy knife made out of rigid plastic, is made for children who are older than 2. But the Toy Association, an industry trade group that represents most of the toy companies named this year, complained the list is biased, inaccurate and “needlessly frightening” to parents. The association said many of the hazards highlighted by W.A.T.C.H. are clearly spelled out in the products’ packaging and instructions. It also said only two products listed on the nonprofit’s “worst toy” lists from the five years prior were recalled, and those two had already been pulled before W.A.T.C.H. released its list. Swartz responded by pointing to a list of dozens of toys that have been recalled or pulled from retailers’ shelves from the early 2000s all the way back to the 1970s, in part by the group’s efforts. And he said providing detailed warning labels “doesn’t absolve” toy makers from needing to simply design safer items. “They’re trying to shift the responsibility to parents and consumers,” Swartz said. “They’re really shirking their responsibility.” Swartz highlighted Hasbro’s retractable plastic

Wrapping up the holidays in an eco-friendly way By Kim Cook Associated Press For many of us, wrapping gifts is even more fun than giving them. But each year, we throw away miles and miles of wrapping paper, much of which can’t be recycled because of inks, coatings or other additives. If you want to make a gift to the environment at the same time you’re giving to others, choose any of a variety of smart, stylish and eco-friendly ways to gift-wrap this year. To really get on the eco express, wrap gifts in vintage road maps, pages from old books, newspaper comics, foreign language newspapers, kids’ drawings, brown paper bags. Clean and reuse tins, bottles or packaging from favorite stores. Or borrow the Japanese tradition of furoshiki, wrapping gifts in fabric by using scarves, thin blankets, tea towels or other eye-catching pieces of material. But there’s also a growing number of eco-friendly papers out there. Sara Smith of Maui, Hawaii, founded the company Wrappily in an effort to “green-up giving.” “After learning that gift wrap generates over 4 million tons of trash every year, I had a ‘what-if’ realization: What if wrapping paper could be printed on a newspaper press, so it was made locally and easy to recycle?” she says. She set up her supply chain, milling, printing and packaging in Washington State. “I’m certain no one has over-thought wrapping paper to the extent I have,” she laughs.

This undated photo provided by Wrappily shows some of the company’s holiday wrap designs. Wrappily’s papers are printed on underutilized newspaper presses in Washington State. Founder Sara Smith says “At its core, gifting is based on thoughtfulness, but for many ending a gift exchange by sending a pile of trash to landfill dampens the joy. Wrappily offers a solution that’s thoughtfully made, environmentally responsible and 100% recyclable/compostable.” She promotes indie artists and prints the designs on uncoated, 100-percent recyclable and compostable
newsprint. Wrappily offers customized papers as well as ready-to-ship, printed ones. For example, there
are birch tree, reindeer and argyle-knit motifs by artist Nadia Hassan of Greensboro, North Carolina, and
festive, midcentury-modern geometrics from Manhattan studio Hour of Nine. There’s a modern take on
Scandinavian folk art from Dutch designer Tamara Houtveen in a zingy palette of pinks, reds, blues and citron. At The Container Store, designs this season include a tailored antler print in warm navy and tan hues; a retro Rudolph pattern; and a cozy snowflake pattern on a gray, cable-knit printed background — all printed either on recycled paper or recycled cotton. Paper Source partners with mills and printers that follow sustainability practices. The company also recycles, donates or reuses all its scrap paper. At Grandin Road , there’s a black-and-tan or redand-gold geometric print on paper that’s made from the bark of the Lokta bush in Nepal. Sales help support a women’s co-op in a region of that country that was ravaged by a 2015 earthquake. Bloomin, a Colorado company, offers seed paper: richly colored sheets made from recycled paper pulp embedded with flower, vegetable, herb, grass and tree seeds. You can use it for gift tags and cards, and then the paper can be soaked in water and planted by the gift recipient. Los Angeles design studio Art Paper Scissors offers packets of little drawstring Hanukkah countdown goodie bags made of unbleached muslin, printed with heat-transferred blue numbers. InterfaithLiving in Silver Spring, Maryland, offers designs on Etsy.com that combine Christmas and Hanukkah images and messages, printed on recycled, recyclable Kraft paper.

