As Turner Classic Movies’ Star of the Month tribute to you continues Thursday, Feb. 16, your Oscar-winning turn in “West Side Story” will be featured ... but fewer people may realize that you also were in another great screen musical, “Singin’ in the Rain.” What do you recall of doing that job?

That was a great experience for me because I thought, “Wow, I don’t have to be a little native girl all the time.” I really believed it. I thought, “(Star and co-director) Gene Kelly, what an enlightened man.” He was, as a matter of fact. Why else would he have offered me the role of Zelda Zanders, a non-Latina, nonethnic part? And even though it was small, it was obviously memorable to some people.
