Culture 4th of July in Roswell By Christina Stock Vision Editor his year locals and visitors have many events to choose from. While downtown Roswell and the mall is hustling and bustling with the UFO Festival and the Filmfest and Cosmicon, on July 3 the public is invited to the Liberty at 312 N. Virginia Avenue for a free patriotic event. The large screen video presentation, “The American Experiment,” will be shown at 5 p.m. and another showing at 7. The event is sponsored by local businesses and individuals who want to add an inspiring and patriotic offering to Roswell’s unique July 4 weekend festivities. The film is a very engaging overview of America’s founding fathers, historical events and present-day America. According to one of the event organizers, Mary Marley, “Adding this very special event to our Independence Day celebrations helps us come together to reflect on our American roots and be inspired about the present and future of this great country.” She adds, “And, there will be cool water, comfortable seating and air conditioning in a great venue, The Liberty.” For more information, visit their Facebook page “Reflecting On Our Roots.” On July 4 the Roswell Elks Lodge No. 969 invites all Roswell Citizens and guests to meet Roswell’s

T

veterans for their annual veterans appreciation barbecue, set to take place from 2-6 p.m. at the lodge. It is free for the first 700 guests. This year will be the 13th year of this popular event and the Elks Lodge is expecting a great turnout. John Wilson, who won first place in the Elks Barbecue Contest in April, is providing the barbecue.Eighteen volunteers of the Elks and Sertoma Club are going to assist him. This year there will be ice cream for dessert. The Roswell Elks Lodge is located at 1720 N. Montana Ave. For more information call 575-6221560. The City of Roswell, Parks and Recreation Department kicks off the 4th of July festivity this year with concerts at the Noon Optimist Park, 1600 N. Montana Ave. at corner College Boulevard, starting at 5:30 p.m. and ending with fireworks. The Noon Optimist Park is just north of Cielo Grande Recreation Complex. The organizers are asking the public to come early for parking. The Chaves County Community Youth Band performs at 5:30 p.m., followed by Robin Scott at 6:30 and The Last Child Band at 8. There will be something for everybody from tejano, funk, blues and rock. At 9:15 p.m. the Sertoma Mike Satterfield Memorial Fireworks will start at the Noon Optimist Park. “The biggest fireworks display I have seen in a long time — some big cities do not have a fireworks display as Roswell does.” This and similar expressions are often heard during Roswell’s Fourth of July celebrations.

Events 20th International UFO Festival includes Roswell Filmfestival and Cosmicon

The international UFO Festival, Alien Costume Contest, Filmfestival and Cosmicon has some “steam” By Christina Stock Vision Editor

T

his year is a perfect constellation of events circling in and around the most famous little city in the universe, “Roswell.” More then a name, it is a legend and it all began with a crash in 1947. Was it an alien craft? An experiment of the Air Force gone terribly wrong? The truth is out there, but if the truth is recognizable after so many reports is another question. This year’s UFO Festival brings again visitors from around the world to Roswell to enjoy new findings, join the panels of experts and scientists, even eyewitnesses. Throughout July 2-5 programs are offered at the International UFO Museum and Research Center and the Roswell Convention & Civic Center for those who want to know more. The Roswell UFO Festival is also for families and

children with live music at the courthouse on North Main Street; lots of vendors, Obediah, the Stilt Walker, who will be entertaining the crowd at the International UFO Museum and Research Center. The Roswell Museum and Art Center is having its annual Pet and Human Alien Costume contest on Saturday, July 4 in the morning for the pets. Registration deadline is at 9 a.m. and the contest starts at 10 a.m. outdoors on the Plaza at the north side of the Roswell Convention and Civic Center. Many volunteers will help with the slithering, two, three or four-legged little “aliens” and their creative owners. The top three alien pets receive trophies and the Best Alien Pet 2015 will receive $50. In the afternoon, it is time for the humans to show their alien side. Registration ends at the Roswell Museum and Art Center at 1 p.m., the organizers highly recommend to register early, the entry-form is available to download at the ufofestivalroswell. com page or at the Roswell Museum and Art Center at 100 W. 11th St. The official Human Alien Costume Contest takes place at the Roswell Convention and Civic Center indoors at 3 p.m. There are two age divisions: Child (tot-16 years) and adult. Creative categories for each age division include: Most Creative, TV/ Movie Personalities and Scariest. First place winners in each age division and creative category receive $50 and a trophy. Second place winners receive a trophy. First place contestants vie for the Best Alien Award of $250. Every year the Alien Costume Contest grows and the competition gets tougher. With this world-re-

8 / V i s i o n M a g a z i n e | Thursday, July 2, 2015

nowned event, the audience is guaranteed a great time. All ages and costumes are invited to enter free of charge. This is not only a costume contest, it is a full-out stage performance. Because it’s more than just posing on stage: it’s about acting too. Participants portray and perform in character and woo the crowd and the judges to win the Best Alien Title and Award of 2015. Spectators are invited and there will be plenty opportunity for photos with all aliens. Visitors to the festival are reminded to pick up their UFO Festival “Passport” and fill it with stamps from the participating businesses for a bag full of goodies. There will be also an information tent and a children’s art tent in front of the Chaves County Courthouse. The Austin Bike Zoo will be fluttering through the crowd with its large and colorful Butterfly bikes. First time will be the multi-rider “Preying Mantis.” Adding to the UFO Festival experience this year is the Filmfestival and Cosmicon, which are returning to the Roswell mall and to Galaxy 8 movie theater. The highlight on Friday, July 3, in the evening is the UFO Festival Light Parade. It is one of the favorite events of the UFO Festival. Roswell’s summer evenings are mild and families, visitors and participants can enjoy the creative floats full of aliens and spaceships. The parade begins at 9 p.m. and runs south on Main Street from Seventh Street to Third Street. see Events on page 9

