Los Medanos College Pre-Design, Programming, Schematic Design | Academic | Brentwood, CA | 2016

Los Medanos College part of the Contra Costa Community College District in Pittsburgh, CA. This project is for a new 40,000sf satellite center in Brentwood, CA. The center seeks to support and build upon the sense of community and comraderie that exists at the existing campus, giving commuter students a place to study and socialize when not in class. Architecturally the project seeks to strike a connection to Brentwood’s thriving agricultural community and rich history while reflecting the values and ambitions of the college. The site is adjacent to a public park and features views of Mt. Diablo as well as an onsite water detention basin. This project is currently in schematic design.

Floating Oculus Concept Design | Hospitality | Weifeng, China | 2014

The Floating Oculus project was a series of studies for a full season resort on the Changchingling Reservoir near Rizhao, China. The objective was to design a self-sustaining stationary 50 sq m. dwelling that could be constructed for around $100k. The design process was focused around constructability, the dwelling experience and establishing a strong connection with the landscape. The oculus featured above was one of four presented. All proposals can be constructed out of aggregated standard shipping containers and can be assembled entirely on site.

Prior to designing the Oculus we conducted user studies to determine the types of users in the region and their expectations in an ideal vacation experience. Balancing the results of these studies with client goals we determined the Oculus must prioritize constructability, the natural experience and sustainability above all else.

Project Goals 1. Constructability

2. Natural Experience

Executive Suite Rizhao, China | 2015

This design is for a boutique hotel for a leading manufacturer of commercial trucks and agricultural equipment in Rizhao, China. The hotel is located at the company’s global headquarters and will accomodate visiting dignitaries and high level executives who require space to rest and work throughout their stay. Each executive suite houses a small office, a living room and a bedroom while the transitional spaces offer unique moments that reflect the company’s agricultural history and technological strength.

Pre-design studies

The experience of the executive suite is centered around three components: business, bathing and repose. Privacy is balanced with fluidity as each space flows into the next without allowing a simultaneous reveal. The company’s brand is expressed through a sense of balance and precision in how the space functions along with various custom fabricated elements within the room.

As part of the pre-design process we developed experience cards to visualize the key moments of a guest’s daily routine. Each card was given a title that defines the sensation or experience of that moment and provides a narrative on which we could base our decisions throughout the design process.

Executive Suite

A central steel cladded bathroom provides a natural division between office and residence while highlighting the company’s manufacturing capabilities. The object, while one of a kind, was forged and painted on the company’s factory floor using materials and technologies found in their trademark automotive products.

Bathroom interior

The client expressed a desire for a bathing experience inspired by transcendental states found within nature. Using the bamboo forest as a reference, a pivoting frosted glass screen was designed to separate the bathing and vanity spaces. The seamless tile, extended ceiling and screen work to cultivate an experience that is both boundless and unique.

Corridor Design

The calming experience of the forest canopy was the inspiration behind the corridor environment. Light and shadow bring the user’s awareness to their movements and encourages reflection and pause between workday activities.

Pillow Bacchanal Academic | Finalist - Wallenberg Design Competition | 2013

Pillow Bacchanal is a series of super-scale outdoor furniture objects that invite lounging, imaginative play, and the pursuit of wanton pleasures. Beggining with a rigorous investigation of the material properties of stuffed fabric membranes, the project poses questions about the role structure and the nature of pliable bodies: What are the architectural possibilities of pliable materials that are something less than perfectly structural? When a material system tends to slump instead of span, is there an architectural future for that system? In response to these queries, Pillow Bacchanal proposes a future where the slump of pliable materials is valuable for its posture, its carriage, and the precise ways in which it can suggestively initiate interactions with an audience.

Inspiration

s

No Sympathy for the Devil by Auguste Leveque

Bacchanalia by Peter Paul Ruben

Pillow Bacchanal sets out to accommodate inate human pleasures, namely: bathing, lounging, and resting. The posture and character borrowed inspiration from the aggregated human forms depicted in roman bacchanal paintings. Meanwhile, the objects’ structure and mechanics were derived from the inner structures and states of slump found in echinoderms. Baroque furniture was also influential in its surface treatments and attitude towards the human form in states of relief.

In this corporate hotel, movement under projected shadows create a reference to the forest canopy. An innovated lighting system comprised of stacked wood panels and concealed uplighting allows the glow of the wood screens to enhance the transition from work to rest while also providing a memorable experience that instils Wuzheng’s role as a leader in agricultural innovation.
