Blue vs. Red: Rockets and Coyotes meet for 57th edition of crosstown rivalry

By AJ Dickman Record Sports Editor

The Roswell Coyotes are off to their best start in years at 7-2. The Goddard Rockets have won fivestraight, including a huge victory last week over the No. 1 Artesia Bulldogs and sit at 6-3. A Goddard win will earn the Rockets a District 4-5A title and a likely first-round bye in the state playoffs. A Roswell win will cause a threeway tie in the district and trigger a points-based tiebreaker. There’s easily more

November 8, 2013 – For the second straight year, in what was also now-Roswell head coach Jeff Lynn’s first year at the helm of the Coyotes, Roswell again got a heavy dose of Goddard running back Dean McDaniel. McDaniel, who was again filling in for the injured Cody French, just as he was in the game in 2012, bulldozed his way to 201 yards on the ground to go with a pair of touchdowns on 26 carries. He also caught a 4-yard touchdown in the eighth shutout for Goddard in the Rocket/Coyote series (19th overall). Roswell, who was stymied yet again on offense by the Rockets, was led by J.J. Fiero with 29 rushing yards on eight carries. The Coyotes still made the state playoffs in Lynn’s inagural season, although they fell at Deming in the first round. Goddard eventually lost to Farmington in the state championship game. Auto Parts 575-622-7042

ly close, almost a mirror image of each other. We have similar philosophies — run the ball, play good defense.” “I think they’re a wellcoached, well-disciplined team,” said first-year head coach Chris White, who for the past decade-plus was a Rocket assistant. “I think coach (Art) Bolaños does an excellent job with his defense. He worked with me here for a couple state titles and he’s a really close friend. I know he’ll have his kids ready.” The Goddard rushing attack has mostly leaned on the 5-foot-9 frame of senior Devon Quiroz, who has carried the ball 142 times for 1,329 yards and 18 touchdowns. “No. 5 is a good player,” Lynn said. “He’s really patient and when he has to be, he’s physical.”

Blue White said Quiroz is everything you could ask for in a football player and team leader. “He does a lot of things for us and he’s been really steady all year,” he said. “He’s done what you’d hope seniors will do. He’s a great leader. He’s a polite, soft-spoken kid that just shows up to work everyday.” The Roswell backfield is the land of opportunity, where four backs have gained over 200 yards on the season, but the top threat is easily junior fullback Gabe Najar with 768 yards on 120 carries and nine touchdowns. On any given night, Daniel Sosa, Michael Ponce or quarterback Bear Kyser can lead the Coyotes in rushing. “(Najar) is a strong runner, so we have to play sound football, just like any other Friday night,” White said. “They have a good rushing attack all the way around with their

wings and fullback. They are pretty balanced and they make you play honest.” While Lynn is pleased with the output of his backfield, he also credits the offensive line for winning battles throughout the season. “I think in any game, the team that can control the line of scrimmage typically wins,” Lynn said. “I think both teams are pretty good on the fronts, both offensively and defensively. Their defensive front is probably as good as any we’ve seen so far.” While the ground game has been good to both squads, their passing attacks are also formidable, especially Goddard’s duo of junior quarterback Cameron Stevenson and junior wideout Diego Miranda, who has 19 receptions for 502 yards and seven scores. November 7, 2014 – In the closest game of the series in over a decade, Goddard again found a way to get a win, it’s 14th straight against its rival, the Coyotes. Roswell actually led at the half and even played the entire game without a turnover, but ultimately just couldn’t find a way to move the ball in the second half against the Rockets. Meanwhile, in this year’s matchup Goddard was offensively led by quarterback Cameron Neff, who accounted for over 300 yards of total offense, including 27 carries for 171 yards. Current Roswell quarterback Dominic Anaya, now a senior, made several big plays on offense for the Coyotes on the night, including scoring the lone touchdown and setting up the only other score, a field goal, with a 25-yard run up the middle.

November 6, 2015 – The Coyotes ended a 14-year skid against their cross-town rival, scoring 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to beat the Rockets for the first time since 2001. The teams traded touchdowns through the first 16 minutes of the game, stalemated at 14-all, until the Goddard defense stepped up, causing fumbles on consecutive Roswell offensive plays. The Rockets took advantage of the Coyote miscues, scoring twice to take a 28-14 lead into halftime. In the second half, each team scored putting the Goddard lead at 35-21 with 10 minutes left in the contest. But the Coyotes kept fighting, as quarterback Dominic Anaya connected with Jacob Miley for a 27-yard touchdown on fourth-and-12 to get within a touchdown of the Rockets. The Coyote defense forced a punt, marched down the field for the tying score, then forced another punt before Anaya led his team into the Goddard red zone once again to set up Isaiah De La Rosa’s game-winning touchdown.

“Stevenson is big, he’s athletic, he has a big-time arm. Just a really good player,” Lynn said. “I don’t think there’s any advantage for us having seen him before. If anything, they have the advantage because he’s got another year of experience. He’s awfully good and we’ll have to contain him. “Miranda is really fast. He can get behind you and make big plays. You gear up to stop the run and he can hurt you over the top. He’s also big in the return game. We definitely have our hands full.” Kyser, a first-year starting signal caller as a senior, has run the Coyotes’ ground-and-pound offense well, making good decisions in the option game and finding his receivers when it counts.

Blue Kyser has close to 1,000 yards passing on the year, with nearly 300 yards on the ground. “We’ve been giving him two or three things every week that he can go to if he sees something and it will be no different this week,” Lynn said. “We’ll continue to ask Bear to do what he’s done all year.” The Coyotes’ season has consisted of two threegame winning streaks, each of which was followed with a loss on the road to top 5A competition. After the last loss in Artesia, Roswell rebounded with a 55-3 dismantling of the Wildcats in Lovington. On the other side of the coin, the Rockets won their first game on the road, then lost three straight to 6A squads. Every contest was winnable for Goddard, but miscues handed the games away.

vs.

Red - Goddard-Roswell 2016

But since a 27-14 loss to Clovis back on Sept. 16, the Rockets have been juggernauts on the road and won two close home games against Alamogordo and Artesia, with a 55-0 shutout of Lovington sandwiched in between. Regardless of who wins tonight’s 57th meeting between the cross-town rivals, the state playoff seeding committee will have some tough decisions to make. It’s possible that both teams could earn a first-round bye and a home playoff game. But neither coach is very concerned about where they land in the playoff bracket. They are focused on the game in front of them. It’s a game that they believe shows off the positive side of Roswell. “There are a lot of issues in Roswell, but this is our See GHS/RHS, Page 15

Goddard’s Andres Villa chases down the Artesia quarterback during the Rockets’ 37-35 victory over the No. 1 Bulldogs Oct. 28 at the Wool Bowl.

Friday, November 4, 2016

After finally ending a 14-year losing skid to Goddard last year, the Coyotes will look to start their own streak, with the ultimate goal being a nice, long playoff run. The Rockets have the same goal in mind — another blue trophy. “I’ve never doubted what our kids are capable of doing,” White said. “I know people were writing us off earlier in the year,

but our kids kept believing, working hard and here we are with a chance to make the playoffs. I’m proud to be a Rocket.” “We’re excited,” Lynn said. “We’re gonna have fun and it’ll be a great atmosphere.