Tips for hosts and houseguests to keep holidays happy By Katherine Roth Associated Press The holiday season often means houseguests. What does it mean to be a good host — or a good houseguest? “Remember the spirit of the holidays. It’s easy to get caught up in wanting everything to be perfect. The point is to have fun, and whether you’re a guest or a host, flexibility and thoughtfulness go a long way,” says Leslie Yazel, editor in chief at Real Simple magazine. Here are some tips from the pros to keep things running smoothly and minimize stress.
For hosts
• Talk with guests before they arrive about any allergies, dietary restrictions or preferences, and get a sense of what they do and don’t want to do during their stay. “Some people want to go to museums and shopping, and for others, just hanging out at home and relaxing is what they prefer,” Yazel says. “Checking in with guests before they arrive helps ensure that everyone’s on the same page.” • Try to discuss morning schedules the night before, and set out a basket with some fruit, muffins or other snacks in case your guests get late-night munchies or turn out to be early risers. The day they arrive, “it’s nice to give guests a set of spare keys, show them where the mugs and coffee are, and discuss morning schedules,” says Tanya Graff, style director at Martha Stewart Living magazine. • Little touches make a big impact, Graff says. If guests are staying for the weekend, you can make their room more comfortable and welcoming with thoughtful details like fresh flowers, magazines, a water carafe, a suitcase rack, a waste bin, a bathrobe and quality sheets. “Try sleeping where your guests will be staying for one night to ensure the space is comfortable and you haven’t overlooked something obvious ... like bedside lighting for reading in bed or a shade to block the sun streaming through
the windows in the morning,” Yazel says. “Play act through it. Is there a clock with a night light? A place to hang a wet towel? And leave a little card with your WiFi password. That’s always appreciated.” Add a little color. Floral designer Ariella Chezar, author of the forthcoming book “Seasonal Flower Arranging” (Ten Speed Press), suggests picking up a few blossoms or branches at a farmer’s market, on a walk or even in a grocery store to lift the mood and look of a holiday home. • Have a schedule in mind, but be flexible. “For something like Thanksgiving, you definitely don’t want to wing it. Have a timetable mapped out to make things easier on yourself. Enlist help from your guests if you want. Otherwise have the table set and ready, with extra chairs in place, before they arrive,” recommends Graff. And if you’re making a big meal one evening, make sure you have something easy for the next morning that doesn’t require a lot of cleanup, like croissants you can pull out of the freezer, or simple egg sandwiches for the crowd, she says.
For guests
• Communicate with your host ahead of time about any allergies, dishes you’d like to contribute or things you’d like to do while there. • Offer to help. Be ready to set the table, clear the table, do dishes, serve drinks, be a sous-chef — whatever you can do to pitch in, says Graff. “And before you leave, strip the beds and gather up the towels, to make clean up easier for your host.” • Bring a gift, or breakfast. “It’s nice to bring something for breakfast as a gift if you’re spending the night,” Graff says. “Something thoughtful and practical, nothing that requires them to do anything — that’s much better than arriving with flowers that they’ll have to arrange in a vase on the spot.” “If you’re coming from another part of the country, it’s great to bring a regional specialty from

No one wants a lump of coal, but a box of rocks is a perfect gift for crafty friends and family members, if you also include a book about rock painting and other supplies.
For crafty gifts, pair how-to books with supplies for creative loved ones
By Holly Ramer Associated Press CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Santa has his crew of crafty elves, but those of us living south of the North Pole could use a little help. Sure, your creative friends and loved ones will appreciate a how-to book full of new projects for an existing hobby, or ideas that could spark a new one. But consider going the extra mile by putting together a DIY kit with supplies that allow them to dive right in. Want to really make it special? Make one of the projects yourself and tuck it in
with the book and supplies as inspiration. I’ve been lucky enough to be on the receiving end of this idea. Admittedly, I was perplexed when I tore away the wrapping paper and found a stack of used books with no discernable theme — a novel, a biography, a collection of famous quotations and a picture book. My confusion disappeared when I opened the second parcel my friend presented to me: a book about making crafts with recycled books. “Book Art: Creative Ideas to Transform Your Books into Decorations, Stationery, Display Scenes and More” by Clare
Youngs (CICO Books, 2018) includes nearly three dozen projects ranging from simple cards to elaborate three-dimensional sculptures. Rather than have your recipient rooting around in her home library, hit up some yard sales or thrift stores and pick out a few hefty hardcovers. Ideally, offer a mix of newer volumes and well-worn tomes, some with dense text and some with colorful illustrations. Consider including a craft knife, an awl for punching holes and a glue stick. A small, self-healing cutting mat also would come in handy, as would some tracing paper for trans-
ferring designs to book pages. If you’re lucky, you might get a handmade thank-you card featuring one of the projects! If you have any knitters on your list, “Pom Pom Animals” by Trikotri (NIPPAN IPS Co., 2018) provides plenty of projects to use up leftover yarn. The book includes 45 adorable and surprisingly realistic-looking animals, and while I’m not sure anyone but the hippest of hipsters would actually wear a squirrel head brooch, the animals would be cute atop hair ties for children or pinned to tote bags. home,” Yazel says, like your favorite salsa from Texas. Or something like ready-tobake breakfast pastries or home-baked cookies might be a welcome gift. • Prepare to entertain yourself. Bring books, games or other things to keep you or your children busy so that your host isn’t burdened with nonstop entertaining, Yazel suggests. • Compromise. That includes food and movie choices, and kids’ bedtimes. A helpful, cheerful disposition and plenty of flexibility are always welcome, Yazel says.

