2012 UFO FESTIVAL

Runners in a previous Alien Chase await the starting gun.

The Alien Chase starts off Saturday’s events

Noah Vernau Record Staff Writer

Lovelace Regional HospitalRoswell will be sponsoring the 18th annual Alien Chase on June 30 at 7 a.m. The chase, put on by the Roswell Recreation Department and Roswell Runners Club, will feature a 5K walk, a 5K run, a 10K walk and a 10K run, with nine age divisions for both men and women in each race. Runners will start and finish at the Roswell Convention and Civic Center, 912 N. Main St., and utilize the Spring River Corridor. Registration is $15 before June 25 and $20 thereafter. Participant packets can be picked up at the Civic Center on Friday, June 29, from 4 to 6 p.m., and on race day from 6 to 6:30 a.m. The Alien Chase started in 1995 during the first UFO Festival, and with more than 400 participants last year, the chase remains a cornerstone of Roswell’s most popular event. “We’ve been there since day one, and always considered ourselves to be an integral part of the whole deal,” said Bob Edwards, Runners Club president. “And in these times, where physical activity is needed, it’s just another opportunity for us to get out and exercise.” Alien-themed awards will be given to male and female finishers in each age division, courtesy of

Donna’s Ceramic Studio. All participants will receive colorful shirts designed by Larry Welz. Costumes are encouraged, and a prize will be awarded for best costume. “We try to keep up the fun end of it,” Edwards said. “With the Recreation Department, we encourage folks to get out and exercise, but we also want them to have some fun at the same time. ... “And we always hope that participants can meet people of an equal ability, and form running partnerships.” Proceeds from this year’s event will benefit the Roswell Humane Society. “It’s a good thing to support because there are so many neglected and unwanted animals out there,” Edwards said. “The Humane Society does a worthy task in the community by trying to accept and find homes for as many animals as possible, so you can’t go wrong. ... “Personally, my animals are all from the Humane Society or the Animal Welfare Alliance. So it’s helping a good cause; we want to encourage folks to adopt if they can, and support the Humane Society.” Runners can register at the Recreation Department, the Runners Club or online at active.com. For more information, contact Edwards at the Recreation Department, 624-6720.

Mark Wilson: Roswell 2012

Noah Vernau Record Staff Writer Photos from Mark Wilson’s book Roswell: 2012

A young student did not know he would be telling a story when his teacher asked him to draw the inside of a blade of grass. His art class sketchbook assignment at SouthfieldLathrup High School invited careful thought, and led him to a one-on-one conversation with Mr. William White. Struggling to envision the raw specificity of his subject, he asked his teacher what he wanted. The young student was told he could draw his dreams. Mark Wilson utilizes lessons learned in illustration as an award-winning photographer for the Roswell Daily Record. A regular contributor to the Associated Press, his pictures can be seen across the country in publications like the USA VISION MAGAZINE

Today, Chicago Tribune and The New York Times. One of his earliest lessons in art – draw what you want – remains an integral part of Mark’s creative approach, where conveying the inside of a blade of grass depends more on arrangement than practiced execution. “It’s a matter of capturing a moment, whether it’s real time or imagination,” Mark said. “And I learned the same concept applies in both illustration and photography. You have to have good composition. “... It’s like telling a story: You have to put it together.” Growing up outside Detroit, Mich., in the 1960s, Mark identified art as his first passion before he was 10 years old. His entire family understood the world visually. His mother painted, his father was once a draftsman for Chrysler and Mark’s older brother John was a talented young

artist. At 13, Mark purchased a Pentax K1000 with money he earned delivering newspapers for the Detroit Free Press. He began taking still life photographs of different subjects around the house, such as his mother's perfume bottle collection. Mark has not forgotten the excitement of flipping through the results from his first roll of film. When Mark was unhappy with a photograph, he used to take out his pencil and paper and sketch it the way he wanted it to look. And as time progressed, Mark felt he was onto something. Mark had three interests in college: graphic design, photography and illustration. He attended his first year of college at Detroit Mercy, where he had an art professor named Lloyd Reidel. At the beginning of the semester, the professor graded Mark C after C after SUNDAY, JUNE 24, 2012