Events

Continued from Page 8 The main events take place downtown Main Street for the UFO Festival at the UFO Museum and in the Roswell Convention and Civic Center, the Alien Pet and Human Costume Contest at the Roswell Convention and Civic Center and up north at the Roswell Mall for the Science Fiction Filmfestival and Cosmicon. Cosmicon is a wordplay of Comicon, with plenty of opportunities for cosplay, where participants can slip into the role of their favorite comic, movie hero or villain. This time the Cosmicon emphasis is on “Steampunk.” The romantic world of Steampunk is all about the Victorian Age. If the computer revolution would have happened then, Jules Vernes’ books and stories may have not been put into the “fiction” category. “Steampunk” is one of the trending subgenres, popular with the young and old. The local Steampunk Society is expecting many participants from all over the U.S. and a big group from California. Curious to learn more about it? This is the time. There will be several panels and creative interactive workshops at the Roswell mall. The Science Fiction Filmfestival has two parts that grew out of the fact that more and more movies were produced and made in New Mexico. First there are the international and national movies of indie filmmakers that have been sent in to be watched, judged and awarded. In addition, a local film-shoot takes place in Roswell the week before the awards. Those movies have to be created,

filmed and edited all within a week — a challenge for even the most experienced director and movie crew. The entire city of Roswell participates in this, either by providing offices, props, or by acting themselves. Roswell got the “theater bug,” and everybody can watch the finished short films and indie films at Galaxy 8 movie theater at the mall before the Red Carpet Event and Awards ceremony. The organizers advise to get the tickets for the Roswell Filmfest and Cosmicon early. Included in the ticket is an all access pass to the three day film conference and Cosmicon event including workshops, set-production. Kids 10 and under get in free. Tickets and more information is available at roswellfilmcon.com. But what would be a Festival — or two — without stars? If you are a fan of the History Channel, the name Stanton Friedman is forever connected with government secrets and the famous hidden files about aliens and UFOs. His fans are looking forward meeting him and listening to his lectures during this years UFO festival. The big names for the Filmfest and Cosmicon are writer Donald F. Glut and actor Tommy “Tiny” Lister. Lister played the first Klingon to have ever encountered the human race in the Star Trek TV show of 2001. He also played the president in the blockbuster movie “Fifth Element” opposite Bruce Willis, with Adam Sandler in “Little Nikki,” and with Mike Meyers in “Austin Powers Goldmember” and “The Dark Knight,” to name a few. Glut is best known for his novelization of the movie “The Empire Strikes Back,” the nation’s No.

1 bestseller for almost two months, which to date (still in print) has sold over 3.5 million copies. And speaking of Star Wars… the 501st Legion is coming to town! The 501st Legion is a worldwide Star Wars costuming organization comprised of and operated by Star Wars fans. While it is not sponsored by Lucasfilm Ltd., it is Lucasfilm’s preferred Imperial costuming group. Locals and visitors will have plenty opportunities for pictures and “selfies.” Roswell is also the “Cradle of Space Exploration.” Without Robert H. Goddard’s rocket experiments, there would have been no flights to the moon. The local planetarium is named after this fascinating scientist who lived and worked here. This year, visitors can take a trip into the universe at the planetarium. The Roswell Museum and Art Center is offering exciting celestial programs in the Robert H. Goddard Planetarium on July 4. Museum Board Member and former New Mexico Military Institute administrator Bill Siders will have two special programs throughout the day in the planetarium from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The first program is titled “Our neighborhood, the solar system” in which he will have a brief look at the night sky as seen from Roswell in early July, noting some basic constellations and navigation aids. Then, early models for the night sky will be examined as well as basic observations from over 1,000 years, building humans’ knowledge of the solar system. Secondly, the planetarium will feature “The Age of Aquarius.” For thousands of years man has see Events on page 10

Continued from Page 9 observed the night sky weaving myths and star patterns into a pantheon of characters visible in the night sky. Greeks and other observers noted motions of the “fixed” stars over long periods of time. In antiquity, as each constellation of the zodiac moved through the vernal equinox, a new “age” of approximately 2,000 years was said to occur — the age of Taurus during the bronze age, Aries during the rise of Greece and Rome and the Pisces during the Christian era. We are now entering the Age of Aquarius. Who knows what this age will bring? All workshops, lectures and events are listed in our festival calendar, and there is also a map. Tip: if you do not know where you are, take a look at our “skyscraper” downtown - the one on Main Street is next to Peppers Grill and Bar. It is very visible so visitors can’t get lost. The Roswell Daily Record on 2301 N. Main St., from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. is going to be open on Thursday, July 2 for customers and visitors, in case you would like to take a picture or purchase a copy of the original newspaper of 1947 that covered the UFO incident. On Friday and Saturday you find the Roswell Daily Record booth up north at the Roswell Mall, where you actually can be in “the 1947 paper.” There might be changes due to weather or unknown circumstances, so be sure to check the official webpages at roswellfilmcon.com for the Filmfestival and Cosmican and the ufofestivalroswell.com about updates for the UFO Festival.

t is that time of year again, when runners from all over the world and some out-of-the-world athletes of all sizes and ages come to Roswell for the annual Alien Chase organized and presented by the Roswell Runners Club, International UFO Museum & Research Center and the Roswell Recreation Department. New this year is the start and finish location. It is going to be at the Roswell Convention and Civic Center, 912 N. Main St., on July 4. Participants packets may be picked up at the Convention and Civic Center, Friday, July 3, between the hours of 4-6 p.m. Early registration can be made online at active.com. Race day registration and race day packet pick-up will be from 6-6:30 a.m. at the Convention and Civic Center. The races begin at 7 a.m. Entree fee is $20 if received before July 3; late registration is $25. Club members and organizations of 10 or more are eligible for a $1 discount off of their entry. This year, the Alien Chase is set to benefit the Roswell Humane Society again, said Bob Edwards of the Runners Club. “Last year we could give them $10,000.” Edwards said. “We are looking forward to another successful year helping the animals.” “When we started in 1995 in the advent of the first UFO festival, we matched the largest race in town with 200 participants and the following year we topped them with 270 participants,” Edward said. “In 1997 at the 50th anniversary of the alleged UFO incident, we had the biggest turnout with 672 participants. Everybody wanted to be part of it, everybody cared. “The last years our race has been between 565 and 627 participants,” Edwards said. “The people come back every year from Texas, New York, California, Arizona, Colorado, Washington, Missouri, Florida, Illinois, Michigan and last year we even had a big group from Norway and Belgium.” This makes the run one of the biggest in southeast New Mexico. “We always get also new participants, visiting for the UFO Festival,” Edwards said. “It is fun for everybody.” The races are for beginners and pros. There is a 5K walk, 5K run, 10K walk and 10K run. The 10K will take the participants to Enchanted Hills — northwest Roswell — and back. “There will be signs, so do not use bread crumbs or nuts to mark your way”, Edwards jokingly said, “Our squirrels will get them.” see

