Protect your vehicle from snow, ice and damage from the cold

Winter can be an unforgiving season. Freezing temperatures coupled with snow and ice can take its toll on people who live in climates where cold weather is a fact of winter life. While winter can test people’s patience, it also can be harsh on cars and trucks. Understanding what components of a vehicle can be compromised by dropping temperatures and snowy roads can help drivers take action to safeguard their automotive investments. While the Canadian Automobile Association notes that winter can wreak havoc on just about every part of a vehicle, there are some parts that seem to bear the brunt of Old Man Winter’s abuse. Properly servicing and caring for a car or truck can help. Drivers should take their vehicles for a tuneup and inspection before wintry weather arrives. A mechanic will examine the car battery and check antifreeze levels and make sure that the thermostat, defroster, brakes, and even wiper blades are working effectively. Have the tires inspected for adequate tread, which can make navigating roads safer. If the treads are worn, replace the tires. In addition to visiting their mechanics, drivers can perform some inspections and fixes themselves. • Check that all of the vehicle’s lights are operational

Scrapers should only be used on windows and not on the body of the car. so your car can be easily seen during inclement weather. Exchange your existing windshield washer fluid with one that will not freeze in cold conditions. Check the nozzles on the windshield-washer system routinely and clear out any blockages of ice or debris. While addressing windshield washer fluid, also replace worn out windshield wiper blades with ones that can withstand snow and icy weather. • A new coating of wax can serve as a shield against road salt, snow, sleet, and rain. Try a polymer wax to pro-

tect the paint. Whenever possible, rinse off salt and grime so it does not dry on the car and gradually wear away at the paint. Some drivers mistakenly believe that salt stops being a problem once it dries simply because moisture is the active ingredient for a corrosive reaction. But humidity in the air is enough to keep the salt eating away at the car’s paint, and that can contribute to rust. Be sure to rinse off the undercarriage of the vehicle as well. • Have your tires’ alignment checked toward the end of winter or early spring. A season of traveling over pothole-ridden roads or hitting curbs buried under snow drifts can affect the alignment. Get everything back on track. Similarly, inspect tires routinely, as weather changes can affect tire pressure and strength. • Use a soft snow brush or a foam brush to clear snow off of the car. Avoid hard plastic scrapers you might use on your windshield, as they can scratch painted surfaces. • Try to park the vehicle in a garage or under a car port, each of which can protect cars and trucks from the often harsh elements of winter. Vehicles can be affected by the cold weather. Keep them running efficiently to prevent damage this winter.

For over 60 years, Glenn’s Furniture has been a part of this thriving community. Founded in 1953 by Bill Sr. and Gloria Glenn, the original store was located downtown on Main Street between Roswell Tire and Appliance (formally Goodyear) and Roswell Seed, the location is now a parking lot. Wanting to expand, they moved to their present location in 1956. Newly paved Union Street, (Union and Alameda streets were gravel streets until 1955), was just two lanes back then and ended at Summit Street. Alfalfa fields were beyond that point across the irrigation canal. Now Glenn’s is located in the middle of town. Roswell has changed a lot since then, but Glenn’s is still family owned and operated by 2nd and 3rd generation owners, Bill Jr., his sister Pat Glenn, and Bill’s daughter Melanie Glenn Bannister. 4th generation Ryder Eugene Bannister (3.5 years old) is occasionally at the store to give his advice and wisdom to grandpa for day to day operations. Their main focus, as always, has been to have the best selection of QUALITY FURNITURE at the lowest prices. Glenn’s Furniture carries a large selection of Bedroom, Living Room, Casual Dining and Dining Room furniture, including Serta I-Comfort & I-Series Premium Mattress Sets, Daybeds, Complete Bedroom Sets, Coffee and End Tables, Sofa/Console tables, Curio Cabinets, Pictures, Lamps, Floor Lamps, Mirrors, Grandfather Clocks, Electric Fireplace/TV Stands, Flat Screen TV Stands and Media Cabinets, Bars and Barstools, Counter Height Dining Sets, Power Reclining Sofas, Loveseats, Recliners, Lift Recliners, Sleepers, Sectionals, Chairs, Ottomans and much more. You name it, most likely Glenn’s has it in stock ready to be delivered. Located on the corner of Alameda and Union, in Roswell, New Mexico, Glenn’s Furniture is your one-stop home furnishings store, featuring friendly service, everyday low prices, FREE Expert Delivery and SERVICE after the sale. Sun Country Realty – Strong Roots in Roswell

Lynn Graves has been a licensed Realtor™ in Roswell for over 30 years. Born and raised on Graves farm just east of Town, Graves’ roots run deep here in the Pecos Valley. “As a young man I spent so much time working on the farm that I didn’t know what Roswell looked like west of the auto parts store.â€? Graves remembers. Graves’ parents instilled a strong work ethic and a love of community in him, and when he returned home from college, he took the time to get to know his home town. He’s been busy ever since.