C. And no matter how hard he worked, it seemed to him that Reidel was unimpressed. When he finally approached Reidel, Mark asked him why he kept getting poor grades. He told his teacher that he believed his drawings were among the best in the class. Reidel agreed. “Then I realized what he was doing,” Mark said. “He was telling me to explore. That whatever I did, I could do better.” Mark spent two years in the Bible Belt after his time at Detroit Mercy, a drastic change of culture that took him to Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Ark., and then to Memphis Academy of Arts in Tennessee. After two years in the south, he planted his feet in Portland, Ore., fulfilling a dream he had since Junior High. Mark lived in Portland for the next five years, working several odd jobs before deciding it was time to restart his educa-

tion. He enrolled in Portland State University, and became a photo editor and cartoonist for the school’s newspaper, The Vanguard. “All throughout my 20s, I didn’t know what I was going to do artistically,” Mark said. “I was trying to meld everything: paintings, photographs, drawings. When I started in newspapers, I was basically hired on artistic skills.” Mark’s eye for composition landed him a position at the Arkansas Democrat, where he started as an advertising and promotions photographer in the early 1990s. He shot used cars, apartments and the House of the Week for the Sunday real estate guide. The advertising part of the job required fashion photography, which Mark excelled at, and before long, Mark transitioned into photojournalism. By 1995, Mark was winning awards for features and news photography.

Mark was seven years old when John joined the Air Force during the Vietnam War. The two brothers were close despite their age difference, sharing an interest in sports, and would often play catch in the backyard. John taught his little brother how to play baseball left-handed, a switch in form that Mark continues to this day. Mark always admired his brother’s artwork, which included a painting of a race car that for years adorned the basement entryway in the family’s Michigan home. Throughout John’s deployment, Mark continued to draw. On July 24, 1969, the day Apollo 11 splashed down into the Pacific Ocean, Mark received a phone call about his brother, who had been honorably discharged from the Air Force after the discovery that John suf-

Rey Berrones Vision Editor When Joe West and the Santa Fe Revue came to Roswell and played as part of the Xcellent Music at AMoCA Series on April 20, it became obvious that they should become part of the UFO Festival. According to Bob Edwards PITA event promoter, “Joe West is a family-friendly New Mexican musician that plays a great mix of eclectic music about rocket ships, robots and science fiction, which is perfect for the audience that typically attends the UFO Festival. “It became obvious that he is a perfect fit for the festival when he started playing songs that were written about and inspired by the UFO festivals that he had attended in the past,” Edwards continued. Although West is typically placed in the genre of country music, it is more accurately described as cowboy poetry set to a soundtrack of folk rock.

PAGE 14

Those who attended the April 20 show at the Anderson Museum were treated to his wonderful theatrical presentation of these musical stories, complete with children dressed as robots entertaining the crowd. The concert turned into a family affair when Archie West, Joe’s uncle, joined the stage. It is obvious that Archie influenced Joe’s cowboy poet style, and because of that their musical connection is effortless and fluid. Hearing Archie play is always a treat, because he is the living history of the American West and the stockmen that settled the New Mexican countryside. So much so that Jack Schaeffer based the character Monte Walsh on Archie. So far, Archie has been portrayed by Lee Marvin and Tom Selleck on the big screen, but the genuine article has a excellent stage presence that gets people dancing. Of course, they are not the only ones in the family

He explores fun topics like robots falling in love with smoke machines, road trips, and UFOs. His music is full of such

lighthearted antics, and it is backed up by musical chops, as evidenced by the fact that he won the Best Male Vocalist award and the Best Songwriter award from the Santa Fe Reporter. BOOKS

Rey Berrones Photo John LeMay and Roger Burnett sign books at the Roswell Historical Society Archives building.

Legendary Locals of Roswell

Julia Bergman Record Staff Writer

While many associate Roswell with extra-terrestrial creatures and their invasion via flying saucers, a la 1947, a new book sheds light on those—illustrious and unhailed— who navigated through the city and on many occasions considered it home.

Legendary Locals of Roswell, the product of a first-time collaboration between Roswell author John LeMay and Roger Burnett, the administrative director of the Historical Society for Southeast New Mexico, is one edition of a dozen released thus far, as part of a new series from Arcadia Publishing.

The book provides snapshots of more than 100 personalities who are indicative to Roswell through area or national recognition and contributions. Some of the notewor-

thy individuals profiled include Mine That Bird, Robert Goddard and Roger Stabauch. Additionally, the book features images from photograph archives of the Historical Society and private collections. The crux of the book was generated from Burnett’s encounters with Historical Society visitors who were unaware that the likes of Roy Rogers met and married his second wife in Roswell. The conversations usually continued with mentions of others who had connections to the city such as Demi Moore and John Denver. “You think you know people, you knew what they did, oh yeah he’s famous because he did this, and then you do some research … especially some of our local people. … They all had things that I was not aware of,” Burnett said. Burnett eventually created a brochure entitled, ‘people of interest in the area.’ The Roswell Chamber of Commerce and the Roswell Visitors Center

