The crash that echoed around the world The 70th anniversary of the UFO crash draws national and international attention to Roswell By Christina Stock Vision Editor

o you believe aliens crashed in 1947 outside of Roswell? That is the big question scientists and researchers ask while the U.S. government has been denying the incident ever since. The festival celebrating the mystery has been growing over the years, inviting serious scientists and researchers to share their opinions and knowledge at the International UFO Museum and Research Center. Last year, the Roswell Daily Record joined in with its event, the Roswell Incident, focusing on the journalistic aspects. The Daily Record broke the story on the front page of its edition on July 8, 1947. A different group joining the research aspects is challenging the idea of aliens. The Challenges to ET Conferences at the Roswell Mall has speakers who present different points of view pertaining to UFOs, including alternative

theories of UFO origins and religious aspects. Let us take a step into the past, into the mentality and trustworthiness of those involved in the crash, which is now known as the Roswell incident. Locals usually wouldn’t flinch or wonder if they saw an unidentified flying object zooming over the vast high desert surrounding Roswell in 1947. After all, Roswell city folks and ranchers were used to rockets and strange experimental airplanes ever since Charles Lindbergh advised rocket scientist Robert H. Goddard in 1930 to move to the sleepy town. Without Goddard’s experiments, there wo uld h ave be e n no flight to the moon, making Roswell “the cradle of America’s space exploration.” If you want to know more about Goddard, visit the Roswell Museum and Art Center. Goddard Planetarium is going to have out-ofthis-world laser shows throughout the festival. The museum itself has recreated the shop of Goddard with his original tools and rocket displays. The wide-open space, favorable weather conditions and remoteness of Southeast New Mexico was — and still is — ideal for aircraft training and experiments. The U.S. military moved in to build the Roswell Army Airfield and a base in 1941. When its military experiments went haywire, only cacti and startled livestock were disturbed. The airfield turned to one of the most elite U.S. Air Fields whose crews were trained on the Boeing B-29 Superfortress. The crew responsible was the 509th Bombardment group. They were responsible for testing and delivering the atomic bomb. Only the 509th group was trained for this.

“Alien” visitors at the UFO Festival. As in any small town with an airbase, civilians were working on base, military members were out in the town frequently visiting the clubs and restaurants and forming friendships with the locals, some resulting in marriages. Crashes of those military aircrafts and experiments were a common occurence and there was a protocol in place. Cowboys and ranchers who found debris that could be from an aircraft experiment alerted the local sheriff’s office, who in turn alerted the airbase. Everybody went out to check and recover any debris that belonged to the airfield. When the Roswell Daily Record reported the UFO crash, there was no doubt that something different had happened, after all, the information came from RAAF, under the official authority of its intelligence officer, Maj. J.A. Marcel. The military, police department and locals knew what a crashed military experiment looked like compared to what was found early July 1947. However, govern-

ment denial followed, including press releases featuring inconsistent explanations. Is the truth out there? The public will have a wide variety of discussions, panels and speakers to choose from and can come to its own conclusion. Adding to the serious aspects of the UFO Festival, Roswell also added a large variety of entertainment for the entire family. A part of downtown Main Street will be closed off for the festival. There will be booths with vendors, family activities and even water slides to cool off. The Alien Pet Costume Contest and live entertainment happens at the Chaves County Courthouse. The 21st annual Alien Chase, a 5K and 10K run and walk, starts July 1 at 7 a.m. at the Roswell Convention & Civic Center. To sign up or for more information, visit active.com. The organization tent on the courthouse lawn has the official passport for visitors. With this passport, festival attendees visit local merchants

