DENNIS FREELS FLAGFOOTBALLX.COM
Welcome to the 2012 FlagFootballX.com Roswell Hike It and Spike It Tournament Predictions. This year will be the first year (I think) that a Jacksonville team has come to visit the Aliens, and yes, many people in Roswell REALLY believe in Aliens, or at least the ones who own the gift shops do. Jacksonville football, the little brother to Miami football, has recently produced a powerhouse team shaking things up in Florida. If this wasn’t disappointing news in itself to all the other teams in the tournament, the fact that Goose Crew (last year’s champion) has made the trip back to the desert is the icing on the worry cake. There are many teams in the tournament, though, that couldn’t be more disappointed in this opening or the predictions. They think they have more than what it takes to take home all the cash and will shake their heads when they read the following. So without further ado, here is the way I see things shaking out:
Tournament Favorites
Goose Crew — The ultimate tournament favorite has to be Goose Crew. These guys just seem to always figure out a way to win the big ones and, this year, they find themselves on the easy side of the bracket, making them an even larger tournament favorite. They will, however, be playing without the “king of flag football” Manny
THE GRIDIRON GAZETTE
Sanabia. They also may have revealed their Achilles’ heel recently with big losses in Florida. Everyone loses from time to time, so we haven’t taken them out of the top spot for a couple setbacks. These guys are just too tough to bet against, but the armor could have a few cracks. Luckily for them, there are few other teams coming in with a lot of momentum and experience. S k i n — Veteran QB Chuck Lozano, fresh off a big tournament victory in Los Angeles, brings a talented and well-disciplined group of playmakers together to grab some of the money. A few of the guys on the team play flag football like magicians and they may have what it takes to win if they can get in sync early. They drew the toughest quarter of the bracket and will need to put together a string of good games to make it to Sunday in the winners bracket. They have done it more than once, which is why they are one of the tournament favorites. Missing a few key components keeps them in the No. 2 spot. Get Off Me — Holt brings his list of top athletes to Roswell for their first taste of the Roswell culture. Winner of some of the recent top 4-on-4 tournaments in Florida, Get Off Me could be the shocker of the tournament if they can sync to the new rules fast enough. It’s a long way from Jacksonville and rumor has it that these guys are going to drive the whole way. Not sure how that translates into being ready to play football the next day, but we will see. Sources say they have defeated Goose
Crew (our tournament favorite) the last two times they have played in Florida. This should make for some entertaining match-ups, something the Roswell Hike It and Spike It tournament has been missing the last few years. Blackout — The third-place team from last year follows the other tournament favorites due to the loss of key players Derrick “Black” Jackson and Chad Dixon and the fact that they haven’t played much 4-on-4 since last year. The team is filled with big playmakers at each position, including jump-ball king Mr. Fred and big-time wide r eceiver Jef f Cavanaugh. The key to their success will be if they can pick up where they left off a long time ago, and, do it one BIG PLAYMAKER short. They may or may not have what it takes to repeat their success in 2010 and take home all the money, but they have as good a shot as anyone else.
In It to Win It
Reign — This may be the shocker team in the tournament. After rough showings the past two years, these guys are looking better than ever. According to some scouting reports, they haven’t lost a tournament or league game since January. Look for veteran QB Mike Lucyk to be on target throwing to one of the best wide receivers in flag football, Jason Kayhill. Hopefully Lucyk can make it on the plane this time so that he doesn’t have to drive all the way from Ohio! Penguins — Quarterback Jason Moore’s
Memorial Day Weekend 2012
Penguins fought a long battle last year through the losers bracket and proved that they have every right to be in the running. They bring back most of their same team and look to put the pieces together to make another run. They have an easier draw this year, without too much of a challenge until late Saturday. These guys can win the tournament if they get the breaks they need in the big games. Vikings — The Vikings are led by veteran QB Bo Green and are looking to capitalize on some great tournament showings over the past year, including a big win in the FlagFootballX.com Cowboys Stadium Summer Tournament and as the leader of the World Team in the Florida vs, The World Tour nament in Destin, Florida. These guys are fast and fearless and will come at you with everything they have every play. If Bo can put together a good game plan, they could be dangerous. Sent to the losers bracket early last year, they played six more games before losing to Skin. This year, they will be tested early against Goose Crew and may have to fight all weekend if they can’t tame the Goose early. NX Level — Mr. Mo leads his NX Level team into Roswell without much fanfare, but you can’t ever take the top team from Phoenix lightly. NX Level reminds you of the Dallas Cowboys, a team that used to make a lot of noise but hasn’t been able to See MONEY, Page 5

put the pieces back together for quite some time now. With brief glimpses of hope over the past three years, the team from Phoenix will either continue to disappoint their old fans or bring back a little of the old-school glory. These guys used to have a large cult following in Roswell and have won more tournaments than most of the teams combined in Arizona. The question is, can they figure out a way to do it again in the Roswell sun or will the mojo be lost forever? They have what it takes to sneak into the money without anyone looking.