started to feature the brochure, which flew off the shelves. Due to its overwhelming popularity, Burnett stopped printing the brochures and opted to Xerox copies to save money. LeMay, who has penned several books for Acadia, introduced Burnett to its ‘Legendary Locals,’ series. And thus, the 128-page paperback was born. Due to page limits and formatting, LeMay and Burnett were unable to include all the personalities and material that they would’ve liked. A local sales representative from Arcadia says the book is doing well thanks to its recognizable characters. During a previous stop in town, he said to LeMay, ‘You know who's the most famous person in the book from what I can tell? The horse,’ referring to Mine That Bird. Legendary Locals of Roswell is available at local venues such as the Historical Society, Hastings, Walgreens, and Tinnie Mercantile or online at amazon.com.

Yvonne R. Smith

Hypnotherapist/abduction researcher Yvonne Smith began researching the UFO

phenomenon in the late 1980s. After 2 years of studies and 1000 hours of internship at the California Hypnosis Motivation Institute, the only accredited Hypnosis College in the United States; she received her hypnotherapy certification in 1990. Specializing in cases of posttraumatic stress disorder, she uses her hypnotherapy skills to assist such victims to work through their anxiety, with many of her subjects referred to her by physicians and psychiatrists who believe Smith's expertise can benefit their patients. In fact, many such patients are themselves doctors, university professors, engineers, lawyers, domestic and foreign pilots and other professionals. Because Smith [who is internationally known in UFO circles as simply “hypnotherapist Yvonne”] observed that many of the PTSD cases being referred to her involved subjects describing similar patterns of UFO abduction encounters, she founded Close Encounters Resource Organization [CERO] as a support group for such individuals in 1992.

2012 UFO FESTIVAL She is also on the board of the Organization for Paranormal Understanding and Support (OPUS) which furthers support for such subjects. In addition to being a hypnotherapist "in demand", since 1991 Yvonne has traveled extensively, presenting lectures in the United States at M.I.T. and several other universities, at many American "UFO" conferences. The International UFO Museum & Research Center at Roswell, NM annually invites Smith to present multiple lectures, be a panel member and be moderator of their investigator panel at Roswell’s internationally known UFO Festival. She has lectured and conducted many standing-room-only experiencer sessions at the International UFO Congress in Laughlin, Nevada, U.S.A. and has also lectured for several years at international conferences from South America to Europe. Comfortable in front of cameras, Smith's 25-30 television appearances have included programs such as The History, Discovery, and Biography channels, The Montel Williams Show, Intruders, MSNBC, Encounters, Sightings, Joan Rivers, Rosanne Barr and The Leeza Show. She was interviewed on Germany T.V. and Italian television for broadcast to Italy and other European countries. Telemundo T.V. selected Smith to participate

in a project with Jaime Maussan and Dr. Roger Leir. Having her living room turned into a television "studio" for many hours has been a common occurrence, and she is frequently a consultant to producers, directors and actors for movies and television programs in the works. In 2009, the Biography Channel featured Smith’s regressive hypnotherapy on “Alien Intent” which was co-produced and narrated by prize winning author Whitley Strieber and also featured well-known surgeon Dr.Roger Leir. She is the author of CHOSEN: Recollections of UFO Abductions Through Hypnotherapy which exposes, with dramatic regressive hypnotherapy transcripts, the hidden memory trauma reality suffered by abductees.

Tom Carey

UFO Researcher/Investigator Thomas J. Carey, was born and raised Philadelphia. He attended public schools where he was competitive in three sports. He attended Temple University on an athletic scholarship and graduated with a B.S. degree in Business Administration. After a stint in the Air Force where he possessed a TOP Secret/Crypto clearance, Carey became interested in anthropology and human evolution which he pursued at California State University, Sacramento. He received a Masters Degree in Anthropology. He then received a fellowship to pursue a Ph.D. in anthropology at the University of Toronto. Carey became interested in

