LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

Cecilia Acosta, executive director of the New Mexico Senior Olympics, better known as “Ceci” statewide, is about to kick off the 35th state senior games here in her hometown. She feels proud Roswell is hosting the games July 16-20. “We are ecstatic that we are hosting

2014 SENIOR OLYMPICS

these state games for the second year in a row,” Acosta said. “What makes me even prouder is that the whole community has embraced the games.” “Of course we should not forget the Aging And Long Term Services Department (ALTSD) our main funding source. Sean Davis, director for the local RSVP program, has led the recruitment of volunteers for whom we could not implement the largest event for seniors in the state. We have enlisted well over 450 volunteers. This does not include 20-plus members of my immediate family. My family recognizes how much I love my work and obviously they have been very supportive over the course of the years.” Acosta started her career working and advocating for seniors in the 1980s. She served as a fiscal manager at the Chavez County JOY Center. While working for the JOY Center she volunteered to assist with the Senior Games held at Eastern New Mexico University at Portales, where she earn her degree. “I guess I did a good job because

the board of directors offered me a job as director of the state games,” she said. “I love my job so much that I am still here. We did not have very much money so I starting working out of my house. My kitchen table served as my desk. With the help of then City Manager Ralph Fresques we were able to establish our first office at the 400 block of N. Main St. Currently the offices are located at 1600 S.E. Main St. C. Initially the games were held at college campuses throughout state so that dorms could be used to reduce the cost for seniors. “The number of participants has increase substantially and we can no longer hold the games in small communities,” Acosta said. “This year we are expecting 1,200-plus seniors to participate in our games here in Roswell. Of this number we expect 300-plus seniors to participate in our national games to be held next year in Minneapolis, Minn.” Acosta also oversees health promotion activities statewide year round thanks to ALTSD funding. Health pro-

motion activities include education, senior sports and group exercise activities with the help of certified instructors. They together have expanded classes and have created a family of senior fitness leaders that support health promotion activities that allows seniors to live a healthier life. We are proud of what we have been able to accomplish as a family in the areas of healthy living for seniors in NM. Acosta was recently recognized by the National Senior Games office for her innovative evidence based Health Promotion Enhance Fitness exercise classes for seniors in New Mexico. The presentation was made at the annual National Coordinators conference held in Minneapolis. “We could not have done it without my staff and many other,” Acosta said. In recognition of all the volunteers that will help with the 2014 seniors games, Acosta and the Local Planning Committee will host a social to kick of the games on at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15 at the Roswell County fairgrounds.

Marathon lover finds new love with racewalking 2014 SENIOR OLYMPICS

By Timothy P. Howsare Record Editor

Lenny Kronsinski is a racewalker, a sport many people have a hard time figuring out. You’re walking really fast, but you’re not running. So what’s the difference? “In racewalking there are two very simple rules that make it different from just walking or running,” Kronsinski explained. “One foot has to be on the ground at all times and one knee has to remain straight until the body passes over it. It is more challenging in a sense than running because you have to have a very specific form.” Racewalking has been an Courtesy Photo Lenny Kronsinski on a training walk. Kronsinski was a former distance runner who switched to racewalking after running marathons gave him problems with his knees.

Olympic sport since 1908, Kronsinski said. At the Roswell games, Kronsinski, 74, is entered in two racewalks and plans to participate in the 10K run as a racewalker. Since the 10K starts at 6 a.m. and the racewalk follows immediately at 8, Kronsinski said he may drop out of the second event if he feels tired. A former marathon runner, Kronsinski said he has racewalked for the past 30 years. “I loved marathoning, but marathoning didn’t love my knees,” he said. “I kept getting knee injuries every time I ran a marathon.” A doctor told him his knees were not made for running, which places three times more stress one the body than walking. Then one day at Eisenhower Park in Long Island, NY, Kronsinski saw a bunch of guys racewalking and asked to join them on their walks. They happily obliged.

“It turned out that this group was ran by a Howard Jacobson, who had written a book on racewalking, so I was in good company with that group.”

The Brooklyn, N.Y., native now lives in Albuquerque. “I was raised in Coney Island,” he said with pride.

Kronsinski said he still participates in marathons, but as racewalker instead of a runner.

“My average time is around six hours, but I have to put in a lot of mileage to get a good time,” he said. For his 75th birthday in January, Kronsinski said he has a marathon planned in Mobile, Ala.

Kronsinski said he is the current president of New Mexico Racewalkers, which has a modest 30 “likes” on Facebook, and is a certified to coach racewalking by USA Track and Field.

Just like a kid, 84-year-old loves to sprint and jump

By Timothy P. Howsare Record Editor

Clyde Englebright of Carlsbad has figured out a way to combine his training for the 100-meter dash with his job as a school bus driver. “I park my car 100 yards from the bus in the morning, run to the bus, and then at the end of work run from the bus to my car,” said the 84-year-old. That adds up to two sprints a day, five days a week.