Writer Contest The Guy

Continued from Page 10 The award ceremony will begin when all runners and walkers have finished. This is a race with many awards given to male and female finishers in nine age categories from 10 and under to 70 and over. “And”, Edwards said, “you never know who will run with you.” The colorful event stands out thanks to the colorful shirts that every participant receives. This year it is a very colorful retro-style. The run also attracts creative runners who dress up in costumes fitting to the UFO/alien theme. The best-costumed athlete will receive an award. There will also be post race drawings for door prizes donated by local merchants. For additional information check active.com or call the Roswell Recreation Department at 575-6246720.

By Reynaldo R. Martinez There’s always that guy. I have been volunteering at the New Mexico Senior Olympics track meet for several years. I am there to help with medical emergencies. Thankfully, the only things I have had to dispense over the years are ice packs for muscle strain and bandages for road rash. When I first started doing this, I used to watch all the races so that I could rapidly respond if someone was in trouble. The last few years I have barely noticed any of the preliminary races because truthfully, watching 50- to 90-year-old people run is not very exciting, especially if you do not know any of them. Instead, I occupy my time reading or catching up on my social media. I am made aware of an injury by the type of crowd noise. There is a distinct sound a sports crowd makes when someone gets hurt and that is when I look up and respond. Now, the sprints are a completely different situation. When the 200, 100 and 50 meter events come up, I stand and pay attention. I know that particular guy will run and there will be a collective jaw drop from the crowd. This year I picked him out early. It is a different guy each year but they all, in general, have see

ed with a Lifetime UFO Achievement Award in Leeds, England, in 2002, by UFO Magazine of the UK. He is co-author with Kathleen Marden (Betty Hill’s niece) of a book in 2007: “Captured! The Betty and Barney Hill UFO Experience.” The City of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, declared August 27, 2007, Stanton Friedman Day. His book “Flying Saucers and Science” was published in June, 2008, and is in its fourth printing. His newest book “Science Was Wrong: Startling Truths about Cures, Theories, and Inventions ‘They’ Declared Impossible” with Kathleen Marden, was published in June, 2010. On July 2, 2010, he was inducted into the Roswell, New Mexico, UFO Hall of Fame for his long term investigative efforts on that important case. Both “TOP SECRET/ MAJIC” and “Captured! The Betty and Barney Hill UFO Experience” have been optioned for movies by Stellar Productions of Hollywood. He has provided written testimony to Congressional Hearings, appeared twice at the UN, and been a pioneer

in many aspects of ufology including Roswell, Majestic 12, The Betty Hill-Marjorie Fish star map work, analysis of the Delphos, Kansas, physical trace case, crashed saucers, flying saucer technology, and challenges to the S.E.T.I. She produced six documentary films in record time that received 6 prestigious awards. With no experience in film making or UFOlogy whatsoever she became a “Contactee Experiencer” in a 2007 UK Crop Circle. Everything in her life changed drastically that day, and she has since become a voice for the “Circlemakers.” Greer has visited more than 100 English Crop Circles personally and been enthralled with the phenomenon since 2006, returning in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2014. Surely one of the greatest wonders of the world, Crop Circles have mystified everyone! Acres of grain are seamlessly swirled down into precise pictograms and Fred & Nancy Williams

coded messages about human evolution. Greer moved swiftly onto the UFO speaking circuit and received a standing ovation at the 2014 International UFO Congress Convention for her presentation on Crop Circles that featured more than 300 photos in 75 minutes. As Greer shares her vast library of Crop Circle images spanning the past 30 years, very few questions are left unanswered. Taking the study into a new realm of possibilities, Greer exposes daunting clips from her films as evidence that plasma vortices and ET Balls of Light are involved in the creation of many Crop Circles. Communications are coming from parallel realities using a language we all understand: Art and Math. PBS affiliate CPT12 TV screened Greer’s last 2 new movies more than 25 times last year. Films include: “Crop Circle Update - The Wake Up Call” and her newest movie, “The SHIFT Has Hit The Fan.” What great exposure for disclosure! Her passion is unrelenting and her presentations offer deep insight into the Crop Circles and their messages for humanity. Greer says, “If you’re a believer be prepared to be captivated. If you’re

a skeptic be prepared to be converted!” LARRY HOLCOMBE Larry Holcombe’s introduction into the world of Ufology came in the late 1950’s after reading two of Major Donald Keyhoe’s books: Flying Saucers are Real and Flying Saucers from Outer Space. A year later, after watching Keyhoe debate an Air Force officer on the old Armstrong Circle Theater, and seeing Keyhoe being censored when he deviated from the prepared script the Air Force forced on the show’s producers, Holcombe was convinced the Air Force was covering up knowledge of UFO’s. Those events started a fifty plus year avocation into the study and research of the UFO phenomenon. In 2006 he took early retirement and started his first novel, “The Great River Disclosure,” a thriller based on the government cover-up of an extraterrestrial presence visiting earth was released in 2009. His second novel in the Disclosure Trilogy, “Satan’s Angel,” was released in 2013 in eBook format. In researching background for the novels he became intrigued by a 1970s NBC-TV documentary, UFO’s: Past, Present & Future. The docu-