UFO’s while in high school and rekindled that interest when he became the MUFON (Mutual UFO Network) State Section Director for Southeastern Pennsylvania (1986-2002). In that capacity, Carey investigated local UFO sightings in the Delaware Valley which encompasses the five-county area surrounding Philadelphia. Since 1991, his research has focused solely on the so-called “Roswell Incident” and the alleged retrieval/cover-up by the U.S. government of an alien spaceship and crew that crashed near the town of Roswell, New Mexico in July 1947. In this research, he has worked closely with Roswell investigators Kevin Randle (until 1996) and Don Schmitt (since 1998). He was a Special Investigator for CUFOS (the J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies) from 1992-1997 and served on the Board of Directors from 1997-2001. Carey’s research has contributed to a number of books and articles on the Roswell Incident such as The Truth About the UFO Crash at Roswell (1994) by Kevin Randle and Donald Schmitt and will ultimately yield additional books and articles on the subject. He has also appeared as a guest on many radio and television shows concerning the Roswell Incident as well as appearing in numerous Roswell Incident documentaries. He has lectured all over the country regarding the subject. His photo appears in the Hall of Fame for the International UFO Mu-

phenomena in all its various incarnations. Training by the Army as a helicopter pilot, intelligence officer and military policeman as well Air Force training as both an intelligence officer and a public affairs officer provide Randle with a keen insight into the operations and protocols of the military, their investigations into UFOs and into a phenomenon that has puzzled people for more than a century. Randle’s educational background is as diverse as his military experience. As an undergraduate at the University of Iowa, he studied anthropology. Graduate work included journalism, psychology and military science at the University of Iowa, California Coast University and the American Military University. He has both a master and doctoral degree in psychology and a second master degree in the Art of Military Science. During his investigations, Randle has traveled the United States to interview hundreds of witnesses who were involved in everything from the Roswell, New Mexico crash of 1947, to the repeated radar sightings of UFOs over Washington, D.C. in 1952, to the latest of the abduction cases. Randle was among the first writers to review the declassified Project Blue Book files. He was among the first to report on animal mutilations and among the first to report on alien abductions. Randle also was the first to report the alien home invasions and among the first to suggest humans working with the aliens. He has written extensively on UFOs beginning in 1973 with articles in various national magazines. He has published many books about UFOs starting with “The UFO Casebook in 1989 and continuing to Roswell Revisited in 2007. His recent book is “Crash: When UFOs Fall from the Sky.” Randle was away from his UFO studies when recalled to active duty with the Army that included a tour in Iraq from 2003-2004. He re-

Robert Salas

Robert Salas is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, class of 1964. He served seven years on active duty before separating from the Air Force in 1971. While on active duty, he worked as a Weapons Controller, flew target drones, commanded inter-continental ballistic missiles as a launch officer and worked as an Air Force missile propulsion engineer on the Titan III program. In 1969, he earned a Masters Degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology. From 1971-73, he worked as a safety and reliability engineer for Martin-Marietta Aerospace and Rockwell International on Space Shuttle design proposals. From 1974 until his retirement in 1995, he worked for the Federal Aviation Administration as an aircraft structures certification engineer. In 1998, he earned a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Washington. From 1998-2005, he worked as a high school mathematics teacher. He currently teaches science at a private school and tutors students in mathematics. In 2005, he published the book Faded Giant with co-author James Klotz which details his UFO incident while stationed at Malmstrom AFB, Montana in 1967. Salas has been publicly speaking about his incident at UFO conferences, radio and television for over sixteen years. On September 27, 2010, he co-sponsored a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington DC where he and six other ex-military witnesses testified to the reality of the UFO incidents at U.S. nuclear weapons bases.

Donald Schmitt

UFO Researcher/Investigator Donald R. Schmitt is the former co-director of the J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies in Chicago where he VISION MAGAZINE

served as Director of Special Investigations for 10 years. Prior to that time, he was a special investigator for the late Dr. J. Allen Hynek and the art director for the International UFO Reporter. Schmitt graduated from MATC with a degree in Commercial Art and graduated cum laude from Concordia University with a degree in Liberal Arts. He is currently taking graduate courses in Criminal Justice. He is author of numerous articles about UFOs as well as the co-author of two best-selling books UFO Crash at Roswell, The Truth About the UFO Crash at Roswell, Witness To Roswell, unmasking the 60 year cover up and Roswell, The Chronological Pictorial. He has appeared on Oprah, CBS 48 Hours, Larry King Live, CNN News just to name a few. Schmitt has led and organized the three only archeological dig projects at the actual Roswell crash/debris field conducted in 1989, 2002 and 2006. The second effort became the central theme of the highest rated show up to that time in the history of the Sci Fi Channel The Roswell Crash: Startling New Evidence. He is an internationally known lecturer including Battelle Institute. His interview list includes Oprah, Peter Jennings, CBS 48 Hours, Paul Harvey,

