Box and the Problematic Categorization From Freudian psychology’s affiliation with steam engine to Le Corbusier’s pivotal line “House is a machine for living in”; from intensive specialization to increasingly contentious linear economy, much of the constituents of the modern society are still experiencing a lingering aftertaste of machine fetishism (or veneration) stem from the late nineteenth century, in which each agent/entity is concatenated in a linear order, and has its dedicated function, to achieve maximum efficiency. What vested beneath this established system is the categorization process core to cognitive psychology. We repeatedly generalize, categorize, separate, and reorganize every piece of received information. Indeed, we were immersed in this process since as infants to develop a sense of structure to a chaotic universe, under which boundary demarcated is indelible, inertia created is irreversible. Isn’t it why golden raspberries are priced much higher than red ones despite the same nutrition value? Yet categorization’s epistemic function is not to organize chaos into order, but to pursue the meaning of designated objects. If we consider categories as conceptual boxes, perceived information as objects that yet to be sorted to respective box, and categorization process as the sorting procedure, we come across to realize the finished process involves three underlying assumptions, each represents a disciplinary issue in distinct scales: I. The Box - Rigidity - Human Perception What draws attention is the box’s apperance, instead of objects within. It associates with construction of stereotype.

# 1 - HALL

II. Objects - Immutability - Architecture It’s assuming that objects’ attributes will remain the same permanently. In fact, characteristics that shapes a type of program or function appears to be extremely volatile and dynamic, which constantly mutates as to reflect status quo. In the 19th Centuries, factories in some European countries once hark back to register the facade and spatial quality of religious buildings to detach itself from the general notion of factory. Theatre’s typological transformation during mid 19th century can be seen as the epitome of democratization as it functioned as a rendezvous for mutual exhibitionism and jostling for social elites’ positions rather than venues offer performance. III. The Box - Isolation - Urban / Social The third conundrum refers to the interdependence of domain of speciality. Although acting in isolation is necessary for accumulating disciplinary knowledge, each discipline is of limited value in responding to the diversity of urban issues. This thesis is an inquiry into the validity of the categorization process and the way we demarcate the perimeter of architecture typology as well as the boundary of the discipline. By experimenting formal, functional and programmatic hybridization of two desperate programs: concert hall and waste management facility. The effort of seeking for the definition of architecture has never ceased. But what if architecture, like the page of Error Code 404, is undefinable in nature? If so, such quest becomes utterly preposterous. Everything, and Nothing is Architecture.

POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS

Developed during third year undergraduate studio, this project initially aimed to study the economy of skyscraper in relation to exploited mechanical void zoning resolution loophole in New York City. On May 29, 2019, the New York City Council adopted the Residential Tower Mechanical Voids Text Amendment. The original scheme was then modified subsequently to address the concern over amendment’s efficacy as well as its potential city-wise side effect. Limit the height of mechanical space will stop preposterous architectural form from emerging, but will never curb avaricious real estate developer from seeking niche to maximize profit. This project proposes an alternative amendment that works with the capital, instead of fights against it.

AVG. BUILDING HEIGHT OF NEIGHBOURHOOD

As the amendment made years after few supertall towers built. These precedents outlined the market value of luxury housing at first place. The cost of constructing a supertall tower as intend to yield an equal amount of revenue will be significantly higher. As a result, developer will likely to acquire land elsewhere, for instance, neighborhood with lowrises, to maximize profit margin.

The proposed amendment allows developers to continue to have high ceiling space as tower height booster that’s exempted from counting toward FAR partially or completely (4) in relation to its location. But developers are required to relinquish their ownership over specified spaces. Such spaces will need to be subsidized or sold separately at a capped value to house programs that instigate social mobility.

A matrix of planar and sectional profiles are used throughout the initial massing study. Geometry of planar profiles are intended to integrate lateral structure to facade to reduce core size.

MEANS OF RAISING HEIGHT AFTER ZONING AMENDMENT

[1] Tower with typical 9 ft ceiling height. Cost per floor decreases as more stories built. [2] Ceiling height raised to 13-15 ft. market price increases in proportion to height. [3] Building height is boosted by introducing mechanical voids in between floors, which does not count toward FAR. Cost per floor passes inflection point and increases exponentially with material, structure, engineering cost become more expensive. While on the other hand, market price skyrockets at a steeper rate. [4] Excessive mechanical void (usually more than 150ft) is positioned at mid-lower waist to inflate building height and curb construction cost simultaneously. [5] Lower retail volume is exploited to increase tower height as well. AMENDMENT [A] Mechanical voids taller than 25ft and voids spaces located within 75 ft of each other will count as zoning floor area. 20

In most cases, traffic congestions are caused by temporary traffic flow disruption. It’s magnified when high volume meets a narrow time span. Facilities contain massive crowd share the same post event traffic congestion syndrome - a micro rush hour stem from the sudden rupture of on going event. Although post-game experience around sports arena has been brought up to attention, studies indicate it is nearly a pseudo proposition: nearly 95% of spectators choose to leave arena immediately after the game ends. To address this issue, a structure complex houses programs must capable of nurturing serendipity to target specific crowd and motivates them to stay by attracting, directing, and eventually reconstructing their ideal path subconsciously. This project, therefore, focuses on solving macro conundrum through micro operator through implementing a myriad of pre-existing programs along with seeds of adventitious events as filtration system to preside over extended experience beyond the standard match window to ameliorate volume-induced traffic congestion near Dodger Stadium.

