For some teams, Hike it and Spike it takes place close to home, others have to travel a couple hours or a day, and then there is Greg Brennecka and his wife Celeste, who live in Germany. In a phone interview they told their story and why they travel around the world for the annual sports event. The couple had participated in 2014’s Hike it and Spike it for the first time. “I had a friend who had played in it six or seven years,” said Brennecka. “I lived in Phoenix with him, his name is Ken Rios. (Brennecka and Rios
played football together at Arizona State). He said, ‘You got to come and do this. It is a lot of fun.’ He asked me to join his team, and my wife and I both played on a co-ed team and we got a group together to play. That is how I found out about it and the interest got started,” said Brennecka. Brennecka has good memories of his first visit to Roswell, though he only had time to visit some of the local restaurants before leaving town. Brennecka is a scientist researching meteorites and has heard about the area before. “The people in Roswell are certainly plugged in into space research. There is
a lot of good telescopes in the area. It is definitely a great area for space research.” Just after his visit in Roswell, Brennecka and his wife moved to Germany. He had applied for a grant to continue his research at the esteemed Humboldt foundation in Germany. “I received one of those grants for five years to set up my own group,” he said. “It is a really good opportunity.” Moving to Germany does not interfere with the Brennecka’s plans to play with his team, “Methad One Football Clinic”, at this year’s Hike it and Spike it. “It is kind of a See FAMILY, Page 15

Miss Roswell 2016 Ashlea Watley, a multiple-time Hike It and Spike It competitor, enjoys dressing up on stage as well as getting down and dirty in the grass. Look for Miss Roswell and her team, Super Saucy Squad, playing in the Co-Ed 19+ division on Field AA.

For those Hike It and Spike It competitors in the co-ed 19-plus division, better watch out, because you might get burned on a short slant by a beauty pageant winner. Ashlea Watley, a 20-yearold former Roswell High student was recently crowned Miss Roswell 2016, but don’t think she’s all smiles and waves. Watley has been playing at the annual 4-on-4 flag football tourney since junior high and her team has finished as high as third in her division. “My dad coached us the first year because none of us had played any football,” she said. “We dropped to the
Down and Out Bowl that year, but since then we’ve practiced and had decent results.” In the past, Watley played with her Charlie’s Angels dance teammates and took pride in turning heads as they beat teams consisting of more traditional athletes. “Some people were skeptical,” she said. “They’d say, ‘OK, the dance team is playing?’ but we’re all pretty athletic so the skepticism went away pretty fast once we got going.” But this year, Watley has a whole new team and will play in the co-ed division for the first time. “This year I invited my Albuquerque friends to come down and play,” she said.
“And one friend is coming from Colorado and hasn’t practiced with us, so hopefully we get in a full team practice before the games start.” Watley said the male members of her team will take care of most of the offense, but she does plan on running some shorter routes. “I’ll let the guys go out for the long throws,” she said. “Defense is probably where I’ll play the most, but on offense it will mainly be the guys running the show. Our team name is the Super Saucy Squad.” On top of having a new team this year, Watley will also be keeping up appearances as Miss Roswell throughout See WATLEY, Page 18

Job Corps volunteers Hike It and Spike It, United Way try to keep games fair make a winning team together and their players safe
By Lisa Dunlap Roswell Daily Record
Participants and visitors at the Hike It and Spike It games might feel a bit safer, while players can thank or curse some of the calls on the field with a nod to students from Roswell Job Corps. For the past seven to 10 years, the local arm of the federal educational and training program has been providing volunteers for the charity event. This year about 45 to 50 people are expected to donate their time as either referees or security personnel, said Administrative Director Jose Martinez. About 30 students enrolled in the Job Corps’ Protective Services program will volunteer to provide 24-hour security for the three-day event. The program typically runs

Students in that program volunteer to work morning, afternoon or night shifts for three days. Security volunteers ensure that items or tents are secure, provide crowd control and patrol parking areas. Another 15 to 20 Job Corps participants are expected to sign up as referees for the games. They will receive a few hours of training before hitting the fields to call ‘em like they see ‘em. “There is a learning curve, definitely, especially if you don’t know anything about football, “ said Martinez, “but we have quite a few people willing to do it.” Job Corps also provides See JOB CORPS, Page 18