Larry King Live, Montel Williams, Mancow Muller, Kevin Mathews, Art Bell, George Noory, Shirley McClaine Show, Fox Good Day LA, NPR, Mutual Broadcasting Network, CNN Investigates, Sci Fi Investigates, Disney Channel, The Travel Channel, BBC, Learning Channel, Today Show, NBC, ABC News, CNN News, OMNI Magazine and many more. He was an on-set consultant at Paramount Studios on one episode of the TV series Roswell. The basis of his research and consultation has been the theme of many documentaries including UFO Secrete: The Roswell Crash and two-time British Academy Award winner producer John Purdies’s The Roswell Incident. Schmitt feels that by far his greatest achievement was the Golden Globe Best Picture nominated motion picture Roswell, that was based on the first book.

made the decision that he would no longer willingly be victim to their bizarre quests. With the abduction of his young son, he was determined to change his role in life from being the “hunted” to the “hunter”. Every path he took would equip him mentally, physically and intellectually to become a warrior for his cause and to assume the role he was born to play. Sims has spent the past three decades researching the world of alien beings. His area of focus has dealt primarily with medical and scientific evidence of human/alien contact. To that end, he has spent years studying and training in a broad range of areas that would provide him with a full array of skills necessary for his search to find evidences of these enti-

ties. From his accomplishments and certifications in hypnotherapy, to his education in Graphoanalysis (handwriting analysis), he has pursued extensive training to assist in his efforts to aid abductees in reclaiming memories of their experiences. In addition to learning the methods for memory retrieval, Sims has acquired considerable training in police, military, intell and investigative work.Being the first to collect and share the concept of alien implants, Sims has been sought by those in the UFO communities, as well as those within the medical and scientific communities, to share his breakthrough methods at worldwide conferences. In addition to this global recognition, he has been acknowledged for his contributions via a series of awards and commendations. His acclaim is further recognized through the many requests

Travis Walton

Travis Walton is the subject of the Paramount Studios movie, Fire in the Sky, based on his book of the same name. On November 5, 1975 he was a 22 year-old member of a seven-man logging crew cutting trees in the forested mountain region of Arizona. On the way home from work, the crew encountered a strange glowing object, resulting in an incident that has become recognized as the best documented case of alien abduction ever recorded. Walton recklessly left the safety of their truck to take a closer look. Suddenly as he walked toward the light, he was blasted back by a bolt of mysterious

energy. When his companions fled in fear and reported their UFO encounter, they were suspected of murder and give polygraph exams. They all passed. After a five day massive manhunt searching for Walton – or his body – he suddenly reappeared, disoriented and initially unable to tell the whole story of his terrifying encounter. In Fire in the Sky, Walton relates in his own words the best documented account of alien abduction yet recorded, the story of his harrowing ordeal at the hands of silent captors, his return to a disbelieving world, interrogators, press, debunkers and his efforts to try to make a truly significant contribution to the world's understanding of this phenomenal after all. He speaks to audiences and media around the world to share what it has been like living through the ordeal of the experience and its after-

math. He presents the evidence for the incident and takes wide-ranging questions from the audience, which usually results in bringing out new perspectives and bits of information previously overlooked.

Frank Kimbler

Frank Kimbler is an Assistant Professor of the Earth Science at the New Mexico Military Institute. He is a relatively new researcher in the field of UFO studies but has made some interesting discoveries. He has worked as

2012 UFO FESTIVAL a professional geologist for more than 30 years and has taught school for almost 1/2 of that time. He has worked as an oceanographer for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and as a mining engineer for the State of Arizona. He moved to New Mexico in 2009 after accepting a teaching position at the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell. Shortly after moving to Roswell he took a keen interest in the story behind the Roswell UFO incident. His research has resulted in the discovery of a number of physical artifacts from the debris field area including metallic fragments, plastic, metallic buttons, and a 50-caliber bullet (WW2 era). His research has been featured on a number of Internet talk shows and two up-coming National Geographic TV programs about UFO's. He does not like secrets and is dedicated to discovering answers and using good science. http://roswellartifacts.blogs pot.com/

Dr. David Rudiak

David Rudiak has a Bachelor's in Physics and a Doctor of Optometry from the University of California, Berkeley plus graduate training in biophysics and neurophysiology. He has done research and published scientific papers on brain

wave recording to visual stimuli and visual stimulation with magnetic brain stimulators. He has used this scientific research background to debunk claims that alien abduction reports are the result of weak Earth magnetic fields causing hallucinations in the brain. Besides the Roswell Festival, at which he was first a speaker in 2009, he has also been a speaker at the Aztec and Ozark UFO conferences. In Ufology, his main area of expertise is the alleged Roswell saucer crash of 1947, which he has been studying since 1994. He is perhaps best known for his work on reading the telex photographed in Gen. Roger Ramey's hand as Ramey tried to debunk the Roswell crash as a weather balloon. Ramey's memo mentions "the victims of the wreck" and shipping something "in the disc, words and phrases which he and others consider to be smoking gun proof that a saucer crash really happened. His work on Ramey's memo was first publicly presented on a 2002 Sci Fi Channel special on Roswell and another TV Roswell documentary by NBC TV in 2007. At the 2012 Festival, he will update new work and insights on the Ramey memo. In addition, he has done

