Structured Knowledge Management using Skills Assessments In this white paper, we examine knowledge assessment and the benefits and process of using skills assessment for benchmarking in the field of design technology. There is particular focus on the CAD/BIM sides of engineering companies, but the process applies to all facets of business. The examples we refer to in this paper are based on Autodesk environments and processes (e.g. CAD and BIM), but are also applicable beyond this to Adobe, Graphisoft, Bentley and similar packages. We examine the process of analysing and harnessing this data to calibrate goals to build major improvements and measure progress, with one of the most practical and visible benefits of knowledge management being the ability to facilitate decision-making capabilities. We also consider the challenge of overcoming the innate fear of assessments.
The undefined tacit knowledge bank of a company is often the asset that makes the company ‘tick’. As the amount of knowledge increases, the need to formalise the process of knowledge management is increasingly critical. To use knowledge most effectively across multiple teams, processes need to encompass the highly structured areas, as well as the more tacit processes. Historically, the learning process for previous versions of AutoCAD was relatively straightforward, in that a student could attend a fourday fundamentals training course and understand the basics. The more subtle tricks of the trade were expected to be picked up from working with experienced users on various jobs as time progressed. While this worked for some staff, there were too many unreliable assumptions in the

process of ‘learning by osmosis’. This resulted in an inconsistent skill base for many companies, hindering team efficiency and causing disruption. A2K Technologies identified the flaws in this process, and implemented new programs to ensure our clients’ staff are productive. The process is based on ongoing mentoring, as opposed to expecting a student to absorb an entire package in a few days, as well as a methodical process of skills assessments and audits so the courses are tailored to specific needs. The Knowledge Smart system is used at A2K Technologies to conduct skills assessments for our clients. Knowledge Smart has proven to be an ideal company to partner with, as their evolution of knowledge management follows the same logic. The Knowledge Smart engine provides mature material with flexible customisation options and extensive data extraction tools. This enables A2K Technologies to efficiently tailor assessments to suit specific needs and manage the ongoing process.
The Importance of Benchmarking vs Assumptions Benchmarking is the process of comparing cost, time or quality of specific operations, to establish a measurable standard. This facilitates creation of a business case to address issues, and implementation of best practices to improve performance.
In specialised production environments such as CAD and BIM, an assessment process is required to identify key statistics. Ultimately, the objectives of innovation, competitive advantage, and achieving excellence are derived from setting benchmarks for the project management process, and
enabling the Human Resources team to achieve them. Skills assessments provide the necessary framework to enable business goals to be achieved through data analysis, as opposed to being based on intuition or assumptions. It needs to be emphasised though, that the process will only be effective when the staff being assessed are comfortable to take the assessments without fear of retribution. One of the methods we use at A2K Technologies to counter this is for a subject matter expert to explain the
targeted mentoring and growth path to participants during the initial steps before the assessment. Well-structured analytical skills, combined with experience and knowledge, achieve results. The key to this is recognising that one person will not be enough to successfully implement an effective knowledge management system, and there are significant benefits to gaining external perspectives. The benefits of the process are summarised in the table below.

Solving Design Data Management Issues The increase in design capability from 3D modelling brought with it an increase in the amount of 3D and 2D design and project data - in addition to office documents, emails, PDFs and image files. This white paper highlights how this design data was managed in the past, how the leaders are managing their data now, and best practice product data management. We also explore how organisations - from the single designer to the workgroup, and then to the entire organisation - can use and benefit from product data management using Autodesk Vault. After over 30 years of CAD design, paper-based archives have all but disappeared from design and engineering departments. Paper production drawings still go to the
shop floor and onsite, however every search through the archive and every change made is undertaken by accessing digital data. Because of this ever-increasing amount of data, it can no longer be efficiently or effectively controlled without a management system. As well as this growth in data, today’s marketplace in Australia and New Zealand is in a constant state of change, and presents common challenges to all designers: • We operate in a collaborative environment where dependency on partners around the world is becoming a key driver to future growth. • There is a need to reduce costs to compete with global competition, whilst reducing time to manufacture. • The need to work smarter rather

than harder. Value-added time needs to be maximised so an organisation can work to its strengths, and innovate designs to differentiate from the competition. • The need to be flexible and provide customised solutions is a key differentiator for local suppliers when competing against overseas businesses. Using the Autodesk Vault family of products allows designers to meet the above challenges and add value to their clients, thereby ensuring their own profitable growth.
The Importance of Data Management • Process Automation and Change Management.
Effective and efficient data management gives the following benefits to an organisation:
If you want to shorten product development cycles and produce higher quality manufactured goods, while avoiding the complications and expense traditionally associated with data management systems, now is the time to take a look at the Autodesk Vault family of products.
• Accessibility to Data and Maintaining a Single Source of Truth • Teamwork and Collaborative Design • Reduction in Non-Value Add Work • Enterprise Scalability and Office Integration

At A2K Technologies, we have seen cases where designers and purchasing officers have ordered incorrect custom-built components costing in excess of $12K, due to poor product data management. The cost to implement a product data management system would have been a fraction of the cost of the mistake.

