Experience Group Phi, Pune, India Feb, 2013-May, 2013 Project Architect § Group Phi is a mid-sized architectural firm in Pune and I got a glimpse of local work experience here. § I worked on the schematic design until the construction drawing stage of a residential building for Tarang Engineers and developers in Pune. § Also, I worked on the civil modification details for the PRAJ office tower in Pune and worked with the Project Management Consultant to create the base schedule for project execution. RJB-CPL, Mumbai, India Mar, 2012-Dec, 2012 Architect § I and my team won IIT Bombay’s competition to design a common building for CESE (Center for Environmental Science and Engineering) and DESE (Department of Energy Science and Engineering). § I worked on the concept upto the preliminary design stage of the project. § I was a part of the team on IITME (India International Textile Machinery Exhibition) Society’s Exhibition center project in GIFT (Gujarat International Financial Tec City), near Ahmedabad. § I acted as a bridge between the Architect and the Project Management Consultant for this project. Site is strategically located between the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.

GOAL To make transport more convenient in this busy transport hub. Introduce designed public spaces to the environment. PLANNING Terminal and station planned close together for convenience and efficiency. Based on study of traffic conditions The flyover is used to enhance connectivity of the site. Public plaza is located below the fly-over and becomes the spine of the project. Corporate tower is separated from the terminus by the public plaza. This serves as a good transition between the corporate zone and terminus traffic. CIRCULATION Traffic zoning is used to segregate traffic. Pedestrian circulation in each of the areas was designed to create efficient public spaces. Desire line charts were used to evaluate and design traffic routing.

Bus terminal: Inter-city and intra-city bus terminals are separated by public concourse on intermediate level. Fly-over, ramps, at-grade roads serve the terminals Intra-city terminus has lesser traffic, hence it is on the top floor. Corporate Tower: Modular design: Module of 4 office floors + terrace is repeated. Terraces rotated along central axis to provide views of the city. Central service and structural core, open plan work space. Public plaza: Shopping+art gallery+amphitheater+bazaar (pedestrian plaza, hawker zone) Contemporary architectural style + vernacular spaces Hawkers from neighboring areas will be rehabilitated in this planned bazaar area. Structures All structures in the campus are designed to create columnfree spaces to allow free pedestrian movement. Space frames, trusses, structural cores and post tensioned cables are used.

Design As per volumetric needs of function and circulation. Breaks monotony in spaces. Maximizing sea-front use of site, designed along site’s edge.

Context The terminal building is inspired from the rocky landscape of the coast. The project will represent the contemporary style with a backdrop of Victorian architecture.

Envelope Follows functional needs of spaces, creating dynamic volumes. Copper skin reacts well with humid climate in Mumbai,ages well and low maintenance. Consecutive steel portal frames create the skeleton. Column-less concourse to make it an efficient public space.

PROCESS The team worked to produce the conceptual design, put forth construction solutions, costs and schedule for the project. Also, the risk distribution was studied well. The analysis was done to suit the Design Build project delivery method. Study served to forecast the design and construction of the building.

CONTEXT Texas A&M University has a strong architectural context. Also, the accelerated design build construction delivery method will reduce the disruption to the university routine. Master planning of the building was done as per Texas A&M Campus guidelines. Also, USGBC’s LEED gold accreditation was followed for the building design.

CONTEXT: Area selected lies between two prominent areas of Pune- the cantonment and city’s Peth area. The area is called the Babajaan area and is approximately 4 sq.km. This area has always been populated by a confluence of communities and cultures creating a very unique architectural and cultural blend worth an analysis. SITE: Streets selected are between Bhopale Chowk, Babajaan Dargah and Shivaji market. This area is vibrant with diverse cultures, religions, age-groups and businesses that thrive together.

GOAL: To understand interaction between spaces and the people. This will include study of proportions, anthropometry, ergonomics, architectural styles, cultures, materials and transformation of spaces into cultural hubs. This analysis will be an instrument in designing organic public places.

Styles of architecture Architectural icons, colors & motifs are used by communities to demarcate spaces that belong to them.

Vernacular public places Chaiwala(tea stall) at the chowk (crossroads), street corners, steps of buildings, rickshaws act as vernacular public spaces. Zoning: The area was divided into different zones for our study. This analysis was used to understand interaction between the different zones. The different zones were cross sections of the area, that assisted study of the communities and various styles of architecture that thrive in this tiny area of the city.

Shivaji Market is one of the busiest markets in Pune. It is a heritage building. The market serves as a lifeline to this area.