claws for Marvel’s Black Panther, an item featured on this year’s list. The toy gloves come with a warning they should not be used to hit or swing at people. “When you call it a slash claw,” he said, “there’s likely one thing a child is going to do with that claw.”
together a basket of supplies including plastic pom pom makers in various sizes, wool yarn in various shades of brown, white, gray and black, a package of plastic safety eyes and a small assortment of wool roving. While these projects may be a bit too intricate for children, the idea can easily be adapted by choosing a book aimed at a younger audience and pairing it with brightly colored acrylic yarn. The Klutz brand of activity-based books includes several pom pom titles that include supplies with the instructions. Embroidery has made a comeback in the fashion world in recent years, spawning multiple how-to books. “Hoop Dreams” by Cristin Morgan (Abrams, 2018) features modern designs and instructions for projects ranging from simple decorative hoops to

jewelry. Embroidery floss comes in a near endless array of colors, so pick out a handful and package them up with some hoops, needles, scissors and marking pens. The small monogrammed hoop featured in the first chapter would make a good Christmas ornament, too. And while no one wants a lump of coal in his or her stocking, a box of rocks is a different story. Rock painting, from the mesmerizing patterns of mandala stones to cute critters, is getting trendy, and a DIY kit is easy and fairly inexpensive to put together. Buy an assortment of acrylic craft paint and brushes, paint pens and varnish, and collect rocks from around your yard, a beach or a riverbank. “Art on the Rocks” by F. Sehnaz Bac, Marisa Redondo and Margaret Vance (Quarto Publishing Group, 2017) features about three dozen projects for rocks of all shapes and sizes.

Nonprofit offers charity gift cards

SEATTLE (AP) — Giving Tuesday is predicted to raise $330 million for charities around the world. The global day of giving encourages consumers to focus on helping others through the gifts of time, financial contributions or goods. With Giving Tuesday and the holiday gift season upon us, TisBest, a Seattle-based nonprofit, offers shoppers a fun twist on philanthropy – literally giving the gift of giving. Founded in 2007, TisBest created an unusual gift card. It works like a conventional gift card with one meaningful exception: the recipient “spends” the card by choosing which charity to support with the funds. Recipients get to select from one of 1.5 million registered charities – all featured on the TisBest website. “We like to think of TisBest as a philanthropy multiplier. The gift giver allows the gift recipient a chance to change the world in a way that’s personalized and important to them, thus furthering a social habit of philanthropy,” said Erik Marks, founder of TisBest. “We strive to empower people of all ages to support causes they are passionate about, especially younger generations.” And younger generations are giving more than ever. Research shows that 84 percent of millennials give to charities annually and 64 percent of them won’t work for an employer that doesn’t demonstrate strong corporate responsibility. By providing this growing workforce with a meaningful, sustainable way of gift giving, TisBest has raised more than $16 million for charities across the country since 2007. Charity gift cards are customizable and come in any amount between $10 and $5,000. Gift givers can choose to send a 100 percent recycled plastic card by mail, print a card at home or send an e-card directly to the gift recipient. Each card is tax deductible and 100 percent of the purchase goes to authorized, vetted charities.