to receive stamps and return to the tent with all stamps to get a bag of 2017 UFO Festival goodies and collectibles. The popular Alien Costume Contest for humanoids takes place at the Roswell Convention & Civic Center. An annual favorite is the UFO Light Parade on Saturday evening. There is no entry fee and all aliens and pets from the costume contest can join and ride on the special float. North of town, at the Roswell Mall, the Galacticon & Sci Fi Film Fest invites the public to the world of cosplay, steampunk, comics and science fiction. There will be workshops, panels and the Cosplay Crawl, where cosplayers and steampunkers show off their costumes. The SciFi Film Fest shows international and national short and feature films at Galaxy 8 movie theater, which includes an award ceremony as the highlight. Chase Kloetzke, who has been employed with the U.S. Department of Defense. She leads the special assignment team of experienced and specialized investigations in the Mutual UFO Network. In a phone interview with the Vision Magazine, Kloetzke shares her background and origin of her interest in UFOs. “I read a book as a teenager by Erich von Däniken, titled ‘Chariot of the Gods,’” Kloetzke said. “I was immediately hooked on the mystery. It gave me permission to push the status quo, or ask questions out of the box.” “One of the strangest researches I did was a coal mine in Kentucky. I was called by the owners. The miners had sightings of what they called ‘lizard man.’ “After exhausting all of the other options, they called in a UFO/paranormal investigator,” Kloetzke said. While Kloetzke could not find evidence, she did give the mining operators the advice to close that part of the mine for a week. If the sightings continued, she would return with a full team. “I never got that call,” Kloetzke said. The International UFO Museum and Research Center is having top scientists and researchers as speakers for the 70th anniversary of the alleged UFO crash By Christina Stock Vision Editor

or the 22nd International UFO Festival, a who’s who of scientists and speakers are arriving — ready to share their research about mysterious events, aliens and of course, the alleged UFO crash of 1947 — at the International UFO Museum and Research Center. There would be no UFO Festival without the two famous researchers, Stanton Friedman and Donald Schmitt, who are going to be available for questions during the event at the museum. Both will speak about their experiences and also have a booth at the museum. Additionally, Jesse Marcel III, the grandson of Jesse Marcel, will have a lecture. His grandfather was the information officer at the Roswell Army Airfield in 1947. Another speaker interviewed is Peter Robbins. He had an encounter with UFOs at a young age. In separate phone interviews, Friedman and

Schmitt talked about their experiences. Friedman didn’t start out being interested in UFOs, or to become a lecturer. “When I was getting my degrees from the University of Chicago, I was just looking for a job. I worked my way through five years of college. It was time to make some money,” Friedman said and laughed. “I had a varied background. I was a union waiter at a restaurant in Chicago for three years. I was busboy in the Catskill Mountains through summers. I learned a lot about food, not about physics that way. “I didn’t expect to become a ufologist or Roswell researcher,” nuclear physicist Friedman said. “Somebody heard me on a radio program and asked, ‘How about lecturing to our group?’ “I started lecturing and one thing led to another,” he said. “I was lecturing at the Louisiana State Uni-

versity in Baton Rouge in 1978, and they brought me to the big TV station in town to do three interviews. I did the first two but the third reporter was nowhere to be found. This is before they had cellphones. The station manager is giving me coffee, looking at his watch. Out of the blue he says, ‘You know, the guy you ought to talk to is Jesse Marcel.’ Brilliant investigator that I am, I said, ‘Who is he?’ I didn’t know about Jesse Marcel. His next sentence changed my life. He said, ‘He knows about one of those saucers when he was in the military.’ He wasn’t joking.” After his interview and lecture, Friedman decided to get in contact with Marcel. “It turned out, Jesse hadn’t told anything (about the UFO incident in Roswell),” Friedman said. “So, he told me his story. He was the intelligence officer for the 509th. He got a call from the sheriff’s office that

a rancher came in with some pieces of strange wreckage. And there was an agreement between the sheriff’s office and the base — this is the 509th — the most elite military group in the world. I say that because they dropped the first two atom bombs and then two more a couple of years later. Nobody else in the world had atom bombs, but they did. They were high security special people. The sheriff called Jesse and Jesse checked out the wreckage, and the story goes on from there,” Friedman said. “That’s how I got started. Sometimes you get lucky, that’s all I can say.” Friedman contacted the Roswell Daily Record and asked to speak with the editor and publisher from 1947, but they were not available. “After talking to Jesse, Bill Moore and I went out to find people connected to the crash,” Friedman said. “I didn’t even know that the base had been closed when I called. The base publication officer, a guy called Walter Haut … and before I could finish the sentence, the newspaper gal on the phone said, ‘Oh, his wife works here.’ Totally unexpected. Walter, turns out had been at the base as public information officer and also World War II bombardier who went on

