A Contemporary Covering for Jumièges Abbey | Fall 2012 Group Members|Anastasia Sekalias|Amy Lundell|Robert Prochaska|Wenxin Chen 10 Day Charette
The Jumièges Abbey ruin has been built and rebuilt over centuries, resulting in a layering of architectural styles from Romanesque to High Gothic. In creating a roof the goal was to respect the history and aesthetic value inherent in the ruins, while continuing the culture of stylistic layering. The resulting solution is a reinterpretation of the Gothic rib vault. Based on the existing columns and structure, a web of arching steel members was devised. Integrating with the existing structure and forming the x-shaped intersections characteristic of a traditional Gothic rib vault effectively points to the past while the modern materials and complex form add a contemporary layer to a historic precedent.

Bibliotheque du Quartier| Fall 2012 Partners|Anastasia Sekalias|Amy Lundell
A public library located in the 11eme arr. of Paris, is designed to fulfill both community gathering functions as well as typical library services. The goal is to provide a layout that allows the community portions and the library portions to operate either as separate or integrated spaces, depending on changes in needs or community events. A variety of facade screens varying in material and transparency correspond to differing interior functions and their privacy needs. Mezzanine levels suspended from the main structure provide a separation which allows patrons to enter more secluded, private study spaces, away from the business of the stacks. A steel frame structure allows for the openness necessitated by library, gallery, and multipurpose community spaces.

Pedestrian Bridge in Pantin| Spring 2013 Group Members|Anastasia Sekalias|Tim Kennedy |Robert Prochaska|Carlos Flores 10 Day Charette
This bilevel pedestrian bridge in Pantin is designed with user convenience in mind. Two different paths accommodate different needs of foot traffic versus bike traffic, and are wide enough to allow for seating on the bridge itself. The bridge design appears highly industrial, in keeping with the language of the buildings and site surrounding it. The roof system also serves a dual purpose, providing shelter in the daytime, and illuminating at night for safety and visibility. The bridge’s structure is provided by a series of cantilevers suspended off of a central, cross braced truss. Rectangular steel tubes were chosen as the main structural members in the trussed elements to reduce the bridge’s self-weight, but still provide enough material to effectively resist bending forces.

This collaborative project resulted from based on an assigned structural figures, in this case, franchissement, or how to structurally bridge a space. The project located in Mont Blanc Chaminoix, France spans 130 m, serving as dual purpose: a bridge between two peaks, and a rest spot for skiers. In response to these programs the building consists of two overlapping elements linked by a central truss. Because of the scale of the project, the truss was of utmost structural importance. The exposed structure serves to celebrate its importance and divide spaces on the building’s interior.

Public Box Spring 2013 Group Members|Anastasia Sekalias|Sixtine Pauchet|Emma Ruebeillon|Racine Sawadogo|Zoe Legrand|Laurane Fournier 5 Day Charette
The Public Box collaboration aims to reactivate unused public space in Versailles. A bookswap in quiet tree-lined Carre St. Louis encourages passing pedestrians enjoy a moment of calm away from the busier streets. Owners of used books in fact receive two stories: an obvious one in the author’s written words, and another in the marks and wear left behind by the previous owner. This indirect personal interaction between book lovers is encouraged to develop into direct interaction through architectural cues. A moveable shelving system and dimensions sensitive to the human scale celebrate the human element in book swapping.

Institute for Advanced Glass Study (IAGS) | Fall 2013 Located in a prominent lot of downtown Champaign, this program combines facilities for a glass research facility with a glass art and technology exhibition space. The form is responsive to the surrounding site and provides opportunities for growth in its role in the community. A scheme of three distinct volumes allows public and private programs to function independently. This senior capstone course aimed to develop a comprehensive architectural project including development of programmed spaces integrating structural and environmental systems, building envelope systems, lifesafety provisions, building assemblies and the principles of sustainability in addition to thoughtful design of programmed spaces.

Early studies of wind behavior on the site inspired reflection on the nature of wind, and how to visually represent invisible forces which shape the environment. The resulting product is a thick double skinned “ribbon” facade. Ribbons between the glazing undulate as a result of air temperature differences, and can be manipulated to expand, collapse and rotate. As the ribbons’ movement and position are affected by varying weather and temperature, users are provided with a visual interpretation of the environment’s unseeable elements.