One of the ways Graves has given back to his community was by purchasing fixer-uppers, making them safe and nice to live in, and then selling them to people who could not get financing. He takes pride in the fact that he never raised the price of the houses beyond the cost of purchase and repairs. His only income came from the interest. Many people in Roswell have houses now because they worked with him. He’ll tell you he’s not in Real Estate for the money, but for the fun and excitement of the deal. “It makes me feel great to see a person connect with a dream, he says. Graves has a long history of volunteering in Roswell and Chaves County. He has worked with the East Grand Plains Volunteer Fire Department for years, been a member of the Elks Club, the Chamber of Commerce, and is a past president of the Roswell Red Coats, the part of the Chamber of Commerce that welcomes new businesses and holds open houses. He has always preferred to hold just enough listings to ensure he could give them the personal attention they needed. Helping sellers and buyers connect is Graves’ idea of a great day’s work. His informal style and strong roots give you a sense of being at home when you work with him. “A cup of coffee and a friendly chat is probably the best tool I use in my business. He says. Come see Lynn Graves at Sun Country Realty, 600 W. 2nd, or call him at 626-7506 for personal, knowledgeable service and maybe a good chat over coffee.

Historical Museum has a bright future

Mary Lou Glass grew up sliding down the banister of that beautiful old house on 2nd and Lea. “The statue always stopped our slow decline” She said. J.P. White and his wife Lou Tomlinson White had her father D.Y. Tomlinson begin construction on the house in 1910. They moved into the house in 1912, the same year that New Mexico became a state. Lou lived there for 60 years. The house was designed after a Frank Lloyd Wright creation in Fort Worth, Texas. The Prairie Style is as unique a piece of architecture in Roswell now as it was 103 years ago. Its gently sloping roof with a variety of lengths, large overhangs, and large porches make the house a memorable thing of unique beauty among Roswell’s other historical homes. When Lou White passed away in 1972 the family decided to donate the building to the Chaves County Historical society. Since 1976 the Chaves County Historical Museum has been an active part of Roswell’s everyday life. Curating Roswell and the surrounding area’s history has been one vital part of the events at the museum. Tours, weddings, meetings, special displays, book signings and just about any kind of gathering that celebrates or fosters decisions has happened at that beautiful old building and its carefully tended yard. In the nearly 40 years since the doors were opened to the

public, the museum has steadily grown to serve more and more of Roswell’s needs. The Chaves County Historical Society kept their archives in the basement and on the third floor until the Archives building was completed next door. Now the crates of pictures and documents that had been so carefully recorded and stored are available to the public from 1-4 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and by appointment. You can see over 12,000 historical and vintage photographs that are kept in the Archives building. Many of those pictures have been used in a variety of books about the history of this area. The museum is open 7 days a week from 1-4 p.m. Chaves County has a rich history. From the first settlers, the Jumano people, of the 16th century, through their descendants the Apaches and the Comanches. From the Spanish expeditions of Antonio De Espejo and Gaspar Castáño De Sosa in the late 1500s to the 1891 discovery of the Artesian Basin; the beginning of our agricultural development, the Pecos Valley has been an active hub for a variety of cultures. It still is. You can learn about all of this and much more at the Museum and at the Archives building. The displays at the Historical Museum are changed frequently to show life in Chaves County through the generations. The second floor renovation, which is still ongoing, will be offering a fashion room, showing the various fashions that were popular in Roswell over the decades. The sleeping porch that Glass remembers for its sleepovers, and waking up to her grandmother’s homemade waffles, will be a timeline room with a linear point-to-point display of our history, with highlights on the more salient points. They are also planning a video room, where you will be able to watch presentations of the works of many of Chaves County’s historians. The Historical Society is dedicated to teaching the area’s history, and has 2 teaching units for elementary school and middle school, which they encourage the schools to take advantage of. Roswell High School’s History Club volunteers at the museum regularly and the kids have been a big help with getting the archives organized. Tours are available from 4th grade up, and any volunteer involvement is eagerly welcomed. If you appreciate fine architecture, the choices made when the building was erected will hold you rapt for hours on end. From the small touches, such as monogrammed bricks on the front porch pillars, to the foresight that went into hanging chandeliers that worked both with natural gas (the common source of household lighting at the time)

