oswell's history is inextricably bound to the Spanish
R and European Pioneer Days, when the young nation
of the United States of America was just a glimpse of hope and ideas to come. Archeologists are still trying to put the puzzle together of our areas past, which was inhabited long before the native tribes of Apaches, Navajo and Comanche tribes farmed and hunted the mountains and Pecos River Valley. Our harsh and unusual landscapes were formed millions of years ago, when today’s New Mexico was still part of the supercontinent Pangaea, and an ocean covered this region. Mountains that formed during that time are now eroded, but some of the features of the landscape remain. Our local archeologist clubs (hobby or professional) still find amazing treasures which include fossils, flint rock, stone age tools and shells in the neighboring mesa landscape. The first Europeans to traverse the area were part of Francisco Vasquez de Coronado's expedition in 15401542. Coronado was looking for the fabled Seven Cities of Gold. While he did not find these towns, Coronado and the following missionary monks brought treasures to the area: sheep, horses, pepper trees and grape plants, which would change the Comanche's and Apache's life forever in turning the pedestrian tribes into the first mounted tribes in the plains and changed the Navajos into artists and weavers.

Roswell History
The 20th Century kept Roswell on the map with first the Air Force continuing experimental flight training – and … if you believe in it or not: the UFO crash in 1947.
After the Air Force moved out in 1967, the city had to reinvent itself. Walker Air Force Base became an airplane storage facility and – thanks to an amazing gas and oil boom which continues on today in the 21st Century, the future of Roswell looks good, also because of Roswell diversifying as center for the arts with an International Artsin-Residence program, focus on tourism, a flexible University which supports the industrial interested students, health care, as well as the new multi-media and upcoming film-industry which has found New Mexico and Southeast New Mexico as friendly and welcoming hosts. In 2012, Roswell made history and again became center of science and adventure, when “Fearless Felix Baumgartner” departed from Roswell Airport in a balloon up into the stratosphere, jumping from a world record 39,045 meters (128,100 ft) and returned safely back to Earth.
Baumgartner also set the record for the highest manned balloon flight and fastest speed of a free fall at 1,342 kilometer per hour (834 mph) making him the first human to With the industrial age, Roswell started to attract in- break the sound barrier outside of a vehicle. dustrial entrepreneurs and scientists due to the stable yeararound good weather. Without those experiments, the United States would have later not won their race to the moon and begun the early human race's space exploration. After Goddard’s passing in 1945, his widow started a series of gifts to the Roswell Museum and Art Center of her husband's rocket technology, and in 1969 the Robert H. Goddard wing was dedicated. Names as Goddard, to Wernher von Braun are tightly connected to Roswell. Their rocket experiments made it possible for the USA to win the space race to the moon in the 60's. A great place to research is the Roswell Museum and Art Center and the Walker Aviation Museum. Then and now: The best attraction for experimental testing of new military planes and private companies is of course the stable weather in Southeast New Mexico.
It did not come as a surprise that the Red Bull Stratus Team chose Roswell Airport as headquarter for their newest project:
To send the charming Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner into the Stratosphere from where he would jump with the state-of-the-art new space suit and parachute back to the Pecos Valley.
After one delay, Felix stepped into the capsule on October 14, 2012, which pulled him with a helium balloon up into the stratosphere. A total success, the news spread in lightening speed around the world - a first for social media and YouTube who had the live event streaming to everybody who had a computer, reader or smart phone.
A result of this project, Felix set the altitude record for a manned balloon flight, parachute jump from the highest altitude, and greatest free fall velocity. Since then Roswell has been the center of attention at every award Felix Baumgartner received, every interview written about his amazing achievement.
Roswell is synonymous as a science and media friendly community where dreams come true!

Later in the season, near Labor Day, a gigantic sidewalk sale on Main Street downtown invites locals and visitors to shop and stroll.
Tell me what you eat, and I'll tell you who you are,” wrote renowned gastronome Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin in 1825. In Roswell food and culture goes hand-in-hand and is a pleasant and/or fiery experience to remember, depending on your likes.
Many visitors are surprised about the many authentic New Mexican, Mexican and Southwestern restaurants available in Roswell. Mexican Restaurants here are as diverse as our population... there is the Tex-Mex Style which is adapted to the American palate, Mexican – which is just as diverse as the country – with influences of Chihuahua, Mexico City (with its strong influences of Inca/Mayan/French and Spanish Taste), or Coast, all depending where the chef was trained.
The mom & pop restaurants serve home-style Mexican, are the rare gems of authentic New Mexican cuisine.
How can you decide how good a restaurant is? For Mexican and New Mexican restaurants a sure tell sign is the often complimentary salsa and chips as appetizer.
If you really like the salsa and the chips are warm and homemade, chances are you will love the menu, as well.

