Roswell Daily Record

Small Business Saturday set for Nov. 28 The City of Roswell recently recognized the upcoming Small Business Saturday with a proclamation encouraging citizens to recognize the importance of local small businesses by shopping at these establishments this coming Saturday as well as throughout the year. Promoted on a national level by the U.S. Small Business Administration, Small Business Saturday is designated annually as the day after Black Friday, the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season. Locally, the City of Roswell, Roswell Chamber of Commerce, Roswell Hispano Chamber of Commerce, Roswell-Chaves County Economic Development Corporation, MainStreet Roswell and the Small Business Development Center at Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell have come together to promote Roswell small businesses by encouraging residents in and around the city to shop locally this holiday season. More local sales means more local gross receipts taxes collected. Those taxes — collected on most items sold and services rendered — are the major funding source for the services and amenities the city provides to its residents and businesses. The city uses the GRT revenue to operate everything from basic services such as fire protection, police,

roads, water and sewers, to amenities like the Spring River Park and Zoo, Roswell Museum and Art Center and Nancy Lopez Golf Course at Spring River. Roswell’s small businesses are major providers of residents’ everyday needs when it comes to goods and services. When people choose to shop at small local businesses, they make a huge impact in this community by supporting an important cornerstone of the local economy. At the same time, strong numbers of customers patronizing local businesses encourage the entrepreneurial spirit that created existing businesses and can inspire others to be added to the community’s retail offerings. “Small business owners are on the front lines when it comes to creating new jobs and opportunities,” President Obama said in a message released by the U.S. Small Business Administration. The President described local small business owners as “helping provide the jobs, products and services that enrich our lives, shape our communities, and move our economy forward.” The President referred to Small Business Saturday as an opportunity for “ensuring ours is a country where small businesses can thrive.”

Advent Festival of lessons and music at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church

Thursday, November 26, 2015

C5

December 2012 as a way to reflect on and celebrate the season preceding Christmas Day, the season known as Advent. Our goal has always been to welcome all people in the community to participate in and attend the program, and this year we have musicians and singers from at least six different churches and traditions from around the Roswell area.

St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, at the Northeast corner of 5th and Pennsylvania. Come enjoy the Advent Festival Sunday December 6, from 2-3 p.m. Janet Macaluso, Choir Director at St Andrew’s Episcopal Church offers a bit of respite in the midst of a busy holiday season. St Andrew’s Advent Festival began, in its present form, in

The weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas are increasingly full of events, commitments, and endless to-do lists. Despite our own good intentions, it can seem impossible to find time to experience the peace, joy and anticipation of this “in-between” season. In the Christian tradition, Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus. It is the time when light and hope returned to the world in the form of a newborn baby, God’s own son. For those who believe and celebrate this glorious event, a time of preparation seems fitting. That’s what the season of Advent is supposed to be…a time to prepare. I don’t mean prepare decorations, outfits, or buffets. I mean prepare ourselves, our hearts and minds, to receive the gift of light, to be renewed. This requires at least a little “down time.” Time when we stop making lists. Time when we look…to see the needs of others. Time when we listen…to children’s prayers and holiday music. Time when we let ourselves experience childlike wonder at all that is around us. Time when we quiet our spirits for just a few moments of reflection. One of my favorite songs that our St Andrew’s choir often sings at this time of year is, “Make My Life a Bethlehem” by Craig Courtney. The text likens our hearts to the manger in which Jesus would be born. The chorus is, “Make my life a Bethlehem, a manger of my heart. Let me hear the angels sing, and let the music start. May I fall in simple faith and wonder to my knees. In the manger of my heart, let Christ be born in me.” If our Advent Festival can give us all the chance to hear the angels sing and feel peace for an hour, then we’ll have done what we set out to do.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Keep the holidays safe Tokay beaded art gallery While traveling and shopping, take proper precautions and be aware of surroundings