mentary endorsed the theory that some UFO’s were extraterrestrial and astonishingly the documentary seemed to have the support of the government. Larry was able to locate the writer/ co-producer of the documentary, Bob Emenegger, and Emenegger provided him with some remarkable background

phenomenon. A detailed book proposal was developed and, in the fall of 2012, St. Martin’s Press purchased “The Presidents and UFOs: A Secret History from FDR to Obama.” Noted nuclear physicist a n d l e c t u r e r , S t a nton T. Friedman, wrote the books foreword. Other noted UFOlogists contributed to the book. Holcombe has spoken to a number of UFO research groups and state MUFON chapters. He has had a number of radio and other media interviews including “The Paracast,” “Fringe Radio Show,” “Fox Radio” and “Open Minds UFO Radio.” KEN HUDNALL Ken Hudnall is a former military officer. He was an instructor in urban warfare at the United States Army Infantry School and has spent the last thirty years researching various aspects of the UFO mystery as well as the paranormal in general. Host of his own internet radio talk show out of El Paso for over 20 years, he has written over 60 books on topics ranging from ghosts, lost treasures, UFOs and conspiracies, including the award wining Manhattan Conspiracy series. His newest book “Sensual Alien Encounters” has been published in April 2015. FRANK KIMBLER Frank Kimbler is an Assistant Professor of the Earth Science at the New Mexico Military Institute and a xenoarchaeologist (a scientist who hunts alien artifacts, or at least tries to). He has worked as a professional geologist for almost 30 years and has taught school for almost half of that time. He has worked as an oceanographer for the National Oceanic and

Atmospheric Administration and as a mining engineer for the State of Arizona. He moved to New Mexico in 2009 after accepting a teaching position at the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell. Shortly after moving to Roswell, he took a keen interest in the story behind the Roswell UFO incident. His research has resulted in the discovery of a number of physical artifacts from the Roswell UFO debris field area including metallic fragments, bakelite plastic like material, military buttons and a 50-caliber bullet (which could be WW2 era). His research has been featured on several National Geographic TV programs, the History Channel, and numerous Internet talk shows about UFO’s. He does not like secrets and is dedicated to discovering answers and using good science to prove that we are not alone in the universe. Kimbler brings credibility to the science of ufology by using remote sensing, sophisticated radiation detecting equipment, and electronic metal detectors to search for artifacts. Given the opportunity he would welcome the idea of having a S.W.A.T. team of good researchers to investigate the global UFO phenomena and the hunt for alien artifacts. TOM KIRKBRIDE Tom Kirkbride grew up in Southern California, where he was a lifeguard on the beaches of LaJolla…thus his Gamadin saga begins. His five-book series is a thrill-packed, character driven adventure about a couple surfers saving the Galaxy. In 2012 his entire series was selected for the Renaissance Accelerated Reader program for schools nationwide. This is the sixth year in a row Kirkbride has had the honor to speak at

Roswell UFO Festival. He also talks about writing to classrooms, writers groups, and book clubs all over the country. DENICE MARCEL Denice Marcel recently accepted the role of State Section Director MUFON Los Angeles. She welcomed the position knowing this could help bring awareness and education to the public about UFO’s and to help expose the blanket of secrecy our government imposed days after the “The Roswell Incident” occurred. Marcel, the granddaughter of U.S. Army Lt. Col. (Ret.) Jesse Marcel Sr., learned at a very young age of her grandfather’s participation in the recovery of a UFO wreckage outside Roswell, New Mexico in July of 1947. It was also at this time Denice learned her grandfather brought home some of the material that he collected to show her grandmother, Viaud and her father, Dr. Jesse Marcel Jr., Col. USA (Ret.) Late in the night, the three of them examined the debris on their kitchen floor. It was Jesse Marcel Jr., then an 11-yearold-boy, who would discover what he described as an I-beam with indecipherable writing. When Jesse Marcel Sr. was later asked of the strange materials they saw he would describe it as, “It was not of this earth”. These words would forever change Roswell history. The events of that evening resulted in her father’s undertaking to make certain that his participation in the Roswell Incident be shared with everyone who wanted to know the truth. As he would often say “I know what I saw!” This would lead to many discussions about Roswell, UFOs, alien life, cover-ups and a quest for the truth. Even though Marcel

didn’t practice hypnotherapy, she did receive her hypnotherapist certification from the California Hypnosis Motivation Institute, the only such accredited institution in the United States. In January of 1997 she accompanied her father and Kent Jeffries for a hypnosis session that Dr. Neil Hibler would conduct on her father over the course of three days. Dr. Hibler was one of the world’s leading experts who used hypnotic regressions for forensic purposes. The Roswell incident has offered Marcel many interesting experiences. Aside from the hypnosis sessions, she accompanied Don Schmitt and Tom Carey on an investigation to General Exxon’s retirement home for an interview, has done radio interviews alongside her father and participated in lectures on the subject. She even had

a small role in the 1994 movie “Roswell.” She also sat with her father as a witness in the 2013 Citizen hearings on Disclosure, speaking on the The Roswell Report. Her most memorable moment, however, was to have had the chance to share with her father his final visit to the debris field, the kitchen of his childhood home from where he first saw the strange material and his final lecture at the Roswell Festival 2013. The oral tradition has now been passed down to his children who will also ensure that the Roswell Incident goes down in history as one of the most memorable events to have happened in UFO history. She currently has a new book in the works based on her grandfather and her family’s experiences. JESSE MARCEL III Jesse Marcel is a freelance writer, author, and

film producer. He was born in Southern California to a modest military family, eventually growing up in the Rocky Mountains of Western Montana. He attended local universities and obtained degrees in finance and economics, along with credits in advanced mathematics and aerospace engineering. As a child, his hobbies ranged from snow skiing and camping out in the front yard to the not-sowell-thought-out mission, to create rocket fuel; a combination of zinc and sulfur that, when mixed in just the right proportions, would singe a few eyebrows and almost burn down a garage. Evenings were spent looking through a large telescope that his father built by hand, or watching Star Trek, if the skies were cloudy. see Speaker on page 23

