2012 COSMIC-CON
Art Center, Pearson Auditorum, The Spring River Park and Zoo and the Roswell Civic Center are the Roswell venues, while B & B Newstand and The Jahva House Cafe are the Artesia venues. Of course, there will be lots of guests, and plenty of people to meet, both as part of the artist’s alley, and part of panels, presentations and gala events. In addition to the guests mentioned in other parts of this magazine, the Secretary of Higher Education, Dr. Jose Garcia from the Governer’s office will be here for the grand opening celebration on Saturday morning, and will present the Gov-
erner’s Award of Outstanding Media Arts at the gala. The 501st Legion will bring Darth Vader and Chewbacca. Victoria Price will be on hand to present a panel on the late Vincent Price. And, of course, all the independent filmmakers who participated in the shoot-out will be on hand as well. Check out the pull-out schedule of events, drop by the vendor tables to get autographs and get exposed to new artists, and make sure to get a picture with Thor’s hammer! An overview of the Cosmic-Con
Rey Berrones Vision Editor
With the rise of social media and services like Kickstarter, CD Baby and Youtube, these days the creators of our favorite pop culture have become more accessible than ever. With that, fan conventions like San Diego Comic-Con, PAX, Anime Expo, CES, South by Southwest and E3 are more mainstream than they once were. As a result, those conventions have become massive productions that no longer allow the fans oneon-one interaction with their favorite artists and writers. This has given way to some smaller fan conventions that are now taking the place of those conventions. At one time, the SATURDAY,JUNE 16, 2012
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a DIY comic by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman. If you went to a Comic-Con in the late 80s, you may have run into them selling their work and meeting the fans. These days, Paramount Picture’s Ninja Turtles still has a presence at San Diego Comic-Con, but it is a major motion picture put together by Michael Bay, and fans of Laird and Eastman have to wait in long lines to get an autograph. So, now, the only place that up and coming writers and artists have a platform to meet new fans and interact with current fans is at the smaller conventions that have started popping up around the country. Roswell’s Cosmic-Con and
Film Fest is in its first year as a Comic-Con, and second year as a film festival, and it is looking like it has the potential to become a platform for independant filmmakers and upcoming artists and writers because not only is it supported by Famous Monsters of Filmland Magazine, Lobo Anime and the Cities of Artesia and Roswell, but also by several local businesses and venues. Imagine That! is helping to provide the 501st Legion, who will be in and around the event all weekend, but will also show up at the Roswell Invaders game on the June 21 so that Darth Vader can throw out the first pitch. 2012 COSMIC-CON
What does a Comic-Con have to do with a film festival?
Rey Berrones Vision Editor
Because last year’s Roswell International Sci-Fi Film Festival was enough of a success to receive a TIARA award, it is no surprise that there was interest in creating a Comic Convention to work in conjunction with the film festival. To be clear, these days, comic conventions are less about comics, and more about connecting writers, artists, costume and set builders, film makers, and other entertainment industry people with each other. This is mainly because the comic industry is smaller than many of the other entertainment venues. It is full of upcoming artists and DIY publishing, because of the start-up and publishing costs involved. So now, comics are a conduit for creatives to meet and discuss ideas and projects without having to go through all the trouble of actually producing animatics, storyboards or other conceptual productions, and the fans get to have a product in the mean time. It also means that projects that just ten years ago would have been shelved and never seen again get a new life. For example, Kevin Smith wrote a screenplay for “The Green Hornet in 2004, which was rejected, but eventually the screenplay was picked up by Dynamite Entertainment, and turned into a Green Hornet comic miniseries. This isn’t an uncommon occurrence. After the second “Robotech television series (“Robotech II: The Sentinels) was cancelled in 1986, Eternity Comics directly adapted the Sentinels SATURDAY,JUNE 16, 2012
scripts and novels into comics, and although there was no more television show, the Robotech novels and unproduced scripts provided the content for several comic series, all the way up to “Robotech: Prelude to the Shadow Chronicles. The animated feature film Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles picks up where the comic series leaves off. After nearly 100 animated episodes, hundreds of comics and three featurelength movies, the collected stories in the novelizations of the “Robotech universe have not all been produced. These days, Harmony Gold has started production on live-action feature films based on the Robotech universe that has already been explored in the comics. Of course, Robotech is a very polarizing topic for comic book fans and animation fans, because many credit Robotech with ushering in a new era of animation where children were exposed to mature topics, and at the same time it is credited with both the ex-
plosion and death of Japanese Animation. Both of those topics will be explored at the panel discussions during the Cosmic-Con. On Saturday, at 10 a.m. there will be panel presented by Harmony Gold titled “Robotech - The Downfall of the Anime Industry and on Sunday at 1 p.m. during the screening of the film “Carl Macek Robotech’s Universe. The comic industry took a dramatic turn for the worse when the speculator’s market tanked in the early 90s. Between 1993 and 1997, two-thirds of comic book stores closed, many comic publishers ceased publishing, including Comico and Malibu Comics. Finally, in 1997, Marvel declared bankruptcy. Many believe that the bust of the speculator market was because of the “Knightfall and “Death of Superman series of comics that sold better with speculators than it did with collectors, causing many speculators to loose money because there wasn’t enough collectors for the