Since 2000, Chaves County United Way has been Hike It and Spike It’s “charity of choice.” The United Way will receive $5,000 from the event, which draws hundreds of weekend professional players from across the nation. This year, one of the teams will include two players from Germany. The 4-on-4 flag football tournament began in 1996, and over nearly 20 years has evolved into Roswell’s biggest weekend event. Play Hard but Play Smart: Tips to Keep You in the Game Warm up Before you Play: Many athletes are injured in the initial minutes of game because they jump right in without warming up. So, take 5-10 minutes to warm up gradually before going in and playing hard! Keep your Body Fed: Try and eat about 2 hours before your game to play at your peak performance. Post-game it is best to recover with some simple carbohydrates (food or sports drinks) to replenish glycogen stores. Stay Well-Hydrated: Just a bit of dehydration will decrease your performance! It's recommended that you drink about a quart of water within two hours of play, and then drink a cup every fifteen minutes during the game. Don’t Continue to Play if you are in Pain: The game shouldn't cause pain, so at the first twinge of acute, or sharp pains, stop playing. Pain is your body's way of saying, "hey, something is wrong." Pushing through acute pain is the fastest way to develop a severe or chronic injury. If you don't feel well, sit out and rest for a while. You can also stop by the ENMMC sponsored medical tent for a free evaluation. Rest and Recover: Athletes need rest, proper nutrition and a good night's sleep to recover for the next big game. Be sure to get a good meal and a good night’s sleep during the tournament; your body will thank you for it! Last but not least, don’t forget the sunscreen!
To get you back Our pledge: in the game. w w w. e n m m c . c o m

They can obtain their high school diploma equivalent degrees or, through academic programs offered by Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell, earn college credits and train for careers. MASH unit ready for thrills and spills
By Jeff Tucker Roswell Daily Record
While they’re not the whacky meatball surgeons seen on TV, the MASH unit at this year’s “Hike It & Spike It” tournament probably has more experience taping ankles. For the 21st straight year since the inception of the annual 4-on-4 charity flag football tournament, the Eastern New Mexico Medical Center MASH medical unit will be on hand at Cielo Grande Recreation Area throughout this weekend’s tournament providing first-aid care. “It’s lots of fun,” said Brooke Linthicum, marketing director for ENMMC, one of the tournament’s annual sponsors. “We really enjoy it. It’s a great way for us to be out there interacting with the community and providing a great service. It’s much-needed. It’s going to be super hot out there, so people need to make sure that they’re wearing their sunscreen and staying hydrated, drinking lots of water.” The MASH unit, short for mobile army surgical hospital, is staffed by a combination of Eastern New Mexico Medical Center nursing staff and emergency medical service personnel from the Roswell Fire Department.

the tournament. “I’ll be running back and forth, doing stuff for Cla (Avery) and when I’m not playing, I’ll be wearing my crown and walking around,” she said. “I love doing appearances and representing Roswell, especially at a big event
About 10 hospital staff and eight firefighters will be on shift throughout the annual tournament Saturday and Sunday. “We usually rotate a couple of shifts,” Linthicum said. “We’ll have people come in from 8 (a.m.) to 1 (p.m.) and then 1 to 8. At 8 o’clock in the morning, we’re wrapping a ton of stuff. By later in the afternoon is when we typically see more of the injuries and heat exhaustion and that sort of thing.” The MASH unit will be centrally located near the top men’s field, while a secondary unit will be at the children’s fields. Staffers use golf carts to reach each field quickly when an injury occurs so that help is a short distance away. Ankle and knee injuries are the most common mishaps, although more severe injuries are common. The MASH unit performs basic first-aid services, evaluates the need of participants to go to the emergency room and suggests players seek follow-up treatment for more severe injuries. Jamie Luna, medical unit coordinator for the MASH unit, estimates he’s personally taped more than 300 people’s ankles over the years at the
Memorial Day weekend tournaments. Injuries requiring surgery have occurred in the past. “It’s crazy how many injuries there are out there, unfortunately,” Linthicum said. “You see some crazy stuff out there. I’ve seen some very obviously broken ankles, legs, arms. We’ll send over at least a dozen or so to the hospital if they need additional evaluation by a physician and the lab kind of stuff.” Preventative care is also available at the MASH units. “That’s part of the wrapping that we do,” Linthicum said. “We wrap ankles, knees. We’ll have sunscreen. We’ll have water, ice. A lot of time the guys will come over and get the Bengay stuff put on some of their muscles just to warm them up a little bit so that they don’t hurt themselves as bad. Anything that we can do to help kind of prevent anything.” Between all the preventative and post-injury care, Linthicum said there’s nothing quite like watching the biggest flag football tournament in the world involving nearly 600 teams. “I go out there for there for the entertainment,” she said.
like this.” Watley said Hike It and Spike It is a huge undertaking that promotes Roswell in a positive light. “Most people outside Roswell think of it as the alien town, but I think we have a lot more to offer visitors,” she said. “I think it’s amazing that Cla and the other volunteers can put something of this magnitude together every
year.” For Watley, HISI is about fun, family, friends and of course, the food. “Just being out there and watching all the teams playing everywhere and walking around, seeing people you haven’t seen in a while, it’s super fun,” she said. “And I especially like the food. I love funnel cake.”