extensive research on other facets of the Roswell case, such as compiling the largest newspaper collection of how the story was reported at the time and how the military ran a debunkery campaign afterward to debunk Roswell and the newly appeared flying saucers seen all over the country. He has compiled a 60 page list of anomalous crash debris descriptions from many Roswell military and civilian witnesses. His research has also be used to debunk the Air Force's modern Mogul balloon “explanation. Many affidavits and essays on key Roswell witnesses can be found at his website. He has also dug into and done write-ups on the 1965 Kecksburg and 1967 Shag Harbor UFO crashes and the 1965 Socorro UFO landing.. Other extensive research has been done on the 1994 Nevada Nellis Range UFO and a 1950 UFO mass sighting over California and Nevada. www.roswellproof.com Copyright by IUFOMRC NM Inc. fered from schizophrenia. He was told John had been in an accident. Just one week from his eleventh birthday, Mark learned his brother had committed suicide. “When John died, my parents melted,” he said. “There was this weird energy over the whole family for years. It was just me, my mom and my dad. And John’s gone. “... I was lost. I was lost throughout the end of grade school, middle school and high school. Totally lost.” *** Although it was never planned, Mark evolved into a successful photojournalist at the Arkansas Democrat. He honed his craft during the days of film photography, which Mark said he credits as a major factor in his ability to tell a story visually. “I think anybody who wants to be a serious photographer needs to take a traditional darkroom course and learn how to do SUNDAY, JUNE 24, 2012

it the old-fashioned way. Then they'll appreciate how nifty digital is. … Digital can correct what film can’t. “In every aspect you had to work 10 times harder with film and pray you got the shot, because you can't look at it to preview it. So you had to know what all those numbers on the camera mean – like the difference between F5.6 and F22. And there's a big difference there. "I think anybody who grew up shooting film is inherently going to be a better photographer. Without that experience, it’s like driving an automatic car without knowing how to drive manual. Photography is like the active part of driving – you're contributing more than just putting it on cruise control and holding the wheel. There's other stuff going on there.” Mark says that after almost 20 years of newspaper photography, he still feels like he’s stealing a paycheck. “To me it's not really a job. It's just something I'd be doing anyway, taking pictures. If I was stone cold broke, I'd be taking pictures of something.

There are parameters to work within, and certain assignments that have to be covered, but I can bring my own particular eye to that project. I always strive to find the shot that no one else sees. It's just a different perspective because everyone is attending that event, but I'm seeing it in a different way. "In photography, it's always trying to find the moment that tells a story.” Mark said that among the hardest things to photograph is a military funeral, seeing the pain of a family suffering their loss. He said part of the job is capturing those moments without intruding. “Those are always hard nights to get to sleep,” Mark said. A more common challenge involves an unwilling subject. In situations like these, Mark describes himself as an amateur comedian, working to disarm the self-conscious. In Arkansas, Mark was once assigned to shoot U.S. Senator Dale Bumpers. As a photographer, his proudest moments were also his most difficult. When his father died in 1983, Mark went through his father’s office to collect personal items, and there discovered he had collected illustrations and photography clippings on a bulletin board above his work desk. And when his mother

passed shortly after 9/11, Mark opened a drawer in her bedroom packed with clips that covered much of his career. “It blew me away,” Mark said. To this day, Mark says his inspiration remains the family that he lost. Above everything else, he strives to keep the legacy of his brother alive, who he still feels in a metaphysical sense through his own creativity. “I want to give John some credit,” he said, “because he never had it. “… He’s the answer. As far as inspiration, I’ve never really looked at another artist except my brother.” Mark completed his first book this spring, a collection of his best photography over the course of five years in Roswell. Where I'm from, in southeastern Michigan, you see buildings and trees but you don't really see that far beyond where you are. “I've always liked New Mexico. I love the Spanish culture, the Native American culture. That adds a lot to it. “… In the cultural aspect, I definitely touch on things like Folklorico, and the Mexican and Spanish culture that's here. It's also a real red, white and blue town. God and country go together here.” Mark said he relishes the idea that a picture can be different for everyone. With

The Roswell Experience

An innovative form of storytelling made a stop in Southeastern New Mexico. The Roswell Experience, the latest example in transmedia, offered a chance for people to participate in a fictional story of alien adventure. In search of an amulet that could save human-kind from a ruthless alien race of reptilians, participants visited up to 32 locations in and around Roswell, including restaurants, state parks and museums.