20 missions overseas. He and his wife liked Roswell, so they settled and raised their family there. He was a great help to me. “Walter was quite a guy. He was also a darn good bombardier when tests were done on Operation Crossroads (the military cover name of the nuclear tests). Walter was chosen to drop the instrument package for the nuclear test. Without the instruments, it’s a wasted test. They didn’t have atomic bombs to waste at that time. That is a sign of the respect of which he was held,” Friedman said. As of today, Friedman

has lectured in 19 countries, 10 provinces and all 50 states. Asked about the changes in UFO research, Donald Schmitt said in a phone interview, “We have had six archeological digs at the crash sight, more accurately the debris field sight. We are able to go in with more and more sophisticated equipment, such as ground permeating radar and even determining the biological nature of the soil of the terrain itself. That these are aftereffects that a balloon could never have established. “We continue to look for physical evidence, continue to look for a piece of hardware, a fragment, something that could be demonstrated within a laboratory to be off the planet,” Schmitt said. “We take advantage of the new technology in such analysis. We are still very optimistic, very positive that we will find something. Whether through the scientific search, such as the archeological work or a witness, a family member finally stepping forward to say, ‘I found this in the attic, I found this in the basement. And it was in my father’s, grandfather’s old Army lockbox. That is the wonderful thing about Roswell.

“When we started our own investigation into the events of 1947, I was a sceptic,” Schmitt said. “I thought that we make a single trip down to New Mexico and wrap this up in a weekend. “Presently, we are up to 600 witnesses that we have interviewed, either directly or indirectly involved. We traveled all over the world and observed that Roswell truly has become a household name. “We still remain very committed in solving this now 70-year-old mystery. “All the other UFO cases involve eyewitness testimony and nothing more. All which can be faked. Regarding Roswell, if we find a piece from the original incident and it indeed proves to be something of a non-earthly origin, we’ll have the biggest story of the millenium. In Roswell, we can say that we are actually searching for

the holy grail. “I have another book coming out called, ‘Cover-up at Roswell,’ with the focus on exactly what the government did to the witnesses, even more alarming, the press; That the First Amendment rights from the media were totally shut down. They were threatened with the loss of their licenses, they had the offices ransacked. Everything contrary to the balloon explanation was confiscated. Wire recordings of the witnesses were confiscated. People were abducted to silence them. It was a sad day in the history of this country in that all of the rights were thrown asunder, and we were led to believe it was merely over the recovery of a weather balloon. In a phone interview, Jesse Marcel III shared his memories about his grandfather and what he heard firsthand from the man who had seen the alleged UFO after it crashed and as information officer of the Roswell Army Airfield, had contacted the Roswell Daily Record with the press release. “I can’t really pinpoint the exact time when I started listening to it (his grandfather’s stories about the alleged UFO crash outside of Roswell) and learned about it,” Marcel said. “We were all sitting around the table