Though he had a triple-bypass surgery in 2006, Englebright said his doctor has approved him to run sprints. He has competed in Senior Olympics for the past 24 years.

Though he has trained for long distances in the past, Englebright said he prefers the shorter events.

This year he has entered the 50and 100-meter runs, the 400- and 800-meter racewalks, the standing long jump and the running long jump.

If that’s not enough to keep him busy, Englebright also is competing in table tennis in the both the singles and doubles competitions. He used to partner in doubles with his wife, but in the past four or five years has partnered with his friend, Jerry Krause.

Originally from Illinois, Englebright has lived in Carlsbad for the past 55 years.

Asked if he’s looking forward to his full schedule of competition, Englebright answered, “You bet!”

Staying fit is a lifelong race By Timothy P. Howsare Record Editor

Larry Johnson of Albuquerque said he got into cycling partly because the temperatures of public pools tend to change as one gets older. Then the 94-year-old admits no one’s been fiddling with the thermostats at the pools; it’s his body’s perception of the water that has changed. “When I was young, all the pools were all too warm, then for 10 to 15 years they were just right and now that I am old they are all too cold,” Johnson said. “When you’re 94 it’s hard to keep warm in a pool. I don’t have enough fat on me.” He ruled out running as a way to stay fit after he tore a ligament in a skiing injury. The retired engineer from Sandia Labs said he does most of his training indoors on a Spinning bike. “My kids don’t want me outside

where I can fall down. It’s hard to fall off a Spinning bike,” he said. “I do good enough riding indoors that I can qualify to race outdoors.” In his younger days, Johnson said he competed in triathlons and has about 25 to his credit. He also competed in the Boston Marathon. “I had to beat four hours to qualify,” he said. “I have done a lot of things but settled on cycling because it’s easier on the bones,” Johnson said. Along with exercise, Johnson said proper diet is important as you get older. “You can’t train on hamburgers or French fries,” he said. “You have to keep exercising, not smoke, eat vegetables and fruits and stay active.” Asked if he trains with others in his age group, Johnson quipped, “I don’t know anybody that’s older than me. I know a couple of women, but they are all in rest homes.”

Her pick is pickleball

By Timothy P. Howsare Record Editor

It has nothing to do with pickles but it does have everything to do with a ball. Most people have probably not heard of Joyce Montoya-Helgensan’s chosen sport, pickleball. “It’s like a smaller version of tennis,” Montoya-Helgensan explained. “There is a net with a court on both sides, but the paddle is similar to a ping pong paddle and the ball has holes in it like a wiffle ball.” She added that the net is the same size as badminton, but is on the ground like in tennis and not in the higher in the air like in badminton. Pickleball is a racket sport in which two to four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite. The game started during the summer of 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Wash., at the home of then State Representative Joel Pritchard. In 1970, Pritchard was

21

elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for the State of Washington. Montoya-Helgensan said when she was tennis player she had a few friends who played pickleball and said, “OK, I need to find out what this is.” She has traveled both in-state and out-of-state to compete. The 53-year-old from Albuquerque has been competing in Senior Olympics since she turned 50. “It gives me a place where I can work hard, compete and feel good about myself,” she said. “I get to compete with people my age and not have to worry about the young ones.” Montoya-Helgensan is competing in several events this year, including horseshoes. “And I do like some of track and field events,” she said. “The beauty of the Senior Olympics is even if you haven’t done events when you were younger they encourage you to do them now.”

COURAGE ATHLETE AWARD

2014 SENIOR OLYMPICS

New Mexico Senior Olympics Inc., announces the 2014 Courage Award recipient as Mrs. EMMA LIPTOW (age 78) from Acoma Pueblo. Ms. Liptow will be recognized at the 2014 Senior Olympics Summer Games Opening Ceremony Wednesday, July 16th at NMMI in Roswell and again at the Board of Directors meeting in December with a luncheon in her honor.

Each year the Courage Award is presented to honor one current Senior Olympian Athlete that competes in spite of his/her medical non-reversible condition. The Courage Award was inspired by the late William Lizut, Senior Olympic swimmer, for his shinning example of courage and was established in 2004 by the New Mexico Senior Olympics Board of Directors. Emma Liptow has been involved in Senior Olympics for seventeen years. At the local level Ms. Liptow serves on the volunteer advisory board to support the senior games with many fundraising events to benefit other senior athletes. After a recent hospital stay Ms. Liptow was seen working at a fundraising activity. She is truly an inspiration to others. Emma participates in the 75-79 age division in Javelin, Shot Put, Bowling, Washers, and Softball throw in spite of her long term battle living with diabetes. Emma competed at the National Senior Games in Palo Alto, CA and wasn’t able to bring home a medal but the experience at Nationals energized her to continue to support the Senior Olympic spirit and encourages others that they too can participate in Senior Olympics Games. She recommends everyone should attend National Senior Games. From the staff and Board of Directors, congratulations to Emma Liptow for your true inspiration. To nominate a current Senior Olympic athlete for this award contact your local senior program coordinator or NMSO at toll free 1888-623-6676.