The ‘Second’ Roswell UFO Crash? By John LeMay

N

o matter how fantastic a story already is there are always those who feel compelled to add or imagine something more to it. As Roswell is famous for the July 1947 UFO crash, perhaps it should come as no surprise that there exists a rumor of a second Roswell UFO in 1949. The basis for this rumor came from documentary film maker Linda Howe and a special agent of the U.S. Air Force at Kirtland Air Force Base, Sgt. Richard C. Doty in 1983. Howe was working with Doty on a documentary on UFOs and was shown a presidential briefing paper on UFO crashes by Doty which oddly mentioned not one, but two separate UFO crashes in Roswell. The first was the familiar Roswell Incident of 1947 while the second was a separate crash that occurred in 1949. While this story is no doubt comprised of some confused or exaggerated information, there does exist the possibility of another strange phenomena taking place near Roswell in 1949. An entry in the appendix of Kevin Randle’s excellent work, “A History of UFO Crashes,” details an incident in which an officer at Walker Air Force Base, Raymond P. Platt, gives a description of a bright white-blue object descending to earth. The object was splitting apart while flying in a downward trajectory toward Bottomless

Lakes State Park on Jan. 30, 1949. Although Platt himself told Randal he believed what he had seen was not a flying saucer, his superior would not tell Platt what it was that he saw because he wouldn’t believe the explanation “even if he could tell him.” Platt also stated that Dr. Lincoln LaPaz, the famous astronomer and studier of meteors from the University of New Mexico, was brought into Roswell to investigate the case. Could this story lend credence to the account of the 1949 Roswell crash pushed by Doty? Although it may seem that way it in fact does not. It just so happens that Jan. 30, 1949, was the day of the most significant green fireball sighting of the 1940s. The green fireball wave began in late 1948 when residents of Albuquerque began reporting sightings of what the Air Force believed to simply be green flares.

This would change on Dec. 5, 1949, when a USAF C-47 saw two green fireballs in one night, one of which traveled upwards instead of descending downward. In nearby airspace over Las Vegas, New Mexico, Pioneer Airlines Flight No. 63 also had a close encounter with a green fireball. The sightings continued throughout December with a close proximity to New Mexico military bases. Fearing a Soviet or E.T. menace the government turned to Dr. Lincoln LaPaz, who had reportedly investigated Roswell in 1947, to help investigate this new phenomena. Ironically LaPaz would get to observe one of the fireballs himself on the road from Los Alamos after a government meeting on the subject. LaPaz was not alone and was accompanied by USAF Capt. Charles L. Phillips, and CAP intelligence officer Lt. Allan B. Clark. The three men saw the green fire-

ball, which according to them also blinked on and off, heading at a straight trajectory before dropping down and splitting apart suddenly. Sightings of green fireballs would occur nearly every evening in December and January of the new year. The big one would occur on Jan. 30 though. Described as the brightest of the green fireballs it was also reported to have been sighted in sev-

eral different states by thousands of people, the thickest concentration of witnesses was a group of servicemen “near Roswell”, however, no mention of Walker Air Force Base is made. Although it is likely that what Raymond Platt observed from his watchtower at WAFB in Roswell was the same object as everyone else, that is still up for debate. Unlike the U.S. Air Force’s investigation of

UFO sightings via Project Blue Book, there was no question that the green fireballs did in fact exist. The only question was what were they? To be continued.

He was indoctrinated early into his grandfather’s legacy, not only as his namesake, but as his protégé. He learned of an amazing tale where his grandfather was part of the discovery of a spacecraft that, in his words, “was not made by human hands.” As the summers of his youth unfolded, the details of the story intensified as he enjoyed the many hours spent with his grandfather fishing on a bayou that ran behind their house in Southern Louisiana. After a short, two-decade detour in investment banking, Jesse returned to his roots to pick up his grandfather’s and father’s crusade. His latest efforts include the book “Alien Crash at Roswell,” a documentary by the same name, an upcoming television series “Paranormal Justice” and a feature film called “Grail.” Outside of the film industry Marcel has been busy engineering a personal air vehicle or “flying car” where he has received international recognition for his application of emergent technologies and design. KATHLEEN MARDEN Kathleen Marden is known around the world as an alien abduction/ ET contact scholar, researcher, author and lecturer. Her educational background in the social sciences has shaped her effort to gain an understanding of the ET contact phenomena. Extensive research and investigation has convinced her that ET races are performing longitudinal studies on the human population. However, it is being covered up due to national security concerns. Her interest in UFOs dates back to 1961, when her aunt, Betty Hill phoned her nearby

home to report that she and Barney had encountered a flying saucer in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. A primary witness to the evidence of the UFO encounter and the aftermath, Kathleen has intimate knowledge of the Hill’s biographical histories, investigation files, and scientific interest in their sensational experience. One scientific experiment may have led to her personal memories of contact. She is associated with the Mutual UFO Network, as its Director of Abduction Research and the Foundation for Research of Extraterrestrial Encounters, as an advisory board member and consultant to its research subcommittee. She is the recipient of MUFON’s 2012 “Ufologist” of the Year award. Kathleen has authored three books, “Captured! The Betty and Barney Hill UFO Experience,” and “Science was Wrong,” with nuclear physicist/ scientific ufologist Stanton T. Friedman, and “The Alien Abduction Files,” with Denise Stoner, and essays in several additional books. She spearheaded an extensive research project, with Denise Stoner, to identify little known commonalities among experiencers in 2012. Her arti-