father was an avid fisherman. We would always go fishing by his house in the bayou. We talked about Roswell and a lot of things. He’d always turn around and wink at me and say, ‘There is so much more, but I can’t tell you,’” Marcel said. “A lot of people don’t understand who my grandfather was,” Marcel said. “They think he was made as a scapegoat for Roswell. People don’t realize that it was a badge of honor for him. He felt that this was something that will change history forever. I remember him literally weeping on the couch about World War II and his involvement about the atomic bomb. The people who lost their lives, that’s the thing that got to the guy, not Roswell. Roswell is a positive thing. Peter Robbins has history with Roswell for the past 10 years. “Roswell is a very special corner of America and the world,” Robbins said in a phone interview. “I have a great fondness, and I am lucky enough to have some history with Roswell and many friends there. I am UFO Festival Speakers: Donald Burleson Donald Burleson is a professional mathematician and widely published author. He serves as the New Mexico state director for the Mutual UFO Network. He was also a consultant at the late Lloyd Pye’s Starchild Skull DNA recovery project. Burleson is the author of 24 books. He is on the editorial board of the journal, “The American Rationalist,” and has been writing his UFO-related newspaper column, Looking Up, in the Roswell Daily Record’s Vision Magazine since 1999. Burleson and his wife Mollie have lived in Roswell since 1996. Thomas Carey Thomas Carey holds degrees from Temple University and received his master’s in anthropology from the California State University, Sacramento. Robbins had repressed a traumatic encounter with a UFO when he was 14 years old. “One particular late morning in June (Robbins was 14 years old), my sister Helen and I were just playing around in the front yard, as kids do. It was a beautiful day as they say, not a cloud in the sky. “ He saw five UFOs flying in formation. His sister observed Robbins being struck by a beam and going down, hitting the sidewalk. Helen herself was transported slowly up into one of the UFOs where she had to endure medical tests, which she told to her brother at a much later time. Her brother blanked out, either from the beam or from the shock. When he came to, his sister was back in her room. Robbins went on to have a career in the arts in New York City, when in 1975 something triggered his sity of Chicago in 1955 and 1956. He was employed for 14 years as a nuclear physicist by such companies as GE, GM, Westinghouse Astronuclear Laboratory, TRW Systems, Aerojet General Nucleonics and McDonnell-Douglas Astronautics working in programs as nuclear aircraft, fission and fusion rockets and various compact nuclear power plants for space and terrestrial applications. He has published more than 100 UFO papers and has appeared on hundreds of radio and TV programs and many documentaries. He has spoken at more MUFON Symposia than anyone else. Even the stars could not be brighter A laser show extravaganza awaits the public at the Robert H. Goddard Planetarium By Christina Stock Vision Editor he UFO Festival laser shows are held in the Robert H. Goddard Planetarium located on the north side of the Roswell Museum and Art Center at 100 W. 11th St. The public can enter and exit through the museum to access the planetarium until the museum closes at 5 p.m. The planetarium will be open during the festival from 11 a.m. through the last laser show each day. The organizers suggest to arrive early for best seating. Tickets can be purchased only at the planetarium, starting June 29. Cost for tickets are $5 for adults, children ages 4-10 years get in for $3 and children under the ages of 3 get in for free. There was a switch in ownership of the company that produces the laser show and it is a change for the better, according to planetarium coordinator Jeremy Howe. “We had just a few shows last year and had to send some people away because the seats were completely filled,” Howe said. “This way we are offering 13 different shows. It will be the same price, but fewer audience

members, which will help with the ticketing. “Not only that, but for Friday night and Saturday night, we will be offering a 9 p.m. show for the night owls.” The names of the laser shows are Electropop, Tribute, X, Vinyl, Genesis, U2, Zeppelin, Country, Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon, Hypnotica, Metallica, Floyd: The Wall, Retro, Electrolaze, Beatles, Rock and Laseropolis. Each show transports the audience into a different time and space, from modern pop music such as Lady Gaga and Daft Punk to classic’s from the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s. All the audience has to do is sit back in the air-conditioned planetarium and let the amazing laser show do the work, one song at a time. A controversial UFO conference The Challenges to ET Conference puts a different angle to aliens and abduction stories

By Christina Stock Vision Editor t the Challenges to ET Conference that takes place at the Roswell Mall, a different group of experts and truth seekers are going to talk about their research that may surprise avid believers in the alleged UFO crash outside of Roswell in 1947. While all speakers at the Challenges to ET Conference certainly agree that there is a wide range of actual unidentified phenomena to be studied, they feel that genuine extraterrestrial life forms is the least likely explanation for the reported phenomena. These experts come to the conclusion that there is no single explanation — alien or earthly — that explains all of the documented reports. The conference intends to give a fair hearing to many lesser-known views, which do, in fact, offer sometimes strong documentation to argue for their validity. Michael Heiser is one of the speakers who was available for a phone interview. Asked how he got into the field of ufology, he said, “I had a casual interest in UFO things since I was a kid. It really changed for me during the 50th anniversary of the Roswell incident — which I don’t think has to do with aliens, personally. I listened to the CNN press conference during the 50th anniversary. There were some things there that were absurd for me. I had read enough about the case that things just struck me as odd. That sort of took me from a casual interest into more seriousness.” Heiser took a year off from his biblical studies and wrote a novel combining his knowledge