Engineering Transformation Governance: Responding to Change In this white paper, we invite A2K Technologies’ Senior Solutions Consultant, JC Davis, to share his thoughts, experiences and observations gleaned from 25 plus years’ industry experience in design, engineering, management and thought leadership initiatives. Davis shares his insights and best practice guidelines to assist engineering firms in approaching change in a way that realises maximum adoption, business benefit, and initiative success.
This paper emphasises the need for a true governance system, by explaining the significance of relevant components within a risk and liability framework to position various levels of governance that impact upon the efficiencies of
project execution. It explores three types of governance to achieve this; Corporate Governance, Engineering (or Project) Governance, and Transformation Governance, with practical implications for success in their adoption.

entering the dimensions. Type ‘=’ first, then type the formula. This can also be applied when selecting objects and changing temporary dimension values. 03 TOP TECH TIP #03 Sometimes you want Center Line markers on dimensions, and sometimes you don’t. But when dimensioning Families, you don’t really have a choice if you need to select a reference that is considered to be a Center. To get around this, in the Family draw an ‘Invisible’ Detail Line where you want to pick up the non-Center Line dimension as a reference. Then when back in the project, use TAB to highlight and select the Detail Line rather than the Center Line.
When entering length dimensions for modelling walls, lines, moving objects, etc., type ‘10m’ rather than ‘10000’. Revit will translate to mm for you. This also works if you type ‘100cm’ or 32’80” (feet and inches). Also, you can type a formula when 24 | DESIGN PLATFORM
04 TOP TECH TIP #04 Most new Revit users will make a unique Tag for Doors, Windows, Floors, etc, that will all tag a single parameter, such as Type Mark. This is fine if each of these Tags need to look the same graphically, i.e. Font, Size, Linework, etc. But what if all the Tags for the Type Mark all look the same? Instead, try creating a single MultiCategory Tag. This will greatly reduce the Tag family quantities in your content library. By doing this, your content library can contain a separate Multi-Category Tag for commonly tagged parameters such as: • Description • Manufacturer • Mark • Model • Type Mark

Here’s how to use Revit.ini for structural slab display - add the below syntax to the .ini file to control hidden slab edges.
When creating Families, Type Catalogs provide a means to define Types without the need to enter the Type data directly into the Family.
HiddenSlabEdge = all
But, this now creates a disconnect between the Family (.RFA), and the Type Catalog (.TXT) files. If a user is editing the Family file, they may not be immediately aware that there is an accompanying Type Catalog file.
Below from the help menu HiddenSlabEdge determines how hidden lines of slab edges display in plan views of the ‘structural’ discipline.
Type = string Valid values: All = show all hidden lines for slab edges Itself = show the bearing or hidden edges (default) Other = show the edge intersecting the slab None = show no hidden lines for slab edges)
To help address this, in the Family file define a single Type and label it something like ‘Refer to Type Catalog’. This way the user stands a chance of being aware that the Type data is defined elsewhere! 09 TOP TECH TIP #09
In Revit sheets, the guide grid tool can be used to accurately line up views on multiple sheets. This prevents plans jumping around the page when viewing a presentation. 10 TOP TECH TIP #10
In Revit you can nudge elements in any direction by selecting them and using the arrows on your keyboard. If you hold down shift while hitting the arrow key, the selected element will move by a larger increment. 06 TOP TECH TIP #06
You can quickly expand or minimise all levels of the project browser by selecting the top level element and pressing the Asterisk or Minus key respectively. 07 TOP TECH TIP #07
If you need to share a model outside your office but don’t want to include all views/sheets etc, you can create a view or sheet schedule, and then easily delete what you don’t want by highlighting those rows and selecting ‘delete’ from the ribbon.
BONUS TIP
If you want to equally space items such as columns, you can dimension them with the Aligned dimension type. Once the dimension is placed, click the EQ symbol on the dimension to equally space them.
Our Revit tips and tricks are brought to you by A2K Technologies’ Technical Consultants, and are created to help you make the most of your Autodesk software. Tips are regularly updated on our website, at http://www.a2ktechnologies.com.au/support/tech-tips-tricks