cles have been published in the MUFON UFO Journal, Open Minds, Alternate Perceptions and FATE magazines and on several websites. Marden has appeared in television and radio programs in the US, Canada, Australia and the UK and has lectured throughout the United States. THOMAS REED Thomas Reed will make public the details of the Reed family case UFO/ Off-world Encounters. He will detail how and why their case became the first encounter officially inducted by a Massachusetts Township and Historical Society. The incidents’ involving the Reed’s made local news on WSBS Radio in the 1960s. The incident and/or disk-shaped craft that was seen descending over the Reed farm in 1969 was issued a HYNEK classification, during the final months of Project Blue Book. Attorney Robert Bletchman, now the Reeds legally retained attorney would mention their 1960’s encounter in support of 33/426, at the United Nations. Bletchman working in conjunction with Mohammad Ramadan, the President of the Parapsychology Society at the United Nations, organized a symposium on the UFO subject in 1992. Reed’s

father, Attorney Howard Reed, would lose his life under questionable circumstances on that same day. Detective Steve White, an officer with over 30 years of law enforcement experience, investigated the Reed case. White did document radioactive hot spots and magnetic anomalies associated with the encounter. The magnetic pull turned a compass needle from a distance of two feet. Officer White would report, “A uthentic e n co un te r with an unknown powerful force”. Reed passed his first and only polygraph test with a score of 99.1%. The test was administered by a veteran police officer at the Department of Defense, Polygraph Institute. It should be noted that this family of professionals have a city proclamation in their honor, and a commemorative bench in the city green.

Debbie Oppermann, the director of the Gt Barrington MA Historical Society said to Reed, “History is a story about the past that is significant and true, yours is one of those stories.” The case was covered by the Boston Globe, Washington Times, the Berkshire Record, Metro Pulse, Chicago Tribune, Berkshire Eagle, Knoxville News Sentinel, the Roswell Daily Record, Indianapolis Monthly Magazine and Los Angeles Times. It was featured at Alien Mysteries, Canada TV, Daily Planet TV, CT Morning Live British Columbia News, EP Daily News, Travel Channel, Raw TV, Fuse TV, Animal Planet, CTV Canada AM Morning show, Inner space TV, CT Morning Live Saskatoon, CP24 News, Fox Red Sofa Morning Show, Discovery Channel, Paranormal Paparazzi, Mysterious

World TV, Destination America, Uncovering Aliens. (Reed appeared on CSI Miami.) RONALD REGEHR Ronald Regehr has been a UFO researcher for more than 50 years. Regehr is a retired aerospace engineer with 36 years of experience at Douglas Aircraft and Aerojet ElectroSystems working in space and space surveillance systems. He is MUFON Director of Documentation and a MUFON research specialist in space satellite technology. Two of his major areas of contribution in UFO research are satellite detection of UFOs and analysis of photos and other data associated with the Roswell case. From 1962 to 1999, Regehr was an engineer with Douglas Aircraft (now Boeing) and Aerojet (now Northrop Grumman). At Douglas he was see Speaker on page 25

part of the Saturn/Apollo design team responsible for the electrical interface between stages of the Apollo rocket. Later he developed the requirements for the first US space station, Skylab, working closely with the astronauts, NASA headquarters, and Douglas designers. At Aerojet, Regehr was part of the team that developed specifications for one of our nation’s top spy satellites, the Defense Support Program, or DSP. The team developed ground data-processing software and interfaces with other program elements. During his career, he held various security clearances up to the level of top secret Q and he was frequently called upon to assist government specialists in evaluation of classified

programs. Regehr first became interested in the UFO phenomena in the mid-1950s as a young volunteer for the Ground Observer Corps. Through the years he continued reading everything av ailable on UFOs, and in the mid-1980s he became seriously involved in UFO research when his knowledge of classified data indicated to him the US government was not telling the pubic the truth about UFOs. In particular, based on technical details in the 1976 Iranian UFO case, Regehr became convinced that US spy satellites were detecting UFOs. Between 1988 and 1994 he published a series of articles establishing that this was true, culminating in his April 1994 MUFON Journal article, “Do Spy Satellites See UFOs?” Also in 1994, Regehr made the

information available to a national audience as a guest participant in a documentary on the Iranian UFO case on the TV program “Sightings.” In 1998 Regehr published a monograph “How to build a $125 million UFO Detector,” which is an analysis of the technical problems involved in satellite detection of UFOs. Regehr’s Iranian UFO paper, which won 1st prize in MUFON’s 2006 “Best Evidence” contest, combined newly published information (Pratt; Maccabee) with Regehr’s analysis to show that the 1976 event in Iran provides irrefutable evidence of the reality of UFOs. Other research done by Regehr contributed to knowledge about the Roswell case. Regehr’s Feb. 2000 MUFON UFO Journal article “Not Enough ‘Foil’,” shows that the 200-yd. diameter debris field described

by Mac Brazel was far too large to have been caused by the impact of a Mogul research balloon. In 1998-2000 Regehr played a key role in bringing to fruition research on the Roswell Ramey office photos carried out by Regehr, Morris, Leveoux, and Johnson. Careful analysis of the photos, rescued from 50 years of obscurity, revealed the times of day the photos were made, that two photographers photographed the debris, that the debris pictured in the photos could not have been that of a Mogul balloon, and even that virtually all of the text of the teletype held by Gen. Ramey was readable. This research, and compelling evidence of just why “Bond” Johnson was able to “scoop” the other Dallas/Fort Worth news media are being compiled in Regehr’s latest book, “What? Another Dang Roswell Book!”