of UFOs with ancient text and biblical languages. He appeared on radio shows sharing his research before finishing his studies. Heiser was frustrated in people who did not care about primary sources and false translations. “I can’t understand the motives, it’s either ignorance or laziness or people just wanting to make stuff up I can’t really tell and it is not my job to accuse anybody or know that, he said. “People making outlandish claims about ancient material with the knowledge that nobody is really going to check up on it, nobody is going back to the primary sources, but I do,” Heiser said. “I just don’t like people being taught badly or poorly about this sort of material. “In a bigger sense, I think the subject matter is important. The whole question, could there be extraterrestrials? I think it is an important question. Who are we? How did we get here? Questions about God. So I think it is important, but the ancient astronaut textual stuff is pretty much all nonsense,” Heiser said. “I would encourage people to turn out for the talks, the lectures, the sections. I would encourage them to think about this sort of thing, but again, be honest about it. Go back to primary sources, don’t take people’s word for granted. They need to be more careful and evaluate what they hear. “It is a real problem in this world of fake and real news,” Heiser said. In a phone interview, Nick Redfern talked about how he got interested in ufology. “A lot of people get into the subject because they have their own sort of life-changing encounter. I actually never had that, rather ironically,” Redfern said and laughed. “How and why I got involved in UFOs is because my father was in the British Royal Air Force. He was a radar mechanic; his name is Frank Redfern. In the 1950s, in the height of the Cold War, he was involved in several UFO incidents in the military base he was stationed at, which was called RAF Meatishead, which was on the east coast of England and is closed down. “The incidents he was involved in revolved around these strange objects, the UFOs, approaching the English coastline from Skandinavia, so we are talking Norway, Denmark and Sweden. Their first thought was that it must be the Russians launching either an attack or just trying to penetrate their defenses and see how prepared or not prepared they were. “When the pilots, who were sent up to intercept these things, saw them, they described them as classic flying saucers. This went on through the course of three nights. After those three nights everybody was told, ‘You won’t talk about this. You are in the military and what’s in the military, stays in the military.’ “My dad didn’t tell anybody until I was 11 or 12 years old. That’s really what got me interested. Not just because it was my own father but because he was trained on radar in the military. “When I finished school, I began working on an entertainment magazine back in England called Zero. That got me into the field of journalism. I thought, why not try and combine my background in the magazine and the newspaper work with things

Workshops include themes such as lighting costumes for cosplayers 101, belly dancing and up-cycling: costuming for the thrifty, to mention just a few.

Miko Hughes from the “Roswell” TV series Hughes started his acting career in a public service announcement when he was 22 months old and followed that up by appearing in his first feature film at 27 months old. Since that early start, Hughes has consistently been one of the busiest young actors in Hollywood. has grown tremendously to where Power Rangers is liked by everyone and everybody knows my character now. They see my character through Netflix and they still show Power Rangers on TV. With the new movie coming out, it will make a big impact on the franchise because it makes us relevant again. “We have been in talks to bring my character back, because my character has never been brought back to the show as a cameo appearance,” Foster said. “I have been in constant communication. I would love to revive the role. Keep in mind that my character was a kid. Nowadays, the fans would be able to see a grown-up Justin, which would be pretty cool.” The Galacticon also features the established Sci-fi Film Fest with feature and short films in the sci-fi genre, shown in the Galaxy 8 movie theater, which is also located at the mall. Asked about the trend in the admitted movies, organizer Alan Trever said, “We had a really good mixture of both, sci-fi and fantasy. Altogether, we got 42 films and those films are from all over the world. Lots from England, New Zealand and Australia, a couple from Canada, we had one from Alaska, and the rest were mostly U.S. “Out of the 42, we narrowed it down

to 14 movies that will be shown on Friday and Saturday, Trever said. “Those are shorts and feature films.” Several of the directors, actors and crew are planning to attend the screening and award ceremony. “The filmmakers present will have time for question and answers,” Trever said. “Everything is blocked in with four to five blocks a day, with groupings of films and breaks in between each block for filmmakers to answer questions from the audience. “This film fest is sponsored by the media arts program at the college (Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell, media arts department),” Trever said. “The students that are in the film program are the ones that are organizing the program. Twenty-five students were in the film program. This summer, we got 10 finishing filmmakers. Most of the other ones graduated in spring.” Film industry notables will present panels and instruction with attendees. Tina Presley-Barek of Presley Talent Agency will be covering a panel about how to get started in films. John Henry of the IATSE Local 480 Film Technicians Union and president of New Mexico Federation of Labor will talk about working in the film industry. Mike Lanfor, of AirPlay Media and Adventur Services will give an aerial drone presentation for indie filmmakers and talk about legality and camera systems. The Roswell-based company