HISTORY

Illustration of the “Loverʼs Lane” by Gunnor Petersen

Good Old Days Part 2

Stu Pritchard Roswell Historian

The fall season was always parade time and we could be sure that Carl Johnson “of course” (his motto) would board his wobbling and bucking contraption which was a saddle pole extending from a vehicle with off center wheels. Leading every parade were the NMMI cadets dressed in their “pinks and greens,” the best looking uniform they’ve ever had! (Military officers wore “P+G’s” all through WWII). Then, back in those times, there were truly fancy floats. People pitched in for weeks and weeks hand-decorating well-designed floats with pom-poms, gayly colored SUNDAY, JUNE 24, 2012

paper and flowers. The floats were tasteful, inexpensive and well, just great! Then the next day there was a second parade for the “old-timers.” In those days we always recognized our elders with a special parade. They weren’t fancy mostly just to fathers, patriarchs and pioneers riding in a variety of vehicles and wagons with a goodly number of walkers, many in uniform sporting medals and sashes. Just after the parade, the town was invited to a free barbecue held in Haynes Dream Park, just north of the swimming pool, amidst an awning of cottonwood trees just turning a golden brown in the approaching autumn. After the Works

Progress Administration renewed and revised the area, the name was changed to Cahoon Park after E. A. Cahoon, an early town banker (be it ever thus). The evening before the Old Timers Parade, a group of cattlemen, their wives and some ranch cooks dug a large pit, fired it, then placed several full beef carcasses in the pit. After an all-night process of firing and tending, the genuine pit barbecue was served to the many citizens who attended: kids, parents, visitors and all. Each person received a goodly chunk of beef, a slab of homemade bread and sometimes a roasting ear of corn plus a scalding tin cup of black coffee. VISION MAGAZINE

Often there were fireworks and games such as tug-ofwar, horseshoes and field events. Music, often impromptu, would waft over the assemblage as adults and kids danced on the grass. The annual event was great fun, but as attendance grew, the expense of the custom became too much for the city ... or perhaps it was the boring speeches that did in the affair. Still, I think that this particular area should someday revert to the name “Haynes Dream.” After the main parade, everyone went to the “Cotton Carnival.” Of course they’re called “fairs” today. The three-day event was held at the carnival grounds in the area where the Cattle Baron, Wendy’s and Arby’s are today. To the rear (east) where the original Community Little Theatre building was located, were the livestock display barns, where a few attractions were housed including some that could be termed “raw.” I was forbidden to attend although there wasn’t much of a barrier to prevent attendance by young people. In remembrance I offer the following little poem: “The Bawdy Show” The posters were placed on the posts and the fences, A big girlie show was coming to town. The sketch of a woman excited my senses, But father warned me with a terrible frown, “There are things at these shows a boy shouldn’t see, So I warn you please not to bother: But I sneaked under the tent and papa was right, There, in the front row, I saw father. In the early aughts, there were wondrous “Alfalfa Palaces.” The really large ones were somewhat before my time. They held displays of local produce and flowers. Later “palaces” were much smaller and entry was prohibited because of a collapse of one of the earlier hay buildings which caused some serious injuries. With the passing years, I continue to recall a treasure trove of memories: Lover’s lane, a gorgeous tree-lined vista of overhanging trees that formed an awning for the buggies of couples who found romance in the handsome setting. I remember traveling tent shows; chautauqua, bringing stage plays to the city and public events in the old Gothic brick armory, usually boxing or wrestling. Also, it was exciting to view the year’s new Buicks and Cadillacs on display at McNally-Hall’s Main Street auto shops and to watch the enlargement of the “sky-scraper” White Building. There’s more— “bank night” each Thursday at the Yucca Theatre with a goodly sum of money for the lucky person whose name was drawn. Every weekend, we all went to Trieb’s Capitan Theatre, where, for only a nickel, we could follow cowboys Buck Jones, Ken Maynard or Tom Mix, Afterward, I could enjoy a ten cent Coney Island at a small store on the alley, south of the Gilkerson Hotel, or a double-dip ice cream cone at Sunset Creamery (at Second Street and Richardson) for just a nickel. Is it any wonder the old-timers still cherish the “Good 0l’ Days” in Roswell — I do! PAGE 29