Conceptualized based on stacking principle. 3 office floors share a landscaped green open terrace and a common enclosed space. This 3 floored stack plan was repeated and mirrored with every stack to balance the building and provide maximum interaction between employees. Terrace

Maximum foreground was provided to create a pedestrian Office building: Stacking module friendly zone. Shopping, auditoriums, training center and service apartments are connected via pedestrian pathways. Site is unified using landscape elements. The program was designed to provide a sufficient space bubble to every user.

THE PROJECT Corporate campus designed for the IT(Information Technology) sector of Zensar Technologies. The three phases of work were planned and executed as necessary. This is a green field project. Design work was successively awarded to Somaya & Kalappa consultants for all three phases of construction.

PROGRAM The design program for phase 3 of Zensar Campus included work spaces, offices, conference rooms, auditoriums, library, parking and ancillary spaces. Two buildings, namely Fuji and Rockies, were designed by my team to serve the functions.

MY EXPERIENCE The team provided me with opportunities to work within the team as well as independently. I was involved in detailed design, concepts and ideas for further development. This enhanced my understanding of corporate architecture and allowed me to become a good team-player. Also, site visits and on-site coordination were very crucial in strengthening my concepts of construction.

I worked on the detailed design of the Rockies and Fuji buildings. All phases of this corporate campus design use a contemporary architectural language that ties the campus together. Spaces and buildings are made very interactive and user-friendly. Pune being an IT hub also contributes to the corporate design language. This project is a world-class facility to facilitate collaboration and a very positive work environment.

Analysis of constructability of a project was done based upon labor, material and equipment. These elements define the cost and duration of the project. The productivity, safety and quality of the project was then determined.


projects with Arup Presidio Parkway/Doyle Drive Replacement Project, San Francisco, CA, USA - I helped to develop the Project Management Sponsor's staffing plan for the P3 (Public Private partnership) phase of the project. - With my background in Construction management, I had knowledge regarding the working of P3 projects. - Planning the resources needed on the project involved understanding the project's work-flow schedule and interaction between the various stakeholders. - Also, I helped the transaction advice team of Arup in negotiations involved in this challenging P3 project. - This was the first P3 project in California. Presidio Parkway Project, California

Go Toronto electrification study, Canada - The Go Toronto electrification project was initiated by Metrolinx, Canada. They intended electrification of the entire corridor of Go public railway in Toronto. - This project had a lot of political mileage since it affected the main areas and a large population of Toronto. - Arup was working with other consultants to design the electrification of the corridor. - However, the decision makers needed to know the constructability and feasibility of the project. - I worked with the internal and external teams (JV was with Delcan and LTK) to provide the decision makers with a concise analysis of infrastructure capital costs, O&M costs, risk analysis and a schedule for the project. Go Toronto (Metrolinx), Canada

California High Speed Rail (CaHSR) Project, CA, USA - The CaHSR's segment from Fresno to Bakersfield was being designed by Arup. - The design was in its nascent stages when we were involved on the project. There were several alternatives that needed to be analyzed for feasibility. -These design alternatives were carefully studied by our team. Quantities, costs and time-lines were calculated and risks were analyzed to provide a comparative study of the options. - This helped the stakeholders and designers to select the most feasible option in a short span of time.

High Speed Rail, California


Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL), Lead, SD, USA - This is a National Science Foundation project which has scientific and research facilities at the surface and subsurface levels within the old Homestake Gold Mine. - I played a key role in developing the 90% PDR cost estimate for DUSEL. The cost estimate is a Level 2 detailed estimate, developed in the Heavy Bid software. - I mainly worked on the structural/architectural part of the estimate. - Also, we used the Monte Carlo risk simulation software to analyze risks related to construction of the project. - This was a very unique project to analyze. City of Bellevue- East Link light rail B7/C9T to NE 2nd Portal Alternative - The city of Bellevue was planning to link the city with Seattle via light rail. - They were evaluating alternatives for the East link Rail project. The evaluation was based on ridership, environmental analysis, costs and time constraints. - The design alternative that would provide the best solution to these constraints would be chosen. - I developed cost estimates and memorandums based on the conceptual design. - Arup segment costs were compared to the previous segment cost estimate prepared by Sound Transit. -This comparison helped the decision makers to conclusively choose the preferred design option. Tappan Zee Bridge, New York, U.S.A - Tappan Zee bridge in New York was in the design stage. - The bridge design comprised of traffic lanes, light rail transit and bus rapid transit. - Arup’s designers had created alternatives for the owners to select. - We analyzed each alternative w.r.t structure, efficiency, cost, time to construct, risks and cost-benefit ratio. - There were a lot of constraints to the project and it was a very important project for New York State. - Our analysis helped the authorities and designers to come to logical conclusions and achieve breakthroughs in the project. SFCTA Bi-County Project 11_Bayshore Intermodal LARGE Station - MTCo Estimate - I worked to develop capital cost estimate for Bayshore station. It is on the border of San Francisco and San Mateo counties. - The infrastructure costs for the rail project included caltrain platform, bus transit center, light rail track, curbs, BRT station, bike elevated route, vertical circulation and bridge. - The design was in a very preliminary stage and the stake-holders needed rough order magnitude costs for the same. - Alternatives were compared based on infrastructure to be provided. - The costs and conceptual designs were used by the two counties to decide the needed infrastructure. Fermi National Accelarator Laboratory (FNAL), SD, USA - I was a part of the team to calculate the concept design estimates for a cryostat associated with the cryogenic system at DUSEL in Lead, SD. - The estimates were developed for the different design options and underground levels being considered. The various permutations and combinations of the cost options were analyzed to select the design. - Being a Science project, the calculations needed to be perfect for the needed scientific infrastructure. - The specifications needed to be adhered to strictly and it was one of a kind project.

