In Focus “Atlanta” (FX — season premiere, March 24) Nearly four years after the Season 2 finale, this Emmy-winning comedy series finally returns for its third season, which originally was planned to premiere in 2019. Set and filmed almost entirely in Europe, these new episodes follow Earn (series creator and star Donald Glover) and Paper Boi (Brian Tyree Henry), along with Darius and Van (LaKeith Stanfield, Zazie Beetz), on a European tour that is going better than they might have dreamed. Of course, they still have to navigate some new surroundings and process their unexpected success.

‘Welcome to Flatch’ introduces a new Fox comedy’s setting
If you’re looking for a big taste of small-town life, “Welcome to Flatch.” Premiering Thursday, March 17, the Fox sitcom from veteran producers Jenny Bicks (“Sex and the City”) and Paul Feig (“Freaks and Geeks”) is based on the British series “This Country,” taking a documentary approach as – appropriately – a documentary crew showcases the residents of the Midwestern town of Flatch. It’s a quirky group, but still with a particular charm. Cousins Kelly and “Shrub” (played by single-named newcomer Holmes and Sam Straley) provide the crew’s entry point to Flatch, whose citizens also include: the local minister (Seann William Scott) and his newspapereditor ex-girlfriend (Aya Cash, formerly of “You’re the Worst”); and the historical-society chief (Taylor Ortega). Justin Linville and Krystal Smith also play “Flatchians,” as Bicks refers to them. “I think what it allows us to do,” Bicks says, “and what it did in the original, is to get inside the characters’ heads. It gets to be much more on the fly, so everything feels more immediate. When you have actors – as we do – who are great on the fly, you can catch things super-quickly. The comedy flows much more clearly, and that was really exciting for me.” For Feig, “Flatch” is a throwback to his own upbringing in a Detroit
suburb. “I just knew I had to get out of there,” he reflects, “not because I didn’t like it, but because I wanted to do what I’m doing now and try to represent the Midwest. That’s what I did with ‘Freaks and Geeks,’ and what I have been trying to do with everything that I do about underdogs. I really like to try to show the places and the people that don’t normally get shown in movies and TV. That’s why this show is so exciting to me.” Those who want a big dose of “Flatch” early are in luck: The same day the show makes its linear debut on Fox, the first seven episodes will be released on the network’s digital platforms (Fox Now, On Demand, etc.). Cast member Cash believes the series’ pace makes it digestible enough to accommodate such binge viewing of it. “One thing that may not seem obvious about the documentary form,” she reasons, “is simply how quickly it goes. I feel like there’s a real pitch to be made about how you can still come up with really quality content in a really fast amount of time. It was fun to be on something where you (were finished in time so you) could have dinner some nights. I mean, I was alone in my hotel room, because it was (the time of ) COVID. But it was dinner time.”

If the singers, comics, ventriloquists and other more sedate acts of the original “America’s Got Talent” have left some viewers a little jaded by traditional variety performances, this four-week offshoot series probably has kept them entertained with its roster of acts including a parkour aficionado who leaps over oncoming vehicles, a professional human cannonball and a trio of “Jackass” fans who set a colleague on fire and bounce on a trampoline covered in mousetraps. Dwayne Johnson 7 p.m. on (8) Young Rock NBC has released scant information about the sophomore season of this sitcom, which draws freely from actual experiences at different stages of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s life. Given that Season 1 ended on something of a cliffhanger that suggested Johnson wins his (so far fictional) U.S. presidential bid in 2032, it seems likely that storyline will resume in Season 2. Other potential stories may involve Johnson’s time in the Canadian Football League and some of his teenage romances. All the principal actors from Season 1 are expected back. 7 p.m. on HGTV Fixer to Fabulous: Welcome Inn HGTV fan-favorite renovation experts Dave and Jenny Marrs take on a dream project of theirs, transforming an historic 1880s home into a functioning vacation rental, in this new four-episode series. It’s a complete “gut job,” presenting the couple with unprecedented construction challenges and high financial stakes, so they’ll be recruiting fellow renovation experts for their help. In the premiere, the Marrses begin demolition, their first step toward creating a unique bed-andbreakfast holiday property. The discovery of a massive bee infestation soon gives them pause, however. 7:30 p.m. on (8) Mr. Mayor This savvy political comedy from the Emmy-winning “30 Rock” creative team of Tina Fey and Robert Carlock got off to a bumpy start in Season 1, which managed to get only nine episodes on the air due to two production shutdowns forced by the COVID-19 pandemic. Critics mostly liked what they saw of the show, which charts the quixotic administration of Los Angeles Mayor Neil Bremer (Ted Danson). Holly Hunter does inspired supporting work as Bremer’s eccentric vice-mayor, and fans hope this show finally gets to take off in Season 2.

“Rat in the Kitchen” (TBS — series premiere, March 31) Culinary chaos is given free rein in this new cooking competition series hosted by comic Natasha Leggero and celebrity chef Ludo Lefebvre.