Many people will be embarking this week on Thanksgiving trips to see family and friends in other areas of the state or country — and again as Christmas approaches. Making plans to leave town should also include plans to protect your home and belongings while you are gone. Meanwhile, Thanksgiving weekend marks the first big shopping days of the season. That means there are thieves out there doing their own shopping — looking for the easiest targets from whom to steal items, information or identities. But with the right precautions and awareness, people can protect themselves against criminals who would threaten to rob them of more than their Christmas cheer. Going out of town • Avoid telltale signs of an unoccupied house: Stop all regular deliveries such as mail that would collect in your mailbox and newspapers that would otherwise pile up outside. Leave some indoor lights on or put them on a timer. Leave a radio or TV on, or have someone check on your house daily and ask them to turn the radio or TV on and off when they come and go at different times. • Notify trusted neighbors that you will be gone and give them your contact information. You can also contact the Roswell Police Department or your local law enforcement agency to request “close patrols” of your residence while you are gone. Protecting your home • Keep your property clean to eliminate hiding spots, install an alarm system and lighting (motion-sensor lights serve the purpose without having to be on constantly), keep a dog in the yard, only open your garage door when you are pulling a vehicle in or out, don’t leave valuables (that includes Christmas gifts) where they can be seen from a window, and, of course, lock your doors and windows. • Start a Neighborhood Watch to promote cooperation among neighbors in watching out for each other’s homes and properties. To learn more, call the Roswell Neighborhood Watch program at 6227233. • After all the gifts are unwrapped Christmas morning, take the boxes and packaging that held the expensive items to a recycling bin or the landfill rather than placing them in your nearby city trash container. Depositing them in the neighborhood container tips off burglars as to what nice, new things can be found inside nearby homes and vehicles. Parking lots at stores • Park in an area with good lighting that is not too far from the store’s entrance and the exit you plan to use. Do not leave your purchased items or valuables in plain sight in your vehicle. Do not have personal, confidential documents or information in the car unnecessarily. Be sure to lock your doors. • Go with another person or a group, especially if shopping at night. If you can, try to sched-

ule your shopping trips during daylight hours. Regardless of whether you are alone or with others, always watch what is going on around you and remain constantly aware of your surroundings. • Take with you only the credit or debit cards you plan to use and carry them on you directly instead of in a purse. Leave other cards at home, not in your vehicle. Also, avoid carrying large amounts of cash, and keep any cash in your front pockets, which are more difficult than back pockets for pickpockets to reach. It’s also a good idea to avoid wearing expensive jewelry, which will attract the attention of thieves. • Beware of strangers approaching you. Christmastime brings out con artists and other criminals who have a wide variety of methods designed to distract you so they can steal your money or other belongings. If you are threatened or assaulted by someone, your keys can be used as a weapon. You should have them out and ready to unlock your vehicle even before you exit the store so you won’t have to spend time standing outside your vehicle getting a handle on your keys — and giving time for a criminal to go on the attack. When in a store • Even though you may be concentrating on picking out the right gifts for family and friends, pay attention to those around you. If someone is acting suspiciously, report it to store personnel. • During a credit-card or debit-card transaction, keep your eye on your card if you must hand it to the store clerk. Don’t forget to get it back. Make sure someone else isn’t sneaking a peek at the keypad while you are entering your PIN during a transaction. • Never sign a blank receipt. Make sure anything you sign accurately reflects your purchase. Online and on the phone • Do not give your account numbers or any other financial or personal information to anyone on the phone unless you initiated the call and know the company/person you are dealing with is reputable. When online, do not open emails from sources you do not recognize. Even then, be aware that email scammers and identity thieves will often send emails disguised as coming from well-recognized, reputable stores and companies, so click with caution. • When creating online shopping accounts, make sure the site is secure (secure sites will usually begin with “https”, with the “s” being the key). Also, create strong passwords that use a good number of characters and include uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols. • This time of year is a popular time for charities to make phone solicitations seeking donations. Make sure you trust that the caller actually does represent the entity he or she claims to represent. Consider taking an extra step of asking for a phone number to call the headquarters of the charity or have them send you official printed donation information in the mail.

A few miles east of San Antonio, New Mexico, and just west of Highway 380 is a ghost town called Tokay. The original buildings have been moved to Socorro, and the land is now part of a private ranch. Juanita Finger owned a part of Tokay, and the

name has always stuck with her. So she chose the name Tokay Beaded Art Gallery. Tokay Beaded Art Gallery is the only gallery of its kind in the United States. Located at 1407 W. Second, and due to open January 28, 2016, the gallery will present only juried pieces for sale. “I want to make it a beader’s destination, as well as a destination for all artists to realize that there are an infinite number of mediums,” said Finger. Finger purchased the building at 1407 W. Second, and has been remodeling it. She will be renting three warehouse spaces in the back, and is looking to the community to make the building stand out. “I will be calling for graffitists to hire so that I can have a unique mural along the west wall of my building,” she said. Finger will be showing beaded creations from around the world, and will offer classes both online and in her gallery. There will be openings for artists happening

for the following: 1) The piece must be made of at least 80% beads 2)
It must be artistic - creative and imaginative
 3) The techniques must be well done and difficulty of technique will also be considered. 4)
The piece must be unique in nature or one of a kind
 5) Salability is of course important, the first one in kind is a given considering the nature of the gallery. She explained that the jurors consist of 2 beaders and 2 artists of non-beading media. The jurors will be asked to include comments for the artists, to help them know the effect their work is having and what they might do to improve at all levels. If a piece is accepted for show, she will offer the artist a 6 month consignment contract with 70% going to the artist. She looks forward to welcoming artists and customers in her store soon. Meanwhile, you can see Finger’s works at beadedfinger.com