ON HEDONISM Palm Springs built up its reputation as an exclusive resort for Hollywoods’ celebrities in the 1920s. Since then, the city elite became consumed with maintaining its reputation. Relying on the massive amount of underground water stored in the aquifer under the Coachella Valley, the city was able to flourish even it’s settled in a seemly uninhabitable environment. Yet what came along with this is the misconception of unlimited water resource — pools in the backyards became the norm; golf became the spirit sports; the manmade oasis in desert. This fallacy not only puts morally questionable, pleasure-principle driven wastefulness into a politically correct position, but generates an illusion of detachment to the natural environment, transforming the city of Palm Spring to a surrealistic destination. This project, instead of being protrayed as a carbon neutral or so called green sustainable building, operates as a critique on hedonistic life style by implementing a series of ironic gestures hidden among a series of interlocking mini golf courses. The uses of excessive curvatures echo hedonism in a caricature way, tend to draw people’s attention to absurd wastefulness. For instance, the piece of window hanging from this pink structure, concaving towards street, implying this surrealistic house detaches from the context.

SELF ADOPTING PANEL PERSONAL WORK, 2017 In architecture practice today, performance is one of the most important factors in the design and delivery of a project. The creation and use of parametrics to create intelligent digital models that integrate and respond to specific sets of performance criteria, offers a more holistic approach to design and its relationship to built form. It allows architects to anticipate and accommodate issues of collaboration, fabrication and installation in earlier phases of design.

A-LINE-D COMPETITION ENTRY: ARQUINE MEXTROPOLI PAVILION 2019

B

Collaboration: Audrey Haliman Year: 2019 Area: 170 Sqm Budget: $5,000

Textiles are brought back to take on its “natural” position throughout the proposed structure. Upon encounter, it may be (to some) a nostalgic image. The image of daily household laundry before the washer and dryer. Major cities around the world are known to heavily discourage households from displaying any drying of linens or clothing on apartment and home balconies as an attempt to preserve the city’s facade. This task is now mostly forced indoors. By utilizing a simple material that is string, the process of line drying has been overlooked as a way to reduce energy consumption. Although it’s connotations might include domesticity, the string throughout the pavilion is key structural element: literally tying together the wooden frame upright. The idea that the same materials that are considered an aesthetic disturbance within cities around the world are now hovering above the park grounds. They move as the wind does, light as ever; always seen floating mid-air. Venturing deep into the layers may one find a “diorama’’ of what textile waste produces. Textiles take a large surface area of landfills. Heavy duty tarp acts to preserve a large pile of donated clothing and other miscellaneous fabrics yet to be processed and cleaned. It is vacuum sealed; hard as a rock. As if a petrified piece of the landfills are introduced within the structure; it is frozen in its state as an artificial landscape. One of the major sources of textile being utilized is recyclable linens through the hotel industry. They act as a white backdrop for the droplets of variance that are donated clothing. It encloses a center for donation. Although the act of drying is not executed within the pavilion, we hope that through this type of architecture may we re-spark old and new images of the process that is line-drying, and how looking towards history is not necessarily a terrible thing to do.

BRANCHING OUT: A TREE COMPETITION: 2018 TAICHUNG YUXIAN TREE HOUSE COMPETITION (1ST PRIZE) Collaboration: Audrey Haliman Program: Artist Studios - Work + Exhibition Area: 26 sq meter per Treehouse Budget: 100,000 TWD (30,000 USD) Current Status: Design Development Est. Date of Construction: Fall 2020

If a tree house utilizes a tree such that we perceive it merely as a column: a supportive structure that elevates floor plates off the ground, the tree is thus merely a tool to produce an image of our “integration” with nature.

Working

What if a single column – a structure made from man, for man – is placed amidst nature. Would we read the forest for its trees? Both tree houses confine to a single structure: a suspended bridge hovering over a surface. A volume (a stair) and a line (a wide flange) prop up the bridge in both cases. Together they act as the primary support for the floor and roof, suspended by a set of columns. Mesh walls fill the gaps between these columns, defining a loose set of spaces that allow light and air to permeate throughout the space, but traps shadows and distinct shapes from it’s surroundings.

Exhibit

Whilst the artist may work privately on elevated grounds, spectators are directed as the artist pleases: the bridge may or may not be the only platform to view or interact with the works exhibited. Both spectator and artist may monitor their surroundings as they look upon a mirrored ceiling. Colors and shapes blend upon refraction onto the water-esque roof scape. To protect itself from rain, coated ETFE (Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene) drop down along the perimeter. The corrugation of floor and roofruns in two directions, cancelling out structural deflection. The interstitial space between the corrugation and flooring panel conceals any wiring or hardware to be installed. It allows for a floor without obstacles, free to be utilized.A wooden frame is hidden in between the corrugated steel roof and the mirror-finish aluminum sheet, acting as lateral structural component. This minimizes the weight of the roof whilst being supported by the columns that run into the floor.

Public

46

Although trees do not intersect the space in physical form, it’s many traits are projected outward or onto the space; revealing the different attempts to intertwine with nature.
