How did you create your character of Elena Santos in “The Watchful Eye”?

It was really important to build a backstor y and really go into the details, even if they weren’t on the page, of why she was here, why she hadn’t left New York, what her relationship with her father was like, what her relationship with her mother (was like), how she sees herself, how she sees the world. And then from there, what’s really great is you start having more questions and so you start answering them and creating that.

And I decided that she was specifically from Jackson Heights, so I spent a little bit of time in Jackson Heights. ... And (in) Jackson Heights, I would just record, I would have my phone and I’d just like record people’s conversations.

Andrew Whitworth of the Los Angeles Rams was last year’s winner. Whitworth was recognized for his fundraising efforts to repair homes in his home state of Louisiana and to help Los Angelenos with housing.