speculators to make a profit. It was something that the comic industry never quite recovered from, and to this day, comic book sales are down by 90 percent, meaning that the current market for comics is a tenth of what it was in 1992. As these things go, it turns out that the comic industry reinvented itself, and became a new platform that began launching careers. It became a cheap, and sometimes DIY way for writers and film makers to get their product to audiences without having to produce a film. So the comic industry has re-imagined itself as a world where writers and production companies can use graphic novels and online distribution of serial comics as the breeding ground for new films, primarily fantasy and science fiction, due to the prohibitive budgets involved in
building a science fiction world. If you go to a major Comic-Con, like the San Diego Comic-Con, you will find the artist and writer’s alley from the Comic-Con roots, but the crowds come from major film studios coming to network and get direct feedback from the fans on their upcoming projects. In today’s day and age, while a Comic-Con is theoretically all about the comics, in practice, it is all about the industry getting together with the fans and translating characters and stories between many different media, and using comics as the conduit. As a result, Comic-Cons are more about the writers and artists than about comics these days, and they are the perfect place to go and meet the people behind the films, games, television and books that we all love.

It is no secret that artists and film makers have been drawn to New Mexico for centuries. As a result, we have a healthy creative community that has grown stronger with each generation. As some of our artists return to showcase their work at the Cosmic-Con, it is a good time to note there are other artists that grew up in this area’s creative hot-spot who are just at the beginning of this journey. One of those artists is Sienna Fleming. Fleming, 17, of Roswell, was one of the 27 members of the inaugural graduating class at the New Mexico School for the Arts in Santa Fe. NMSA opened in 2010 as a charter school and art institute with enrollment contingent on auditions (music, dance, theater) or portfolio (visual art) review. Fleming was one of six graduating from the visual arts department. Before

NMSA, Fleming attended Roswell High School, and spent her first semester of high school at St. Margaret’s School in Aberdeen, Scotland. Fleming’s most recent work includes a series of photographs shown in the NMSA visual art senior exhibit at the VERVE Gallery in Santa Fe. Her digital photos start with a figure interacting with the landscape or architecture. After printing, cutting, layering and re-photographing the newly constructed collage, the finished artwork becomes a visual play between real and skewed, focused and unfocused, narrative and imaginative. Fleming was early-accepted to the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where she has enrolled in the advertising department. Her current interests include graphic design, photography, cut paper collages, and drawing. Fleming sees herself in the future living and working in a creative field in an urban environment, but looks back fondly at her childhood in Roswell and all the

resume is longer than most adults twice her age. A few highlights of her early artistic career include illustrating a book published by her sixth grade teacher entitled “Down Under in Australia” and at age six winning the national Young Writers and Illustrators competition sponsored by the PBS Reading Rainbow show. Fleming will exhibit work
in Roswell before she heads to college. The Tinnie Mercantile Store and Deli exhibition, “Playing Hookey,” will be an eclectic mix of Fleming’s past and current work, including photographs, ceramics, collages, and graphic works available as postcards and greeting cards. There will be an opening reception July 20 from 5 - 7 p.m.

“International” seems to sum up the drive of the upcoming Roswell CosmicCon and Film Festival—whether it be drawing a global appeal or letting the world know that Roswell is not finished justifying its proverbial place on the map. However, one of the most talented comic book artists at the event is none other than one of Roswell’s own. He hopes to bring what he has given and learned at other comic conventions back to his hometown. Devin Kraft, son of Roswell attorney and columnist Rick Kraft, is set to promote five comics that SATURDAY,JUNE 16, 2012
he has “written, penciled, inked, lettered, and designed,” at the Roswell Cosmic-Con and Film Festival, June 22-24. The 25-year-old has been drawing since before he could write. He said that at the age of four, he redrew Maurice Sendak’s popular children’s book, “Where the Wild Things Are.” “From there, I started mimicking the art found in Japanese animation, and before too long my style started absorbing both American and European comic book art,” Kraft stated in an email. The 2005 graduate of Valley Christian High School completed a film degree from Baylor University in 2009, but never let go of the
VISION MAGAZINE
dream that has gripped him since he was a tot. “I spent the majority of my time in class writing and drawing my own original comics,” Kraft said in an email. “By the time I graduated, I had finished roughly ten or so featurelength comics.” Currently based in Dallas where he is a graphic designer, Kraft has recently taken his art on the road, including participating in the Dallas Comic Convention and the Albuquerque Comic Expo. Exhibiting at larger events, while not forgetting where he came from, gives Kraft a unique edge. “This is RCC’s first year, so this will be a learning experience for everyone,” he stated in the email. “Beyond Hastings, Roswell doesn’t have a real comic book store. … There could be a big audience interested in seeing what comics are
all about, as well as existing fans coming to get rare or hard to find comics from the vendors.” Kraft hopes the Roswell Cosmic-Con will provide what he did not have growing up, when he had to travel to Albuquerque to get the books he wanted. “It’d be nice if there was a place locally that kids could go to pick up comics,” he said. “Comics encourage kids to read, draw, and dream; and it’s a shame that many kids are unfamiliar with the medium. “To put it in perspective, something like 60 percent of all printed material in Japan is sequential art.” Kraft also hopes the Roswell Cosmic-Con will afford an opportunity to connect with likeminded artists and fans. “That’s the best part about these conventions,” he said, “meeting new people and networking.”

