Welcome to Roswellʼs first ever mud run!
M
By Barbara Gomez Event Organizer
ud & Obstacle races have become the rage not just in the state of New Mexico but throughout the U.S. Mud racers or “Mudders” as they known, travel miles outside of Roswell to participate in muddy, sweaty, fun races that challenge their agility, strength & running ability. Roswellʼs first mud & obstacle race was conceived with the notion of “why not here in Roswell?” Why shouldnʼt we bring the excitement here and give Roswell Mudders their own race while bringing in those willing to travel. Roswell Mud, Sweat & Tears will provide a challenging 1.5 or 5k course with up to 20 obstacles including; hay climbs, tire maze, mud trails, dirt hills, culverts, A-frame swing, tire climb, mud crawl & more. The course is challenging enough for veteran mudders & first time wannabees. Runners 12 years and older can enjoy the fun. The race will also include fun for all ages at the Noon Optimist park area on the corner of Montana Ave & College Ave with Vendor booths, BBQ & Hot Dog vendors, Music, 4 ROSWELL MUD SWEAT AND TEARS

Entertainment, Challenges and spectator areas for the general public to cheer on your “Mudder.” Afterward the Mud Crawl area will be open to children 12 years & younger. Races will start at 9:00 a.m. with a tribute to NM wounded warriors with a color run by the American Legion Riders & Patriot Riders. First runners out will represent NM wounded warriors with the Wounded Warrior Run & will continue till all racers complete the course. A portion of registration proceeds will benefit “Operation Wounded Warrior NM” so come out & enjoy this event and help make this an annual happening!
Mud Sweat and Tears Overview
M
By Amy Vogelsang Record Staff Writer ud. Sweat. Tears. Well hopefully there aren't any real tears, but with competition so fierce all bets are off. Barbara Gomez is the queen of coordinating events: she absolutely loves putting events together. Every time she finishes one, she is looking to start another, Gomez said of herself. And she loves Roswell, but she's "always looking for something fun to do," she said. So she decided to combine interests: Roswell plus a fundraising event. This resulted in "Roswell Mud, Sweat and Tears," or in other words, a mud run. "I jump for something fun," Gomez explained. "And mud runs seem to be all the rage." She wanted the proceeds of a fun event, however, to go toward a good cause. So she looked into benefiting the Wounded Warriors Project. So what exactly is a mud run? Well in short terms, it's a race filled with obstacles involving getting very muddy, aka, a race where you wear the oldest clothes you have. And since Wounded Warriors already have their own muddy track, Gomez said the money made from T-shirt sales, a portion of registration and a VIP after party will go toward Operation Wounded WarRey Berrones Photo riors New Mexico. So the mud run: it will be vicious on some levels, but some aspects will offer a The undeveloped pits and mounds of dirt between Noon Optimist Park and the Roswell Model Aircraft Runway will soon be filled with less intense environment. There will be three options when water to create mud and obstacles. entering the event: single runner, which is self-explanatory, a fun group entry of at least 5 members per group, and this will not be timed but simply fun, or the third option, an elite race for groups who are "out there for blood." The elites will all be head to head grudge matches, and this will be the only section timed with prizes at the end. There will be two course: a 1.5 mile or a 5K. But don't be fooled. Both courses will have eight to ten obstacles, and you will NOT emerge unscathed at the end. There will be no avoiding the mud. So what type of obstacles are we talking about here? I'm glad you asked. Without giving away all the surprises and secrets, some predicted obstacles include climbing over bales of hay, a tire climbing wall, crawling through drain pipes, balancing on rails so you don't fall in the mud and a rope swing to escape muddy pits. This muddy business is too intense for little kids, so only those 12 years of age or older can participate. Register online at roswellmud.racesonline.com, and there will be a pre-registration party at Pepper's on Friday, Sept. 27, from 5-7:30 p.m. The actual event will be Saturday, Sept. 28, at the northwest uncultivated area of Noon Optimist Park. And afterwards, a VIP after party will take place at Oasis Bar and Grill at 9 p.m, Tickets to be a VIP for the evening are $10. immy Montoya is taking the NCO creed of leading by example to heart. He has stepped up to create an Elite Challenge team that will represent the Wounded Warriors during the Roswell Mud Sweat and Tears. His team will be the first to hit the mud during the event, and Montoya said that as part of the Legion Riders, and the American Legion, it fits in with what they are trying to do as an organization. "We are involved in the community, and the Mud Run is a good representation of what we do," Montoya said. He continued, "I was going to do this as an individual because we couldn't find any

So that's why I was going to do it, to represent all Chaves County Wounded Warriors, past 8 ROSWELL MUD SWEAT AND TEARS

Joining him on his team is Jessica Eastman, Brandy McMillan, Kenny McMillan and Jennifer Tucker. Montoya, joined the Guard in 1981, and was activated during Desert Storm. He left the Guard as a Staff Seargent, with his obligation to our country being complete on 9-11. Montoya wants his actions to inspire people to give to Operation Wounded

merican Legion Riders from across New Mexico rolled into Roswellʼs Post 28 parking lot Sept. 23 afternoon in an effort to ferry supplies to wounded warriors. Unfortunately, the donation-filled trailer they were escorting broke down outside of Moriarty. But, the detour didnʼt stop many of them from carrying on. “We noticed the smoke from the tire,” said Ralph Sadroe of Grants, who was taking his third trip for the New Mexico Operation Wounded Warrior ride. “It took the whole wheel off. Fortunately no one got hurt.” Two riders returned to
Moriarty with the trailers, dropped it off and will rent another trailer for the remainder of the ride to San Antonio. Bikers from Northwest and Northeast New Mexico converge in Albuquerque then pick up riders and donations as they pass American Legion posts while riding through the state. The destination is Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, where a military medicine hospital treats veterans suffering traumatic wounds received in combat. The riders are housed for a few days and given time to visit with the patients. “Itʼs a very moving experience,” said Santiago
Vasquez, of Post 28. “Itʼs good for both of them. The veterans whoʼve already experience war, theyʼre going over there and offering them a hand.” The items collected included clothing the wounded veterans could wear in the hospital, like Tshirts and socks, and toothpaste or personal items. Roswell riders met the other motorcyclists near Vaughn to escort them the rest of the way to town. They pulled into Post 28 just before 5 p.m. to stay overnight before heading out Sept. 24 for another stop in Fort Stockton. After that, they will end their journey in San Antonio. “If youʼve ever been there
and seen these kids, it really breaks youʼre heart,” Sadroe said. “We feel weʼre really doing something.” Financial donations are used to buy families of the patients phone cards, toys, incidentals, blankets and gift cards for local supermarkets. “They usually come with nothing,” Sadroe said. Although the trailer full of supplies will already be in Fort Sam Houston by the time the Mud Sweat and Tears begins, the Legion Riders view the mud run as the start of their fundraising for the coming year. They are on a constant mission to provide health and comfort items to as many wounded military service personnel as possible. The riders encourage everyone to come down, check out the run and donate funds or health and comfort items that will go out to Operation Wounded Warrior NM. After the mud run is over, the Riders will get involved in other community activities, such as the annual toy run that benefits CASA, or military escorts and color guard activities around the community.