Regehr has been a guest on the television programs “Strange Universe” and “Sightings,” on the Learning Channel and a guest on the Art Bell radio program numerous times. He was a speaker at the 2004 Las Vegas Crash/Retrieval conference on the topic of the Ramey office photos; at the Roswell UFO Festival in 1999 and from 2006 through 2010; at the UFO Friendship Campout at Rachel, Nevada in 1997; at the International UFO Congress in Laughlin, Nevada in 2000; at HUFON (the Houston UFO Network) in 1994; and at MUFON Orange County, Calif. numerous times. He won MUFON’s contest for the Best UFO Case for his work on the Iranian UFO Incident and spoke at the MUFON Symposium. In 2009 Regehr was a featured speaker at the inaugural Galactic Gathering in Denver, Colo-

rado. He has published articles in the MUFON Journal and UFO Magazine, and he has presented several workshops at the MUFON International Symposia. Regehr is the former State Director of MUFON, Utah, and resigned that post to fill the position of MUFON Director of Documentation where he revised and updated the MUFON Field Investigator’s Manual to bring it up to industry standards and enable electronic access and updates for all MUFON members. Regehr lives in Rimrock, Arizona, where he is enjoying his retirement. He is the father of 3 grown daughters and grandfather of 5 boys. Sims has a unique insight into the alien organization which he believes functions similarly to an intelligence agency. He suspects that the alien uses similar covert techniques to spy on and manipulate humankind as he witnessed when working for the CIA during the Cold War. And just as military/intel operatives might try to brainwash a captured spy or POW, Sims believes the alien is able to alter an abductee’s perception of their experience. Over the years, he’s put to use his many hypnotherapy certifications to unravel this alien mind control, and says he’s even trained his own Manchurian candidates as warriors in the alien resistance. A coalition of top-secret government, military and intelligence factions are well aware of the alien presence on Earth, claims Sims, and he says they’re using ‘black ops’ to monitor ET activities. Tactics include unmarked black helicopters and jeeps as well as armed military personnel dressed in civilian clothes that are deployed to UFO hotspots. Sims has even uncovered witnesses to military shoot-downs of UFOs, done to capture and analyze the exotic technology. Sims strongly believes that the American people should be told the truth: “Aliens are among us and they are not here for good!” YVONNE SMITH Yvonne Smith, C.Ht. is the author of “Chosen: Recollections of UFO Abductions Through Hypnotherapy” and her latest book, “Coronado: The President, The Secret Service and Alien Abductions.” In the last 24 years, Smith has lectured at national and international see

TRAVIS WALTON Travis Walton is the subject of the Paramount Studios movie, “Fire in

the Sky,” based on his book of the same name. On November 5, 1975 a group of loggers in the mountains of northeastern Arizona observed a strange, unusually bright light in the sky. One of the men, Walton, recklessly left the safety of the truck to take a closer look. Suddenly as he walked toward the light, Walton was blasted back by a bolt of mysterious energy. His companions fled in fear. When they reported an encounter with a UFO – something they would have considered impossible if they had not witnessed it themselves – the men were suspected of murder. For five days authorities mounted a massive manhunt in search of Walton – or his body. Then Walton reappeared, disoriented and initially unable to tell the whole story of his terrifying encounter. In “Fire in the Sky,” Walton relates in his own words the best

documented account of alien abduction yet recorded, the story of his harrowing ordeal at the hands of silent captors, his return to a disbelieving world of hostile interrogators, exploitative press, and selfstyled debunkers. Travis recounts the struggle to get a fair hearing and confronts his detractors with a stinging rebuttal.

Continued from Page 11 similar physical characteristics: countenance of a sixtyish-year-old male, about 6 feet tall, 240-250 pounds, protuberant belly, thick muscular arms, barrel chest and sinewy legs. Not at all do they project the classic sprinter look. He was wearing lightweight track cleats and he had his own starting block. I knew I had found the guy. He was off by himself practicing his start. If you have never watched a talented sprinter leave the starting blocks then you are missing out on one of the most fascinating human biomechanical maneuvers on the planet. This guy was good. Explosive launch, head down and upper body parallel to the track for several steps, until just the right moment before standing up to extend his acceleration down the track. Fast and smooth! These guys, including this guy, were always different in a couple of other ways. Senior Olympians are a gregarious bunch of folks. Without fail I watch them walk up to complete strangers and within minutes a new friend is made. All of them have an entourage of friends or family dutifully cheering from the stands. My guy, the sprinter was always alone. The past few years I have been watching him move around the field and there are never the friends or relatives hovering about. That is until he runs. Suddenly everyone notices and the guy is inundated. First by the runners he just smoked, needing to shake his hand and then by others as he walks back for his blocks. Today I even saw the fully costumed roadrunner mascot almost fall down as he ran after the sprinter, attempting to pat him on the back. This time I decided to follow behind as he walked and listened to his responses to questions being asked by his new fans. “I felt really good.” “I love running.” “I do this for the fun and to make new friends.” “I really don’t train that much.” Canned responses, offering no substance as to who he was or how he trained to achieve his impressive skills. This year’s spring heats were no exception. This guy displayed total dominance in all of his races. He left the entire field well behind in each of his events. Beautiful form, nary a head bob, arms and legs in perfect synchrony. see Contest– on page 29

I hear the same comments each year. “Who is that guy?” “How is that humanly possible?” “How can someone that old run that fast and that smooth?” I have run and raced extensively in my life. I understand what is physically and mentally needed to do that. It hurts to run that way. My professional training has taught me the biochemical, biomechanical, physiological and psychological functions required to run at that caliber. I have been unable, since starting this volunteer job, to explain how a 60-year-old can run that fast and that smoothly. This year I swore I would learn more about that guy. I needed to know how he did it. After the sprinter collected his last gold medal and gathered his gear bag, he headed for the parking lot alone. My services were no longer needed so I followed, meaning to catch up with him and introduce myself. I had lots of questions. He headed for the far reaches of the parking lot where there was a strange looking hybrid parked between two pickup trucks. I have long given up trying to identify new cars. I just assumed this was one of the new styles that I had not seen before. I sped up to catch him and he seemed to move faster, with a very fluid walking pace. As he got closer I noticed the unique vehicle start to shimmer and a strange hum began to emanate from the hybrid. When he was a few steps from his car a gull wing swept open. I stopped in amazement and he turned to look my way. He winked a knowing eye at me, tossed in his gear bag and followed right behind in a mercurial arc. The car listed under his weight, as if it had been hovering. I closed my eyes in disbelief, to clear them and make sure I was seeing correctly. When I looked again he was gone. I gazed all around and only saw other cars slowly exiting the lot. The runner and his craft had vanished, right before my briefly shuttered eyelids. I stood there, beginning to feel somewhat foolish. I appeased myself with the realization that this was just another day in Roswell. I will hardly be able to wait until next year. Who will be the guy?