specializes in small unmanned aerial systems, also known as drones. Galacticon has a large steampunk presence and will feature the Steampunk Ball at Peppers Grill and Bar on Saturday evening. Guests don’t need to be dressed as cosplayers or steampunks to enter, but it is highly encouraged. Entertainment will be provided by one of the premier steampunk bands, the Marquis of Vaudeville (details about the band is listed under “Music” in this Vision edition). The Roswell UFO Festival Costume Contest at the Roswell Convention & Civic Center will combine with the Galacticon cosplay organizers to create a huge event on July 1 with no entry fee and a chance to win in numerous categories from amateurs to professionals. The band members are Geneva Arena, Noah Falls, Bryan Geddie and Toby Lawhon. Asked how the band became known in the steampunk community, Lawhon said, “We started writing what appealed to us. We wanted to convey our own emotions, we wanted to convey our thoughts. We started writing in a specific style that I feel lends itself to the steampunk scene. We have a lot of songs that have that old world feel to it, some of the instrumentation, the orchestration we put in our songs. It kind of gives the songs an old world feel but at the same time, we are a modern rock band,” Lawhon said. “That is what steampunk is, fusing the histo-

ry of the old world with modern and futuristic themes. I think that’s what drew people to our music in the steampunk scene. Bryan and I were familiar with steampunk from our role-playing days, when we played Dungeons and Dragons,” Lawhon said. “We didn’t necessarily set out to be a band in the steampunk scene, but we became a band in the steampunk scene because of the songs we were writing fit perfectly with that scene.” Arena is one of the newest members. “I was in another band that played with the Marquis of Vaudeville and I loved them from the moment I heard their music,” she said. “Then, a few years later, I ended up being in the band. “I was not really in the steampunk before the Marquis of Vaudeville,”

The band has a new album coming out in October, “Tragic Valentine.” “We are going to play a lot of songs off of the new album, in fact there is a song that we have written for one of our friends that is in the steampunk community,” Lawhon said. “We are going to perform that live for the very first time. Have you heard of SciFiRom? A new literature sub-genre takes off in science fiction By Christina Stock Vision Editor

hile teenagers and adults went wild for the books about sparkly vampires, hairy wolves and other shapeshifters, a new style of literature has found a fan base among the huge community of avid readers around the world. The sub-genre is science-fiction romance, in short, SciFiRom. Over the last several years, more and more fans found their way to the books that were harder to find than the proverbial needle in a haystack. The few good authors specializing in

SciFiRom were haphazardly categorized by the media into science fiction, others in fantasy or the broad category of romance. Readers had to hunt for new authors that were not easily found on the large websites specializing in book sales for ebooks or hardcopies. This has changed in the last year. While those websites still do not list the subcategory of SciFiRom, the search engines have been updated and will list the books that are a hybrid of romance and science fiction.

The authors and fans are meeting now all over the world at specialized cons and — typical for the times — they are avid social media users. These authors bond ed, became friends and started to work together in Facebook groups where they are highly interactive with their fans. Just as in any other genre, there are big differences between the authors, depending on interests, such as hard science fiction, dystopian, steampunk, contemporary and fantasy. One of the first of

those pioneers in SciFiRom is Susan Grant. The New York Times best-selling and RITA award-winning author could easily be a heroine in one of her own books. Grant is a former U.S. Air Force pilot who had fought her way into the Air Force at a time when no females were permitted. Today she is a commercial jumbo-jet pilot with more than 18,000 hours of flight time under her belt. Grant’s first book, “Contact,” is about a commercial pilot whose 747 jet is snatched from the sky by a UFO. “Contact” was published in 1999. Grant’s female heroes are no damsels in distress. They are (of course) airline pilots, Air Force fighter pilots or other strong women working in a male-dominated field. When they encounter the hero and

love-to-be, equals meet to save planets, worlds and societies. In a recent interview by Emerian Rich of Search Magazine, Grant had sage advice for anybody who faces adversity. “Learn to let a lot of things roll off,” she said. “Stand up for yourself when you need to, but know you’re going to be viewed as a female first, because you are. Try not to let someone’s attitude make you give up your dreams. Be strong. That goes for men, women and people of all skin colors and orientations. There will always be those who try to throw up a tall wall in front of you or slam the door in your face. You can give up, or you can wedge a hand or foot in that door, dust yourself off and try again. I have a saying, ‘Don’t listen to the naysayers and don’t take