and with electricity (the coming thing), there is so much to impress the discerning eye. No detail was spared. An open secret about the museum is the sleeping porch. Since the museum has been open the sleeping porch looked like a room that was crowded with high shelves. It was a bit dark. That has changed! Now you will be able to stand in that room, looking out the west-facing windows and imagine what Mary Lou and her family must have enjoyed for so many nights over so many years. Back when that house was built, and for many years after, there was nothing between that wall of windows and a glorious New Mexico sunset. Imagine sitting in that room of an evening with a good book and a cold drink. You could see El Capitan and Sierra Blanca as well as any activity along the road west to the mountains and Lincoln County. When that part of the renovation is completed you’ll be able to stand in that sleeping porch, study the timeline on the wall, and look out those vast windows imagining what was visible from that vantage point. Roswell has a rare and beautiful gem in the Chaves County Historical Museum. Not only do we have so much of our history carefully tended for us to learn about, we have opportunities to know what it was like to live in those times. We have opportunities to make the splendor that is the Historical Museum a part of our lives by getting married there, having receptions or photo shoots there, or even holding business meetings in the archives building next door. After a tour of the museum, stop on the front porch, and look around the yard. Note the wide steps and the equally broad walkway. Note the old trees that have witnessed so much at that intersection. Then imagine what it must have been like 60 years ago when young Mary Lou Glass walked up those steps to visit her grandmother. Finally, imagine the excitement young J.P. White and his bride Lou Tomlinson White must have felt on that day 103 years ago, when, walking up those same steps, they first set foot in their new home. The museum is open daily from 1 to 4 p.m. and office hours are Monday – Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Archives building is open Monday-Wednesday-Friday from 1 – 4 p.m. Admission is free, and donations are gratefully accepted. The museum operates solely on private donations. The museum is closed Easter, July 4th, Thanksgiving day, Christmas Eve Christmas and Day, and New Years Eve and New Years Day. Feel free to call 622-8333 or email Amy Davis at historydirector@outlook.com with any questions or if you wish to use the museum. The phone for the archive building is 622-1176

Roswell Nissan builds valued personal relationships with community members Reaching out to new Roswell Residents, supporting kids’ sports, and much more.

It’s no accident that Nissan makes some of the best family vehicles around. If Roswell Nissan is any indication, Nissan is all about family.

Michael Moore, General Manager at Roswell Nissan is proud and grateful to be working where he is. “We have Santa Claus in the dealership every Saturday from the Friday after Thanksgiving until the weekend before Christmas. Each kid gets a free toy and a photo of themselves with Santa (photos are by recommended donation, half of which goes to the CASA program). Our Santa won’t tell you ‘You’ll shoot your eye out kid!’” Says Moore. They are also starting a “Gifts for Grades” program. Each semester kids with good grades register their report cards, and their name is entered into a drawing right before Christmas. Moore says “We want to encourage families to support their kids doing well in school.” Roswell Nissan sponsors many kids in sports and cheerleading throughout the school year and they offer Lunch with Law Enforcement. In the month of October they have a Tailgate party on Saturday. Football games will be shown on 4 flatscreen TVs and during a major game Roswell Nissan will give away one TV every quarter. And in November they give away free turkeys.

Roswell Nissan and all the dealerships in the Krumland group were started by Tom and Linda Krumland, over the years they have hired a lot of families to help them grow their dealerships. Now they are proud to reach out to Roswell families in gratitude for all the support you have given them as they build their company and serve Roswell. “We have worked with the Chamber of Commerce in the past and we are excited to continue doing so.” Said Moore. His wife Andrea is president of the Roswell Red Coats. Michael and Andrea Moore along with Team Roswell Nissan are devoted to the growth of the family that is Roswell. One of the more personal touches Moore has brought to Roswell Nissan is to send invitations to people who are moving out of Roswell. He offers them a free oil change and car inspection. He says “We feel good knowing that when someone is about to hit the highway for a long trip, we’re sending them out in a reliable car.” He also offers the same opportunity to people just moving in to Roswell. “We want to build a good relationship with people as they settle in Roswell. We want them to know where they can get good honest care for their car.” Roswell Nissan is diligent about taking care of their people. Moore wanted to emphasize “On behalf of everyone that works at Roswell Nissan, we are very blessed to be working with Tom and Linda Krumland.” Roswell Nissan is located at 2111 W. Second Street and you can call them at 888-409-6286. Their website is roswellnissan.com

Dogs and their unique relationship with weather

Owning a dog is a big responsibility, but one that also provides a companion whose love is unconditional. Dog owners quickly learn their four-legged friends respond differently than humans to certain situations, including the changing weather. Many dog owners may notice that their pets seem particularly attuned to the weather. Changing weather can affect canines much like it does people, but dogs may also be affected in ways their owners are not. According to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, dogs can feel changes in barometric pressure and even in the static electric field that occurs in the air. The American Animal Hospital Association says dogs’ behavioral changes may be attributable to changes in the weather. Dogs may become agitated or overexcited by dips in barometric pressure. As electrical storms approach, some dogs may get very anxious, even running and hiding if their anxiety is especially high.

Dogs also can sniff out storms, detecting concentrations of chemicals common during some storms. Dogs can smell ozone in the air associated with lightning as well. Dogs may be physically affected by weather just like their owners are.