Character Counts! ensures strong sportsmanship By Bethany Freudenthal and Karen Boehler Roswell Daily Record
As with nearly all athletic events, the teams that participate in Hike It and Spike It come in it to win, but from the inception of the annual 4-on-4 flag football tournament, there’s been an added component to the competition: a strong focus on sportsmanship. It’s not that the teams – from the youngest youth athletes to the “Show Me the Money” participants – don’t want to win, it’s that they know there’s an added bonus if they play by the mantra, “pursuing victory with honor.” In 2000, Character Counts! became a sponsor of the Memorial Day weekend event and in 2014 they became the top sponsor for the event. Their objective, across the country at both the high school and college levels is to try to redirect the focus in sports competition to the role that these events play in the development of the athletes. “We think the tournament provides an outstanding platform for character counts! and it’s an opportunity to present to the community throughout the event the example of athletes competing with intensity and fervor and at the same time respecting each other and the event,” said Judge Alvin Jones, who was the first co-chair of Chaves County Character Counts! According to Jones, Hike It and Spike it realized early on that Character Counts! could be a key component of the program. “The intent of the endeavor is help the athletes appreciate it through the intensity of competition with outstanding opponents that
they reach themselves the highest level of ability as athletes and so, but through the quality of the competition. There’s always rules, but fundamentally there’s the issue of good sportsmanship,” Jones said. Each year, every HISI division competes for a Character Counts! award and which team receives the honor is determined by the officials and while that puts an added bit of responsibility on those officials, Jones said they appreciate this recognition of sportsmanship and recognize the role the award plays. “The officials throughout the event keep track of the quality of the play and behavior of the contestants on each of the fields they work at and the determination is made before the end of the tournament as to who the teams will be that are recognized for the recognition,” Jones said. Teams also come in with goals of not only winning their division, but proving they can win by playing fair. It’s fairly common to hear people say, ‘Look, we want to try for the character award. Watch your behavior,’ and if something happens, teammates immediately intervene and settle things down and deal with the upset, whatever it is,” Jones said. Winner’s of the Character Counts! award will receive free entry into next year’s tournament. “This is a substantial recognition of the good character of the athletes, it’s a significant benefit, the entries to the event are not cheap,” Jones said. The six pillars of Character Counts! are, trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.

New Mexico Youth ChalleNGe represents one of the largest volunteer groups for Hike It and Spike It. This year, there are 80 cadets and about 20 staff members who will be volunteering their time and efforts for the 4-on-4 flag football tournament. “We have been involved in Hike It and Spike It for several years, and each year we have a larger class, which means being able to provide more cadets as the event grows every year,” said Sabrina Lara, recruiting and mentoring supervisor for the Youth ChalleNGe Academy. Several of the cadets will be assisting with setting up the event on Thursday and Friday to make sure everything is prepared for Saturday and Sunday. They will also have two male teams and one female team playing in the event, according to Director Tina Sisneros. “On Saturday and Sunday, 20 cadets will be game officials, 25 cadets will be field tent monitors, and the rest of the cadets will be helping with parking, trash cleanup and anything else they need help with,” said Deputy Director Chris Lara. “I will be out there on site, off and on throughout the weekend to help out with supervision of our cadets,” Chris Lara said. “Most of our cadets have never been involved in an event of this size, and for them to be a part of the volunteer staff and to see how much work goes into putting on this event is a great experience for them. They will see firsthand that with a
lot of teamwork from everyone, anything is possible,” Chris Lara said. Chris Lara said the cadets have to do service hours for the community as part of the Youth ChalleNGe program and Hike It and Spike It is one of the events they have volunteered for every year since 2001. “I believe that not only does the community benefit from NMYCA’s participation in this event, but our cadets get to see what goes into putting on such a huge event, Sabrina Lara said. “Hopefully, as these cadets graduate and return to their hometown, it will inspire them to get involved in their own community events.” The New Mexico Youth ChalleNGe is a 22-week residential program that works with youth ages 16 to 18 that have either dropped out of school or have struggled in a traditional high school setting. It is located a stone’s throw from the Eastern New Mexico State University-Roswell campus. The Roswell New Mexico Youth ChalleNGe program is the only one of 36 nationwide that offers cadets the opportunity to not only earn their GED but also earn 15 to 19 college credits simultaneously. They also offer “vocational training certifications, life-coping, job skills and character development,” Sabrina Lara said. Way executive director. “Each year, Hike It Spike It donates $5,000 to United Way of Chaves County because we are their charity of choice,” she said. “In return, we clean, inventory and store the advertising banners.” Mumford continued: “Each year, we hang the banners on the Friday prior
to Hike It Spike It, and we remove the banners on Sunday. Last year we had 15 volunteers helping with the banners.” Laura J. Weathers, United Way assistant director, said “banner detail” is a constant vigil, because banners are always knocked down by the wind and need to be put back up. Cla Avery and Jim Matteucci are the local organizers. Avery is a retired
educator who for several years also served as executive director of Character Counts! Character Counts! is once again the sponsor. Last year, Avery said 580 teams with 3,834 players competed. He said this year’s entries have surpassed that number, especially in the youth divisions. “We have two full divisions for 8 and under,” he said.