Lister made his feature film debut in director Hal Ashby’s final film “8 Million Ways to Die,” and spent the next few years learning the craft and appearing in films heavy in action and in talent: “Runaway Train” with Jon Voight, “Beverly Hills Cop II” with Eddie Murphy, and “No Holds

Barred” with fellow WWF wrestler Hulk Hogan. In the 90’s Lister expanded his resume, continuing to make his mark in films with the be st in th e business. He joined Johnny Depp and the legendary Marlon Brando in the quirky “Don Juan De Marco” and worked with director Quentin Tarantino and actor Andy Garcia in the wan n a-be noir “Things To Do In Denver When You’re Dead.” He would later work again with Tarantino in Jackie Brown. Lister’s 1990’s career benefited from the decade’s surge in African-American filmmaking. Lister has continued with his wide, often eclectic range of roles. He played the Klingon Klaang, the first Klingon ever encountered by humans, in the Star Trek Enterprise feature-length pilot episode “Broken Bow.” in 2001. He played the President in director

UFOlogy

Would full UFO disclosure unravel human society? Part 1

Looking Up

I

t’s a stock device in science fiction films for someone with privileged information to tell his colleagues behind closed doors: “If the public ever found out about this, the authorities could never contain the panic that would ensue.” The assumption always seems to be that people simply couldn’t handle the experience of learning about anything extraordinary, and naturally one of the primary things some theorists think it might be dangerous to learn about is the knowledge that humankind has been visited by beings from other worlds. No less prestigious an entity than the famous Brookings Institute weighed in on this question in 1960 when it issued a 100page report, on behalf of NASA, concerning the likely effects of the public’s finding out what the government presumably already knows about UFOs and their occupants. The report quoted ethnologist Margaret Mead pointing out that there are dangers to be faced when a closed, insular society suddenly comes in contact with an external culture that has very different views, beliefs, habits, and devices. The original society may

either suffer social disintegration or manage to survive only by allowing much of its native structure to be changed by the obtruding culture. The writers of the Brookings report employed Mead’s comments to suggest that the human race, like a primitive tribal group invaded by technologically more sophisticated visitors, might run the risk of losing much of its own identity. Indeed, our own history is replete with examples of this, where invading cultures have displaced indigenous religious, moral, and social precepts with their own systems. Whether this notion extends to scenarios in which humankind, as the indigenous life form, comes to be open to alien influences from the Great Outside, is food for speculation. For a long time in the field of UFO studies people have hypothesized that perhaps the many UFO-themed movies appearing over the years have done something toward “acclimatizing” the public to the notion of extra-terrestrial cont ac t , p o s s ib l y e v e n with some covert government funding for that purpose. Certainly such films could have had that

effect, much as the 1945 Alfred Hitchcock movie “Spellbound” had the effect of popularizing the notion of psychoanalysis, which up to that time the public had little acquaintance with. Clearly, the medium of film is capable of affecting, informing, and even manipulating popular opinion and public awareness. But some sociologists have felt that the Brookings Institute’s remarks about social disintegration need to be put in perspective. Would a lot of people have found it disturbing in 1947 if the government had told them the facts about the Roswell UFO crash? Quite possibly. Would people be equally disturbed to hear about it now? I doubt it. Nowadays the main reaction would probably be annoyance over not having been told sooner. The point is that the Brookings report might have been an accurate assessment at one time, but things change. One of the variations on the “disclosure would bring social disintegration” theme is the idea that such disclosure of UFO-related information (the knowledge that we have been visited by aliens) would be injurious to the whole fab-

ric of human religion. In some respects there could be an element of truth in this, but it seems to me that the case is overstated. Official UFO disclosure would amount to informing everyone that our position in the scheme of things isn’t exactly what it has often been thought to be, that we flatter ourselves if we imagine that we alone have intelligence and social organization or that our cozy little world is the only place where complex life has evolved. For some, disclosure would be a considerable change from the traditional view of ourselves as holding a unique, special, privileged position in the universe. If there are intelligently guided airborne objects in our skies, objects that didn’t originate on Planet Earth, then we belong to a cosmic community more inclusive than we’ve ever dreamed. Even so, in my experience this doesn’t necessarily disturb people’s religious beliefs. While it’s not a personal issue with me since I don’t happen to be religious, I have known many people who are deeply so, yet are quite comfortable with their awareness that extra-terrestrial beings have visited our planet. These folks

simply find no conflict between their belief systems and what they know to be UFO-related realities well supported by evidence. On the other hand, depending on precisely what sorts of secrets the government is keeping, the Brookings Institute report writers may have guessed right, in part anyway, when they inferred that some of these secrets, if revealed, could bother some people. I say “guessed right” because in 1960 when the report was written, its authors were unlikely to have known some things we investigato rs h ave s in ce learned, and even the government itself could not have known some of the things it must know now. In particular, I have long suspected, just on the basis of simple logic, that the government must by now have taken advantage of improved techniques, recently developed, for extracting and sequencing DNA, to do thorough gene-sequencing on the alien bodies recovered from the Roswell UFO crash of July 1947. What might this DNA analysis have revealed? Almost anything it can have revealed would amount to spectacularly important information, and there must be

a very wide spectrum of possibilities. Just as a hypothetical example, suppose the secret keepers knew that the DNA analysis on the alien bodies had revealed compelling genetic evidence that we humans and these extra-terrestrial beings share a lot of homologous genes, enough perhaps even to suggest that they and we could somehow have common ancestors, as we do have with other life forms here on Earth. It seems likely that release of such information could be troubling to people having beliefs embracing a more traditional view of the origins of human life. But would the official admission that UFO wreckage and retrieved alien bodies simply exist be enough to cause frenzy and panic? There is no reason to think so.