hile residents of San Patricio and the Hondo Valley were celebrating St. John’s Day on June 24, 1947, pilot Kenneth Arnold witnessed several discshaped crafts fly over Mt. Rainer in Washington. From this incident, the term “flying saucer” was born, and more sightings of the discs occurred all across the U.S. — including Roswell, where Dan Wilmot saw one on July 2. Just days later, future astronaut Edgar D. Mitchell (then attending his senior year of high school in Artesia) remembers seeing the Roswell Daily Record issue reporting the UFO crash on July 7. Apart from a brief week of UFO mania in July, what else of note went on relating to Roswell in 1947? Quite a bit in fact. Though the No. 1 song on Billboard’s Top 10 at the time was “Chi Baba, Chi Baba” by Perry Como, at No. 7 on Your Hit Parade was a song by a Roswell band,

It was one of those days that stands out in your memory, not so much for the aliens — though we did see a few — but because of a broken car A/C in the middle of summer and a desperate need to be cool. “Yes, I did say we saw aliens,” Smith said and laughed. “It would be impossible not to go through Roswell and miss them, after all, Roswell is famous for their alien encounters. Whether aliens have visited Roswell or not, I do believe there is a possibility that we may have been visited on some level. I can only hope that the incident in 1947 was real. I know that thousands of amateur astronomers are searching the galaxy for evidence. In the end, I’m just glad I can say that I experienced Roswell in person.” “Now, as a Florida girl, I’m used to heat, but not that kind. I’m used to walking through walls of water, this heat was a suck-you-dry-leave-you-mummifiedboiling-sun type of heat that none of us were used to. By the time we walked back, all I could dream about was getting back to the car and collapsing in the nice icy air conditioning. You can imagine my horror when all that came out of the vents was fire-breathing, alien breath hot enough to toast a marshmallow. Rolling down the windows didn’t help, but at that point, I was ready to ride on the roof of the car with my tongue hanging out — not a pretty sight if you are a 50-plus-year-old woman. The next morning, we made a beeline for Carlsbad, dropped off our RV and headed to Roswell — beautiful, magnificent, Roswell with its aliens and Honda dealership. It was interesting seeing a city that you had grown up hearing stories about. I truly expected to see little, or big green aliens walking down the streets waving at us. We did see the occasional blow-up one bouncing near a doorway or waving to us from a window. The city is a beautiful, modern oasis with fun shops, amazing dining and a magnificent alien disguised as a service tech who repaired our air conditioner and sent us happily on our way in our chilly car. That might make it tempting to conclude that they’re not terribly important, or that the whole UFO question doesn’t really matter, but that would be an illogical inference. Many people get to spend little time reading Shakespeare, listening to classical music, looking at paintings by Van Gogh, or studying theoretical physics, but that scarcely means those things don’t matter. Like literature, music, art and science, UFOs

can teach us a great deal. For one thing, despite government silence about them, they really exist, as an abundance of reliable evidence can attest. So it’s a real phenomenon we’re learning from, not some mythological delusion. But what can we learn from them? Well, for one thing, they can teach us a lot about ourselves and our position in the scheme of things. In our daily lives we may have to keep our gaze lowered and our noses to the proverbial grindstone, but that doesn’t change the fact that there’s a very large

and very old universe out there. And with strange airborne objects so often appearing in our skies, we have a constant reminder that it’s pretty ridiculous for us to have the arrogance to imagine we’re the only intelligent life in the galaxy. Earth-like “exoplanets” (planets orbiting stars other than our sun) have been discovered, in temperature zones favorable to the presence of liquid water and thus to the evolution of life. This ought to strongly suggest that we’re not alone, especially considering that we’re being visited by

UFOs that exhibit astonishing technological sophistication. Numerous visual sightings and radar tracks confirm this. There are more practical reasons why we humans and our governments should take the UFO question seriously. When UFOs come gliding across our skies, they don’t file flight plans, they don’t carry transponders, and they don’t in any way fit into the behavior patterns of conventional aircrafts. From the standpoint of restricted air space, they are unannounced visitors at best, intruders at worst. We need

to know and understand — however tall an order that may be — what’s flying around over our cities. In a world where political tensions run high, we even have the unsettling possibility of an accidental war caused by insufficiently understood flying objects. I’ve said this before, any government not paying attention to UFOs isn’t doing its job. But make no mistake, they’re secretly quite aware of the problem.
