Realtor of the Year

James Dodson, one of her RE/MAX colleagues, states, “The Realtor of the Year is the greatest honor bestowed on a realtor. It represents the appreciation by the Association for dedication and commitment accomplished over years of work. Production, community service and participation within the Association itself are all requirements. In addition, the award recognizes the integrity of the individual within the community and professionalism as a realtor.”

Shirley Childress

One of the Roswell Association of Realtors’ most prestigious awards is that of Realtor of the Year. The newest recipient of this honor is Shirley Childress, an associate broker with RE/MAX of Roswell.

R E

S

Childress is a longtime area resident, having lived in Roswell for over 30 years. Born and raised in New Mexico, she has first-hand knowledge of what makes this state so unique and special. She truly understands the importance, responsibility and pride of property ownership here in the Land of Enchantment. During her career at RE/MAX of Roswell, she has amassed a truly impressive series of professional accolades that reflect an ongoing track

record of excellence. She has been a top producer since 2003, a 5-time member of the RE/MAX Executive Club, and was also named to the RE/MAX President’s Club in 2005.

Dan Coleman, of Prudential Enchanted Lands, Realtors, notes that the Realtor of the Year award is a very special one. “The recipient of this award is an example of everything a realtor should be. This is a merit-based award bestowed by one’s peers. In the case of Shirley Childress, it couldn’t have gone to a more deserving individual.” Starla Nunez, an associate broker with Century 21 Home Planning, adds that Childress is “an absolutely amazing realtor. She is thoroughly professional.” Prior to entering the realty trade, Childress had worked in Washington, DC for the late Congressman Harold L. Runnels (D-NM), and had also been employed at Zink’s World Discovery Travel in Roswell. Like many other real-

tors, she is active with a variety of local organizations. “Realtors are on the front line of community promotion,” she observes, adding that her greatest passion and inspiration has been the 24 years she spent serving on the board of the Roswell Symphony Orchestra, in addition to a decade of involvement with the Roswell Symphony Orchestra Foundation. In addition to her longterm commitment to the arts, she has served on the Roswell Educational Achievement Foundation, as well as the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission. The National Association of Realtors’ website states, “The term REALTOR® has come to connote competency, fairness, and high integrity resulting from adherence to a lofty ideal of moral conduct in business relations.” By being honored with this distinguished presentation, Shirley Childress, as Realtor of the Year, has been deemed by her own colleagues within the realty industry to have lived out this promise of excellence in her chosen profession.

ker with Prudential Enchanted Lands, Realtors, says, “I feel that I was born to work in real estate.” The Roswell Association of Realtors concurs, having selected her as their Rookie of the Year in recognition of her effort, sales and productivity during 2013. She says, “I consider this award a major compliment. I’m very proud.”

Lori Berry

One very important annual recognition given by the Roswell Association of Realtors is the Rookie of the Year award. As the name implies, this distinction signifies excellence among newcomers to the real estate field. Lori Berry, an associate real estate bro-

4

Following a career with the United States Postal Service that spanned nearly 29 years, Berry turned her sights toward real estate. During her postal career, she was a city carrier in Roswell, later advancing to supervisor and then postmaster, working in Artesia, Carlsbad and Hagerman. She says, “I worked in many offices in New Mexico as Officer In Charge, including Roswell, Alamogordo, Ruidoso and Placitas. During these years, I bought and sold many homes. I loved the whole concept. When the Postal Service offered an early retirement to postmasters who had at least 25 or more service years, I decided it was time for me to move on. I attended Kaplan Schools in Albuquerque at night during my last few months with the Postal Service, and received my

license shortly after retiring on Sept 30, 2012.” She began actively selling real estate in 2013 and joined Prudential Enchanted Lands, Realtors.

She says of her fellow realtors, “Everyone has been so helpful. Before my first contract, I roamed the halls asking if I could help any of the other realtors - filing, making calls, anything to learn. All of the Roswell realtors assisted me during my learning period. Never was a question not answered in a professional and friendly way. The title company personnel were always patient with me, and explained every detail of all my closings so that I had zero questions and felt confident that my customers and clients were taken care of. The Roswell Realtors’ Association has also been wonderful in Continuing Education, as it is so important in this day and age of mortgage rules and regulations.” Says Dan Coleman, one of her colleagues at Prudential Enchanted Lands, “Lori is a very outgoing person. She’s never met a stranger. Her positive attitude draws people to her, and has made

2014 AMERICAN HOME WEEK

her the success that she is.”

James Dodson, of RE/MAX of Roswell, says, “It’s a great honor to receive the Rookie of the Year award. It is based on sales for the rookie year, community service, and participation within the Roswell Association, such as volunteer work on committees. Lori Berry, the award winner this year, met all requirements with flying colors.”

Berry says, “It’s not impossible to sell your property on your own without a realtor, but I wouldn’t recommend it. I think people would be amazed at what we can do for them.” One of the most important things realtors can accomplish for their clients is to successfully navigate them through the complex processes of real estate transactions. The final outcome of those processes property ownership - can be extremely rewarding and satisfying for realtors and clients alike. As Lori Berry says, “There is nothing like the look on client’s faces when I get to hand them their keys to their new home or business.”

Citizen of the Year

Dale Rogers, are co-owners of Roswell Livestock and Farm Supply on East 2nd Street. They are both highly active in the community.