Roswell was recognized for excellence in the New Mexico tourism industry on May 16, capturing New Event of the Year at the 2012 Tourism Association of New Mexico TIARA Awards. The city received the award for the 2011 Roswell International Sci-Fi Film Festival: Aliens in Cinema, which was singled out for creative accomplishments, travel marketing and promotion. City of Roswell Marketing Director Renee Roach said the event was an overwhelming success, attracting film buffs from all over the world. "What I really think was the hook was that we did such a great job capitalizing on film tourism, which is a relatively new concept to a lot of destinations," Roach said. "And I think we're learning more and more about what that can bring to the economy. "What also really played a big role is we filled up so many hotels during that period, so we really added to the Lodger's Tax revenue." Roach said that aside from recognition the city received as a tourism destination, the TIARA award will also help to promote the

bility. And that's what we really hope to gain from this (year's) event." This year's event has been re-branded as Roswell Cosmic-Con and Film Fest, coordinated by Phil Kim of Famous Monsters of Filmland. The event will be held June 22-24, and will feature more activities than last year's film festival, including a comic convention, vendor exhibition, and a Masquerade Ball at Spring River Park & Zoo. "We're really excited to bring this element to it," Roach said. "When you talk about science fiction, bringing in these artists can really broaden the scope of what the event can offer and bring in even more visitors than anticipated." UFOLOGY
Are we any closer to full UFO disclosure?
Everyone interested in the UFO phenomenon knows that from the beginning the national government has become a hoarder of secrets with regard to unidentified flying objects. Starting with the closure of Project Blue Book in December 1969, in fact, they have professed to having no interest in the subject whatever. Not only do they claim to be keeping no such secrets, they appear to be indifferent even to the prospect of collecting any. It supposedly doesn't concern them. Nothing could be further from the truth, of course, or at least we had all better hope so. If the government, and in particular the Department of Defense, were not interested in the presence of unaccountable objects in American air
PAGE 14
space, then obviously they would not be doing their jobs. How could they be disturbed about someone's flying a private singleengine airplane over the White House and not be concerned about the idea of flying saucers occupying that space? Clearly, the UFO question has to be one of grave concern to any government awake and functioning. But of course we still have the question of secrecy. There is little or nothing that government agencies are eager to tell the public about UFOs. To try to alleviate this situation, we UFO investigators of course continually do what we can to pry information out of them through Freedom of Information Act requests, and over the years this proce-
dure has yielded some results, but overall a cloak of secrecy remains. In the UFO investigative community, opinions differ as to whether there will ever be full disclosure. In other words, will the government ever say, “Okay, you win, we give up, we are indeed aware of the phenomenon and have been since that object crashed near Roswell in 1947 and we swept down and spirited away the wreckage and the bodies; here are photos of the debris and the aliens, and tours to see them begin immediately.” The UFO community includes disclosure optimists and disclosure pessimists. For one reason or another, some investigators do believe that governmental disclosure is around the
VISION MAGAZINE
corner, that the secret just can't be kept much longer. It looks ever more ridiculous, they argue, to keep denying everything. But I am a disclosure pessimist. In my view, the longer a government keeps secrets like these, the more desperately it has to keep them. We aren't getting closer to disclosure, we're getting further away. President Truman could have decided to open up with the truth in the years immediately following Roswell, but he didn't, and that would have been the time, an opportunity lost. So much dirty water has flowed under the proverbial bridge since then that it has become, I think, too late now for disclosure. Laws and policies have been broken, disgraceful things have been done to keep these secrets. There's too big a bill to pay by now for the truth to come out. I hope I'm wrong and the optimists are right; but don't hold your breath. [Donald Burleson is part of the Cosmic-Con panel presented by MUFON, “Revisiting the Roswell UFO Crash, 65 Years Later” scheduled for Saturday, June 23, at 1 p.m.]