UFOLOGY

Roswell 1947 was the Dawn of a New Age Only at rare times in history has the human race found itself truly witnessing the dawn of a new age, but this is precisely what happened in early July 1947 when an anomalous airborne object crashed in the desert northwest of Roswell, New Mexico, and military authorities retrieved metallic wreckage and diminutive non-human bodies from the crash site. Unidentified flying objects had been seen before, notably in the Kenneth Arnold sighting on June 24, 1947, but the Roswell incident was dramatically different. There was debris. There were bodies. There were hundreds of witnesses. And there was a cover-up. On that stormy July night the world changed forever. We had experienced contact with a life form from the Great Outside. We had discovered we were not alone. Not that we ever could have been. Even if we restrict our attention to our own Milky Way Galaxy (one of hundreds of billions of galaxies in the known universe), the cosmos is far too vast and far too old not to have produced an abundance of life. Our galaxy alone contains at least 200

billion stars. We could be so pessimistic as to suppose that only one star in 100,000 has planets in the “Goldilocks Zone” (neither too hot nor too cold to support life) and there would still be two million such stars in our galaxy. And this “one in 100,000” idea is much too modest, because we have already detected numerous potentially life-friendly planetary scenarios just among the stars relatively close to us. Of course, life doesn't have to evolve in all the places where conditions are right, but with conservatively two million such places in this galaxy, even if the chance of life appearing in any one of them by natural thermo-chemical processes were only a very small percentage, the probability of them all remaining permanently lifeless would still be virtually zero, especially given the billions of years natural evolutionary processes have had in which to work. Life has to be out there, and with the Roswell crash we saw some of it firsthand. But our government does not openly acknowledge that anything extraordinary ever happened at Roswell, or that they have knowledge

of any UFO events. Roswell was the dawn of a new age for humankind, but the irony is that on official levels it is as if that new age never arrived. It is as if the light bulb were invented but the government classified it Top Secret and insisted people go on sitting in the dark or reading by candlelight. Make no mistake, Roswell did happen. The evidence is overwhelming. UFO investigators have conducted thousands of witness interviews, establishing a consistent timeline to clarify this remarkable series of events, arguably the most significant in human history. While there has still been no official recognition of all this, similar things have continued to happen. In March 1948, not even a year after the Roswell incident, a large disk-shaped object crashed near Aztec, New Mexico, and the mostly intact object was studied by a team of scientists that included famed atomic weapons physicist Robert Oppenheimer, who (I have argued) lost his security clearance in 1953 not for the proffered reasons but largely because of his involvement with UFO VISION MAGAZINE

retrieval activity. Sightings continued. In August 1950 Nick Mariana took a motion picture of two spinning disks that passed over Great Falls, Montana. Military photo analysts “borrowed” this film, admitted they could find no conventional explanation, and returned the film with critical close-up footage missing. In August 1951 a group of at least eighteen bluishgreen disks flew over West Texas and were photographed by Carl Hart Jr., documenting the famous Lubbock Lights. I found and interviewed several new witnesses many years after the occurrence. The official explanation for the sightings was that people were seeing the bottoms of ducks reflecting city lights! Never mind the fact that one of my witnesses saw the objects from a vantage point out in the country where there were no streetlamps, and never mind the fact that these astonishingly reflective ducks would, by my analysis, have had to be flying over 1,300 miles per hour, a speed somewhat unusual for water fowl. On July 2, 1952, Navy photographer Delbert Newhouse took a motion picture of about a dozen obviously metallic and unaccountable objects flying near Tremonton, Utah. They bear a marked similarity to the disks photographed two years earlier in Montana. Later that same summer a large number of similar craft were seen over Washington, D.C., with both

visual and radar detection. Yes, flying saucers in restricted airspace over the nation's capital! UFO sightings of course have persisted over the years, right up to the present time. Yet to this day there has never been an official public pronouncement from our government to the effect that UFOs exist. There is a well-known movie called Sneakers, in which a team of privately employed professional spies uncovers a black-box device capable of breaking any encryption system. One of the team, played by Sidney Poitier, makes the memorable remark: “There isn’t a government on this planet that wouldn’t kill us all for that thing.” Which is unquestionably true, when it comes to matters of encryption and information security. Is the same thing true of UFO secrecy? Maybe not quite, since we know that some governments have been fairly open with UFO information, though unfortunately not our own government, which seems obsessed with secrecy. Quite possibly needless secrecy. Who knows, since the very reasons for keeping things classified are themselves often classified. And what they don't think you have a “need to know,” they don’t tell you. But whether government officials admit it out loud or not, humankind entered a new era with the Roswell crash of 1947. We are not alone in the universe, and that is definitely something everyone needs to know. SUNDAY, JUNE 24, 2012