Mrs. Rogers serves on the Assurance Home Board of Directors and the Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell Foundation, in addition to having been supportive of the Roswell Symphony Orchestra, the Future Farmers of America, 4-H, local sports, rodeo events and our local museums.

Kay Rogers

Shannon Seyler Special to The Record

Kay Rogers, the Roswell Association of Realtors’ 2014 Citizen of the Year, embodies the spirit of community involvement. She and her husband,

She has been a Roswell resident since 1972. In addition to owning the Farm Supply, the Rogers family operates the Lincoln County Mercantile in Capitan. They were designated the 2007 Ranch Family of the Year by the New Mexico Championship Ranch Rodeo, and have twice been recipients of the Chamber of Commerce Business Showcase award. Says Levena Dean from Ranchline Taylor & Taylor Realtors, who nominated Rogers for this award, “Kay is just the most delightful individual you’ll ever meet. She is kind and generous, and a great all-around person. She’s done so much for the community, and is truly an

asset to Roswell.” One honor Rogers remembers with special fondness was when she and her husband were named Grand Marshalls of the Eastern New Mexico State Fair. “It was so much fun,” she recalls. “I especially enjoyed it when they brought out the Wells Fargo stagecoach. Like so many things in this area, it was just a wonderful experience. Roswell is a great place to be, whether for business, fun or community activities. There are so many ways to get involved in this city, and there’s always something to do. I love it here.” Regarding the Citizen of the Year award, she says, “It’s such a high honor, and I’m very thankful.” But she stresses that community involvement is never a solitary pursuit. “If I’m recognized as a good citizen in any way, it’s a direct result of being surrounded by a whole town full of good citizens. It’s never about just one person. You simply can’t be a good citizen all by yourself. It always comes down to community, teamwork and networking. It’s about people doing things together and working in mutual cooperation.”

Shirley Childress, an associate broker with RE/MAX of Roswell, says, “Kay Rogers is just a fantastic person. She has been highly giving and supportive to many different people and programs within the community.”

Another RE/MAX of Roswell realtor, James Dodson, notes, “This is the only award that realtors give outside our organization, and it is to honor an individual for their contributions to the community. Kay Rogers of Roswell Livestock and Farm Supply has been an active community volunteer for many years, and is greatly deserving of this award.” The Roswell Association of Realtors, in granting this award, continues to demonstrate a commitment to building strong communities, not only through the sale of quality properties, but by recognizing community service. With that in mind, they’re glad to publicly reward the achievements of those outside of their own profession, such as Kay Rogers, who have actively done their part to make Roswell a better place to live.

Buying A Home Can Be A Challenging Process

Shannon Seyler Special to The Record

“Buying a home can sometimes be a challenging process, but there’s a reason homeownership is called the American Dream,” says Steve Brown, president of the National Association of REALTORS®. He adds, on the organization’s website, “Homeownership is also one of the best ways for individuals and families to build financial security over the long-term.” Members of the Roswell Association of Realtors would certainly agree. They are members of the National Association of Realtors, in addition to their state and local affiliations. It’s a three-way alliance — national, statewide and local — that adds up to professional, ethical and financial benefits for both real estate professionals and their clients alike. Although frequently used as a generic term for anyone involved with real estate transactions, in the U.S., the words

407 SUNRISE

HOMESITES:

“realtor” and “realtors” are legally registered as collective trade marks of the National Association of REALTORS®, and are often rendered in capital letters followed by a registered trademark symbol. Either of these terms implies that the professionals using them are, in fact, members of the National Association. As Dan Coleman of the Roswell Association of Realtors explains, “Every realtor is a licensed real estate agent, but not every real estate agent is a realtor.” A realtor, by legal definition, belongs to the National Association of Realtors. Across the nation, the real estate profession is gearing up for American Home Week, which highlights both the realty trade and the merits of property ownership. The National Association of Realtors, once actively involved with the event, is no longer associated with it in an official capacity. Still, many realtors nationwide hold events related to American Home Week. Here in Roswell, it’s slated to run from April 27 to May 3.

As part of American Home Week, the Roswell Association of Realtors will be honoring their top producers — those individuals who have sold over a million dollars’ worth of property. This year, the Association boasts over 40 top producers. Additionally, the group will be honoring three very special individuals: the Rookie of the Year, the Realtor of the Year, and the Citizen of the Year. While the first two awards recognize excellence within the realty profession, the recipient of the Citizen of the Year award is a non-realtor who has displayed an outstanding commitment to community enrichment.

Community involvement is highly important to realtors. Says Dan Coleman, “The Roswell Association of Realtors gives back to the community. Our clients become part of the community, and as such, they’re supported all the way by realtors. And remember, we’re part of the community, too. As realtors, we’ve been active with the

United Way, Habitat for Humanity, antidrug campaigns for youth and more.” A realtor’s obligation to the community doesn’t end the moment the ink dries on the paperwork following a property sale. The preamble to the National Association of Realtors’ Code of Ethics notes that “REALTORS® should recognize that the interests of the nation and its citizens require the highest and best use of the land and the widest distribution of land ownership. They require the creation of adequate housing, the building of functioning cities, the development of productive industries and farms, and the preservation of a healthful environment. Such interests impose obligations beyond those of ordinary commerce.” American Home Week is a time for celebrating home ownership, acknowledging the achievements of realtors, and honoring citizens whose involvement in community affairs are setting new standards in both personal and civic excellence.