Could Make Some Noise
O u t k a s t s — A tough gr oup of flag-football junkies looking to break out and make a name for themselves. Most of the guys on the team have multiple championships under their belts, however, they don’t have any under the name Outkasts. They can play with almost anyone since all of them know the art of flag football, however, the science of 4on-4 still r emains just beyond their reach. Look for them to show up thinking they can grab it, though. They may be overpowered by experience in their first game of the tournament against Ohio Reign. This will make for a long tournament, especially since they are playing co-ed (which, coincidently, they will probably finish first or second). Phresh Excel — Sneed and Little Joe lead the talented Amarillo team back to Roswell for another chance to break through. This young team has a lot
of talent and could surprise some people if they get rolling. One of the bestlooking teams fr om last year to lose early. Swagger — Swagger is bringing their cor e-four back to Roswell and picking up two new guys. The lack of time in big tournaments together as a group may hurt these guys, but you can never count them out. If the veterans can get the young ballers on board before it’s too late, these guys may surprise some people. House — Looking to capitalize on a couple key victories fr om last year, including a big win against Reign while Lucyk was in the car, veteran QB Maestas brings his arsenal to the Roswell desert to hopefully break into the upper ranks. These guys can play with anyone, but haven’t been able to make it to the top. The lack of big tournaments in Colorado may hurt them since they only see competition like this once or twice a year. These guys will be very athletic and ready to do whatever it takes to win; they ar e a group that always seems to leave it on the field. Hitmen — Joshua Harvey leads his core group into Roswell to try and capitalize on a r ecent good showing where they lost a close game to powerhouse Skin in California. Some recent injuries and family functions are keeping a few of the regulars out, so look for some new faces as they seek to win a few games. They will have to do it in the losers bracket, though, as we have them as a huge under dog in their first game to Florida powerhouse Get Off Me. Squad — A couple of big game veterans, some great athletes and a few newbies make up this crosswordpuzzle team. How they will do is anybody’s guess since
THE GRIDIRON GAZETTE
they have one of the most interesting Dallas mixes to partake in the mass exodus west out of North Texas this week. Top veteran QB Ty Hamlin will be playing with an entirely new cast, including newto-the-four-man game Will Cole. I think he can jump over a goal post fr om a standing position; if not, he gets really close, and, is a serious football player to boot. Sparq — A huge lack of experience in Roswell will hurt this great gr oup of athletes. They all can ball, but doing it together in Roswell may be more than they can handle. Top Texas veteran QB Maurice Studymire isn’t scared one bit, though; he has been in mor e than his shar e of money tour naments in Texas and, with big playmakers Quinton McKinney and Joey Barletta, he may have the confidence he needs to get the job done, especially if they can get the other guys up to speed. With veteran rusher Chad Stephens and Chappie Sinclair -type coach Reggie Shields bringing them all together in Roswell, they could surprise some doubters. A f f l i c t i o n — J-DUB leads another Amarillo team back to Roswell for pr obably his 20th trip. They never make it very far, but he is always tough to beat. They are probably the best team in the tournament to never really win anything. Not sure why. Young Gunz — This is a great group of very fast flag-football players. They may surprise someone this weekend if some things go their way. Once again, the lack of good local competition in El Paso over the year will keep this team down. They never have a chance to play anyone to get ready for this tournament. Don’t sleep on them,
though, they were a few dropped passes last year from shocking some people.
Would Take an Alien Invasion
Playaz — A good group of guys that probably lead the way in Roswell when it’s just the locals playing. They play hard and don’t like to back down fr om anyone. These guys will be one of the up-and-coming teams to watch over the next few years as they get a few more top tournaments under their belts. Wolfpac — These guys pulled of f the first big
upset of the tour nament last year against the Penguins, but fell quickly thereafter. Without much of a chance during the year to play against top teams, they will be at a big disadvantage to make much of a run in Roswell. Look for them to maybe pull off a couple early wins like last time, though, as they find themselves in an easy part of the bracket. Hounds — I don’t have any infor mation on this team, which usually means they are new to the sport and, therefore, don’t have much of a chance. Rockers — Another team
& OE 4U 3PTXFM M /.
Not Included in the Predictions
Dallas Full Armor — I will be playing with a mix of top Dallas-area players. We are all looking forward to the tour nament and wish everyone a safe journey to Roswell.

that I don’t know much about. They played last year and were eliminated early. Nos Stamos Una — No infor mation, pr obably won’t be a factor. Jim’s Jugger nauts — No information, probably won’t be a factor.