Fort Lauderdale Airport, FL, USA - Fort Lauderdale airport's baggage handling facility was to be replaced by new more efficient equipment. - I helped the client understand the supporting infrastructure cost. This was a preliminary level design cost estimate. - There was a lot of civil rework and infrastructure cost involved in upgrade of the baggage handling facility.

Anaheim Convention Center, CA, USA - We were involved in the preliminary level construction analysis of this Convention Center located in Anaheim. - The project included removal, replacement and construction of building elements of the convention center. - Quantities and costs were developed to help the client in the budget-building process. - We helped the client to visualize the entire process and constraints to be considered.

Big Box Retailer (confidential) PV integration study, USA - I assisted the design team and worked elbow to elbow with them in the cost estimating and value engineering process. - The design team was considering modular energy saving options for site development of this big-box retailer. - Driving toward zero carbon foot-print, the client was given costs for the various options considered. - The costs and process was customized to suit the retailer’s requirements.

OTAY MESA Land Port of Entry, U.S.A - The project is located in San Diego, CA and is the thirdbusiest commercial port of entry on the Mexico-United States border. - We provided the client with the schedule for the reconstruction of the port of entry for larger traffic and surveillance requirements. - Also we suggested the suitable project delivery methods to enhance the pace of construction and operations understanding the functioning of the port of entry.

IIT Bombay buildings Location: IITB Campus, Mumbai Won a competition organized by IITB in 2012 to design a common building for the Department of Energy Science & Engineering (DESE) and Center for Environmental Science & Engineering (CESE). This would be an interconnected building to house the staff, research and teaching facility of the two departments. Along with this, we won the contract to design the National Center for Mathematics in the IITB campus. The team: Me, Ar. Mansi Sahu and Ar. Om Merchant. We worked together to develop a unique solar passive design for the institute’s requirement.

IIT Bombay buildings The building was designed for maximum working and environmental efficiency. GRIHA norms were adopted. Following design strategies were used: 1) Optimum Orientation 2) Internal Space arrangement (thermal buffer zone) 3) Allocation of building openings 4) Sizing of openings (limitation of window - wall - ratio and skylight - roof - ratio ) 5) Appropriate shading design 6) Adequate day lighting 7) Demand reduction strategies 8) HVAC system optimization 9) Building envelope designed to suit environmental conditions 10) Light shelves, louvers, green wall, solar panels, rain water harvesting is used in the design. 11) Horizontal and vertical zoning was done to accumulate the institute’s requirements. This allowed to create a very efficient circulation pattern for the functioning of the institution.

India ITME Exhibition Center, GIFT India International Textile Machinery Exhibition (ITME) Exhibition Center in Gujarat International Finance- Tech (GIFT) City: Architect: RJB-CPL Project stages that I participated in: Concept design, schematic design, project planning and detailed design. GIFT is a city in making and is planned to be the finance and technology hub of Gujarat. It is located between the cities of Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad. IITME organizes global exhibitions every 4 years to display modern technology, innovations and new market opportunities relating to textile machinery at one place. The IITME Society Exhibition Center is to be located in Gujarat International Financial�Tec (GIFT) City. The project will serve as an exclusive exhibition and convention facility in GIFT. This is a green-field project and the area of the site is 72.69 acres.

PRAJ Office tower, Pune Client: PRAJ - The building is a 6 storied office building with approximately 16,000 sq.m of office space. -The building was bought out by PRAJ and had tasked Group Phi to redo some of the civil work and design the interiors to suit PRAJ industries. - The building will be used by PRAJ employees as their office. - I was involved with the team from the schematic design to construction drawings stage. - This was a fast-paced project and was to be completed in 7 months. - I worked with the Project Management Consultant to create the base schedule for the execution of the project.