Very important is of course New Mexico's State Question: Red or Green?
Shopping & Dining
This refers to the sauce – green is most of the time milder and more aromatic, red is spicier and is an acquired taste.
The saying goes that the locals started this “acquired taste” legend to keep the red sauce for themselves... Try it for yourself.
An other tip: Do not judge from the outside. A humble building might offer the best food yet. You love a certain sauce or salsa? Talk to your hosts, they might sell it in jars and you can take it home with you. In no time you will know what dishes as barbacoa, tortas, chili verde/rojo are – and of course the more known burritos, enchiladas or fajitas Roswell style are available.

Maestro John Farrer became the director of the RSO for the 1972 season. Each year, the orchestra plays five classical concerts, a three-concert Chamber Music Series at the Roswell Museum and Arts Center, five Children's Educational Concerts for nearly 3,000 elementary school students in Roswell and Artesia and a free Labor Day Pops Concert at Spring River Park and Zoo. The "Send a Senior" program in which merchants sponsor season tickets, and the RSO Board of Directors match, are given away to seniors on a first come, first serve basis. If the senior citizen is immobile, transportation is provided from the J.O.Y. Center. These seniors might not otherwise be able to attend the concert.
New this year is the New Mexico Conducting Workshop hosted by the RSO. The first annual New Mexico Conducting Workshop is to be held June 17 through June 21, 2014 in Roswell, New Mexico. Hosted by the Roswell Symphony Orchestra - purveyor of classical music to southeastern New Mexico for fifty-four years - this is an event unlike any other event that has occurred in the City of Roswell. Roswell is also home to a variety of fantastic entertainers and a community band.

UFO Story

A up story ?
The answer depends on whom you ask ... There are the firm believers that no crash ever happened, skeptics who believe there was a cover-up, but it had nothing to do with aliens, and of course the avid believers that a real U.F.O. crashed in 1947 outside of Roswell.
The International UFO Museum and Research Center, located at 114 N. Main Street, is part of a non-profit educational organization formed in 1991 by Walter Haut, Glenn Dennis and local businessman Max Littell, principals in the Incident. Every year their Research Department helps students, authors, and researchers from around the world with information about UFO's, the Roswell Incident and even with tourist information for the media.
Front page of the Roswell Daily Record “RAAF Captures Flying Saucer”
Army Air Field and the 509th Bomber Wing. It was from RAAF that the Enola Gay took off in August of 1945 on its way to Hiroshima, Japan. Wilcox contacted personnel RAAF and Major Jesse Marcel, an intelligence officer, was sent to investigate.
On July 8, Lt. Walter Haut, RAAF public information officer, under orders from his commanding officer, Col. William Blanchard, issued a press release that stated, essentially, that the Air Force had a flying saucer in its possession.
On July 9th, this release was rescinded and a new statement that stated the material was a weather balloon was issued in its place. And the cover-up of the Roswell Incident began.
More then 66 years later, there are still more questions than answers. Investigators and researchers write books, filmmakers produce TV documentaries and feature length movies. Witnesses to varied otherworldly events come forward. Skeptics issue rebuttals. With the original witnesses passing, the story moves now into the realm of legends while the debate continues.
In early July 1947, rancher W.W. “Mack” Brazel came upon a debris field on the Roster ranch northeast of Roswell, where he was foreman. Not knowing if the material had a military connection, he took some of it to George Wilcox, Chaves County Sheriff. At that time, Roswell was home to Roswell
The mission of the International UFO Museum and Research Center is the education of the general public to all aspects of UFO phenomena. People from around the world travel to Roswell to see what the Museum has to offer. Exhibits include information on Roswell, crop circles, sightings, Area 51, ancient astronauts and abductions. The exhibits are designed to encourage visitors to ask questions and to think outside of the box.

Carlsbad
Carlsbad offers many fun activities. First and foremost of course is the beautiful Carlsbad Caverns National Park. The caverns might not be the largest in the United States, but they are known to be the most beautiful. If you are good on foot, we highly recommend walking down the steep 1¼-mile (2 km) descent equivalent to about 79 stories from the cave entrance to the Big Room. You can walk alone with an audio guide which you rent at the entrance or request a ranger guided tour. An elevator is available.
